(Abridged) Mechanisms for quenching star formation in galaxies remain hotly debated, with galaxy mergers an oft-proposed pathway. In Ellison et al. (2022) we tested this scenario by quantifying the fraction of recently and rapidly quenched post-starbursts (PSBs) in a sample of post-merger galaxies identified in the Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS). With our recent development of the Multi-Model Merger Identifier (MUMMI) neural network ensemble (Ferreira et al. 2024a,b), we are now additionally able to predict the time since coalescence (T_PM) for the UNIONS post-merger galaxies up to T_PM = 1.8 Gyr, allowing us to further dissect the merger sequence and measure more precisely when quenching occurs. Based on a sample of 5927 z<0.3 post-mergers identified in UNIONS, we find that the post-coalescence population evolves from one dominated by star-forming (and starbursting) galaxies at 0 < T_PM < 0.16 Gyr, through to a population that is dominated by quenched galaxies by T_PM ~ 1.5 Gyr. We find a PSB excess throughout the post-merger regime, but with a clear peak at 0.16 < T_PM < 0.48 Gyr. In this post-merger time range PSBs are more common than in control galaxies by factors of 30-100, an excess that drops sharply at longer times since merger. We also quantify the fraction of PSBs that are mergers and find that the majority (75%) of classically selected E+A are identified as mergers, with a lower merger fraction (60%) amongst PCA selected PSBs. Our results demonstrate that 1) galaxy-galaxy interactions can lead to rapid post-merger quenching within 0.5 Gyr of coalescence, 2) the majority of (but not all) PSBs at low z are linked to mergers and 3) quenching pathways are diverse, with different PSB selection techniques likely identifying galaxies quenched by different physical processes with an additional dependence on stellar mass.
Galaxy mergers are traditionally one of the favoured mechanisms for quenching star formation. To test this paradigm in the context of modern cosmological simulations, we use the IllustrisTNG simulation to investigate the impact of individual merger events on quenching (i.e. star formation rate at least 3sig below the star-forming main sequence) within 500Myr after the coalescence phase. The rate of quenching amongst recently merged galaxies is compared with a control sample that is matched in redshift, stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), black hole mass and environment. We find quenching to…
We propose a new methodology aimed at finding star-forming galaxies in the phase which immediately follows the star-formation (SF) quenching, based on the use of high- to low-ionization emission line ratios. These ratios rapidly disappear after the SF halt, due to the softening of the UV ionizing radiation. We focus on [O III] $λ$5007/H$α$ and [Ne III] $λ$3869/[O II] $λ$3727, studying them with simulations obtained with the CLOUDY photoionization code. If a sharp quenching is assumed, we find that the two ratios are very sensitive tracers as they drop by a factor $\sim$ 10 within $\sim$ 10 Myr…
We investigate the timescale with which the IR luminosity decreases after a complete and rapid quenching of star formation using observations of local and high-redshift galaxies. From SED modelling, we derive the time since quenching of a subsample of 14 galaxies from the Herschel Reference Survey suffering from ram-pressure stripping due to the environment of the Virgo cluster and of a subsample of 7 rapidly quenched COSMOS galaxies selected through a state-of-the-art statistical method already tested on the determination of galaxies' star formation history. Three out of the 7 COSMOS galaxies…
By combining H$α$ flux measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with UV flux observations from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), we examine the environmental dependence (through central/satellite distinction) of the rapid quenching and rejuvenation of galaxies. H$α$ emissions trace the most massive stars, thereby indicating star-formation on timescales of $\sim 10$ Myr, while UV emission traces star-formation on timescales of $\sim 100$ Myr. These varying timescales are exploited to probe the most recent star-formation histories of galaxies. In this work, we define a class of…
We study recent changes on the star formation history (SFH) of galaxies by means of the ageing diagram (AD), tracing the fraction of stars formed during the last $\sim 20$ Myr through the equivalent width of the H$α$ line and $\sim 1-3$ Gyr through the dust-corrected optical colour $(g-r)_0$ or the Balmer break. We provide a physical characterization by using Pipe3D estimates of the SFH of CALIFA and MaNGA galaxies, in combination with the predictions from IllustrisTNG-100. Our results show that the AD may be divided into four domains that correlate with the stellar mass fractions formed in th…
