Qudits naturally correspond to multi-level quantum systems, which offer an efficient route towards quantum information processing, but their reliability is contingent upon quantum error correction capabilities. In this paper, we present a general procedure for constructing error-correcting qudit codes through the irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SU}(d)$ for any odd integer $d \geq 3.$ Using the Weyl character formula and inner product of characters, we deduce the relevant branching rules, through which we identify the physical Hilbert spaces that contain valid code spaces. We then discuss how two forms of permutation invariance and the Heisenberg-Weyl symmetry of $\mathfrak{su}(d)$ can be exploited to simplify the construction of error-correcting codes. Finally, we use our procedure to construct an infinite class of error-correcting codes encoding a logical qudit into $(d-1)^2$ physical qudits.
It is important for performance studies in quantum technologies to analyze quantum circuits in the presence of noise. We introduce an error probability tensor, a tool to track generalized Pauli error statistics of qudits within quantum circuits composed of qudit Clifford gates. Our framework is compatible with qudit stabilizer quantum error-correcting codes. We show how the error probability tensor can be applied in the most general case, and we demonstrate an error analysis of bipartite qudit repeaters with quantum error correction. We provide an exact analytical solution of the error statist…

An open problem of quantum information theory has been to determine under what conditions universal exchange-only computation is possible for qudits encoded on $d$-state systems for $d>2$. This problem can be posed in terms of representation theory by recognizing that each quantum mechanical swap, generated by exchange-interaction, can be identified with a transposition in a symmetric group, each $d$-state system can be identified with the fundamental representation of $SU(d)$, and each encoded qudit can be identified with an irreducible representation of a Lie algebra generated by transpositi…
We propose two systematic constructions of deletion-correcting codes for protecting quantum information. The first one works with qudits of any dimension, but only one deletion is corrected and the constructed codes are asymptotically bad. The second one corrects multiple deletions and can construct asymptotically good codes. The second one also allows conversion of stabilizer-based quantum codes to deletion-correcting codes, and entanglement assistance.
Error correcting codes with a universal set of transversal gates are a desideratum for quantum computing. Such codes, however, are ruled out by the Eastin-Knill theorem. Moreover, the theorem also rules out codes which are covariant with respect to the action of transversal unitary operations forming continuous symmetries. In this work, starting from an arbitrary code, we construct approximate codes which are covariant with respect to the entire group of local unitary gates in dimension $d$, using quantum reference frames. We show that our codes are capable of efficiently correcting different …
The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code offers the possibility to encode higher-dimensional qudits into individual bosonic modes with, for instance, photonic excitations. Since photons enable the reliable transmission of quantum information over long distances and since GKP states subject to photon loss can be recovered to some extent, the GKP code has found recent applications in theoretical investigations of quantum communication protocols. While previous studies have primarily focused on GKP qubits, the possible practical benefits of higher-dimensional GKP qudits are hitherto widely unexpl…
We investigate a novel class of quantum error correcting codes to correct errors on both qubits and higher-state quantum systems represented as qudits. These codes arise from an original graph-theoretic representation of sets of quantum errors. In this new framework, we represent the algebraic conditions for error correction in terms of edge avoidance between graphs providing a visual representation of the interplay between errors and error correcting codes. Most importantly, this framework supports the development of quantum codes that correct against a predetermined set of errors, in contras…

Autonomous quantum error correction utilizes the engineered coupling of a quantum system to a dissipative ancilla to protect quantum logical states from decoherence. We show that the Knill-Laflamme condition, stating that the environmental error operators should act trivially on a subspace, which then becomes the code subspace, is sufficient for logical qudits to be protected against Markovian noise. It is proven that the error caused by the total Lindbladian evolution in the code subspace can be suppressed up to very long times in the limit of large engineered dissipation, by explicitly deriv…
The concept of asymmetric entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting code (asymmetric EAQECC) is introduced in this article. Codes of this type take advantage of the asymmetry in quantum errors since phase-shift errors are more probable than qudit-flip errors. Moreover, they use pre-shared entanglement between encoder and decoder to simplify the theory of quantum error correction and increase the communication capacity. Thus, asymmetric EAQECCs can be constructed from any pair of classical linear codes over an arbitrary field. Their parameters are described and a Gilbert-Varshamov bound is…
Having protected quantum information is essential to perform quantum computations. One possibility is to reduce the number of particles needing to be protected from noise and instead use systems with more states, so called qudit quantum computers. In this paper we show that codes for these systems can be derived from already known codes, and in particular this procedure removes the need for shared entanglement in entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes, which is a result which could prove to be useful for fault-tolerant qudit, and even qubit, quantum computers.

We propose a new scheme of measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) using an error-correcting code against photon-loss in circuit quantum electrodynamics. We describe a specific protocol of logical single-qubit gates given by sequential cavity measurements for logical MBQC and a generalised Schrödinger cat state is used for a continuous-variable (CV) logical qubit captured in a microwave cavity. It is assumed that a three CV-qudit entangled state is initially prepared in three jointed cavities and the microwave qudit states are individually controlled, operated, and measured through a read…
Local symmetric quantum circuits provide a simple framework to study the dynamics and phases of complex quantum systems with conserved charges. However, some of their basic properties have not yet been understood. Recently, it has been shown that such quantum circuits only generate a restricted subset of symmetric unitary transformations [I. Marvian, Nature Physics, 2022]. In this paper, we consider circuits with 2-local SU(d)-invariant unitaries acting on qudits, i.e., d-dimensional quantum systems. Our results reveal a significant distinction between the cases of d = 2 and d>2. For qubits wi…
In this paper, we provide a framework for constructing entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) from classical additive codes over a finite commutative local Frobenius ring $\mathcal{R}$. At the heart of the framework, and this is one of the main technical contributions of our paper, is a procedure to construct, for an additive code $\mathcal{C}$ over $\mathcal{R}$, a generating set for $\mathcal{C}$ that is in standard form, meaning that it consists purely of isotropic generators and hyperbolic pairs. Moreover, when $\mathcal{R}$ is a Galois ring, we give an exact expres…
Random measurements have been shown to induce a phase transition in an extended quantum system evolving under chaotic unitary dynamics, when the strength of measurements exceeds a threshold value. Below this threshold, a steady state with a sub-thermal volume law entanglement emerges, which is resistant to the disentangling action of measurements, suggesting a connection to quantum error-correcting codes. Here we quantify these notions by identifying a universal, subleading logarithmic contribution to the volume law entanglement entropy: $S^{(2)}(A)=κL_A+\frac{3}{2}\log L_A$ which bounds the m…
