Efficient control schemes that enable fast, high-fidelity operations are essential for any practical quantum computation. However, current optimization protocols are intractable due to stringent requirements imposed by the microscopic systems encoding the qubit, including dense energy level spectra and cross talk, and generally require a trade-off between speed and fidelity of the operation. Here, we address these challenges by developing a general framework for optimal control based on the quantum metric tensor. This framework allows for fast and high-fidelity adiabatic pulses, even for a dense energy spectrum, based solely on the Hamiltonian of the system instead of the full time evolution propagator and independent of the size of the underlying Hilbert space. Furthermore, the framework suppresses diabatic transitions and state-dependent crosstalk effects without the need for additional control fields. As an example, we study the adiabatic charge transfer in a double quantum dot to find optimal control pulses with improved performance. We show that for the geometric protocol, the transfer fidelites are lower bounded $F>99\%$ for ultrafast 20 ns pulses, regardless of the size of the anti-crossing.

We present a couple of protocols based on shortcut to adiabaticity techniques for rapid generation of robust entangled Bell states in a system of two two-state systems. Our protocols rely on the so-called transitionless quantum driving (TQD) algorithm and Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant (LRI) method. Both TQD and LRI methods result in high fidelity in population transfer. Our study shows that it is possible to prepare an entangled state in infinitely short time without losing robustness and efficiency.
Long-distance transfer of quantum states is an indispensable part of large-scale quantum information processing. We propose a novel scheme for the transfer of two-electron entangled states, from one edge of a quantum dot array to the other by coherent adiabatic passage. This protocol is mediated by pulsed tunneling barriers. In a second step, we seek for a speed up by shortcut to adiabaticity techniques. This significantly reduces the operation time and, thus, minimizes the impact of decoherence. For typical parameters of state-of-the-art solid state devices, the accelerated protocol has an op…
We develop new pulse schemes to significantly speed up adiabatic state transfer protocols. Our general strategy involves adding corrections to an initial control Hamiltonian which harness non-adiabatic transitions. These corrections define a set of dressed states that the system follows exactly during the state transfer. We apply this approach to STIRAP protocols and show that a suitable choice of dressed states allows one to design fast protocols that do not require additional couplings, while simultaneously minimizing the occupancy of the "intermediate" level.
Based on a `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' (STA) scheme, we theoretically design and experimentally realize a set of high-fidelity single-qubit quantum gates in a superconducting Xmon qubit system. Through a precise microwave control, the qubit is driven to follow a fast `adiabatic' trajectory with the assistance of a counter-diabatic field and the correction of derivative removal by adiabatic gates. The experimental measurements of quantum process tomography and interleaved randomized benchmarking show that the process fidelities of our STA quantum gates are higher than 94.9% and the gate fideliti…
We present a method for accelerating adiabatic protocols for systems involving a coupling to a continuum, one that cancels both non-adiabatic errors as well as errors due to dissipation. We focus on applications to a generic quantum state transfer problem, where the goal is to transfer a state between a single level or mode, and a propagating temporal mode in a waveguide or transmission line. Our approach enables perfect adiabatic transfer protocols in this setup, despite a finite protocol speed and a finite waveguide coupling. Our approach even works in highly constrained settings, where ther…
In previous implementations of adiabatic quantum algorithms using spin systems, the average Hamiltonian method with Trotter's formula was conventionally adopted to generate an effective instantaneous Hamiltonian that simulates an adiabatic passage. However, this approach had issues with the precision of the effective Hamiltonian and with the adiabaticity of the evolution. In order to address these, we here propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme for adiabatic quantum computation by using the intrinsic Hamiltonian of a realistic spin system to represent the problem Hamiltonian whi…
The high-speed implementation and robustness against of non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation provide a new idea for overcoming the difficulty of quantum system interacting with the environment easily decoherence, which realizing large-scale quantum computer construction. Here, we show that a high-fidelity quantum gates to implement non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation under solid-state spin in Nitrogen-Vacancy(NV) centers, providing an extensible experimental platform that has the potential for room-temperature quantum computing, which has increased attention recent years. Compar…
