Household garbage images are usually faced with complex backgrounds, variable illuminations, diverse angles, and changeable shapes, which bring a great difficulty in garbage image classification. Due to the ability to discover problem-specific features, deep learning and especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully and widely used for image representation learning. However, available and stable household garbage datasets are insufficient, which seriously limits the development of research and application. Besides, the state of the art in the field of garbage image cla…

This work observed the problem of fingerprint image recognition in the case of missing pixels from the original image. The possibility of missing pixels recovery is tested by applying the Compressive Sensing approach. Namely, different percentage of missing pixels is observed and the image reconstruction is done by applying commonly used approach for sparse image reconstruction. The theory is verified by experiments, showing successful image reconstruction and later person identification even if less then 90% of the image pixels is missing.

An essential factor to achieve high performance in face recognition systems is the quality of its samples. Since these systems are involved in daily life there is a strong need of making face recognition processes understandable for humans. In this work, we introduce the concept of pixel-level face image quality that determines the utility of pixels in a face image for recognition. We propose a training-free approach to assess the pixel-level qualities of a face image given an arbitrary face recognition network. To achieve this, a model-specific quality value of the input image is estimated an…
The variation of pose, illumination and expression makes face recognition still a challenging problem. As a pre-processing in holistic approaches, faces are usually aligned by eyes. The proposed method tries to perform a pixel alignment rather than eye-alignment by mapping the geometry of faces to a reference face while keeping their own textures. The proposed geometry alignment not only creates a meaningful correspondence among every pixel of all faces, but also removes expression and pose variations effectively. The geometry alignment is performed pixel-wise, i.e., every pixel of the face is…
Shape recognition is the main challenging problem in computer vision. Different approaches and tools are used to solve this problem. Most existing approaches to object recognition are based on pixels. Pixel-based methods are dependent on the geometry and nature of the pixels, so the destruction of pixels reduces their performance. In this paper, we study the ability of graphs as shape recognition. We construct a graph that captures the topological and geometrical properties of the object. Then, using the coordinate and relation of its vertices, we extract features that are robust to noise, rot…

Recent developments in deep domain adaptation have allowed knowledge transfer from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain at the level of intermediate features or input pixels. We propose that advantages may be derived by combining them, in the form of different insights that lead to a novel design and complementary properties that result in better performance. At the feature level, inspired by insights from semi-supervised learning, we propose a classification-aware domain adversarial neural network that brings target examples into more classifiable regions of source domain. Human visual recognition of activities or external agents involves an interplay between high-level plan recognition and low-level perception. Given that, a natural question to ask is: can low-level perception be improved by high-level plan recognition? We formulate the problem of leveraging recognized plans to generate better top-down attention maps \cite{gazzaniga2009,baluch2011} to improve the perception performance. We call these top-down attention maps specifically as plan-recognition-driven attention maps. To address this problem, we introduce the Pixel Dynamics Network. Pixel Dynamics Ne…
Deep learning-based palmprint recognition algorithms have shown great potential. Most of them are mainly focused on identifying samples from the same dataset. However, they may be not suitable for a more convenient case that the images for training and test are from different datasets, such as collected by embedded terminals and smartphones. Therefore, we propose a novel Joint Pixel and Feature Alignment (JPFA) framework for such cross-dataset palmprint recognition scenarios. Two stage-alignment is applied to obtain adaptive features in source and target datasets. 1) Deep style transfer model …
In this paper we present a technique for fusion of optical and thermal face images based on image pixel fusion approach. Out of several factors, which affect face recognition performance in case of visual images, illumination changes are a significant factor that needs to be addressed. Thermal images are better in handling illumination conditions but not very consistent in capturing texture details of the faces. Other factors like sunglasses, beard, moustache etc also play active role in adding complicacies to the recognition process. Fusion of thermal and visual images is a solution to overco…
Deep learning models have shown their vulnerability when dealing with adversarial attacks. Existing attacks almost perform on low-level instances, such as pixels and super-pixels, and rarely exploit semantic clues. For face recognition attacks, existing methods typically generate the l_p-norm perturbations on pixels, however, resulting in low attack transferability and high vulnerability to denoising defense models. In this work, instead of performing perturbations on the low-level pixels, we propose to generate attacks through perturbing on the high-level semantics to improve attack transfera…

This research starts with the observation that face recognition can suffer a low impact from significant image shrinkage. To explain this fact, we proposed the Pixel Clustering methodology. It defines regions in the image in which its pixels are very similar to each other. We extract features from each region. We used three face databases in the experiments. We noticed that 512 is the maximum number of features needed for high accuracy image recognition. The proposed method is also robust, even if only it uses a few classes from the training set.