Shell galaxies make a class of tidally distorted galaxies, characterised by wide concentric arc(s), extending out to large galactocentric distances with sharp outer edges. Recent observations of young massive star clusters in the prominent outer shell of NGC 474 suggest that such systems host extreme conditions of star formation. In this paper, we present a hydrodynamic simulation of a galaxy merger and its transformation into a shell galaxy. We analyse how the star formation activity evolves with time, location-wise within the system, and what are the physical conditions for star formation. D…

We study the star formation quenching mechanism in cluster galaxies by fitting the SED of the Herschel Reference Survey, a complete volume-limited K-band-selected sample of nearby galaxies including objects in different density regions, from the core of the Virgo cluster to the general field. The SED are fitted using the CIGALE SED modelling code. The truncated activity of cluster galaxies is parametrised using a specific SFH with 2 free parameters, the quenching age QA and the quenching factor QF. These 2 parameters are crucial for the identification of the quenching mechanism which acts on l…
We present results from MUSE spatially-resolved spectroscopy of 21 post-starburst galaxies in the centers of 8 clusters from $z\sim0.3$ to $z\sim0.4$. We measure spatially resolved star-formation histories (SFHs), the time since quenching ($t_Q$) and the fraction of stellar mass assembled in the past 1.5 Gyr ($μ_{1.5}$). The SFHs display a clear enhancement of star-formation prior to quenching for 16 out of 21 objects, with at least 10% (and up to $>50$%) of the stellar mass being assembled in the past 1.5 Gyr and $t_Q$ ranging from less than 100 Myrs to $\sim800$ Myrs. By mapping $t_Q$ and $μ…
We investigate the role of galaxy mergers on supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion and star formation quenching in three state-of-the-art cosmological simulations with contrasting physics models: EAGLE, Illustris and IllustrisTNG. We find that recently coalesced 'post-mergers' in all three simulations have elevated SMBH accretion rates by factors of ~2-5. However, rapid (within 500 Myr of coalescence) quenching of star formation is rare, with incidence rates of 0.4% in Illustris, 4.5% in EAGLE and 10% in IllustrisTNG. The rarity of quenching in post-mergers results from substantial gas rese…

The objective of this work is to study how active galactic nuclei (AGN) influence star formation in host galaxies. We present a detailed investigation of the star-formation history and conditions of a $z=2.57$ massive radio galaxy based on VLT/X-SHOOTER and ALMA observations. The deep rest-frame ultraviolet spectrum contains photospheric absorption lines and wind features indicating the presence of OB-type stars. The most significantly detected photospheric features are used to characterize the recent star formation: neither instantaneous nor continuous star-formation history is consistent wit…
We present an analysis of the instantaneous supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion rates in a collection of 1563 post-merger galaxies drawn from the IllustrisTNG simulation. Our sample consists of galaxies that have experienced a merger in the last simulation snapshot (within ~160 Myrs of coalescence) in the redshift range 0<z<1, with merger stellar mass ratios >1:10 and post-merger stellar masses > $10^{10} M_{\odot}$. We find that, on average, the accretion rates of the post-mergers are ~1.7 times higher than in a control sample and that post-mergers are 3-4 times more likely to experience…
Using a novel approach, we study the quenching and bursting of galaxies as a function of stellar mass ($M_{*}$), local environment ($Σ$), and specific star-formation rate (sSFR) using a large spectroscopic sample of $\sim$ 123,000 $GALEX$/SDSS and $\sim$ 420 $GALEX$/COSMOS/LEGA-C galaxies to $z$ $\sim$ 1. We show that out to $z$ $\sim$ 1 and at fixed sSFR and local density, on average, less massive galaxies are quenching, whereas more massive systems are bursting, with a quenching/bursting transition at log($M_{*}$/$M_{\odot}$) $\sim$ 10.5-11 and likely a short quenching/bursting timescale ($\…
We present near-infrared spectroscopic confirmations of a sample of 16 photometrically-selected galaxies with stellar masses log(M_star/M_sun) > 11 at redshift z > 3 from the XMM-VIDEO and COSMOS-UltraVISTA fields using Keck/MOSFIRE as part of the MAGAZ3NE survey. Eight of the ultra-massive galaxies (UMGs) have specific star formation rates (sSFR) < 0.03 Gyr-1, with negligible emission lines. Another seven UMGs show emission lines consistent with active galactic nuclei and/or star formation, while only one UMG has sSFR > 1 Gyr-1. Model star formation histories of these galaxies describe system…
Eridanus II (EriII) is an ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy (M_V=-7.1) located at a distance close to the Milky Way virial radius. Early shallow color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) indicated that it possibly hosted an intermediate-age or even young stellar population, which is unusual for a galaxy of this mass. In this paper, we present new ACS/HST CMDs reaching the oldest main sequence turnoff with excellent photometric precision, and derive a precise star formation history (SFH) for this galaxy through CMD-fitting. This SFH shows that the bulk of the stellar mass in Eri II formed in an extremely sho…
