Using modern tools of relativistic quantum information, we compare entanglement of a free, massive scalar field in the Bunch-Davies vacuum in the cosmological patch of de Sitter spacetime with that in Minkowski spacetime. There is less entanglement between spatially localized field modes in de Sitter, despite the fact that there is more entanglement stored in the field on large scales. This shows that inflation does not produce entanglement between local observables.
We study the primary entanglement effect on the decoherence of fields reduced density matrix which are in interaction with another fields or independent mode functions. We show that the primary entanglement has a significant role in decoherence of the system quantum state. We find that the existence of entanglement could couple dynamical equations coming from Schrödinger equation. We show if one wants to see no effect of the entanglement parameter in decoherence then interaction terms in Hamiltonian can not be independent from each other. Generally, including the primary entanglement destroys …
We study the emergence of quantum entanglement in multi-field inflation. In this scenario, the perturbations of one field contribute to the observable curvature perturbation, while multi-field dynamics with the other fields affect the curvature perturbation through particle production and entanglement. We develop a general formalism which defines the quantum entanglement between the perturbations of the multiple fields both in the Heisenberg and Schrödinger pictures, and show that entanglement between different fields can arise dynamically in the context of multi-field inflationary scenarios. …
Using the fact that we only observe those modes which exit the Hubble horizon during inflation, one can calculate the entanglement entropy of such long-wavelength perturbations by tracing out unobservable sub-Hubble fluctuations they are coupled to. On requiring that this perturbative entanglement entropy, which increases with time, obey the covariant entropy bound for an accelerating background, we find an upper bound on the duration of inflation. This presents a new perspective on the (meta-)stability of de Sitter spacetime and an associated lifetime for it.
In this paper we study the survival of entanglement of a scalar field state created during inflation. We find that there exist UV-finite subdominant contributions to the entanglement entropy per momentum mode that scale with the number of e-folds between horizon exit and the end of inflation, and depend on the logarithm of the radius of the entangling surface, which can be taken to be the horizon sphere. We argue that this entanglement entropy allows for the formation of entangled Primordial Black Holes (PBH). We find that the entropy arising from the entanglement between PBH is small compared…
If the inflaton couples to other degrees of freedom that populate the post-inflationary stage, such coupling modifies the dynamics of the inflaton \emph{during} inflation. We consider light fermions Yukawa coupled to the inflaton as "unobserved" degrees of freedom integrated out of the total density matrix. Tracing out these degrees of freedom yields a \emph{mixed} density matrix whose time evolution is described by an effective field theory. We show that the coupling leads to profuse fermion pair production for super-Hubble inflaton fluctuations which lead to the \emph{growth of entanglement …
We give a new interpretation of the effect of initial state entanglement on the spectrum of vacuum fluctuations. We consider an initially entangled state between two free massive scalar fields in de Sitter space. We construct the initial state by making use of a Bogoliubov transformation between the Bunch-Davies vacuum and a four mode squeezed state, and then derive the exact power spectrum for one of the scalar fields. We demonstrate that an oscillatory spectrum hardly appears for the initially entangled state unless an ad hoc absolute value of the Bogoliubov coefficients is chosen.
