Teaching Computer Science (CS) by having students write programs by hand on paper has key pedagogical advantages: It allows focused learning and requires careful thinking compared to the use of Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) with intelligent support tools or "just trying things out". The familiar environment of pens and paper also lessens the cognitive load of students with no prior experience with computers, for whom the mere basic usage of computers can be intimidating. Finally, this teaching approach opens learning opportunities to students with limited access to computers.
However, a key obstacle is the current lack of teaching methods and support software for working with and running handwritten programs. Optical character recognition (OCR) of handwritten code is challenging: Minor OCR errors, perhaps due to varied handwriting styles, easily make code not run, and recognizing indentation is crucial for languages like Python but is difficult to do due to inconsistent horizontal spacing in handwriting. Our approach integrates two innovative methods. The first combines OCR with an indentation recognition module and a language model designed for post-OCR error correction without introducing hallucinations. This method, to our knowledge, surpasses all existing systems in handwritten code recognition. It reduces error from 30\% in the state of the art to 5\% with minimal hallucination of logical fixes to student programs. The second method leverages a multimodal language model to recognize handwritten programs in an end-to-end fashion. We hope this contribution can stimulate further pedagogical research and contribute to the goal of making CS education universally accessible. We release a dataset of handwritten programs and code to support future research at https://github.com/mdoumbouya/codeocr
To automatically correct handwritten assignments, the traditional approach is to use an OCR model to recognize characters and compare them to answers. The OCR model easily gets confused on recognizing handwritten Chinese characters, and the textual information of the answers is missing during the model inference. However, teachers always have these answers in mind to review and correct assignments. In this paper, we focus on the Chinese cloze tests correction and propose a multimodal approach (named AiM). The encoded representations of answers interact with the visual information of students' …
Researches have been done on Ethiopic scripts. However studies excluded the Geez numbers from the studies because of different reasons. This paper presents offline handwritten and machine printed Geez number recognition using feed forward back propagation artificial neural network. On this study, different Geez image characters were collected from google image search and three persons are instructed to write the numbers using pencil. In total we have collected 560 numbers of characters. We have used 460 of the characters for training and 100 are used for testing. Accordingly we have achieved o…

Objective of the current work is to develop an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engine for information Just In Time (iJIT) system that can be used for recognition of handwritten textual annotations of lower case Roman script. Tesseract open source OCR engine under Apache License 2.0 is used to develop user-specific handwriting recognition models, viz., the language sets, for the said system, where each user is identified by a unique identification tag associated with the digital pen. To generate the language set for any user, Tesseract is trained with labeled handwritten data samples of iso…
Optical character recognition (OCR) systems performance have improved significantly in the deep learning era. This is especially true for handwritten text recognition (HTR), where each author has a unique style, unlike printed text, where the variation is smaller by design. That said, deep learning based HTR is limited, as in every other task, by the number of training examples. Gathering data is a challenging and costly task, and even more so, the labeling task that follows, of which we focus here. One possible approach to reduce the burden of data annotation is semi-supervised learning. Semi…

The long-standing challenges for offline handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR) are twofold: Chinese characters can be very diverse and complicated while similarly looking, and cursive handwriting (due to increased writing speed and infrequent pen lifting) makes strokes and even characters connected together in a flowing manner. In this paper, we propose the template and instance loss functions for the relevant machine learning tasks in offline handwritten Chinese character recognition. First, the character template is designed to deal with the intrinsic similarities among Chinese ch…
In handwritten character recognition, benchmark database plays an important role in evaluating the performance of various algorithms and the results obtained by various researchers. In Devnagari script, there is lack of such official benchmark. This paper focuses on the generation of offline benchmark database for Devnagari handwritten numerals and characters. The present work generated 5137 and 20305 isolated samples for numeral and character database, respectively, from 750 writers of all ages, sex, education, and profession. The offline sample images are stored in TIFF image format as it oc…

As of recent generative adversarial networks have allowed for big leaps in the realism of generated images in diverse domains, not the least of which being handwritten text generation. The generation of realistic-looking hand-written text is important because it can be used for data augmentation in handwritten text recognition (HTR) systems or human-computer interaction. We propose SmartPatch, a new technique increasing the performance of current state-of-the-art methods by augmenting the training feedback with a tailored solution to mitigate pen-level artifacts. We combine the well-known patc…

Finding the name of an unknown symbol is often hard, but writing the symbol is easy. This bachelor's thesis presents multiple systems that use the pen trajectory to classify handwritten symbols. Five preprocessing steps, one data augmentation algorithm, five features and five variants for multilayer Perceptron training were evaluated using 166898 recordings which were collected with two crowdsourcing projects. The evaluation results of these 21 experiments were used to create an optimized recognizer which has a TOP1 error of less than 17.5% and a TOP3 error of 4.0%. This is an improvement of 1…
This paper proposes an end-to-end framework, namely fully convolutional recurrent network (FCRN) for handwritten Chinese text recognition (HCTR). Unlike traditional methods that rely heavily on segmentation, our FCRN is trained with online text data directly and learns to associate the pen-tip trajectory with a sequence of characters. FCRN consists of four parts: a path-signature layer to extract signature features from the input pen-tip trajectory, a fully convolutional network to learn informative representation, a sequence modeling layer to make per-frame predictions on the input sequence a…

Online handwritten Chinese text recognition (OHCTR) is a challenging problem as it involves a large-scale character set, ambiguous segmentation, and variable-length input sequences. In this paper, we exploit the outstanding capability of path signature to translate online pen-tip trajectories into informative signature feature maps using a sliding window-based method, successfully capturing the analytic and geometric properties of pen strokes with strong local invariance and robustness. A multi-spatial-context fully convolutional recurrent network (MCFCRN) is proposed to exploit the multiple s…
This abstract explores an RNN-based approach to online handwritten recognition problem. Our method uses data from an accelerometer and a gyroscope mounted on a handheld pen-like device to train and run a character pre-diction model. We have built a dataset of timestamped gyroscope and accelerometer data gathered during the manual process of handwriting Latin characters, labeled with the character being written; in total, the dataset con-sists of 1500 gyroscope and accelerometer data sequenc-es for 8 characters of the Latin alphabet from 6 different people, and 20 characters, each 1500 samples …
