In recent years, kagome materials have attracted significant attention due to their rich emergent phenomena arising from the quantum interplay of geometry, topology, spin, and correlations. However, in the search for kagome materials, it has been found that bulk compounds with electronic properties related to the kagome lattice are relatively scarce, primarily due to the hybridization of kagome layers with adjacent layers. Therefore, researchers have shown increasing interest in the discovery and construction of two-dimensional (2D) kagome materials, aiming to achieve clean kagome bands near the Fermi level in monolayer or few-layer systems. Substantial advancements have already been made in this area. In this review, we summarize the current progress in the construction and development of 2D kagome materials. We begin by introducing the geometric and electronic structures of the kagome lattice model and its variants, followed by discussions on the experimental realizations and electronic structure characterizations of 2D kagome materials. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future developments of 2D kagome materials.
The energy dispersion of fermions or bosons vanishes in momentum space if destructive quantum interference occurs in a frustrated Kagome lattice with only nearest-neighbour (NN) hopping. A discrete flat band (FB) without any dispersion is consequently formed, promising emergence of fractional quantum Hall states (FQHS) at high temperatures. Here, we report experimental realization of a FB with possible nontrivial topology in an electronic Kagome lattice on a twisted multilayer silicene. The electrons are localized in the Kagome lattice due to quantum destructive interference, and thus, their k…
We investigate the connection between highly frustrated kagome based Hamiltonians and a recently synthesized family of materials containing Ti3+ S=1/2 ions. Employing a combination of all electron density functional theory and numerical diagonalization techniques, we establish the Heisenberg Hamiltonians for the distorted kagome antiferromagnets Rb2NaTi3F12, Cs2NaTi3F12 and Cs2KTi3F12. We determine magnetization curves in excellent agreement with experimental observations. Our calculations successfully clarify the relationship between the experimental observations and the magnetization-plateau…
Electronic properties of kagome lattice have drawn great attention recently. In associate with flat-band induced by destructive interference and Dirac cone-type dispersion, abundant exotic phenomena have been theoretically discussed. The material realization of electronic kagome lattice is a crucial step towards comprehending kagome physics and achieving novel quantum phases. Here, combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, transport measurements and first-principle calculations, we expose a planar flat-band in paramagnetic YCr6Ge6 as a typical signature of electronic kagome lattice.…
Recently there has been intense interest in Kagome metals, which are expected to host flat bands (FBs). However, the observed FBs are non-ideal as they are not flat over the whole 2D Brillouin zone and overlap strongly with other bands. Most critically, the theoretical conditions for the existence of ideal FB in Kagome metals, beyond the simplest Kagome lattice model, are unknown. Here, based on tight-binding model analyses of the interplay between d-orbital symmetry and underlying Kagome lattice symmetry, we establish such conditions. We show that for a pure transition-metal (TM) Kagome latti…
A Kagome lattice, formed by triangles of two different directions, is known to have many emergent quantum phenomena. Under the breathing anisotropy of bond strengths, this lattice can become a higher-order topological insulator (HOTI), which hosts topologically protected corner states. Experimental realizations of HOTI on breathing Kagome lattices have been reported for various artificial systems, but not for simple natural materials with an electronic breathing Kagome lattice. Here we prove that a breathing Kagome lattice and HOTI are hidden inside the electronic structure of hexagonal transi…
Two-dimensional (2D) Dirac bands and flat bands are characteristics of a kagome lattice. However, experimental studies on their electrical transport are few, because three-dimensional (3D) bulk bands of kagome materials, consisting of stacked 2D kagome layers, dominate the transport. We report a magnetoresistance (MR) study of a kagome material, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. Based on analysis of the temperature, magnetic field, and field angle dependence of the resistivity, we obtain a complete anatomy of MR. Besides a magnon MR, a chirality-dependent MR, and a chiral-anomaly-induced MR, the most intrigu…
Magnetic topological semimetals are the manifestations of interplay between electronic and magnetic phases of the matter, leading to peculiar characteristics such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and topological Hall effect (THE). Mn$_3$Sn is a time-reversal symmetry broken (TRS) magnetic Weyl semimetal showing topological characteristics within the Kagome lattice network. In this study, for the first time, we uncover large and pure topological Hall effect in Mn$_3$Sn at the room temperature, which is gradually suppressed by Fe doping at the Mn site of Mn$_{3-x}$Fe$_x$Sn. We further identify…
Spin ices are exotic phases of matter characterized by frustrated spins obeying local ice rules, in analogy with the electric dipoles in water ice. In two dimensions, one can similarly define ice rules for in-plane Ising-like spins arranged on a kagome lattice. These ice rules require each triangle plaquette to have a single monopole, and can lead to various unique orders and excitations. Using experimental and theoretical approaches including magnetometry, thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we establish HoAgGe as a crystalline (i.e. non-artificial) sys…
