Quantum entanglement between the spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom in condensed matter systems can emerge due to an interplay between spin-orbit and vibronic interactions. Heavy transition metal ions decorated on a face-centered cubic lattice, for example, in $5d^1$ double perovskites, are particularly suited to support these quantum entangled states, but direct evidence has not yet been presented. In this work, we report additional peaks in the low-energy spectra of a $5d^1$ double perovskite, Ba$_2$CaReO$_6$, which cannot be explained by adopting a purely classical description of lattice vibrations. Instead, our theoretical analysis demonstrates that these spectroscopic signatures are characteristic of orbital-lattice entangled states in Ba$_2$CaReO$_6$. Crucially, both theory and experiment demonstrate that these quantum-entangled states persist to low temperatures, despite the onset of multipolar order.
The conditions under which ferromagnetism may occur in transition metal oxides with partially filled $t_{2g}$ shells such as vanadium-based perovskites are studied using a combination of density functional and single-site dynamical mean field methods. For reasonable values of the correlation strength, rotations of the VO$_6$ octahedra play an important role in enabling ferromagnetism, with ferromagnetism typically occurring for rotations larger than a nonzero critical value. Ferromagnetism is suppressed near the Mott insulating phase but the phase boundary is otherwise only weakly dependent on…
The wide variety of complex physical behavior exhibited in transition metal oxides, particularly the perovskites A$B$O$_3$, makes them a material family of interest in many research areas, but the drastically different electronic structures possible in these oxides raises challenges in describing them accurately within density functional theory (DFT) and related methods. Here we evaluate the ability of the ACBN0, a recently developed first-principles approach to computing the Hubbard $U$ correction self-consistently, to describe the structural and electronic properties of the first-row transit…
A minimal model is proposed for the perovskite manganese oxides showing the strongly incoherent charge dynamics with a suppressed Drude weight in the ferromagnetic and metallic phase near the insulator. We investigate a generalized double-exchange model including three elements; the orbital degeneracy of $e_g$ conduction bands, the Coulomb interaction and fluctuating Jahn-Teller distortions. We demonstrate that Lancz$\ddot{\rm o}$s diagonalization calculations combined with Monte Carlo sampling of the largely fluctuating lattice distortions result in the optical conductivity which quantitative…
We investigate the correlation-induced Mott, magnetic, and topological phase transitions in artificial (111) bilayers of perovskite transition-metal oxides LaAuO$_3$ and SrIrO$_3$ for which the previous density-functional theory calculations predicted topological insulating states. Using the dynamical-mean-field theory with realistic band structures and Coulomb interactions, LaAuO$_3$ bilayer is shown to be far away from a Mott insulating regime, and a topological-insulating state is robust. On the other hand, SrIrO$_3$ bilayer is on the verge of an orbital-selective topological Mott transitio…
For 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ spin-orbit-coupled electron configurations, the notion of nonmagnetic j=3/2 quartet ground state discussed in classical textbooks is at odds with the observed variety of magnetic properties. Here we throw fresh light on the electronic structure of 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ ions in molybdenum- and osmium-based double-perovskite systems and reveal different kinds of on-site many-body physics in the two families of compounds: while the sizable magnetic moments and $g$ factors measured experimentally are due to both metal $d$-ligand $p$ hybridization and dynamic Jahn-Teller interacti…
Properties and mechanism of the magnetic phase transition of the perovskite-type Ti oxides, which is driven by the Ti-O-Ti bond angle distortion, are studied theoretically by using the effective spin and pseudo-spin Hamiltonian with strong Coulomb repulsion. It is shown that the A-type antiferromagnetic(AFM(A)) to ferromagnetic(FM) phase transition occurs as the Ti-O-Ti bond angle is decreased. Through this phase transition, the orbital state is hardly changed so that the spin-exchange coupling along the c-axis changes nearly continuously from positive to negative and takes approximately zero …
We report a study of the magnetoresistance (MR) of the metallic perovskite oxide LaNiO$_{3-δ}$ as a function of the oxygen stoichiometry $δ$ ($δ\leq$ 0.14), magnetic field (H $\leq 6T$) and temperature (1.5K $\leq $ T $\leq $ 25K). We find a strong dependence of the nature of MR on the oxygen stoichiometry. The MR at low temperatures change from positive to negative as the sample becomes more oxygen deficient (i.e, $δ$ increases). Some of the samples which are more resistive, show a resistivity minima at $T_{min}$ $\approx$ 20K. We find that in these samples the MR is positive at T > $T_{min}$…