We investigate quantum entanglement of a scalar field in the inflationary universe. By introducing a bipartite system using a lattice model of scalar field, we apply the separability criterion based on the partial transpose operation and numerically calculate the bipartite entanglement between separate spatial regions. We find that the initial entangled state becomes separable or dis-entangled when the size of the spatial regions exceed the Hubble horizon. This is necessary condition for the appearance of classicality of the quantum fluctuation. We further investigate the condition for the app…
Although the paradigm of inflation has been extensively studied to demonstrate how macroscopic inhomogeneities in our universe originate from quantum fluctuations, most of the established literature ignores the crucial role that entanglement between the modes of the fluctuating field plays in its observable predictions. In this paper, we import techniques from quantum information theory to reveal hitherto undiscovered predictions for inflation which, in turn, signals how quantum entanglement across cosmological scales can affect large scale structure. Our key insight is that observable long-wa…

The density fluctuations that we observe in the universe today are thought to originate from quantum fluctuations produced during a phase of the early universe called inflation. By evolving a wavefunction describing two coupled Fourier modes of a scalar field forward through an inflationary epoch, we demonstrate that non-linear effects can result in a generation of entanglement entropy between modes with different momenta in a scalar field during the inflationary period when just one of the modes is observed. Through this mechanism, the field would experience decoherence and appear more like a…
In inflationary cosmology all particle states decay as a consequence of the lack of kinematic thresholds. The decay of an initial single particle state yields an \emph{entangled quantum state of the product particles}. We generalize and extend a manifestly unitary field theoretical method to obtain the time evolution of the quantum state. We consider the decay of a light scalar field with mass $M\ll H$ with a cubic coupling in de Sitter space-time. Radiative corrections feature an infrared enhancement manifest as poles in $Δ=M^2/3H^2$ and we obtain the quantum state in an expansion in $Δ$. To …

We consider observational limits on a proposed model of the string landscape in inflation. In this scenario, effects from the decoherence of entangled quantum states in long-wavelength modes in the universe result in modifications to the Friedmann Equation and a corresponding modification to inflationary dynamics. Previous work by Holman, Mersini-Houghton, and Takahashi suggested that such effects could provide an explanation for well-known anomalies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), such as the lack of power on large scales and the "cold spot" seen by both the WMAP and Planck satellit…
We provide an explicit calculation of the evolution of the cosmic entanglement entropy in the early universe before the matter dominant era. This is made possible by invoking the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model, which has the advantage of preserving unitarity and providing a smooth transition between the inflation epoch and the radiation dominant era. The dynamics of the universe is described by the quantization in the minisuperspace of the GCG model, following the prescription proposed by Wheeler and DeWitt. Two sources of contribution to the cosmic entanglement entropy are considered: …
We investigate classical and quantum correlations of a quantum field in the inflationary universe using a particle detector model. By considering the entanglement and correlations between two comoving detectors interacting with a scalar field, we find that the entanglement between the detectors becomes zero after their physical separation exceeds the Hubble horizon. Furthermore, the quantum discord, which is defined as the quantum part of total correlation, approaches zero on super horizon scale. These behaviors support appearance of classical nature of the quantum fluctuation generated during…
There exists the "entropy problem" of the early universe, that is, why did the universe begin with an extremely low entropy and how did it evolve into such high entropy at late times? It has been long believed that inflation cannot be the solution since it requires an extremely low entropy to ever occur. However, we point out that since the inflation is always accompanied with a horizon, the correct probability of inflation is associated with the quantum entanglement entropy, which should in principle be larger than what considered previously. This motivates us to reexamine the issue by comput…
The effects of the entanglement of the inflaton field which initially entangled with those of another field on observables like power spectrum are known in the context of the Schrödinger field theory. To clarify this effect in Heisenberg picture, there were some attempts to construct the initial entangled state by making use of an entangled transformation (like Bogoliubov transformation) between the Bunch-Davies vacuums and squeezed states. We study the role of the time-dependent entangled transformation in the Schrödinger field theory. We derive the relation between two vacuum states which th…
The fluctuations in the inflaton field at the end of inflation which seed the density perturbations are prepared in a pure quantum state. It is generally assumed that some physics causes this pure state to decohere so that it should be treated probabilistically. We show that the entanglement entropy between the universe inside our observable horizon and that outside our horizon is sufficient to do this. For the modes which are super-Hubble at the end of inflation, this entanglement entropy grows with volume inside the horizon, rather than with the horizon's area, and is proportional to the num…
We revisit the efficiency of Schwinger mechanism in creating charged pairs during inflation. We consider a minimal setup of inflation in which the inflaton field is a complex scalar field charged under a $U(1)$ gauge field. There is a time dependent conformal coupling which pumps energy from the inflaton field to the gauge field to furnish a nearly constant background electric field energy density to drive the Schwinger mechanism. The coupling between the gauge field and the scalar field induces a time dependent effective mass for the inflaton field. The requirement of a long period of slow-ro…
We investigate entanglement of a quantum field in de Sitter spacetime using a particle detector model. By considering the entanglement between two comoving detectors interacting with a scalar field, it is possible to detect the entanglement of the scalar field by swapping it to detectors. For the massless minimal scalar field, we find that the entanglement between the detectors cannot be detected when their physical separation exceeds the Hubble horizon scale. This behavior supports the appearance of the classical nature of quantum fluctuations generated during the inflationary era.