Quantum materials with tunable correlated and/or topological electronic states, such as the electronic Kagome lattice, provide an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum properties. However, the real-space investigations on the correlated electronic Kagome lattice have been rarely reported. Herein, we report on the electronic Kagome lattice emerging in the correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) state of 1T-TaS$_2$ at ~200 K via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). This emergent Kagome lattice can be considered a fractional electron-filling superstructure with reduced t…
Interplay of magnetism and electronic band topology in unconventional magnets enables the creation and fine control of novel electronic phenomena. In this work, we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study thin films of a prototypical kagome magnet Fe3Sn2. Our experiments reveal an unusually large number of densely-spaced spectroscopic features straddling the Fermi level. These are consistent with signatures of low-energy Weyl fermions and associated topological Fermi arc surface states predicted by theory. By measuring their response as a function of magnetic field, we disco…

Kagome materials have become solid grounds to study the interplay among geometry, topology, correlation, and magnetism. Recently, semiconductors Nb3X8(X = Cl, Br, I) have been predicted to be two-dimensional (2D) magnets and importantly these materials possess breathing kagome geometry. Electronic structure study of these promising materials is still lacking. Here, we report the spectroscopic evidence of at and weakly dispersing bands in breathing-kagome semiconductor Nb3I8 around 500 meV binding energy, which is well supported by our first-principles calculations. These bands originate from t…

In a kagome lattice, the time reversal symmetry can be broken by a staggered magnetic flux emerging from ferromagnetic ordering and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, leading to several wellseparated nontrivial Chern bands and intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on this idea and ab initio calculations, we propose the realization of the intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single layer Cs2Mn3F12 kagome lattice and on the (001) surface of a Cs2LiMn3F12 single crystal by modifying the carrier coverage on it, where the band gap is around 20 meV. Moreover, a simplified tight bindin…
We investigate the real-space profile of effective Coulomb interactions in correlated kagome materials. By particularizing to KV$_3$Sb$_5$, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, FeSn, and Ni$_3$In, we analyze representative cases that exhibit a large span of correlation-mediated phenomena, and contrast them to prototypical prevoskite transition metal oxides. From our constrained random phase approximation studies we find that the on-site interaction strength in kagome metals not only depends on the screening processes at high energy, but also on the low-energy hybriziation profile of the electronic density of st…
We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of the kagome mineral averievite (CsCl)Cu$_5$V$_2$O$_{10}$ and its phosphate analog (CsCl)Cu$_5$P$_2$O$_{10}$ using first-principles calculations. The crystal structure of these compounds features Cu$^{2+}$ kagome layers sandwiched between Cu$^{2+}$-P$^{5+}$/Cu$^{2+}$-V$^{5+}$ honeycomb planes, with pyrochlore slabs made of corner-sharing Cu-tetrahedra being formed. The induced chemical pressure effect upon substitution of V by P causes significant changes in the structure and magnetic properties. Even though the in-plane antiferromagnetic …
Kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, and Cs) exhibit intriguing superconductivity below $0.9 \sim 2.5 $ K, a charge density wave (CDW) transition around $80\sim 100 $ K, and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological surface states. The nature of the CDW phase and its relation to superconductivity remains elusive. In this work, we investigate the electronic and structural properties of CDW by first-principles calculations. We reveal an inverse Star of David deformation as the $2\times2\times2$ CDW ground state of the kagome lattice. The kagome lattice shows softening breathing-phonon modes, indicating …
The kagome-lattice crystal hosts various intriguing properties including the frustrated magnetism, charge order, topological state, superconductivity and correlated phenomena. To achieve high-performance kagome-lattice compounds for electronic and spintronic applications, careful tuning of the band structure would be desired. Here, the electronic structures of kagome-lattice crystal Ni3In2S2 were investigated by transport measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as well as ab initio calculations. The transport measurements reveal Ni3In2S2 as a compensated semimetal with record-h…
Kagome metals are as an exciting playground for the explorations of novel phenomena at the intersection of topology, electron correlations and magnetism. The family of FeSn-based kagome magnets in particular attracted a lot of attention for simplicity of the layered crystal structure and tunable topological electronic band structure. Despite a significant progress in understanding their bulk properties, surface electronic and magnetic structures are yet to be fully explored in many of these systems. In this work, we focus on a prototypical kagome metal FeSn. Using a combination of spin-average…