Taking the orbital degeneracy of $e_g$ conduction bands and the Coulomb interaction into account in a double-exchange model, we investigate charge dynamics of perovskite Mn oxides by the Lancz$\ddot{\rm o}$s diagonalization method. In the metallic phase near the Mott insulator, it is found that the optical conductivity for a spin-polarized two-dimensional system exhibits a weight transfer to a broad and incoherent structure within the lower-Hubbard band together with a suppressed Drude weight. It reproduces qualitative feature of the experimental results. As an orbital effect, we find that an …
Filling-control metal-insulator transitions (MITs) and related electronic phase diagrams have been investigated for hole-doped vanadium oxides, Pr_{1-x}Ca_xVO_3, Nd_{1-x}Sr_xVO_3 and Y_{1-x}Ca_xVO_3, with perovskite structure. The increase of the doping level x causes the melting of the G-type (and C-type) orbital order, prior to or concomitantly with the MIT, due partly to the doped-hole motion and partly to the ramdom potential arising from the quenched disorder. In particular, the G-type spin- and C-type orbital-ordered phase present in Y_{1-x}Ca_xVO_3 disappears immediately upon hole dopin…
The electronic properties of Mott insulators realized in (111) bilayers of perovskite transition-metal oxides are studied. The low-energy effective Hamiltonians for such Mott insulators are derived in the presence of a strong spin-orbit coupling. These models are characterized by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction and the anisotropic interaction whose form depends on the $d$ orbital occupancy. From exact diagonalization analyses on finite clusters, the ground state phase diagrams are derived, including a Kitaev spin liquid phase in a narrow parameter regime for $t_{2g}$ systems. Slav…
We discover hidden Rashba fine structure in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and demonstrate its quantum control by vibrational coherence through symmetry-selective vibronic (electron-phonon) coupling. Above a critical threshold of a single-cycle terahertz pump field, a Raman phonon mode distinctly modulates the middle excitonic states with {\em persistent} coherence for more than ten times longer than the ones on two sides that predominately couple to infrared phonons. These vibronic quantum beats, together with first-principles modeling of phonon periodically modulated Rashba parameters, identify a {\em …
The spinel/perovskite heterointerface $γ$-Al$_2$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ hosts a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) with electron mobilities exceeding those in its all-perovskite counterpart LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ by more than an order of magnitude despite the abundance of oxygen vacancies which act as electron donors as well as scattering sites. By means of resonant soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and \textit{ab initio} calculations we reveal the presence of a sharply localized type of oxygen vacancies at the very interface due to the local breaking of the perovskite symmetry. We explain the ex…
We have prepared crystallographically ordered and disorder specimens of the double perovskite, Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ and investigated their magnetoresistance behaviour. The extent of ordering between the Fe and Mo sites in the two samples is determined by Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffraction patterns and reconfirmed by Mössbauer studies. While the ordered sample exhibits the sharp low-field response, followed by moderate changes in the magnetoresistance at higher fields, the disordered sample is characterised by the absence of the spectacular low-field response. We argue that the low field …
Iron perovskites CaFeO_3 and La_{0.33}Sr_{0.67}FeO_3 show charge disproportionation, resulting in charge-ordered states with Fe^{3+}:Fe^{5+} =1:1 and =2:1, respectively. We have made photoemission and unrestricted Hartree-Fock band-structure calculation of CaFeO_3 and compared it with La_{0.33}Sr_{0.67}FeO_3. With decreasing temperature, a gradual decrease of the spectral weight near the Fermi level occurred in CaFeO_3 as in La_{0.33}Sr_{0.67}FeO_3 although lattice distortion occurs only in CaFeO_3. Hartree-Fock calculations have indicated that both the breathing and tilting distortions are ne…
A microscopic characterisation of the phase transitions associated with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in manganese perovskite oxides is a very important ingredient in the quest of understanding its underlying mechanism. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is most suitable to investigate some of their reported hallmarks, including charge ordering, lattice distortions, and electronic phase separation. Here we investigate Bi1-XCaXMnO3 (BCMO) with x=0.76. At this composition, BCMO develops an insulating charge-ordered phase upon cooling, whose study as a function of temperature will allow ident…
