This paper describes a method to detect generic dynamic objects for automated driving. First, a LiDAR-based dynamic grid is generated online. Second, a deep learning-based detector is trained on the dynamic grid to infer the presence of dynamic objects of any type, which is a prerequisite for safe automated vehicles in arbitrary, edge-case scenarios. The Rotation-equivariant Detector (ReDet) - originally designed for oriented object detection on aerial images - was chosen due to its high detection performance. Experiments are conducted based on real sensor data and the benefits in comparison to classic dynamic cell clustering strategies are highlighted. The false positive object detection rate is strongly reduced by the proposed approach.

We present our approach to unsupervised domain adaptation for single-stage object detectors on top-view grid maps in automated driving scenarios. Our goal is to train a robust object detector on grid maps generated from custom sensor data and setups. We first introduce a single-stage object detector for grid maps based on RetinaNet. We then extend our model by image- and instance-level domain classifiers at different feature pyramid levels which are trained in an adversarial manner. This allows us to train robust object detectors for unlabeled domains. We evaluate our approach quantitatively o…

Grid maps are widely used in robotics to represent obstacles in the environment and differentiating dynamic objects from static infrastructure is essential for many practical applications. In this work, we present a methods that uses a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to infer whether grid cells are covering a moving object or not. Compared to tracking approaches, that use e.g. a particle filter to estimate grid cell velocities and then make a decision for individual grid cells based on this estimate, our approach uses the entire grid map as input image for a CNN that inspects a larger …

A detailed environment perception is a crucial component of automated vehicles. However, to deal with the amount of perceived information, we also require segmentation strategies. Based on a grid map environment representation, well-suited for sensor fusion, free-space estimation and machine learning, we detect and classify objects using deep convolutional neural networks. As input for our networks we use a multi-layer grid map efficiently encoding 3D range sensor information. The inference output consists of a list of rotated bounding boxes with associated semantic classes. We conduct extensi…

We propose an object detector for top-view grid maps which is additionally trained to generate an enriched version of its input. Our goal in the joint model is to improve generalization by regularizing towards structural knowledge in form of a map fused from multiple adjacent range sensor measurements. This training data can be generated in an automatic fashion, thus does not require manual annotations. We present an evidential framework to generate training data, investigate different model architectures and show that predicting enriched inputs as an additional task can improve object detecti…

In this paper, we consider the transformation of laser range measurements into a top-view grid map representation to approach the task of LiDAR-only semantic segmentation. Since the recent publication of the SemanticKITTI data set, researchers are now able to study semantic segmentation of urban LiDAR sequences based on a reasonable amount of data. While other approaches propose to directly learn on the 3D point clouds, we are exploiting a grid map framework to extract relevant information and represent them by using multi-layer grid maps. This representation allows us to use well-studied deep…

In this paper we introduce a novel way to predict semantic information from sparse, single-shot LiDAR measurements in the context of autonomous driving. In particular, we fuse learned features from complementary representations. The approach is aimed specifically at improving the semantic segmentation of top-view grid maps. Towards this goal the 3D LiDAR point cloud is projected onto two orthogonal 2D representations. For each representation a tailored deep learning architecture is developed to effectively extract semantic information which are fused by a superordinate deep neural network. The…
We tackle the problem of object detection and pose estimation in a shared space downtown environment. For perception multiple laser scanners with 360° coverage were fused in a dynamic occupancy grid map (DOGMa). A single-stage deep convolutional neural network is trained to provide object hypotheses comprising of shape, position, orientation and an existence score from a single input DOGMa. Furthermore, an algorithm for offline object extraction was developed to automatically label several hours of training data. The algorithm is based on a two-pass trajectory extraction, forward and backward …