In this research, we present a heuristic method for character recognition. For this purpose, a sketch is constructed from the image that contains the character to be recognized. This sketch contains the most important pixels of image that are representatives of original image. These points are the most probable points in pixel-by-pixel matching of image that adapt to target image. Furthermore, a technique called gravity shifting is utilized for taking over the problem of elongation of characters. The consequence of combining sketch and gravity techniques leaded to a language free character rec…

An optical diffractive neural network (DNN) can be implemented with a cascaded phase mask architecture. Like an optical computer, the system can perform machine learning tasks such as number digit recognition in an all-optical manner. However, the system can only work under coherent light illumination and the precision requirement in practical experiments is quite high. This paper proposes an optical machine learning framework based on single-pixel imaging (MLSPI). The MLSPI system can perform the same linear pattern recognition task as DNN. Furthermore, it can work under incoherent lighting c…
Face recognition is one of the most active tasks in computer vision and has been widely used in the real world. With great advances made in convolutional neural networks (CNN), lots of face recognition algorithms have achieved high accuracy on various face datasets. However, existing face recognition algorithms based on CNNs are vulnerable to noise. Noise corrupted image patterns could lead to false activations, significantly decreasing face recognition accuracy in noisy situations. To equip CNNs with built-in robustness to noise of different levels, we proposed a Median Pixel Difference Convo…

In this paper, a novel signature of human action recognition, namely the curvature of a video sequence, is introduced. In this way, the distribution of sequential data is modeled, which enables few-shot learning. Instead of depending on recognizing features within images, our algorithm views actions as sequences on the universal time scale across a whole sequence of images. The video sequence, viewed as a curve in pixel space, is aligned by reparameterization using the arclength of the curve in pixel space. Once such curvatures are obtained, statistical indexes are extracted and fed into a lea…

However, the automatic recognition of facial expressions using image template matching techniques suffer from the natural variability with facial features and recording conditions. In spite of the progress achieved in facial emotion recognition in recent years, the effective and computationally simple feature selection and classification technique for emotion recognition is still an open problem. In this paper, we propose an efficient and stra…

Recently regression analysis becomes a popular tool for face recognition. The existing regression methods all use the one-dimensional pixel-based error model, which characterizes the representation error pixel by pixel individually and thus neglects the whole structure of the error image. We observe that occlusion and illumination changes generally lead to a low-rank error image. To make use of this low-rank structural information, this paper presents a two-dimensional image matrix based error model, i.e. matrix regression, for face representation and classification. Our model uses the minimal…
Few-shot learning is devoted to training a model on few samples. Most of these approaches learn a model based on a pixel-level or global-level feature representation. However, using global features may lose local information, and using pixel-level features may lose the contextual semantics of the image. Moreover, such works can only measure the relations between them on a single level, which is not comprehensive and effective. And if query images can simultaneously be well classified via three distinct level similarity metrics, the query images within a class can be more tightly distributed in…
Any subset of the plane can be approximated by a set of square pixels. This transition from a shape to its pixelation is rather brutal since it destroys geometric and topological information about the shape. Using a technique inspired by Morse Theory, we algorithmically produce a PL approximation of the original shape using only information from its pixelation. This approximation converges to the original shape in a very strong sense: as the size of the pixels goes to zero we can recover important geometric and topological invariants of the original shape such as Betti numbers, area, perimeter…
This paper presents a novel automatic face recognition approach based on local binary patterns. This descriptor considers a local neighbourhood of a pixel to compute the feature vector values. This method is not very robust to handle image noise, variances and different illumination conditions. We address these issues by proposing a novel descriptor which considers more pixels and different neighbourhoods to compute the feature vector values. The proposed method is evaluated on two benchmark corpora, namely UFI and FERET face datasets. We experimentally show that our approach outperforms state…

