The rapid advancement of image inpainting tools, especially those aimed at removing artifacts, has made digital image manipulation alarmingly accessible. This paper proposes several innovative ideas for detecting inpainting forgeries based on low level noise analysis by combining Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DT-CWT) for feature extraction with convolutional neural networks (CNN) for forged area detection and localization, and lastly by employing an innovative combination of texture segmentation with noise variance estimations. The DT-CWT offers significant advantages due to its shift-invariance, enhancing its robustness against subtle manipulations during the inpainting process. Furthermore, its directional selectivity allows for the detection of subtle artifacts introduced by inpainting within specific frequency bands and orientations. Various neural network architectures were evaluated and proposed. Lastly, we propose a fusion detection module that combines texture analysis with noise variance estimation to give the forged area. Our approach was benchmarked against state-of-the-art methods and demonstrated superior performance over all cited alternatives. The training code (with pretrained model weights) as long as the dataset will be available at https://github.com/jmaba/Deep-dual-tree-complex-neural-network-for-image-inpainting-detection
Inpainting is the technique of reconstructing unknown or damaged portions of an image in a visually plausible way. Inpainting algorithm automatically fills the damaged region in an image using the information available in undamaged region. Propagation of structure and texture information becomes a challenge as the size of damaged area increases. In this paper, a hierarchical inpainting algorithm using wavelets is proposed. The hierarchical method tries to keep the mask size smaller while wavelets help in handling the high pass structure information and low pass texture information separately. …
Image inpainting aims to complete the missing or corrupted regions of images with realistic contents. The prevalent approaches adopt a hybrid objective of reconstruction and perceptual quality by using generative adversarial networks. However, the reconstruction loss and adversarial loss focus on synthesizing contents of different frequencies and simply applying them together often leads to inter-frequency conflicts and compromised inpainting. This paper presents WaveFill, a wavelet-based inpainting network that decomposes images into multiple frequency bands and fills the missing regions in e…
Image inpainting has made significant advances in recent years. However, it is still challenging to recover corrupted images with both vivid textures and reasonable structures. Some specific methods only tackle regular textures while losing holistic structures due to the limited receptive fields of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). On the other hand, attention-based models can learn better long-range dependency for the structure recovery, but they are limited by the heavy computation for inference with large image sizes. To address these issues, we propose to leverage an additional structu…

Road infrastructure can affect the occurrence of road accidents. Therefore, identifying roadway features with high accident probability is crucial. Here, we introduce image inpainting that can assist authorities in achieving safe roadway design with minimal intervention in the current roadway structure. Image inpainting is based on inpainting safe roadway elements in a roadway image, replacing accident-prone (AP) features by using a diffusion model. After object-level segmentation, the AP features identified by the properties of accident hotspots are masked by a human operator and safe roadway…

Wavelet domain inpainting refers to the process of recovering the missing coefficients during the image compression or transmission stage. Recently, an efficient algorithm framework which is called Bregmanized operator splitting (BOS) was proposed for solving the classical variational model of wavelet inpainting. However, it is still time-consuming to some extent due to the inner iteration. In this paper, a novel variational model is established to formulate this reconstruction problem from the view of image decomposition. Then an efficient iterative algorithm based on the split-Bregman method…

Image inpainting is the task of filling masked or unknown regions of an image with visually realistic contents, which has been remarkably improved by Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) recently. Essentially, as an inverse problem, the inpainting has the underlying challenges of reconstructing semantically coherent results without texture artifacts. Many previous efforts have been made via exploiting attention mechanisms and prior knowledge, such as edges and semantic segmentation. However, these works are still limited in practice by an avalanche of learnable prior parameters and prohibitive computat…

In this paper we are particularly interested in the image inpainting problem using directional complex tight wavelet frames. Under the assumption that frame coefficients of images are sparse, several iterative thresholding algorithms for the image inpainting problem have been proposed in the literature. The outputs of such iterative algorithms are closely linked to solutions of several convex minimization models using the balanced approach which simultaneously combines the $l_1$-regularization for sparsity of frame coefficients and the $l_2$-regularization for smoothness of the solution. Due t…