Strongly correlated Kagome magnets are promising candidates for achieving controllable topological devices owing to the rich interplay between inherent Dirac fermions and correlation-driven magnetism. Here we report tunable local magnetism and its intriguing control of topological electronic response near room temperature in the Kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 using small angle neutron scattering, muon spin rotation, and magnetoresistivity measurement techniques. The average bulk spin direction and magnetic domain texture can be tuned effectively by small magnetic fields. Magnetoresistivity, in response,…
Layered kagome-lattice materials with 3$d$ transition metals provide a fertile playground for studies on geometry frustration, band topology and other novel ordered states. A representative class of materials AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) have been proved to possess various unconventional phases such as superconductivity, non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ band topology, and electronic nematicity, which are intertwined with multiple interlaced charge density waves (CDW). However, the interplay among these novel states and their mechanisms are still elusive. Recently, the discovery of isostructural titani…
Spin and charge are two interrelated properties of electrons. However, most of previous works on topological matter study the electronic and magnonic excitations separately. In this paper, by combining density functional theory calculations with the Schwinger boson method, we determine the topological electronic band structures and topological magnon spectrum simultaneously in the ferromagnetic ground state of the narrow-band-gap CoCu3(OH)6Cl2, which is an ABC stacking Kagome lattice material with fractional occupancy on Cu sites. This material provides an ideal platform to study the interplay…
The kagome lattice is a two-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles known as a platform for exotic quantum magnetic states. Theoretical work has predicted that the kagome lattice may also host Dirac electronic states that could lead to topological and Chern insulating phases, but these have evaded experimental detection to date. Here we study the d-electron kagome metal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ designed to support bulk massive Dirac fermions in the presence of ferromagnetic order. We observe a temperature independent intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity persisting above room temperature suggestiv…
LaRh$_3$B$_2$ crystallizes in a layered structure where Rh atoms form a perfect Kagome lattice. The material shows superconductivity at $T_c \approx 2.6$~K\@ and no signature for density wave instabilities. We report our measurements of electronic transport, magnetization, and heat capacity in the normal and superconducting state, and derive normal and superconducting parameters. From first principles calculations of the electronic band structure, we identify all features of Kagome bands predominantly formed by the Rh $d$ orbitals: a flat band, Dirac cones, and van Hove singularities. The calc…

The kagome lattice, consisting of interconnected triangles and hexagons uniquely, is an excellent model system for study frustrated magnetism, electronic correlation and topological electronic structure. After an intensive investigation on frustrated magnetism in insulating magnetic kagome lattices, the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom via spin-orbital coupling in metallic systems (kagome metals) has become an attractive topic recently. Here, we study centrosymmetric YMn6Sn6 with Mn kagome lattice. We discover that it exhibits giant topological Hall effect near room tempera…
Kagome superconductors with Tc up to 7K have been discovered over 40 years. Recently, unconventional chiral charge order has been reported in kagome superconductor KV3Sb5, with an ordering temperature of one order of magnitude higher than the TC. However, the chirality of the charge order has not been reported in the cousin kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5, and the electronic nature of the chirality remains elusive. In this letter, we report the observation of electronic chiral charge order in CsV3Sb5 via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We observe a 2x2 charge modulation and a 1x4 superlatti…
Quantum materials, particularly Dirac materials with linearly dispersing bands, can be effectively tuned by strain-induced lattice distortions leading to a pseudo-magnetic field that strongly modulates their electronic properties. Here, we grow kagome magnet FeSn films, consisting of alternatingly stacked Sn$_2$ honeycomb (stanene) and Fe$_3$Sn kagome layers, on SrTiO$_3$(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we show that the Sn honeycomb layer can be periodically deformed by epitaxial strain for film thickness below 10 nm, resulting in di…
Topological semimetals are a frontier of quantum materials. In multi-band electronic systems, topological band-crossings can form closed curves, known as nodal lines. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling and/or symmetry-breaking operations, topological nodal lines can break into Dirac/Weyl nodes and give rise to novel transport properties, such as the chiral anomaly and giant anomalous Hall effect. Recently the time-reversal symmetry-breaking induced Weyl fermions are observed in a kagome-metal Co3Sn2S2, triggering interests in nodal-line excitations in multiband kagome systems. Here, using …
