Recently, universal waveform generation tasks have been investigated conditioned on various out-of-distribution scenarios. Although GAN-based methods have shown their strength in fast waveform generation, they are vulnerable to train-inference mismatch scenarios such as two-stage text-to-speech. Meanwhile, diffusion-based models have shown their powerful generative performance in other domains; however, they stay out of the limelight due to slow inference speed in waveform generation tasks. Above all, there is no generator architecture that can explicitly disentangle the natural periodic features of high-resolution waveform signals. In this paper, we propose PeriodWave, a novel universal waveform generation model. First, we introduce a period-aware flow matching estimator that can capture the periodic features of the waveform signal when estimating the vector fields. Additionally, we utilize a multi-period estimator that avoids overlaps to capture different periodic features of waveform signals. Although increasing the number of periods can improve the performance significantly, this requires more computational costs. To reduce this issue, we also propose a single period-conditional universal estimator that can feed-forward parallel by period-wise batch inference. Additionally, we utilize discrete wavelet transform to losslessly disentangle the frequency information of waveform signals for high-frequency modeling, and introduce FreeU to reduce the high-frequency noise for waveform generation. The experimental results demonstrated that our model outperforms the previous models both in Mel-spectrogram reconstruction and text-to-speech tasks. We present a novel high-fidelity real-time neural vocoder called VocGAN. A recently developed GAN-based vocoder, MelGAN, produces speech waveforms in real-time. However, it often produces a waveform that is insufficient in quality or inconsistent with acoustic characteristics of the input mel spectrogram. VocGAN is nearly as fast as MelGAN, but it significantly improves the quality and consistency of the output waveform. VocGAN applies a multi-scale waveform generator and a hierarchically-nested discriminator to learn multiple levels of acoustic properties in a balanced way. It also applies th…
We propose Universal MelGAN, a vocoder that synthesizes high-fidelity speech in multiple domains. To preserve sound quality when the MelGAN-based structure is trained with a dataset of hundreds of speakers, we added multi-resolution spectrogram discriminators to sharpen the spectral resolution of the generated waveforms. This enables the model to generate realistic waveforms of multi-speakers, by alleviating the over-smoothing problem in the high frequency band of the large footprint model. Our structure generates signals close to ground-truth data without reducing the inference speed, by disc…
This paper presents a novel high-fidelity and low-latency universal neural vocoder framework based on multiband WaveRNN with data-driven linear prediction for discrete waveform modeling (MWDLP). MWDLP employs a coarse-fine bit WaveRNN architecture for 10-bit mu-law waveform modeling. A sparse gated recurrent unit with a relatively large size of hidden units is utilized, while the multiband modeling is deployed to achieve real-time low-latency usage. A novel technique for data-driven linear prediction (LP) with discrete waveform modeling is proposed, where the LP coefficients are estimated in a…
Most GAN(Generative Adversarial Network)-based approaches towards high-fidelity waveform generation heavily rely on discriminators to improve their performance. However, GAN methods introduce much uncertainty into the generation process and often result in mismatches of pitch and intensity, which is fatal when it comes to sensitive use cases such as singing voice synthesis(SVS). To address this problem, we propose RefineGAN, a high-fidelity neural vocoder focused on the robustness, pitch and intensity accuracy, and high-speed full-band audio generation. We applyed a pitch-guided refine archite…
Most neural vocoders employ band-limited mel-spectrograms to generate waveforms. If full-band spectral features are used as the input, the vocoder can be provided with as much acoustic information as possible. However, in some models employing full-band mel-spectrograms, an over-smoothing problem occurs as part of which non-sharp spectrograms are generated. To address this problem, we propose UnivNet, a neural vocoder that synthesizes high-fidelity waveforms in real time. Inspired by works in the field of voice activity detection, we added a multi-resolution spectrogram discriminator that empl…
Although state-of-the-art parallel WaveNet has addressed the issue of real-time waveform generation, there remains problems. Firstly, due to the noisy input signal of the model, there is still a gap between the quality of generated and natural waveforms. Secondly, a parallel WaveNet is trained under a distillation framework, which makes it tedious to adapt a well trained model to a new speaker. To address these two problems, in this paper we propose an end-to-end adaptation method based on the generative adversarial network (GAN), which can reduce the computational cost for the training of new…
We propose Parallel WaveGAN, a distillation-free, fast, and small-footprint waveform generation method using a generative adversarial network. In the proposed method, a non-autoregressive WaveNet is trained by jointly optimizing multi-resolution spectrogram and adversarial loss functions, which can effectively capture the time-frequency distribution of the realistic speech waveform. As our method does not require density distillation used in the conventional teacher-student framework, the entire model can be easily trained. Furthermore, our model is able to generate high-fidelity speech even w…
In this paper, we propose WG-WaveNet, a fast, lightweight, and high-quality waveform generation model. WG-WaveNet is composed of a compact flow-based model and a post-filter. The two components are jointly trained by maximizing the likelihood of the training data and optimizing loss functions on the frequency domains. As we design a flow-based model that is heavily compressed, the proposed model requires much less computational resources compared to other waveform generation models during both training and inference time; even though the model is highly compressed, the post-filter maintains th…

