This paper presents the open-source stochastic model predictive control framework GRAMPC-S for nonlinear uncertain systems with chance constraints. It provides several uncertainty propagation methods to predict stochastic moments of the system state and can consider unknown parts of the system dynamics using Gaussian process regression. These methods are used to reformulate a stochastic MPC formulation as a deterministic one that is solved with GRAMPC. The performance of the presented framework is evaluated using examples from a wide range of technical areas. The experimental evaluation shows that GRAMPC-S can be used in practice for the control of nonlinear uncertain systems with sampling times in the millisecond range.
The modular open-source framework GRAMPC-D for model predictive control of distributed systems is presented in this paper. The modular concept allows to solve optimal control problems (OCP) in a centralized and distributed fashion using the same problem description. It is tailored to computational efficiency with the focus on embedded hardware. The distributed solution is based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and uses the concept of neighbor approximation to enhance convergence speed. The presented framework can be accessed through Cpp and Python and also supports plu…
To be able to measure relevant data for transport infrastructure monitoring and to obtain maintenance indicators in a crowd sensing-based fashion, a set of requirements (both from hardware and software points of view) needs to be satisfied. Heterogeneity of smartphones and various uncertainties associated with the mainstream \textit{off-the-shelf} hardware combined with the fact that inexperienced participants will take an active part in the data collection process necessitates that the system accounts for dynamicity, uncertainty, unreliability, and heterogeneity of the environment, participan…

We introduce MuJoCo MPC (MJPC), an open-source, interactive application and software framework for real-time predictive control, based on MuJoCo physics. MJPC allows the user to easily author and solve complex robotics tasks, and currently supports three shooting-based planners: derivative-based iLQG and Gradient Descent, and a simple derivative-free method we call Predictive Sampling. Predictive Sampling was designed as an elementary baseline, mostly for its pedagogical value, but turned out to be surprisingly competitive with the more established algorithms. This work does not present algori…
To effectively control large-scale distributed systems online, model predictive control (MPC) has to swiftly solve the underlying high-dimensional optimization. There are multiple techniques applied to accelerate the solving process in the literature, mainly attributed to software-based algorithmic advancements and hardware-assisted computation enhancements. However, those methods focus on arithmetic accelerations and overlook the benefits of the underlying system's structure. In particular, the existing decoupled software-hardware algorithm design that naively parallelizes the arithmetic oper…
This paper presents a new Lyapunov-based nonlinear model predictive controller (LNMPC) for the attitude control problem of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which is essential for their functioning operation. The controller is designed based on a quadratic cost function integrating UAV dynamics and system constraints. An additional contraction constraint is then introduced to ensure closed-loop system stability. That constraint is fulfilled via a Lyapunov function derived from a sliding mode controller (SMC). The feasibility and stability of the LNMPC are finally proved. Simulation and comparis…
Tight performance specifications in combination with operational constraints make model predictive control (MPC) the method of choice in various industries. As the performance of an MPC controller depends on a sufficiently accurate objective and prediction model of the process, a significant effort in the MPC design procedure is dedicated to modeling and identification. Driven by the increasing amount of available system data and advances in the field of machine learning, data-driven MPC techniques have been developed to facilitate the MPC controller design. While these methods are able to lev…
In this letter, an accelerated quadratic programming (QP) algorithm is proposed based on the proximal gradient method. The algorithm can achieve convergence rate $O(1/p^α)$, where $p$ is the iteration number and $α$ is the given positive integer. The proposed algorithm improves the convergence rate of existing algorithms that achieve $O(1/p^{2})$. The key idea is that iterative parameters are selected from a group of specific high order polynomial equations. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed on the randomly generated model predictive control (MPC) optimization problems. The…

The 3rd Japan Automotive AI Challenge was an international online autonomous racing challenge where 164 teams competed in December 2021. This paper outlines the winning strategy to this competition, and the advantages and challenges of using the Autoware.Auto open source autonomous driving platform for multi-agent racing. Our winning approach includes a lane-switching opponent overtaking strategy, a global raceline optimization, and the integration of various tools from Autoware.Auto including a Model-Predictive Controller. We describe the use of perception, planning and control modules for hi…
This paper proposes a novel online motion planning approach to robot navigation based on nonlinear model predictive control. Common approaches rely on pure Euclidean optimization parameters. In robot navigation, however, state spaces often include rotational components which span over non-Euclidean rotation groups. The proposed approach applies nonlinear increment and difference operators in the entire optimization scheme to explicitly consider these groups. Realizations include but are not limited to quadratic form and time-optimal objectives. A complex parking scenario for the kinematic bicy…