We introduce an adiabatic transfer protocol for spin states in large quantum dot arrays that is based on time-dependent modulation of the Heisenberg exchange interaction in the presence of a magnetic field gradient. We refer to this protocol as spin-CTAP (coherent transport by adiabatic passage) in analogy to a related protocol developed for charge state transfer in quantum dot arrays. The insensitivity of this adiabatic protocol to pulse imperfections has potential advantages for reading out extended spin qubit arrays. When the static exchange interaction varies across the array, a quantum-co…
A biexciton in a semiconductor quantum dot is a source of polarization-entangled photons with high potential for implementation in scalable systems. Several approaches for non-resonant, resonant and quasi-resonant biexciton preparation exist, but all have their own disadvantages, for instance low fidelity, timing jitter, incoherence or sensitivity to experimental parameters. We demonstrate a coherent and robust technique to generate a biexciton in an InGaAs quantum dot with a fidelity close to one. The main concept is the application of rapid adiabatic passage to the ground state-exciton-biexc…
We introduce a method to speed up adiabatic protocols for creating entanglement between two qubits dispersively coupled to a transmission line, while keeping fidelities high and maintaining robustness to control errors. The method takes genuinely adiabatic sweeps, ranging from a simple Landau-Zener drive to boundary cancellation methods and local adiabatic drivings, and adds fast oscillations to speed up the protocol while canceling unwanted transitions. We compare our protocol with existing adiabatic methods in a state-of-the-art parameter range and show substantial gains. Numerical simulatio…
Shortcuts to adiabaticity have been proposed to speed up the "slow" adiabatic transport of an atom or a wave packet of atoms. However, the freedom of the inverse engineering approach with appropriate boundary conditions provides thousands of trap trajectories for different purposes, for example, time and energy minimizations. In this paper, we propose trigonometric protocols for fast and robust atomic transport, taking into account cubic or quartic anharmonicities. The numerical results have illustrated that such trigonometric protocols, particular cosine ansatz, is more robust and the corresp…
We propose a method to design pulses in a resonant three-level system to enhance the robustness of non-adiabatic geometric gate operations. By optimizing the shape of the pulse envelope, we show that the gate operations are more robust against frequency detuning than they are with Gaussian and square pulses. Our method provides a way to design pulses that can be employed in a system where robustness against frequency variations or inhomogeneous broadening is required, and may be extended to ensure robustness against other physical imperfections such as intensity fluctuations and random noises.
Long-distance fast and precise transfer of charge in semiconductor nanostructures is one of the goals for scalable electronic devices. We study theoretically the control of shuttling of an electron along a linear chain of semiconductor electrostatically-defined quantum dots by an electric field pulse with nonlinear time-dependent profile. We show that this essential nonlinearity along with shortcuts to adiabaticity techniques speed up the electron transfer with high fidelity, while still holding great robustness under spin-flip interactions and inhomogeneities in the couplings of the chain. A …
We study the detection of electrons undergoing coherent transfer via adiabatic passage (CTAP) in a triple quantum-dot system with a quantum point-contact sensing the change of the middle dot. In the ideal scenario, the protocol amounts to perfect change transfer between the external dots with vanishing occupation of the central dot at all times, rendering the measurement and its backaction moot. Nevertheless, even with minor corrections to the protocol, a small population builds up in the central dot. We study the measurement backaction by a Bayesian formalism simulation of an instantaneous de…
We propose and analyze, focusing on non-adiabatic effects, a technique of manipulating quantum spin systems based on local 'cutting' and 'stitching' of the Heisenberg exchange coupling between the spins. This first operation is cutting of a bond separating a single spin from a linear chain, or of two neighboring bonds for a ring-shaped array of spins. We show that the disconnected spin can be in the ground state with a high-fidelity even after a non-adiabatic process. Next, we consider inverse operation of stitching these bonds to increase the system size. We show that the optimal control algo…
Rapid and efficient preparation, manipulation and transfer of quantum states through an array of quantum dots (QDs) is a demanding requisite task for quantum information processing and quantum computation in solid-state physics. Conventional adiabatic protocols, as coherent transfer by adiabatic passage (CTAP) and its variations, provide slow transfer prone to decoherence, which could lower the fidelity to some extent. To achieve the robustness against decoherence, we propose a protocol of speeding up the adiabatic charge transfer in multi-QD systems, sharing the concept of "Shortcuts to Adiab…
Using a perturbative treatment, we quantify the influence of non-adiabatic leakage and system dissipation on the transfer fidelity of a stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) process. We find that, optimizing transfer time rather than coupling profiles, leads to a significant improvement of the transfer fidelity. The upper bound of the fidelity has been found as a simple analytical function of system cooperativities. We also provide a systematic approach to reach this upper bound efficiently.