Our previous work, the unified source-filter GAN (uSFGAN) vocoder, introduced a novel architecture based on the source-filter theory into the parallel waveform generative adversarial network to achieve high voice quality and pitch controllability. However, the high temporal resolution inputs result in high computation costs. Although the HiFi-GAN vocoder achieves fast high-fidelity voice generation thanks to the efficient upsampling-based generator architecture, the pitch controllability is severely limited. To realize a fast and pitch-controllable high-fidelity neural vocoder, we introduce th…
Neural vocoders based on the generative adversarial neural network (GAN) have been widely used due to their fast inference speed and lightweight networks while generating high-quality speech waveforms. Since the perceptually important speech components are primarily concentrated in the low-frequency bands, most GAN-based vocoders perform multi-scale analysis that evaluates downsampled speech waveforms. This multi-scale analysis helps the generator improve speech intelligibility. However, in preliminary experiments, we discovered that the multi-scale analysis which focuses on the low-frequency …
In this work, we propose DiffWave, a versatile diffusion probabilistic model for conditional and unconditional waveform generation. The model is non-autoregressive, and converts the white noise signal into structured waveform through a Markov chain with a constant number of steps at synthesis. It is efficiently trained by optimizing a variant of variational bound on the data likelihood. DiffWave produces high-fidelity audios in different waveform generation tasks, including neural vocoding conditioned on mel spectrogram, class-conditional generation, and unconditional generation. We demonstrat…
We propose a lightweight end-to-end text-to-speech model using multi-band generation and inverse short-time Fourier transform. Our model is based on VITS, a high-quality end-to-end text-to-speech model, but adopts two changes for more efficient inference: 1) the most computationally expensive component is partially replaced with a simple inverse short-time Fourier transform, and 2) multi-band generation, with fixed or trainable synthesis filters, is used to generate waveforms. Unlike conventional lightweight models, which employ optimization or knowledge distillation separately to train two ca…
Recently, autoregressive neural vocoders have provided remarkable performance in generating high-fidelity speech and have been able to produce synthetic speech in real-time. However, autoregressive neural vocoders such as WaveFlow are capable of modeling waveform signals from mel-spectrogram, its number of parameters is significant to deploy on edge devices. Though NanoFlow, which has a small number of parameters, is a state-of-the-art autoregressive neural vocoder, the performance of NanoFlow is marginally lower than WaveFlow. Therefore, we propose a new type of autoregressive neural vocoder …
Several recent work on speech synthesis have employed generative adversarial networks (GANs) to produce raw waveforms. Although such methods improve the sampling efficiency and memory usage, their sample quality has not yet reached that of autoregressive and flow-based generative models. In this work, we propose HiFi-GAN, which achieves both efficient and high-fidelity speech synthesis. As speech audio consists of sinusoidal signals with various periods, we demonstrate that modeling periodic patterns of an audio is crucial for enhancing sample quality. A subjective human evaluation (mean opini…

Adversarial waveform generation has been a popular approach as the backend of singing voice conversion (SVC) to generate high-quality singing audio. However, the instability of GAN also leads to other problems, such as pitch jitters and U/V errors. It affects the smoothness and continuity of harmonics, hence degrades the conversion quality seriously. This paper proposes to feed harmonic signals to the SVC model in advance to enhance audio generation. We extract the sine excitation from the pitch, and filter it with a linear time-varying (LTV) filter estimated by a neural network. Both these tw…

Recently, GAN-based neural vocoders such as Parallel WaveGAN, MelGAN, HiFiGAN, and UnivNet have become popular due to their lightweight and parallel structure, resulting in a real-time synthesized waveform with high fidelity, even on a CPU. HiFiGAN and UnivNet are two SOTA vocoders. Despite their high quality, there is still room for improvement. In this paper, motivated by the structure of Vision Outlooker from computer vision, we adopt a similar idea and propose an effective and lightweight neural vocoder called WOLONet. In this network, we develop a novel lightweight block that uses a locat…