We propose a deep convolutional object detector for automated driving applications that also estimates classification, pose and shape uncertainty of each detected object. The input consists of a multi-layer grid map which is well-suited for sensor fusion, free-space estimation and machine learning. Based on the estimated pose and shape uncertainty we approximate object hulls with bounded collision probability which we find helpful for subsequent trajectory planning tasks. We train our models based on the KITTI object detection data set. In a quantitative and qualitative evaluation some models …
This paper presents GridNet, a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture for semantic image segmentation (full scene labelling). Classical neural networks are implemented as one stream from the input to the output with subsampling operators applied in the stream in order to reduce the feature maps size and to increase the receptive field for the final prediction. However, for semantic image segmentation, where the task consists in providing a semantic class to each pixel of an image, feature maps reduction is harmful because it leads to a resolution loss in the output prediction. This paper represents an text extraction method from Google maps, GIS maps/images. Due to an unsupervised approach there is no requirement of any prior knowledge or training set about the textual and non-textual parts. Fuzzy CMeans clustering technique is used for image segmentation and Prewitt method is used to detect the edges. Connected component analysis and gridding technique enhance the correctness of the results. The proposed method reaches 98.5% accuracy level on the basis of experimental data sets.
We introduce G-CNN, an object detection technique based on CNNs which works without proposal algorithms. G-CNN starts with a multi-scale grid of fixed bounding boxes. We train a regressor to move and scale elements of the grid towards objects iteratively. G-CNN models the problem of object detection as finding a path from a fixed grid to boxes tightly surrounding the objects. G-CNN with around 180 boxes in a multi-scale grid performs comparably to Fast R-CNN which uses around 2K bounding boxes generated with a proposal technique. This strategy makes detection faster by removing the object prop…

One of the most important parts of environment perception is the detection of obstacles in the surrounding of the vehicle. To achieve that, several sensors like radars, LiDARs and cameras are installed in autonomous vehicles. The produced sensor data is fused to a general representation of the surrounding. In this thesis the dynamic occupancy grid map approach of Nuss et al. is used while three goals are achieved. First, the approach of Nuss et al. to distinguish between moving and non-moving obstacles is improved by using Fully Convolutional Neural Networks to create a class prediction for ea…
In this paper we present an approach to estimate Free Space from a Stereo image pair using stochastic occupancy grids. We do this in the domain of autonomous driving on the famous benchmark dataset KITTI. Later based on the generated occupancy grid we match 2 image sequences to compute the top view representation of the map. We do this to map the environment. We compute a transformation between the occupancy grids of two successive images and use it to compute the top view map. Two issues need to be addressed for mapping are discussed - computing a map and dealing with dynamic objects for comp…

Environment modeling utilizing sensor data fusion and object tracking is crucial for safe automated driving. In recent years, the classical occupancy grid map approach, which assumes a static environment, has been extended to dynamic occupancy grid maps, which maintain the possibility of a low-level data fusion while also estimating the position and velocity distribution of the dynamic local environment. This paper presents the further development of a previous approach. To the best of the author's knowledge, there is no publication about dynamic occupancy grid mapping with subsequent analysis…

In machine learning and computer vision, mean shift (MS) qualifies as one of the most popular mode-seeking algorithms used for clustering and image segmentation. It iteratively moves each data point to the weighted mean of its neighborhood data points. The computational cost required to find the neighbors of each data point is quadratic to the number of data points. Consequently, the vanilla MS appears to be very slow for large-scale datasets. To address this issue, we propose a mode-seeking algorithm called GridShift, with significant speedup and principally based on MS. To accelerate, GridSh…

Recently, there has been a growing interest in developing saliency methods that provide visual explanations of network predictions. Still, the usability of existing methods is limited to image classification models. To overcome this limitation, we extend the existing approaches to generate grid saliencies, which provide spatially coherent visual explanations for (pixel-level) dense prediction networks. As the proposed grid saliency allows to spatially disentangle the object and its context, we specifically explore its potential to produce context explanations for semantic segmentation networks…
Computer vision algorithms with pixel-wise labeling tasks, such as semantic segmentation and salient object detection, have gone through a significant accuracy increase with the incorporation of deep learning. Deep segmentation methods slightly modify and fine-tune pre-trained networks that have hundreds of millions of parameters. In this work, we question the need to have such memory demanding networks for the specific task of salient object segmentation. To this end, we propose a way to learn a memory-efficient network from scratch by training it only on salient object detection datasets. Ou…
The performance of 3D object detection models over point clouds highly depends on their capability of modeling local geometric patterns. Conventional point-based models exploit local patterns through a symmetric function (e.g. max pooling) or based on graphs, which easily leads to loss of fine-grained geometric structures. Regarding capturing spatial patterns, CNNs are powerful but it would be computationally costly to directly apply convolutions on point data after voxelizing the entire point clouds to a dense regular 3D grid. In this work, we aim to improve performance of point-based models …
This paper proposes a novel object detection framework named Grid R-CNN, which adopts a grid guided localization mechanism for accurate object detection. Different from the traditional regression based methods, the Grid R-CNN captures the spatial information explicitly and enjoys the position sensitive property of fully convolutional architecture. Instead of using only two independent points, we design a multi-point supervision formulation to encode more clues in order to reduce the impact of inaccurate prediction of specific points. To take the full advantage of the correlation of points in a…
Existing approaches to vision-language pre-training (VLP) heavily rely on an object detector based on bounding boxes (regions), where salient objects are first detected from images and then a Transformer-based model is used for cross-modal fusion. Despite their superior performance, these approaches are bounded by the capability of the object detector in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. Besides, the presence of object detection imposes unnecessary constraints on model designs and makes it difficult to support end-to-end training. In this paper, we revisit grid-based convolutional fe…

