This paper applies the functional sieve bootstrap (FSB) to estimate the distribution of the partial sum process for time series stemming from a weakly stationary functional process. Consistency of the FSB procedure under weak assumptions on the underlying functional process is established. This result allows for the application of the FSB procedure to testing for a change-point in the mean of a functional time series using the CUSUM-statistic. We show that the FSB asymptotically correctly estimates critical values of the CUSUM-based test under the null-hypothesis. Consistency of the FSB-based test under local alternatives also is proven. The finite sample performance of the procedure is studied via simulations.
This paper investigates bootstrap-based bias correction of semiparametric estimators of the long memory parameter, $d$, in fractionally integrated processes. The re-sampling method involves the application of the sieve bootstrap to data pre-filtered by a preliminary semiparametric estimate of the long memory parameter. Theoretical justification for using the bootstrap technique to bias adjust log periodogram and semiparametric local Whittle estimators of the memory parameter is provided in the case where the true value of $d$ lies in the range $0\leq d<0.5$. That the bootstrap method provides …
When a finite order vector autoregressive model is fitted to VAR($\infty$) data the asymptotic distribution of statistics obtained via smooth functions of least-squares estimates requires care. Lütkepohl and Poskitt (1991) provide a closed-form expression for the limiting distribution of (structural) impulse responses for sieve VAR models based on the Delta method. Yet, numerical simulations have shown that confidence intervals built in such way appear overly conservative. In this note I argue that these results stem naturally from the limit arguments used in Lütkepohl and Poskitt (1991), that…
A bootstrap procedure for functional time series is proposed which exploits a general vector autoregressive representation of the time series of Fourier coefficients appearing in the Karhunen-Loève expansion of the functional process. A double sieve-type bootstrap method is developed which avoids the estimation of process operators and generates functional pseudo-time series that appropriately mimic the dependence structure of the functional time series at hand. The method uses a finite set of functional principal components to capture the essential driving parts of the infinite dimensional pr…
We are concerned with nonparametric hypothesis testing of time series functionals. It is known that the popular autoregressive sieve bootstrap is, in general, not valid for statistics whose (asymptotic) distribution depends on moments of order higher than two, irrespective of whether the data come from a linear time series or a nonlinear one. Inspired by nonlinear system theory we circumvent this non-validity by introducing a higher-order bootstrap scheme based on the Volterra series representation of the process. In order to estimate coefficients of such a representation efficiently, we rely …
This article reviews recent progress in high-dimensional bootstrap. We first review high-dimensional central limit theorems for distributions of sample mean vectors over the rectangles, bootstrap consistency results in high dimensions, and key techniques used to establish those results. We then review selected applications of high-dimensional bootstrap: construction of simultaneous confidence sets for high-dimensional vector parameters, multiple hypothesis testing via stepdown, post-selection inference, intersection bounds for partially identified parameters, and inference on best policies in …
Constructing confidence intervals for the coefficients of high-dimensional sparse linear models remains a challenge, mainly because of the complicated limiting distributions of the widely used estimators, such as the lasso. Several methods have been developed for constructing such intervals. Bootstrap lasso+ols is notable for its technical simplicity, good interpretability, and performance that is comparable with that of other more complicated methods. However, bootstrap lasso+ols depends on the beta-min assumption, a theoretic criterion that is often violated in practice. Thus, we introduce a…
A model-free bootstrap procedure for a general class of stationary time series is introduced. The theoretical framework is established, showing asymptotic validity of bootstrap confidence intervals for many statistics of interest. In addition, asymptotic validity of one-step ahead bootstrap prediction intervals is also demonstrated. Finite-sample experiments are conducted to empirically confirm the performance of the new method, and to compare with popular methods such as the block bootstrap and the autoregressive (AR)-sieve bootstrap.