Different mechanisms for quenching star formation in galaxies are commonly invoked in the literature, but the relative impact of each one at different cosmic epochs is still unknown. In particular, the relation between these processes and morphological transformation remains poorly understood. In this work, we measure the effectiveness of changes in star formation rates by analysing a new parameter, the Star Formation Acceleration (SFA), as a function of galaxy morphology. This methodology is capable of identifying both bursting and quenching episodes that occurred in the preceding 300 Myrs. W…
The Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) is a blind narrow-band H$α$+[NII] imaging survey carried out with MegaCam at the CFHT. During pilot observations we have observed NGC 4330, an intermediate mass, edge-on star forming spiral currently falling into the core of the Virgo cluster. New deep observations revealed a low surface brightness 10 kpc tail exhibiting a peculiar filamentary structure. The filaments are remarkably parallel one another and clearly indicate the direction of motion of the galaxy in the Virgo potential. Motivated by the detection of these feat…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of a massive (M_stars~10^11 M_Sun) compact (r_e,UV~100 pc) merger remnant at z=0.66 that is driving a 1000 km/s outflow of cool gas, with no observational trace of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We resolve molecular gas on scales of approximately 1-2 kpc, and our main finding is the discovery of a wing of blueshifted CO(2-1) emission out to -1000 km/s relative to the stars. We argue that this is the molecular component of a multiphase outflow, expelled from the central starburst within the past 5 Myr through stellar feedba…

Thanks to very deep spectroscopic observations carried out at the Large Binocular Telescope, we measured simultaneously stellar age, metallicity and velocity dispersion for C1-23152, an ETG at redshift $z$=3.352, corresponding to an epoch when the Universe was $\sim$1.8 Gyr old. The analysis of its spectrum shows that this galaxy, hosting an AGN, formed and assembled $\sim$2$\times$10$^{11}$ M$_\odot$ shaping its morphology within the $\sim$600 Myr preceding the observations, since $z$$\sim$4.6. The stellar population has a mean mass-weighted age 400$^{+30}_{-70}$ Myr and it is formed between …

During a galaxy merger, the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in each galaxy is thought to sink to the center of the potential and form a supermassive black hole binary; this binary can eject stars via 3-body scattering, bringing the SMBHs ever closer. In a static spherical galaxy model, the binary stalls at a separation of about a parsec after ejecting all the stars in its loss cone -- this is the well-known final parsec problem. However it has been shown that SMBH binaries in non-spherical galactic nuclei harden at a nearly constant rate until reaching the gravitational wave regime. Here we use…
JADES: Differing assembly histories of galaxies -- Observational evidence for bursty SFHs and (mini-)quenching in the first billion years of the Universe
The wish list of astronomers includes a tool that reveals quenching of star formation in galaxies directly as it proceeds. Here, we present a proof-of-concept for a new quenching-and-bursting diagnostic, a "change index" for star formation, that requires only photometric data, provided they include filters such as the violet $uv$ bands used by SkyMapper. The index responds mostly to changes in star-formation rate on a timescale of 20 to 500 Myr and is nearly insensitive to dust extinction. It works effectively to distances of 100 to 150 Mpc. We explore its application to eight example galaxies…

Among the many processes involved in galaxy evolution, those of bar formation, quenching, and feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) seem to be connected, however, the nature of these relations remains unclear. In this work, we aim to elucidate them by studying the formation of a barred galaxy in a major merger of two disks in the IllustrisTNG simulations. This merger involves a coalescence of two supermassive black holes and a sudden switch to the kinetic mode of AGN feedback implemented in the simulations, which leads to the removal of the gas from the inner part of the galaxy, follo…

In this paper, we study the effects of a recent drop in star formation rate (SFR) on the spectra of epoch of reionization (EoR) galaxies, and the resulting degeneracy with the spectral features produced by extreme Lyman continuum leakage. In order to study these effects in the wavelength range relevant for the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we utilize synthetic spectra of simulated EoR galaxies from cosmological simulations together with synthetic spectra of partially quenched mock galaxies. We find that rapid declines in the SFR of EoR galaxies could seriously affect the applicab…