Adiabatic methods are potentially important for quantum information protocols because of their robustness against many sources of technical and fundamental noise. They are particularly useful for quantum transport, and in some cases elementary quantum gates. Here we explore the extension of a particular protocol, dark state adiabatic passage, where a spin state is transported across a branched network of initialised spins, comprising one `input' spin, and multiple leaf spins. We find that maximal entanglement is generated in systems of spin-half particles, or where the system is limited to one…
We propose a protocol to realize fast high-fidelity quantum state transfer between distant optomechanical interfaces connected by a continuum waveguide. The scheme consists of three steps: two accelerating adiabatic processes joined by a population conversion process. In comparison to the traditional adiabatic technique, our method reaches a higher transfer fidelity with a shorter time. Numerical results show that the fidelity of this transfer scheme in the dissipative system mainly depends on the protocol speed and the coupling strength of the waveguide and cavities. Assisted by inverting the…
Adiabatic quantum control protocols have been of wide interest to quantum computation due to their robustness and insensitivity to their actual duration of execution. As an extension of previous quantum learning algorithms, this work proposes to execute some quantum learning protocols based entirely on adiabatic quantum evolution, hence dubbed as ``adiabatic quantum learning". In a conventional quantum machine learning protocol, the output is usually the expectation value of a pre-selected observable and the projective measurement of which forces a quantum circuit to run many times to obtain t…
Adiabatic passage techniques, used to drive a system from one quantum state into another, find widespread application in physics and chemistry. We focus on techniques to spatially transport a quantum amplitude over a strongly coupled system, such as STImulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) and Coherent Tunnelling by Adiabatic Passage (CTAP). Previous results were shown to work on certain graphs, such as linear chains, square and triangular lattices, and branched chains. We prove that similar protocols work much more generally, in a large class of (semi-)bipartite graphs. In particular, unde…
We develop new protocols for high-fidelity single qubit gates that exploit and extend theoretical ideas for accelerated adiabatic evolution. Our protocols are compatible with qubit architectures with highly isolated logical states, where traditional approaches are problematic; a prime example are superconducting fluxonium qubits. By using an accelerated adiabatic protocol we can enforce the desired adiabatic evolution while having gate times that are comparable to the inverse adiabatic energy gap (a scale that is ultimately set by the amount of power used in the control pulses). By modelling t…
We propose a spin-selective coherent electron transfer in a silicon-quantum-dot array. Oscillating magnetic fields and temporally controlled gate voltages are utilised to separate the electron wave function into different quantum dots depending on the spin state. We introduce non-adiabatic and adiabatic protocols which offer fast electron transfer and the robustness against the error in the control-field pulse area, respectively. We also study a shortcut-to-adiabaticity protocol which compromises these two protocols. We show that this scheme can be extended to multi-electron systems straightfo…
We present two applications of emergent local Hamiltonians to speed up quantum adiabatic protocols for isolated noninteracting and weakly interacting fermionic systems in one-dimensional lattices. We demonstrate how to extract maximal work from initial band-insulating states, and how to adiabatically transfer systems from linear and harmonic traps into box traps. Our protocols consist of two stages. The first one involves a free expansion followed by a quench to an emergent local Hamiltonian. In the second stage, the emergent local Hamiltonian is "turned off" quasistatically. For the adiabatic…
The non-adiabatic geometric quantum computation (NGQC) has attracted a lot of attention for noise-resilient quantum control. However, previous implementations of NGQC require long evolution paths that make them more vulnerable to incoherent errors than their dynamical counterparts. In this work, we experimentally realize a universal short-path non-adiabatic geometric gate set (SPNGQC) with a 2-times shorter evolution path on a superconducting quantum processor. Characterizing with both quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking methods, we report an average single-qubit gate fidelit…
Rydberg blockaded gate is a fundamental ingredient for scalable quantum computation with neutral Rydberg atoms. However the fidelity of such a gate is intrinsically limited by a blockade error coming from a Rydberg level shift that forbids its extensive use. Based on a dark-state adiabatic passage, we develop a novel protocol for realizing a two-atom blockade-error-free quantum gate in a hybrid system with simultaneous van der Waals (vdWsI) and resonant dipole-dipole interactions (DDI). The basic idea relies on converting the roles of two interactions, which is, the DDI serves as one time-depe…
Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a widely used protocol to realize high-fidelity and robust quantum control in various quantum systems. However, further application of this protocol in superconducting qubits is limited by population leakage caused by the only weak anharmonicity. Here we introduce an optimally controlled shortcut-to-adiabatic (STA) technique to speed up the STIRAP protocol in a superconducting qudit. By modifying the shapes of the STIRAP pulses, we experimentally realize a fast (32 ns) and high-fidelity quantum state transfer. In addition, we demonstrate that our …