We present a leptogenesis scenario associated with inflationary models involving non-Abelian gauge fields within the standard model of particle physics (SM). We show that this class of inflationary models generates intrinsic birefringent gravitational waves that through the gravitational chiral anomaly in SM, can naturally create a net lepton number density. The CP violating interaction is produced by tensor fluctuations of the gauge field, while the efficiency of this process is determined by the effective background value of the gauge field. We demonstrate that this mechanism can create the …
We present counter examples to the claim that the $λϕ^4$ inflaton potential is excluded by recent cosmological data. Finding counter examples requires that the actually observed primordial fluctuations are generated at the onset of the slow-roll regime of inflation. This set up for the initial conditions is therefore different from the usual scenario of chaotic inflation where inflation starts long before the observed fluctuations are created. The primordial power spectrum of "just enough" chaotic inflation violates scale-invariance in a way consistent with observations.
I study ultralight particle creation which becomes from the Yukawa interaction between the inflaton and the thermal bath during fresh inflation. Particle creation is important in the first stages of fresh inflation, when the nonequilibrium thermal effects are important. I find that the number density of the ultralight created particles is more important as the scale factor growth rate is more large (i.e., for $p$ large -- $a \sim t^p$). Ultralight boson fields created during fresh inflation could be an alternative mechanism to cosmological constant to explain the discrepancy between the observ…
We study the violation of Bell-Mermin-Klyshko (BMK) inequalities in initial quantum states of scalar fields in inflation. We show that the Bell inequality is maximally violated by the Bunch-Davies vacuum which is a two-mode squeezed state of a scalar field. However, we find that the violation of the BMK inequalities does not increase with the number of modes to measure. We then consider a non-Bunch-Davies vacuum expressed by a four-mode squeezed state of two scalar fields. Remarkably, we find that the violation of the BMK inequalities increases exponentially with the number of modes to measure…
In this paper it is presented the model of a multiverse made up of universes which are created in entangled pairs that conserve the total momentum conjugated to the scale factor. For the background spacetime it is assumed a FRW metric with a scalar field with mass $m$ minimally coupled to gravity. For the fields that propagate in the entangled spacetimes it is considered the perturbations of the spacetime and the scalar field, whose quantum states become entangled too. They turn out to be in a quasi thermal state and the corresponding thermodynamical magnitudes are computed. Three observables …
A decade ago, the first leptogenesis model based on inflation was proposed, where the complex phase of the inflaton field carries lepton number. If the inflaton field is an axion, it can couple to gravitational waves and gauge fields via. Chern-Simons invariants. Due to these couplings, birefringent gravitational and gauge primordial perturbations are created during inflation to generate a lepton asymmetry, establishing a possible connection between non-vanishing TB-parity violating polarization cross-correlations and leptogenesis. We also discuss the prospect for a subset of these models can …
We display some simple cosmological solutions of gravity theories with quadratic Ricci curvature terms added to the Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian which exhibit anisotropic inflation. The Hubble expansion rates are constant and unequal in three orthogonal directions. We describe the evolution of the simplest of these homogeneous and anisotropic cosmological models from its natural initial state and evaluate the deviations they will create from statistical isotropy in the fluctuations produced during a period of anisotropic inflation. The anisotropic inflation is not a late-time attractor in these…
