A flaky test yields inconsistent results upon repetition, posing a significant challenge to software developers. An extensive study of their presence and characteristics has been done in classical computer software but not quantum computer software. In this paper, we outline challenges and potential solutions for the automated detection of flaky tests in bug reports of quantum software. We aim to raise awareness of flakiness in quantum software and encourage the software engineering community to work collaboratively to solve this emerging challenge.
Much research on software testing makes an implicit assumption that test failures are deterministic such that they always witness the presence of the same defects. However, this assumption is not always true because some test failures are due to so-called flaky tests, i.e., tests with non-deterministic outcomes. Unfortunately, flaky tests have major implications for testing and test-dependent activities such as mutation testing and automated program repair. To deal with this issue, we introduce a test flakiness assessment and experimentation platform, called FlakiMe, that supports the seeding …
Tests that cause spurious failures without any code changes, i.e., flaky tests, hamper regression testing, increase maintenance costs, may shadow real bugs, and decrease trust in tests. While the prevalence and importance of flakiness is well established, prior research focused on Java projects, thus raising the question of how the findings generalize. In order to provide a better understanding of the role of flakiness in software development beyond Java, we empirically study the prevalence, causes, and degree of flakiness within software written in Python, one of the currently most popular pr…
Flaky tests are software tests that exhibit a seemingly random outcome (pass or fail) when run against the same, identical code. Previous work has examined fixes to flaky tests and has proposed automated solutions to locate as well as fix flaky tests--we complement it by examining the perceptions of software developers about the nature, relevance, and challenges of this phenomenon. We asked 21 professional developers to classify 200 flaky tests they previously fixed, in terms of the nature of the flakiness, the origin of the flakiness, and the fixing effort. We complement this analysis with in…
Flaky tests cause significant problems as they can interrupt automated build processes that rely on all tests succeeding and undermine the trustworthiness of tests. Numerous causes of test flakiness have been identified, and program analyses exist to detect such tests. Typically, these methods produce advice to developers on how to refactor tests in order to make test outcomes deterministic. We argue that one source of flakiness is the lack of assumptions that precisely describe under which circumstances a test is meaningful. We devise a sanitisation technique that can isolate f laky tests qui…
Modern automated program repair (APR) is well-tuned to finding and repairing bugs that introduce observable erroneous behavior to a program. However, a significant class of bugs does not lead to such observable behavior (e.g., liveness/termination bugs, non-functional bugs, and information flow bugs). Such bugs can generally not be handled with current APR approaches, so, as a community, we need to develop complementary techniques. To stimulate the systematic study of alternative APR approaches and hybrid APR combinations, we devise a novel bug classification system that enables methodical ana…
Bug reports are vital for software maintenance that allow users to inform developers of the problems encountered while using software. However, it is difficult for non-technical users to write clear descriptions about the bug occurrence. Therefore, more and more users begin to record the screen for reporting bugs as it is easy to be created and contains detailed procedures triggering the bug. But it is still tedious and time-consuming for developers to reproduce the bug due to the length and unclear actions within the recording. To overcome these issues, we propose GIFdroid, a light-weight app…
Android apps are GUI-based event-driven software and have become ubiquitous in recent years. Obviously, functional correctness is critical for an app's success. However, in addition to crash bugs, non-crashing functional bugs (in short as "non-crashing bugs" in this work) like inadvertent function failures, silent user data lost and incorrect display information are prevalent, even in popular, well-tested apps. These non-crashing functional bugs are usually caused by program logic errors and manifest themselves on the graphic user interfaces (GUIs). In practice, such bugs pose significant chal…
Software debugging, and program repair are among the most time-consuming and labor-intensive tasks in software engineering that would benefit a lot from automation. In this paper, we propose a novel automated program repair approach based on CodeBERT, which is a transformer-based neural architecture pre-trained on large corpus of source code. We fine-tune our model on the ManySStuBs4J small and large datasets to automatically generate the fix codes. The results show that our technique accurately predicts the fixed codes implemented by the developers in 19-72% of the cases, depending on the typ…
In this paper, we propose a mathematical framework for automated bug localization. This framework can be briefly summarized as follows. A program execution can be represented as a rooted acyclic directed graph. We define an execution snapshot by a cut-set on the graph. A program state can be regarded as a conjunction of labels on edges in a cut-set. Then we argue that a debugging task is a pruning process of the execution graph by using cut-sets. A pruning algorithm, i.e., a debugging task, is also presented.