The effects of atomic-scale disorder and charge (de)localization holds significant importance, and they provide essential insights in unravelling the role that strong and weak correlations play in condensed matter systems. For perovskite oxide heterostructures, while disorders introduced via various external stimuli have strong influences on the (de)localization of the interfacial two-dimensional (2D) electrons, these factors alone could not fully account for the system's charge dynamics where interfacial hybridization holds very strong influence. Here, we determine that the displaced 2D free elec…
Compounds with distorted perovskite structure of the 4-f and 3-d transition metals with the common formula LnTO3 (where Ln is rare-earth element, T is an element from the Fe group) are the most multifold binary oxides of these two groups elements. Wide range of stability for this structure allows the realization of combinations of the Lanthanides with all the transition metals except the Nickel. Quite interesting physical phenomena take place in these oxides like charge and orbital ordering; relatively independent magnetic lattices of the both metals; particular magnetic structures; high optic…
Interplay of spin-orbit coupling and vibronic coupling on heavy $d^1$ site of cubic double perovskites is investigated by ab initio calculations. The stabilization energy of spin-orbital-lattice entangled states is found comparable to or larger than the exchange interactions, suggesting the presence of Jahn-Teller dynamics in the systems. In Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$, the pseudo JT coupling enhances the mixing of the ground and excited spin-orbit multiplet states, which results in strong temperature dependence of effective magnetic moments. The entanglement of the spin and lattice degrees of freedom indu…
The emergence of superlattice periodicities at metal to insulator transitions in hole doped perovskite oxides responds to a rearrangement of the local atomic structure, and electron and spin density distribution. Originally, the ionic model based on a checkerboard- type atomic distribution served to describe the low temperature charge and orbital ordered (COO) phases arising in half- doped manganites. In the last years, the exploitation of resonant x- ray scattering (RXS) capabilities has shown the need to revisit these concepts and improve the picture. Yet, we have realised that COO is a more…
In this work multiferroic thin films of Bi containing perovskite oxides are discussed, where the driving force for ferroelectricity are the Bi3+ lone-pair electrons. First, a brief introduction of Bi containing multiferroic perovskite oxides will be presented to describe the mechanisms for establishing magnetic and ferroelectric order in these compounds and some recent developments in this field of research are reported. The second section addresses experimental aspects of epitaxial thin film growth of BiMnO3, (Bi0.9La0.1)2NiMnO6 (BLNMO) and BiFeO3 thin films by pulsed laser deposition. The th…
Epitaxial strain offers an effective route to tune the physical parameters in transition metal oxides. So far, most studies have focused on the effects of strain on the bandwidths and crystal field splitting, but recent experimental and theoretical works have shown that also the effective Coulomb interaction changes upon structural modifications. This effect is expected to be of paramount importance in current material engineering studies based on epitaxy-based material synthesization. Here, we perform constrained random phase approximation calculations for prototypical oxides with a different…
A fully ab initio scheme based on quantum chemical wavefunction methods is used to investigate the correlated multiorbital electronic structure of a 3d-metal compound, LaCoO3. The strong short-range electron correlations, involving both Co and O orbitals, are treated by multireference techniques. The use of effective parameters like the Hubbard U and interorbital U', J terms and the problems associated with their explicit calculation are avoided with this approach. We provide new insight into the spin-state transition at about 90 K and the nature of charge carriers in the doped material. Our r…
With their broad range of magnetic, electronic and structural properties, transition metal perovskite oxides ABO3 have long served as a platform for testing condensed matter theories. In particular, their insulating character - found in most compounds - is often ascribed to dynamical electronic correlations through the celebrated Mott-Hubbard mechanism where gaping arises from a uniform, symmetry-preserving electron repulsion mechanism. However, structural distortions are ubiquitous in perovskites and their relevance with respect to dynamical correlations in producing this rich array of proper…
We report the first observation of coherent surface states on cubic perovskite oxide SrVO3(001) thin films through spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy. A direct link between the observed atomic-scale interference patterns and the formation of a dxy-derived surface state is supported by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, we show that the apical oxygens on the topmost VO2 plane play a critical role in controlling the spectral weight of the observed coherent surface state.