We present Keck-I MOSFIRE spectroscopy in the Y and H bands of GDN-8231, a massive, compact, star-forming galaxy (SFG) at a redshift $z\sim1.7$. Its spectrum reveals both H$_α$ and [NII] emission lines and strong Balmer absorption lines. The H$_α$ and Spitzer MIPS 24 $μ$m fluxes are both weak, thus indicating a low star formation rate of SFR $\lesssim5-10$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. This, added to a relatively young age of $\sim700$ Myr measured from the absorption lines, provides the first direct evidence for a distant galaxy being caught in the act of rapidly shutting down its star formation. Su…
We discuss the latest results of numerical simulations following the orbital decay of massive black hole pairs in galaxy mergers. We highlight important differences between gas-poor and gas-rich hosts, and between orbital evolution taking place at high redshift as opposed to low redshift. Two effects have a huge impact and are rather novel in the context of massive black hole binaries. The first is the increase in characteristic density of galactic nuclei of merger remnants as galaxies are more compact at high redshift due to the way dark halo collapse depends on redshift. This leads naturally…
We analyze the colors and sizes of 32 quiescent (UVJ-selected) galaxies with strong Balmer absorption ($\mbox{EW}(Hδ) \geq 4$Å) at $z\sim0.8$ drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey to test the hypothesis that these galaxies experienced compact, central starbursts before quenching. These recently quenched galaxies, usually referred to as post-starburst galaxies, span a wide range of colors and we find a clear correlation between color and half-light radius, such that bluer galaxies are smaller. We build simple toy models to explain this correlation: a normal star-forming disk plus a central, compa…
Star formation is observed to be suppressed in group and cluster galaxies compared to the field. To gain insight into the quenching process, we have analysed ~2000 galaxies formed in the GIMIC suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The time of quenching varies from ~2 Gyr before accretion (first crossing of r200,c) to >4 Gyr after, depending on satellite and host mass. Once begun, quenching is rapid (>~ 500 Myr) in low-mass galaxies (M* < 10^10 M_Sun), but significantly more protracted for more massive satellites. The simulations predict a substantial role of outflows driven by ram …
The study of cluster post starburst galaxies gives useful insights on the physical processes quenching the star formation in the most massive environments. Exploiting the MUSE data of the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies (GASP) project, we characterise the quenching history of 8 local cluster galaxies that were selected for not showing emission lines in their fiber spectra. We inspect the integrated colors, the Hb rest frame equivalent widths (EW), star formation histories (SFHs) and luminosity-weighted age (LWA) maps finding no signs of current star formation throughout the disks of these …
Ejective feedback as a quenching mechanism in the 1.5 billion years of the universe: detection of neutral gas outflow in a $z=4$ recently quenched galaxy
The physical processes related to the effect of bar in the quenching of star formation in the region between the nuclear/central sub-kpc region and the ends of the bar (bar-region) of spiral galaxies is not fully understood. It is hypothesized that the bar can either stabilize the gas against collapse, inhibiting star formation or efficiently consume all the available gas, with no fuel for further star formation. We present a multi-wavelength study using the archival data of an early-type barred spiral galaxy, Messier 95, which shows signatures of suppressed star formation in the bar-region. U…
Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are ubiquitous in galaxies with a sizable mass. It is expected that a pair of SMBHs originally in the nuclei of two merging galaxies would form a binary and eventually coalesce via a burst of gravitational waves. So far theoretical models and simulations have been unable to predict directly the SMBH merger timescale from ab-initio galaxy formation theory, focusing only on limited phases of the orbital decay of SMBHs under idealized conditions of the galaxy hosts. The predicted SMBH merger timescales are long, of order Gyrs, which could be problematic for future…
We resolve the host galaxies of seven gravitationally lensed quasars at redshift 1.5 to 2.8 using observations with the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimetre Array. Using a visibility-plane lens modelling technique, we create pixellated reconstructions of the dust morphology, and CO line morphology and kinematics. We find that the quasar hosts in our sample can be distinguished into two types: 1) galaxies characterised by clumpy, extended dust distributions ($R_{\rm eff}\sim2$ kpc) and mean star formation rate surface densities comparable to sub-mm-selected dusty star-forming galaxies ($Σ_{\rm SFR}\s…