The characterization of bug datasets is essential to support the evaluation of automatic program repair tools. In a previous work, we manually studied almost 400 human-written patches (bug fixes) from the Defects4J dataset and annotated them with properties, such as repair patterns. However, manually finding these patterns in different datasets is tedious and time-consuming. To address this activity, we designed and implemented PPD, a detector of repair patterns in patches, which performs source code change analysis at abstract-syntax tree level. In this paper, we report on PPD and its evaluat…
Context: Software performance is a critical non-functional requirement, appearing in many fields such as mission critical applications, financial, and real time systems. In this work we focused on early detection of performance bugs; our software under study was a real time system used in the advertisement/marketing domain. Goal: Find a simple and easy to implement solution, predicting performance bugs. Method: We built several models using four machine learning methods, commonly used for defect prediction: C4.5 Decision Trees, Na\"ıve Bayes, Bayesian Networks, and Logistic Regression. Results…

Software systems have been continuously evolved and delivered with high quality due to the widespread adoption of automated tests. A recurring issue hurting this scenario is the presence of flaky tests, a test case that may pass or fail non-deterministically. A promising, but yet lacking more empirical evidence, approach is to collect static data of automated tests and use them to predict their flakiness. In this paper, we conducted an empirical study to assess the use of code identifiers to predict test flakiness. To do so, we first replicate most parts of the previous study of Pinto~et~al.~(…
Context: Issue tracking systems are used to track and describe tasks in the development process, e.g., requested feature improvements or reported bugs. However, past research has shown that the reported issue types often do not match the description of the issue. Objective: We want to understand the overall maturity of the state of the art of issue type prediction with the goal to predict if issues are bugs and evaluate if we can improve existing models by incorporating manually specified knowledge about issues. Method: We train different models for the title and description of the issue to ac…

The continuous inflow of bug reports is a considerable challenge in large development projects. Inspired by contemporary work on mining software repositories, we designed a prototype bug assignment solution based on machine learning in 2011-2016. The prototype evolved into an internal Ericsson product, TRR, in 2017-2018. TRR's first bug assignment without human intervention happened in April 2019. Our study evaluates the adoption of TRR within its industrial context at Ericsson. Moreover, we investigate 1) how TRR performs in the field, 2) what value TRR provides to Ericsson, and 3) how TRR ha…

Reversible debuggers have been developed at least since 1970. Such a feature is useful when the cause of a bug is close in time to the bug manifestation. When the cause is far back in time, one resorts to setting appropriate breakpoints in the debugger and beginning a new debugging session. For these cases when the cause of a bug is far in time from its manifestation, bug diagnosis requires a series of debugging sessions with which to narrow down the cause of the bug. For such "difficult" bugs, this work presents an automated tool to search through the process lifetime and locate the cause. As…
Significant interest in applying Deep Neural Network (DNN) has fueled the need to support engineering of software that uses DNNs. Repairing software that uses DNNs is one such unmistakable SE need where automated tools could be beneficial; however, we do not fully understand challenges to repairing and patterns that are utilized when manually repairing DNNs. What challenges should automated repair tools address? What are the repair patterns whose automation could help developers? Which repair patterns should be assigned a higher priority for building automated bug repair tools? This work prese…
This paper is about understanding the nature of bug fixing by analyzing thousands of bug fix transactions of software repositories. It then places this learned knowledge in the context of automated program repair. We give extensive empirical results on the nature of human bug fixes at a large scale and a fine granularity with abstract syntax tree differencing. We set up mathematical reasoning on the search space of automated repair and the time to navigate through it. By applying our method on 14 repositories of Java software and 89,993 versioning transactions, we show that not all probabilist…
Research in automatic program repair has shown that real bugs can be automatically fixed. However, there are several challenges involved in such a task that are not yet fully addressed. As an example, consider that a test-suite-based repair tool performs a change in a program to fix a bug spotted by a failing test case, but then the same or another test case fails. This could mean that the change is a partial fix for the bug or that another bug was manifested. However, the repair tool discards the change and possibly performs other repair attempts. One might wonder if the applied change should…