This paper makes several important contributions to the literature about nonparametric instrumental variables (NPIV) estimation and inference on a structural function $h_0$ and its functionals. First, we derive sup-norm convergence rates for computationally simple sieve NPIV (series 2SLS) estimators of $h_0$ and its derivatives. Second, we derive a lower bound that describes the best possible (minimax) sup-norm rates of estimating $h_0$ and its derivatives, and show that the sieve NPIV estimator can attain the minimax rates when $h_0$ is approximated via a spline or wavelet sieve. Our optimal …
This paper proposes a Kolmogorov-Smirnov type statistic and a Cramér-von Mises type statistic to test linearity in semi-functional partially linear regression models. Our test statistics are based on a residual marked empirical process indexed by a randomly projected functional covariate, which is able to circumvent the "curse of dimensionality" brought by the functional covariate. The asymptotic properties of the proposed test statistics under the null, the fixed alternative, and a sequence of local alternatives converging to the null at the $n^{1/2}$ rate are established. A straightforward wi…
The bootstrap, introduced by Efron (1982), has become a very popular method for estimating variances and constructing confidence intervals. A key insight is that one can approximate the properties of estimators by using the empirical distribution function of the sample as an approximation for the true distribution function. This approach views the uncertainty in the estimator as coming exclusively from sampling uncertainty. We argue that for causal estimands the uncertainty arises entirely, or partially, from a different source, corresponding to the stochastic nature of the treatment received.…
The second-order dependence structure of purely nondeterministic stationary process is described by the coefficients of the famous Wold representation. These coefficients can be obtained by factorizing the spectral density of the process. This relation together with some spectral density estimator is used in order to obtain consistent estimators of these coefficients. A spectral density-driven bootstrap for time series is then developed which uses the entire sequence of estimated MA coefficients together with appropriately generated pseudo innovations in order to obtain a bootstrap pseudo time…
In this paper, we consider the time-inhomogeneous nonlinear time series regression for a general class of locally stationary time series. On one hand, we propose sieve nonparametric estimators for the time-varying regression functions which can achieve the min-max optimal rate. On the other hand, we develop a unified simultaneous inferential theory which can be used to conduct both structural and exact form testings on the functions. Our proposed statistics are powerful even under locally weak alternatives. We also propose a multiplier bootstrapping procedure for practical implementation. Our …
In unit root testing, a piecewise locally stationary process is adopted to accommodate nonstationary errors that can have both smooth and abrupt changes in second- or higher-order properties. Under this framework, the limiting null distributions of the conventional unit root test statistics are derived and shown to contain a number of unknown parameters. To circumvent the difficulty of direct consistent estimation, we propose to use the dependent wild bootstrap to approximate the non-pivotal limiting null distributions and provide a rigorous theoretical justification for bootstrap consistency.…
When people evaluate the performance of a diagnostic test, it is important to control both True Positive Rate (TPR) and False Positive Rate (FPR). In the literature, most researchers propose the partial area under the ROC curve (pAUC) with restrictions on FPR to assess a binary classification system, which is named as FPR pAUC. It could be artificially designed to measure the area controlled by TPR and FPR, but is often misleading conceptually and practically. A new and intuitive method, named two-way pAUC, is provided in this paper, which focuses directly on the partial area under the ROC cur…
For testing hypothesis on the covariance operator of functional time series, we suggest to use the full functional information and to avoid dimension reduction techniques. The limit distribution follows from the central limit theorem of the weak convergence of the partial sum process in general Hilbert space applied to the product space. In order to obtain critical values for tests, we generalize bootstrap results from the independent to the dependent case. This results can be applied to covariance operators, autocovariance operators and cross covariance operators. We discuss one sample and ch…

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) can be viewed as nonlinear sieves that can approximate complex functions of high dimensional variables more effectively than linear sieves. We investigate the performance of various ANNs in nonparametric instrumental variables (NPIV) models of moderately high dimensional covariates that are relevant to empirical economics. We present two efficient procedures for estimation and inference on a weighted average derivative (WAD): an orthogonalized plug-in with optimally-weighted sieve minimum distance (OP-OSMD) procedure and a sieve efficient score (ES) procedure.…