Polycrystalline rhodium(IV) oxide perovskite SrRhO3 was obtained by high-pressure synthesis techniques, followed by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat. The title compound has five 4d-electrons per perovskite unit and shows Fermi-liquid behavior in its electrical resistivity. The magnetic susceptibility is large [chi(300K) \~1.1*10^{-3} emu/mol-Rh] and proportional to 1/T^2 (< 380 K), while there is no magnetic long-range order above 1.8 K. The specific heat measurements indicate a probable magnetic contribution below ~ 15 K, which is not pred…
Four anti-perovskite-type compounds, ZnNNi3, ZnCNi3, SnNCo3, and SnCCo3, are synthesised through reactions between ingredient metal oxides and organic compound melamine (C3H6N6). ZnNNi3 and ZnCNi3 are selectively synthesised by choosing different reaction temperatures and nominal oxide-to-melamine ratios. SnNCo3 is synthesised for the first time by this melamine method. Resistivity, magnetisation, and heat capacity measurements reveal that SnNCo3 is a correlated metal with a high density of states at the Fermi level. Our results demonstrate that this feasible synthetic route using melamine is …
The first examples of single crystal epitaxial thin films of a high entropy perovskite oxide are synthesized. Pulsed laser deposition is used to grow the configurationally disordered ABO3 perovskite, Ba(Zr0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3, epitaxially on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the films are single phase with excellent crystallinity and atomically abrupt interfaces to the underlying substrates. Atomically-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping shows a uniform and random distribution of all B-site cations. …
Monte Carlo simulations are performed on the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model with the 2-1-4 layered perovskite structure as a minimal model for checkerboard charge ordering phenomena in layered perovskite oxides. Due to the interlayer frustration, only 2D long-range order emerges with a finite correlation length along the c axis. Critical exponents of the transition change continuously as a function of the interlayer coupling constant. The interlayer long-range Coulomb interaction decays exponentially and is negligible even between the second-neighbor layers. Instead, monoclinic distortion …
We present transport and thermal data for the quadruple-perovskites MCu3(Ti1-xRux)4O12 where 0 < x < 1. A metal-insulator transition (MIT) occurs for Ru concentrations x~0.75. At the same time, the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic state is destroyed and it's magnetic entropy suppressed by Ru on a 1:1 basis. This implies that each Ru transfers an electron to a Cu ion and thus the MIT correlates with filling the Cu 3d shell. The Cu spin entropy in this strongly correlated electron material provides a unique probe among MIT systems.
Epitaxial strain is a proven route to enhancing the properties of complex oxides, however, the details of how the atomic structure accommodates strain are poorly understood due to the difficulty of measuring the oxygen positions in thin films. We present a general methodology for determining the atomic structure of strained oxide films via x-ray diffraction, which we demonstrate using LaNiO3 films. The oxygen octahedral rotations and distortions have been quantified by comparing the intensities of half-order Bragg peaks, arising from the two unit cell periodicity of the octahedral rotations, w…
Taking into account Goodenough's superexchange rules, including both full structural relaxation and spin-orbit coupling, and checking strong correlation effects, we look for compensated half metals within the class of oxide double perovskites materials. Identifying likely half metallic (or half semimetallic) antiferromagnets, the full complications including orbital magnetism are included in order to arrive at realistic predictions of designed magnetic compounds with (near) vanishing net moment. After sorting through several candidates that have not been considered previously, two materials, K…
The properties and mechanism of the magnetic phase transition of the perovskite-type Ti oxides, which is driven by the Ti-O-Ti bond angle distortion, are studied theoretically by using the effective spin and pseudospin Hamiltonian with strong Coulomb repulsion. It is shown that the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM(A)) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition occurs as the Ti-O-Ti bond angle is decreased. Through this phase transition, the orbital state changes only little whereas the spin-exchange coupling along the c-axis is expected to change from positive to negative nearly continuously and appr…