In a software project, esp. in open-source, a contribution is a valuable piece of work made to the project: writing code, reporting bugs, translating, improving documentation, creating graphics, etc. We are now at the beginning of an exciting era where software bots will make contributions that are of similar nature than those by humans. Dry contributions, with no explanation, are often ignored or rejected, because the contribution is not understandable per se, because they are not put into a larger context, because they are not grounded on idioms shared by the core community of developers. We…
Non-deterministically behaving test cases cause developers to lose trust in their regression test suites and to eventually ignore failures. Detecting flaky tests is therefore a crucial task in maintaining code quality, as it builds the necessary foundation for any form of systematic response to flakiness, such as test quarantining or automated debugging. Previous research has proposed various methods to detect flakiness, but when trying to deploy these in an industrial context, their reliance on instrumentation, test reruns, or language-specific artifacts was inhibitive. In this paper, we ther…
One of the key tasks related to ensuring mobile app quality is the reporting, management, and resolution of bug reports. As such, researchers have committed considerable resources toward automating various tasks of the bug management process for mobile apps, such as reproduction and triaging. However, the success of these automated approaches is largely dictated by the characteristics and properties of the bug reports they operate upon. As such, understanding mobile app bug reports is imperative to drive the continued advancement of report management techniques. While prior studies have examin…
We present World of Bugs (WOB), an open platform that aims to support Automated Bug Detection (ABD) research in video games. We discuss some open problems in ABD and how they relate to the platform's design, arguing that learning-based solutions are required if further progress is to be made. The platform's key feature is a growing collection of common video game bugs that may be used for training and evaluating ABD approaches.
Context: The identification of bugs within the reported issues in an issue tracker is crucial for the triage of issues. Machine learning models have shown promising results regarding the performance of automated issue type prediction. However, we have only limited knowledge beyond our assumptions how such models identify bugs. LIME and SHAP are popular technique to explain the predictions of classifiers. Objective: We want to understand if machine learning models provide explanations for the classification that are reasonable to us as humans and align with our assumptions of what the models sh…
Software bugs are prevalent in modern software systems and notoriously hard to debug manually. Therefore, a large body of research efforts have been dedicated to automated software debugging, including both automated fault localization and program repair. However, the existing fault localization techniques are usually ineffective on real-world software systems while even the most advanced program repair techniques can only fix a small ratio of real-world bugs. Although fault localization and program repair are inherently connected, we observe that in the literature their only connection is tha…
We introduce Bug-Injector, a system that automatically creates benchmarks for customized evaluation of static analysis tools. We share a benchmark generated using Bug-Injector and illustrate its efficacy by using it to evaluate the recall of two leading open-source static analysis tools: Clang Static Analyzer and Infer. Bug-Injector works by inserting bugs based on bug templates into real-world host programs. It runs tests on the host program to collect dynamic traces, searches the traces for a point where the state satisfies the preconditions for some bug template, then modifies the host prog…
To support software developers in finding and fixing software bugs, several automated program repair techniques have been introduced. Given a test suite, standard methods usually either synthesize a repair, or navigate a search space of software edits to find test-suite passing variants. Recent program repair methods are based on deep learning approaches. One of these novel methods, which is not primarily intended for automated program repair, but is still suitable for it, is ChatGPT. The bug fixing performance of ChatGPT, however, is so far unclear. Therefore, in this paper we evaluate ChatGP…
Crowdtesting has grown to be an effective alter-native to traditional testing, especially in mobile apps. However, crowdtesting is hard to manage in nature. Given the complexity of mobile applications and unpredictability of distributed, parallel crowdtesting process, it is difficult to estimate (a) the remaining number of bugs as yet undetected or (b) the required cost to find those bugs. Experience-based decisions may result in ineffective crowdtesting process. This paper aims at exploring automated decision support to effectively manage crowdtesting process. The proposed ISENSE applies incre…