This paper presents novel hybrid architectures that combine grid- and point-based processing to improve the detection performance and orientation estimation of radar-based object detection networks. Purely grid-based detection models operate on a bird's-eye-view (BEV) projection of the input point cloud. These approaches suffer from a loss of detailed information through the discrete grid resolution. This applies in particular to radar object detection, where relatively coarse grid resolutions are commonly used to account for the sparsity of radar point clouds. In contrast, point-based models …

Previous works for LiDAR-based 3D object detection mainly focus on the single-frame paradigm. In this paper, we propose to detect 3D objects by exploiting temporal information in multiple frames, i.e., the point cloud videos. We empirically categorize the temporal information into short-term and long-term patterns. To encode the short-term data, we present a Grid Message Passing Network (GMPNet), which considers each grid (i.e., the grouped points) as a node and constructs a k-NN graph with the neighbor grids. To update features for a grid, GMPNet iteratively collects information from its neig…
High-energy physics detectors, images, and point clouds share many similarities in terms of object detection. However, while detecting an unknown number of objects in an image is well established in computer vision, even machine learning assisted object reconstruction algorithms in particle physics almost exclusively predict properties on an object-by-object basis. Traditional approaches from computer vision either impose implicit constraints on the object size or density and are not well suited for sparse detector data or rely on objects being dense and solid. The object condensation method p…

We present a method for recovering the dense 3D surface of the hand by regressing the vertex coordinates of a mesh model from a single depth map. To this end, we use a two-stage 2D fully convolutional network architecture. In the second stage, we design a differentiable operator to map features learned from the previous stage and regress a 3D coordinate map on the mesh grid. Finally, we sample from the mesh grid to recover the mesh vertices, and fit it an arti…

In this paper, we aim to forecast a future trajectory distribution of a moving agent in the real world, given the social scene images and historical trajectories. Yet, it is a challenging task because the ground-truth distribution is unknown and unobservable, while only one of its samples can be applied for supervising model learning, which is prone to bias. Most recent works focus on predicting diverse trajectories in order to cover all modes of the real distribution, but they may despise the precision and thus give too much credit to unrealistic predictions. To address the issue, we learn th…

Prediction of dynamic environment is crucial to safe navigation of an autonomous vehicle. Urban traffic scenes are particularly challenging to forecast due to complex interactions between various dynamic agents, such as vehicles and vulnerable road users. Previous approaches have used egocentric occupancy grid maps to represent and predict dynamic environments. A dynamic occupancy grid map (DOGMa) allows a fast, robust, and complete environment representation for automated vehicles. Dynamic objects in a DOGMa, however, are commonly represented as independent cells while modeled objects with shape and pose are favorable. In this regard, we propose a new pose estimation system based on a projective grid instead of object vertices. Recently, remarkable progress has been made in weakly supervised object localization (WSOL) to promote object localization maps. The common practice of evaluating these maps applies an indirect and coarse way, i.e., obtaining tight bounding boxes which can cover high-activation regions and calculating intersection-over-union (IoU) scores between the predicted and ground-truth boxes. This measurement can evaluate the ability of localization maps to some extent, but we argue that the maps should be measured directly and delicately, i.e., comparing the maps with the ground-truth object masks pixe…