Hexagonal oxide perovskites, in contrast to the more familiar perovskites, allow for face-sharing of metal-oxygen octahedra or trigonal prisms within their structural frameworks. This results in dimers, trimers, tetramers, or longer fragments of chains of face-sharing octahedra in the crystal structures, and consequently in much shorter metal-metal distances and lower metal-oxygen-metal bond angles than are seen in the more familiar perovskites. The presence of the face-sharing octahedra can have a dramatic impact on magnetic properties of these compounds, and dimer-based materials, in particu…
We have investigated the structural phase transitions of the transition metal oxide perovskites SrTiO$_{3}$, LaAlO$_{3}$ and LaTiO$_{3}$ using the screened hybrid density functional of Heyd, Scuseria and Ernzerhof (HSE06). We show that HSE06-computed lattice parameters, octahedral tilts and rotations, as well as electronic properties, are significantly improved over semilocal functionals. We predict the crystal field splitting ($Δ_{CF}$) resulting from the structural phase transition in SrTiO$_{3}$ and LaAlO$_{3}$ to be 3 meV and 10 meV, respectively, in excellent agreement with experimental r…
We report on a study of charge transport in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with carrier density tuned across several orders of magnitude. Comparing this system with other quasi-cubic perovskites, in particular strontium titanate, we draw a comprehensive picture of metal-insulator transition and dilute metallicity in this $AB$O$_3$ family. Because of a lower electric permittivity, the metal-insulator transition in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ occurs at higher carrier densities compared to SrTiO$_3$. At low temperature, a distinct $T^2$ resistivity is visible. Its prefactor $A$ smoothly decreases with increasin…
A quasi-one dimensional magnetism was discovered in the post-perovskite CaRuO3 (Ru4+: 4d4, Cmcm), which is iso-compositional with the perovskite CaRuO3 (Pbnm). An antiferromagnetic spin-chain function with -J/kB = 350 K well reproduces the experimental curve of the magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature, suggesting long-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The anisotropic magnetism is probably owing to the dyz - 2p- dzx and dzx - 2p- dyz superexchange bonds along a-axis. The Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat is fairly small, 0.16(2) mJ mol-1 K-2, indicating that the magnetism refle…
The recent discovery nickel oxides superconductors have highlighted the importance of first-principles simulations for understanding the formation of the bound electrons at the core of superconductivity. Nevertheless, superconductivity in oxides is often ascribed to strong electronic correlation effects that Density Functional Theory (DFT) cannot properly take into account, thereby disqualifying this technique. Being isostructural to nickel oxides, Sr1-xKxBiO3 superconductors form an ideal testbed for unveiling (i) the lowest theory level needed to model complex superconductors and (ii) the un…
We report the direct observation of the electric pulse induced resistance-change (EPIR) effect at the nano scale on La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSMO) thin films by the current measurement AFM technique. After a switching voltage of one polarity is applied across the sample by the AFM tip, the conductivity in a local nanometer region around the AFM tip is increased, and after a switching voltage of the opposite polarity is applied, the local conductivity is reduced. This reversible resistance switching effect is observed under both continuous and short pulse voltage switching conditions. It is important for …
A novel approach for finding new transparent conductors involves taking advantage of electronic correlations in metallic transition metal oxides, such as SrVO$_3$, to enhance the electronic effective mass and suppress the plasma frequency ($ω_P$) to infrared. Success of this approach relies on finding a compound with the right electron effective mass and quasiparticle weight $Z$. Biaxial strain can in principle be a fruitful way to manipulate the electronic properties of materials to tune both of these quantities. In this study, we elucidate the behavior of the electronic properties of early t…
Interplay of Fermi surface topology and electron correlation is the quintessential ingredient underlying spontaneous symmetry breaking in itinerant electronic systems. In one-dimensional (1D) systems at half-filling, the inherent Fermi surface nesting makes the translationally invariant metallic state unstable, which is known as Peierls instability. Extending the scope of Peierls instability to two (2D) or three dimensions (3D), however, is not straightforward, since the Fermi surface in higher dimensions is generally not nested. In this work, we show that a perfectly nested Fermi surface can …
Synchrotron X-ray diffraction patterns were measured and analyzed for a polycrystalline sample of the room-temperature ferromagnet Sr3.12Er0.88Co4O10.5 from 300 to 650 K, from which two structural phase transitions were found to occur successively. The higher-temperature transition at 509 K is driven by ordering of the oxygen vacancies, which is closely related to the metallic state at high temperatures. The lower-temperature transition at 360 K is of first order, at which the ferromagnetic state suddenly appears with exhibiting a jump in magnetization and resistivity. Based on the refined str…
