The self-organization in a multi-ion plasma composed of electrons and two species of positively charged ions is investigated. It is shown that when canonical vorticities and velocities of all the plasma fluids are aligned, the magnetic field self-organizes to Quadruple Beltrami state (superposition of four Beltrami fields). The self-organized magnetic and velocity fields strongly depend on the relative strengths of the generalized vorticities, flows, inertia and densities of the plasma species. Thus, it is possible to generate a wide variety of multiscale magnetic field and flow structures. It is also shown that relaxed magnetic fields and velocities can vary on vastly different length scales simultaneously and are coupled together through singular perturbation generated by Hall effect. In this multi Beltrami self-organized states, then, the dynamo mechanism emerges naturally. The scale separation also suggests the heating of the plasma through a dissipative process. The work could be useful to study the dynamics and morphology of the multiscale magnetic field configurations in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas.
The nonlinear propagation of dust-acoustic (DA) waves in a magnetized dusty plasma with a pair of trapped ions is investigated. Starting from a set of hydrodynamic equations for massive dust fluids as well as kinetic Vlasov equations for ions, and applying the reductive perturbation technique, a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-like equation with a complex coefficient of nonlinearity is derived, which governs the evolution of small-amplitude DA waves in plasmas. The complex coefficient arises due to vortex-like distributions of both positive and negative ions. An analytical as well as numerical solutio…
Electrostatic Gravitational or Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in an inhomogeneous magnetized multi-ions plasma with some fraction of quantum mechanical electrons. The effect of Bohm potential, temperature degeneracy and magnetic field are carried out. A generalized dispersion relation is deduced under the drift approximation. The presence of negative ions with their different streaming velocities make the dispersion relation a cubic equation. Different roots of both real and imaginary parts of the RT mode are studied by using the Cardano method of solving the cubic equation. The growth rates…
The theory of low-frequency (in comparison with the ion cyclotron frequency), long wavelength, electrostatic drift ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) is studied in a nonuniform rotating magnetoplasma with two temperature superthermal electrons. In the linear limit, the coupling of IAWs and drift waves by the density inhomogeneity is shown to produce a new wave mode which typically depends on the density gradient, the rotational frequency and the spectral indexes of superthermal electrons. In the nonlinear regime, an evolution equation for the drift IAWs is derived by the dispersion approach, and using …
In this paper, we extend the multiscale approach developed in [Abel et. al., Rep. Prog. Phys., submitted] by exploiting the scale separation between ions and the electrons. The gyrokinetic equation is expanded in powers of the electron to ion mass ratio, which provides a rigorous method for deriving the reduced electron model. We prove that ion-scale electromagnetic turbulence cannot change the magnetic topology, and argue that to lowest order the magnetic field lies on fluctuating flux surfaces. These flux surfaces are used to construct magnetic coordinates, and in these coordinates a closed …
The theoretical description of complex (dusty) plasmas requires multiscale concepts that adequately incorporate the correlated interplay of streaming electrons and ions, neutrals, and dust grains. Knowing the effective dust-dust interaction, the multiscale problem can be effectively reduced to a one-component plasma model of the dust subsystem. The goal of the present publication is a systematic evaluation of the electrostatic potential distribution around a dust grain in the presence of a streaming plasma environment by means of two complementary approaches: (i) a high precision computation o…
Processes driven by unsteady reconnection can efficiently accelerate particles in many astrophysical plasmas. An example are the reconnection jet fronts in an outflow region. We present evidence of suprathermal ion acceleration between two consecutive reconnection jet fronts observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the terrestrial magnetotail. An earthward propagating jet is approached by a second faster jet. Between the jets, the thermal ions are mostly perpendicular to magnetic field, are trapped and are gradually accelerated in the parallel direction up to 150 keV. Observations …
We present analysis of more than one hundred large-amplitude bipolar electrostatic structures in a quasi-perpendicular supercritical Earth's bow shock crossing, measured by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft. The occurrence of the bipolar structures is shown to be tightly correlated with magnetic field gradients in the shock transition region. The bipolar structures have negative electrostatic potentials and spatial scales of a few Debye lengths. The bipolar structures propagate highly oblique to the shock normal with velocities (in the plasma rest frame) of the order of the ion-acoustic…
Ion cyclotron resonance is one of the fundamental energy conversion processes through field-particle interaction in collisionless plasmas. However, the key evidence for ion cyclotron resonance (i.e., the coherence between electromagnetic fields and the ion phase space density) and the resulting damping of ion cyclotron waves (ICWs) has not yet been directly observed. Investigating the high-quality measurements of space plasmas by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellites, we find that both the wave electromagnetic field vectors and the bulk velocity of the disturbed ion velocity distribut…