In this paper we will discuss analytically the perturbations created from a slowly rolling subdominant spectator field which decays much before the end of inflation. The quantum fluctuations of such a spectator field can seed perturbations on very large scales and explain the temperature anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background radiation with moderate non-Gaussianity, provided the relevant modes leave the Hubble patch while the spectator is slowly rolling. Furthermore, the perturbations are purely {\it adiabatic} since the inflaton decay dominates and creates all the Standard Model degree…
We present an intrinsic leptogenesis mechanism in models of axion inflation with a classical SU(2) gauge field. The gauge field is coupled to the axion with a Chern-Simons interaction and comprises a tiny fraction of the total energy, $\frac{ρ_{_{\rm YM}}}{ρ_{_{\rm tot}}}\lesssimε^2$. However, it has spin-2 fluctuations which breaks the parity and leads to the generation of chiral gravitational waves during inflation. By the gravitational anomaly in SM, it naturally creates a net lepton number density, sufficient to explain the matter asymmetry. We show that this mechanism can generate the obs…
We point out that a successful inflationary magnetogenesis could be realised if we break the local U(1) gauge symmetry during inflation. The effective electric charge is fixed as a fundamental constant, which allows us to obtain an almost scale invariant magnetic spectrum avoiding both the strong coupling and back reaction problems. We examine the corrections to the primordial curvature perturbation due to these stochastic electromagnetic fields and find that, at both linear and non-linear orders, the contributions from the electromagnetic field are negligible compared to those created from va…
In the inflationary scenario all the matter constituting the universe was created from the process of reheating after inflation. Recent development of the theory of reheating is briefly reviewed. The list of topics includes elementary (perturbative) theory of reheating; quantum field theory in a time-varying background; parametric resonance and explosive particle creation; non-thermal phase transitions from reheating; baryogenesis from reheating; residual oscillations of the scalar field, and other cosmological applications.
A computation of the inflationary observables n_{s} and r is made for `logamediate' inflation where the cosmological scale factor expands as $a=\exp (A(\ln t)^λ)$, and is compared to their predicted values in the intermediate inflationary theory, where $a=\exp (Bt^{f})$. Both versions prove to be consistent with observational measurements of the cosmic background radiation. It is shown that the dynamics of a single inflaton field can be mimicked by a system of several fields in an analogous manner to that created by the joint evolution of the fields in assisted power-law inflation.
We consider a multiverse scenario made up of classically disconnected regions of the space-time that are, nevertheless, in a quantum entangled state. The addition of a scalar field enriches the model and allows us to treat both the inflationary and the `oscillatory stage' of the universe on the same basis. Imposing suitable boundary conditions on the state of the multiverse, two different representations are constructed related by a Bogoliubov transformation. We compute the thermodynamic magnitudes of the entanglement, such as entropy and energy, explore the effects introduced by the presence …
The usual scenario of ``eternal inflation'' involves an approximately de Sitter spacetime undergoing upward fluctuations of the local expansion rate $H$. This spacetime requires frequent violations of the Null Energy Condition (NEC). We investigate the fluctuations of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field in de Sitter space as a possible source of such violations. We find that fluctuations of the energy-momentum tensor smeared in space and time are well-defined and may provide the NEC violations. Our results for slow-roll inflation are consistent with the standard calculations of infl…
In this paper we follow a new approach for particle creation by a localized strong gravitational field. The approach is based on a definition of the physical vacuum drawn from Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Using the fact that the gravitational field red-shifts the frequency modes of the vacuum, a condition on the minimum stregth of the gravitational field required to achieve real particle creation is derived. Application of this requirement on a Schwartzchid black hole resulted in deducing an upper limit on the region, outside the event horizon, where real particles can be created. Using t…