High fidelity two-qubit gates are fundamental for scaling up the superconducting number. We use two qubits coupled via a frequency-tunable coupler which can adjust the coupling strength, and demonstrate the CZ gate using two different schemes, adiabatic and diabatic methods. The Clifford based Randomized Benchmarking (RB) method is used to assess and optimize the CZ gate fidelity. The fidelity of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates are 99.53(8)% and 98.72(2)%, respectively. We also analyze the errors induced by the decoherence. Comparing to 30 ns duration time of adiabatic CZ gate, the duration ti…
We present a robust protocol for implementing high-fidelity multiqubit controlled phase gates $(C^kZ)$ on neutral atom qubits coupled to highly excited Rydberg states. Our approach is based on extending adiabatic rapid passage to two-photon excitation via a short-lived intermediate excited state common to alkali-atom Rydberg experiments, accounting for the full impact of spontaneous decay and differential AC Stark shifts from the complete manifold of hyperfine excited states. We evaluate and optimize gate performance, concluding that for Cs and currently available laser frequencies and powers,…
High-fidelity and robust coherent population transfer is a major challenge in coherent quantum control. Different from the well known adiabatic condition, we present a rigorous adiabatic condition that is inspired by the idea of the Landau-Zener tunneling. Based on this, we propose a coherent population transfer approach, which just needs only one control parameter and depends on the eigenvalues of the systems. Compared to other approaches, such as fast quasiadiabatic dynamics, shortcut to adiabatic passage, we numerically demonstrate that our approach can provide a more high-fidelity and more…
With adiabatic techniques, it is possible to create quantum superposition states with high fidelity while exercising limited control over the parameters of a system. However, because these techniques are slow compared to other timescales in the system, they are usually not suitable for creating highly unstable states or performing time-critical processes. Both of these situations arise in quantum information processing, where entangled states may only be isolated from the environment for a short time and where quantum computers require high-fidelity operations to be performed quickly. Recently…
High-fidelity quantum gates are essential for large-scale quantum computation. However, any quantum manipulation will inevitably affected by noises, systematic errors and decoherence effects, which lead to infidelity of a target quantum task. Therefore, implementing high-fidelity, robust and fast quantum gates is highly desired. Here, we propose a fast and robust scheme to construct high-fidelity holonomic quantum gates for universal quantum computation based on resonant interaction of three-level quantum systems via shortcuts to adiabaticity. In our proposal, the target Hamiltonian to induce …
We propose a method to obtain optimal protocols for adiabatic ground-state preparation near the adiabatic limit, extending earlier ideas from [D. A. Sivak and G. E. Crooks, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 190602 (2012)] to quantum non-dissipative systems. The space of controllable parameters of isolated quantum many-body systems is endowed with a Riemannian quantum metric structure, which can be exploited when such systems are driven adiabatically. Here, we use this metric structure to construct optimal protocols in order to accomplish the task of adiabatic ground-state preparation in a fixed amount of …
We propose a protocol for quantum adiabatic optimization, whereby an intermediary Hamiltonian that is diagonal in the computational basis is turned on and off during the interpolation. This `diagonal catalyst' serves to bias the energy landscape towards a given spin configuration, and we show how this can remove the first-order phase transition present in the standard protocol for the ferromagnetic $p$-spin and the Weak-Strong Cluster problems. The success of the protocol also makes clear how it can fail: biasing the energy landscape towards a state only helps in finding the ground state if th…

We put forth a hitherto unexplored control strategy that enables finite-speed, high-fidelity transport of a quantum wavepacket through a low-temperature dissipative medium. The control consists in confining the wavepacket within a shallow anharmonic trap (tweezer), whose nonuniform velocity is steered so as to maximize the transfer fidelity between two locations. A relevant scenario is a quantum impurity moving through an ultracold gas. Unlike shortcuts to adiabaticity, our approach can simultaneously cope with wavepacket leakage via non-adiabatic and phonon-mediated processes, provided both a…
Accurate control of a quantum system is a fundamental requirement in many areas of modern science ranging from quantum information processing to high-precision measurements. A significantly important goal in quantum control is to prepare a desired state as fast as possible with sufficiently high fidelity allowed by available resources and experimental constraints. Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a robust way to realize high-fidelity state transfer but it requires a sufficiently long operation time to satisfy the adiabatic criteria. We here theoretically propose and then experime…