While deep learning methods have achieved state-of-the-art performance in many challenging inverse problems like image inpainting and super-resolution, they invariably involve problem-specific training of the networks. Under this approach, different problems require different networks. In scenarios where we need to solve a wide variety of problems, e.g., on a mobile camera, it is inefficient and costly to use these specially-trained networks. On the other hand, traditional methods using signal priors can be used in all linear inverse problems but often have worse performance on challenging tas…

We propose an image representation scheme combining the local and nonlocal characterization of patches in an image. Our representation scheme can be shown to be equivalent to a tight frame constructed from convolving local bases (e.g. wavelet frames, discrete cosine transforms, etc.) with nonlocal bases (e.g. spectral basis induced by nonlinear dimension reduction on patches), and we call the resulting frame elements {\it convolution framelets}. Insight gained from analyzing the proposed representation leads to a novel interpretation of a recent high-performance patch-based image inpainting al…

3D photography renders a static image into a video with appealing 3D visual effects. Existing approaches typically first conduct monocular depth estimation, then render the input frame to subsequent frames with various viewpoints, and finally use an inpainting model to fill those missing/occluded regions. The inpainting model plays a crucial role in rendering quality, but it is normally trained on out-of-domain data. To reduce the training and inference gap, we propose a novel self-supervised diffusion model as the inpainting module. Given a single input image, we automatically construct a tra…

In this paper, we propose a numerical strategy to define a multiscale analysis for color and multicomponent images based on the representation of data on a graph. Our approach consists in computing the graph of an image using the psychovisual information and analysing it by using the spectral graph wavelet transform. We suggest introducing color dimension into the computation of the weights of the graph and using the geodesic distance as a means of distance measurement. We thus have defined a wavelet transform based on a graph with perceptual information by using the CIELab color distance. Thi…
In this paper, we consider the challenge of face morphing attacks, which substantially undermine the integrity of face recognition systems such as those adopted for use in border protection agencies. Morph detection can be formulated as extracting fine-grained representations, where local discriminative features are harnessed for learning a hypothesis. To acquire discriminative features at different granularity as well as a decoupled spectral information, we leverage wavelet domain analysis to gain insight into the spatial-frequency content of a morphed face. As such, instead of using images i…

Convolutional neural networks are able to perform a hierarchical learning process starting with local features. However, a limited attention is paid to enhancing such elementary level features like edges. We propose and evaluate two wavelet-based edge feature enhancement methods to preprocess the input images to convolutional neural networks. The first method develops feature enhanced representations by decomposing the input images using wavelet transform and limited reconstructing subsequently. The second method develops such feature enhanced inputs to the network using local modulus maxima o…

In most practical situations, the compression or transmission of images and videos creates distortions that will eventually be perceived by a human observer. Vice versa, image and video restoration techniques, such as inpainting or denoising, aim to enhance the quality of experience of human viewers. Correctly assessing the similarity between an image and an undistorted reference image as subjectively experienced by a human viewer can thus lead to significant improvements in any transmission, compression, or restoration system. This paper introduces the Haar wavelet-based perceptual similarity…

In Image Compression, the researchers' aim is to reduce the number of bits required to represent an image by removing the spatial and spectral redundancies. Recently discrete wavelet transform and wavelet packet has emerged as popular techniques for image compression. The wavelet transform is one of the major processing components of image compression. The result of the compression changes as per the basis and tap of the wavelet used. It is proposed that proper selection of mother wavelet on the basis of nature of images, improve the quality as well as compression ratio remarkably. We suggest …

This paper presents a new color image enhancement technique based on modified MultiScale Retinex(MSR) algorithm and visual quality of the enhanced images are evaluated using a new metric, namely, wavelet energy. The color image enhancement is achieved by down sampling the value component of HSV color space converted image into three scales (normal, medium and fine) following the contrast stretching operation. These down sampled value components are enhanced using the MSR algorithm. The value component is reconstructed by averaging each pixels of the lower scale image with that of the upper sca…
Implicit neural representations (INRs) have recently advanced numerous vision-related areas. INR performance depends strongly on the choice of the nonlinear activation function employed in its multilayer perceptron (MLP) network. A wide range of nonlinearities have been explored, but, unfortunately, current INRs designed to have high accuracy also suffer from poor robustness (to signal noise, parameter variation, etc.). Inspired by harmonic analysis, we develop a new, highly accurate and robust INR that does not exhibit this tradeoff. Wavelet Implicit neural REpresentation (WIRE) uses a contin…