In this work, we aim to address the challenging task of open set recognition (OSR). Many recent OSR methods rely on auto-encoders to extract class-specific features by a reconstruction strategy, requiring the network to restore the input image on pixel-level. This strategy is commonly over-demanding for OSR since class-specific features are generally contained in target objects, not in all pixels. To address this shortcoming, here we discard the pixel-level reconstruction strategy and pay more attention to improving the effectiveness of class-specific feature extraction. We propose a mutual in…

Our proposed method, Multi-Branch with Attention Network (MBA-Net), incorporates both channel and spatial attention modules in branches in addition to a global (without attention) branch to capture global structural information for discriminative feature learning. The attention modules focus on the relevant features of the hand image while suppressing the irrelevant backgrou…

People identification in video based on the way they walk (i.e. gait) is a relevant task in computer vision using a non-invasive approach. Standard and current approaches typically derive gait signatures from sequences of binary energy maps of subjects extracted from images, but this process introduces a large amount of non-stationary noise, thus, conditioning their efficacy. In contrast, in this paper we focus on the raw pixels, or simple functions derived from them, letting advanced learning techniques to extract relevant features. We present SNIPER, an algorithm for performing efficient multi-scale training in instance level visual recognition tasks. Instead of processing every pixel in an image pyramid, SNIPER processes context regions around ground-truth instances (referred to as chips) at the appropriate scale. For background sampling, these context-regions are generated using proposals extracted from a region proposal network trained with a short learning schedule. Hence, the number of chips generated per image during training adaptively changes based on the scene complexity. SNIPER only processes 30% more pixels co…
This report concerns the use of techniques for sparse signal representation and sparse error correction for automatic face recognition. Much of the recent interest in these techniques comes from the paper "Robust Face Recognition via Sparse Representation" by Wright et al. (2009), which showed how, under certain technical conditions, one could cast the face recognition problem as one of seeking a sparse representation of a given input face image in terms of a "dictionary" of training images and images of individual pixels. In this report, we have attempted to clarify some frequently encountere…
High-quality 3D object recognition is an important component of many vision and robotics systems. We tackle the object recognition problem using two data representations, to achieve leading results on the Princeton ModelNet challenge. The two representations: 1. Volumetric representation: the 3D object is discretized spatially as binary voxels - $1$ if the voxel is occupied and $0$ otherwise. 2. Pixel representation: the 3D object is represented as a set of projected 2D pixel images. Current leading submissions to the ModelNet Challenge use Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) on pixel represe…

We devise deep nearest centroids (DNC), a conceptually elegant yet surprisingly effective network for large-scale visual recognition, by revisiting Nearest Centroids, one of the most classic and simple classifiers. Current deep models learn the classifier in a fully parametric manner, ignoring the latent data structure and lacking simplicity and explainability. DNC instead conducts nonparametric, case-based reasoning; it utilizes sub-centroids of training samples to describe class distributions and clearly explains the classification as the proximity of test data and the class sub-centroids in…
Event cameras continue to attract interest due to desirable characteristics such as high dynamic range, low latency, virtually no motion blur, and high energy efficiency. One of the potential applications that would benefit from these characteristics lies in visual place recognition for robot localization, i.e. matching a query observation to the corresponding reference place in the database. In this letter, we explore the distinctiveness of event streams from a small subset of pixels (in the tens or hundreds). We demonstrate that the absolute difference in the number of events at those pixel …

Beneath the uncertain primitive visual features of face images are the primitive intrinsic structural patterns (PISP) essential for characterizing a sample face discriminative attributes. It is on this basis that this paper presents a simple yet effective facial descriptor formed from derivatives of Gaussian and Gabor Wavelets. LEGGM first uncovers the PISP locked in every pixel through determining the pixel gradient in relation to its neighbors using the Derivatives of Gaussians. Then, the resulting output is em…

Object detection and segmentation represents the basis for many tasks in computer and machine vision. In biometric recognition systems the detection of the region-of-interest (ROI) is one of the most crucial steps in the overall processing pipeline, significantly impacting the performance of the entire recognition system. Existing approaches to ear detection, for example, are commonly susceptible to the presence of severe occlusions, ear accessories or variable illumination conditions and often deteriorate in their performance if applied on ear images captured in unconstrained settings.