In this paper, we report the electrical and structural properties of the oxide-based metal/ferroelectric/metal (MFM) junctions. The heterostructures are composed of ultrathin layers of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) as a metallic layer and, BaTiO3 (BTO) as a ferroelectric layer. Junction based devices, having the dimensions of 400 x 200 micom2, have been fabricated upon LCMO/BTO/LCMO heterostructures by photolithography and Ar-ion milling technique. The DC current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the MFM junctions were carried out. At 300 K, the devices showed the linear (I-V) characteristics, whereas …
We have measured high-field magnetization and magnetoresistance of polycrystalline samples of the A-site ordered perovskite CaCu3Ti4-xRuxO12 (x=0 - 4) utilizing a non-destructive pulsed magnet. We find that the magnetization for x=0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 is nonlinear, and tends to saturate in high fields. This is highly nontrivial because the magnetization for x=0 and 4 is linear in external field up to the highest one. We have analyzed this field dependence based on the thermodynamics of magnetic materials, and propose that the external fields delocalize the holes on the Cu2+ ions in order to maximi…
Nowadays it has become feasible to perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of transition-metal oxides with three-dimensional perovskite structures owing to the availability of high-quality single crystals of bulk and epitaxial thin films. In this article, we review recent experimental results and interpretation of ARPES data using empirical tight-binding band-structure calculations. Results are presented for SrVO$_3$ (SVO) bulk single crystals, and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ (LSFO) and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. In the case of SVO, from comparison of…
Advances in synthesis techniques and materials understanding have given rise to oxide heterostructures with intriguing physical phenomena that cannot be found in their constituents. In these structures, precise control of interface quality, including oxygen stoichiometry, is critical for unambiguous tailoring of the interfacial properties, with deposition of the first monolayer being the most important step in shaping a well-defined functional interface. Here, we studied interface formation and strain evolution during the initial growth of LaAlO3 on SrTiO3 by pulsed laser deposition, in search…
This a review article, which presents a general framework for the analysis of interatomic magnetic interactions in the spin-density-functional theory, which is based on the magnetic force theorem, make a link with the models for transition-metal oxides, and gives several examples of how this strategy can be used for the analysis of magnetic properties of colossal-magnetoresistive perovskite manganites, double perovskite and pyrochlore compounds.
Much of the current experimental efforts for detecting Majorana zero modes have been centered on probing the boundary of quantum wires with strong spin-orbit coupling. The same type of Majorana zero mode can also be realized at crystalline dislocations in 2D superconductors with the nontrivial weak topological indices. Unlike at an Abrikosov vortex, at such a dislocation, there are no other low-lying midgap states than the Majorana zero mode so that it avoids usual complications encountered in experimental detections such as scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements. We will show that, …

Interaction-driven metal-insulator transitions or Mott transitions are widely observed in condensed-matter systems. In multi-orbital systems, many-body physics is richer in which an orbital-selective metal-insulator transition is an intriguing and unique phenomenon. Here we use first-principles calculations to show that a magnetic transition (from paramagnetic to long-range magnetically ordered) can simultaneously induce an orbital-selective insulator-metal transition in rock-salt ordered double perovskite oxides $A_2BB'$O$_6$ where $B$ is a non-magnetic ion (Y$^{3+}$ and Sc$^{3+}$) and $B'$ a…
A new model of a symmetric two-terminal non-volatile RRAM device based on Perovskite oxide thin film materials, specifically Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (PCMO), is proposed and analyzed. The model consists of two identical half-parts, which are completely characterized by the same resistance verses pulse voltage hysteresis loop, connected together in series. Even though the modeled device is physically symmetric with respect to the direction of current, it is found to exhibit switching of the resistance with the application of voltage pulses of sufficient amplitude and of different polarities. The apparent b…