Efficient audio synthesis is an inherently difficult machine learning task, as human perception is sensitive to both global structure and fine-scale waveform coherence. Autoregressive models, such as WaveNet, model local structure at the expense of global latent structure and slow iterative sampling, while Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), have global latent conditioning and efficient parallel sampling, but struggle to generate locally-coherent audio waveforms. Herein, we demonstrate that GANs can in fact generate high-fidelity and locally-coherent audio by modeling log magnitudes and in…

Deep generative models applied to audio have improved by a large margin the state-of-the-art in many speech and music related tasks. However, as raw waveform modelling remains an inherently difficult task, audio generative models are either computationally intensive, rely on low sampling rates, are complicated to control or restrict the nature of possible signals. Among those models, Variational AutoEncoders (VAE) give control over the generation by exposing latent variables, although they usually suffer from low synthesis quality. In this paper, we introduce a Realtime Audio Variational autoE…
This paper introduces WaveGrad 2, a non-autoregressive generative model for text-to-speech synthesis. WaveGrad 2 is trained to estimate the gradient of the log conditional density of the waveform given a phoneme sequence. The model takes an input phoneme sequence, and through an iterative refinement process, generates an audio waveform. This contrasts to the original WaveGrad vocoder which conditions on mel-spectrogram features, generated by a separate model. The iterative refinement process starts from Gaussian noise, and through a series of refinement steps (e.g., 50 steps), progressively re…

In recent works, a flow-based neural vocoder has shown significant improvement in real-time speech generation task. The sequence of invertible flow operations allows the model to convert samples from simple distribution to audio samples. However, training a continuous density model on discrete audio data can degrade model performance due to the topological difference between latent and actual distribution. To resolve this problem, we propose audio dequantization methods in flow-based neural vocoder for high fidelity audio generation. Data dequantization is a well-known method in image generati…
GAN-based neural vocoders, such as Parallel WaveGAN and MelGAN have attracted great interest due to their lightweight and parallel structures, enabling them to generate high fidelity waveform in a real-time manner. In this paper, inspired by Relativistic GAN, we introduce a novel variant of the LSGAN framework under the context of waveform synthesis, named Pointwise Relativistic LSGAN (PRLSGAN). In this approach, we take the truism score distribution into consideration and combine the original MSE loss with the proposed pointwise relative discrepancy loss to increase the difficulty of the gene…
Current two-stage TTS framework typically integrates an acoustic model with a vocoder -- the acoustic model predicts a low resolution intermediate representation such as Mel-spectrum while the vocoder generates waveform from the intermediate representation. Although the intermediate representation is served as a bridge, there still exists critical mismatch between the acoustic model and the vocoder as they are commonly separately learned and work on different distributions of representation, leading to inevitable artifacts in the synthesized speech. In this work, different from using pre-desig…
Recent advances in visually-induced audio generation are based on sampling short, low-fidelity, and one-class sounds. Moreover, sampling 1 second of audio from the state-of-the-art model takes minutes on a high-end GPU. In this work, we propose a single model capable of generating visually relevant, high-fidelity sounds prompted with a set of frames from open-domain videos in less time than it takes to play it on a single GPU. We train a transformer to sample a new spectrogram from the pre-trained spectrogram codebook given the set of video features. The codebook is obtained using a variant of…

Despite recent progress in generative adversarial network (GAN)-based vocoders, where the model generates raw waveform conditioned on acoustic features, it is challenging to synthesize high-fidelity audio for numerous speakers across various recording environments. In this work, we present BigVGAN, a universal vocoder that generalizes well for various out-of-distribution scenarios without fine-tuning. We introduce periodic activation function and anti-aliased representation into the GAN generator, which brings the desired inductive bias for audio synthesis and significantly improves audio qual…

High-fidelity singing voices usually require higher sampling rate (e.g., 48kHz) to convey expression and emotion. However, higher sampling rate causes the wider frequency band and longer waveform sequences and throws challenges for singing voice synthesis (SVS) in both frequency and time domains. Conventional SVS systems that adopt small sampling rate cannot well address the above challenges. In this paper, we develop HiFiSinger, an SVS system towards high-fidelity singing voice. HiFiSinger consists of a FastSpeech based acoustic model and a Parallel WaveGAN based vocoder to ensure fast traini…
This paper introduces WaveGrad, a conditional model for waveform generation which estimates gradients of the data density. The model is built on prior work on score matching and diffusion probabilistic models. It starts from a Gaussian white noise signal and iteratively refines the signal via a gradient-based sampler conditioned on the mel-spectrogram. WaveGrad offers a natural way to trade inference speed for sample quality by adjusting the number of refinement steps, and bridges the gap between non-autoregressive and autoregressive models in terms of audio quality. We find that it can genera…
