Using Quantum Computers to solve problems in Recommender Systems that classical computers cannot address is a worthwhile research topic. In this paper, we use Quantum Annealers to address the feature selection problem in recommendation algorithms. This feature selection problem is a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization(QUBO) problem. By incorporating Counterfactual Analysis, we significantly improve the performance of the item-based KNN recommendation algorithm compared to using pure Mutual Information. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that the use of Counterfactual Analysis holds great promise for addressing such problems.

Feature quality has an impactful effect on recommendation performance. Thereby, feature selection is a critical process in developing deep learning-based recommender systems. Most existing deep recommender systems, however, focus on designing sophisticated neural networks, while neglecting the feature selection process. Typically, they just feed all possible features into their proposed deep architectures, or select important features manually by human experts. The former leads to non-trivial embedding parameters and extra inference time, while the latter requires plenty of expert knowledge an…

Click-through rate (CTR) prediction, whose goal is to predict the probability of the user to click on an item, has become increasingly significant in the recommender systems. Recently, some deep learning models with the ability to automatically extract the user interest from his/her behaviors have achieved great success. In these work, the attention mechanism is used to select the user interested items in historical behaviors, improving the performance of the CTR predictor. Normally, these attentive modules can be jointly trained with the base predictor by using gradient descents. In this pape…

Recommendation algorithms perform differently if the users, recommendation contexts, applications, and user interfaces vary even slightly. It is similarly observed in other fields, such as combinatorial problem solving, that algorithms perform differently for each instance presented. In those fields, meta-learning is successfully used to predict an optimal algorithm for each instance, to improve overall system performance. Per-instance algorithm selection has thus far been unsuccessful for recommender systems. In this paper we propose a per-instance meta-learner that clusters data instances an…

Session-based Recommender Systems (SRSs) have been actively developed to recommend the next item of an anonymous short item sequence (i.e., session). Unlike sequence-aware recommender systems where the whole interaction sequence of each user can be used to model both the short-term interest and the general interest of the user, the absence of user-dependent information in SRSs makes it difficult to directly derive the user's general interest from data. Therefore, existing SRSs have focused on how to effectively model the information about short-term interest within the sessions, but they are i…

Extracting demographic features from hidden factors is an innovative concept that provides multiple and relevant applications. The matrix factorization model generates factors which do not incorporate semantic knowledge. This paper provides a deep learning-based method: DeepUnHide, able to extract demographic information from the users and items factors in collaborative filtering recommender systems. The core of the proposed method is the gradient-based localization used in the image processing literature to highlight the representative areas of each classification class. Validation experiment…
Datasets for training recommender systems are often subject to distribution shift induced by users' and recommenders' selection biases. In this paper, we study the impact of selection bias on datasets with different quantization. We then leverage two differently quantized datasets from different source distributions to mitigate distribution shift by applying the inverse probability scoring method from causal inference. Empirically, our approach gains significant performance improvement over single-dataset methods and alternative ways of combining two datasets.

The promise of quantum computing to open new unexplored possibilities in several scientific fields has been long discussed, but until recently the lack of a functional quantum computer has confined this discussion mostly to theoretical algorithmic papers. It was only in the last few years that small but functional quantum computers have become available to the broader research community. One paradigm in particular, quantum annealing, can be used to sample optimal solutions for a number of NP-hard optimization problems represented with classical operations research tools, providing an easy acce…
We introduce Auto-Surprise, an Automated Recommender System library. Auto-Surprise is an extension of the Surprise recommender system library and eases the algorithm selection and configuration process. Compared to out-of-the-box Surprise library, Auto-Surprise performs better when evaluated with MovieLens, Book Crossing and Jester Datasets. It may also result in the selection of an algorithm with significantly lower runtime. Compared to Surprise's grid search, Auto-Surprise performs equally well or slightly better in terms of RMSE, and is notably faster in finding the optimum hyperparameters.

DLib进行A/B测试。
Selecting the optimal recommender via online exploration-exploitation is catching increasing attention where the traditional A/B testing can be slow and costly, and offline evaluations are prone to the bias of history data. Finding the optimal online experiment is nontrivial since both the users and displayed recommendations carry contextual features that are informative to the reward. While the problem can be formalized via the lens of multi-armed bandits, the existing solutions are found less satisfactorily because the general methodologies do not account for the case-specific structures, pa…
Regularization is a popular technique to solve the overfitting problem of machine learning algorithms. Most regularization technique relies on parameter selection of the regularization coefficient. Plug-in method and cross-validation approach are two most common parameter selection approaches for regression methods such as Ridge Regression, Lasso Regression and Kernel Regression. Matrix factorization based recommendation system also has heavy reliance on the regularization technique. Most people select a single scalar value to regularize the user feature vector and item feature vector independ…

Collaborative filtering models generally perform better than content-based filtering models and do not require careful feature engineering. However, in the cold-start scenario collaborative information may be scarce or even unavailable, whereas the content information may be abundant, but also noisy and expensive to acquire. Thus, selection of particular features that improve cold-start recommendations becomes an important and non-trivial task. In the recent approach by Nembrini et al., the feature selection is driven by the correlational compatibility between collaborative and content-based m…
Collaborative Filtering (CF) has become the standard approach to solve recommendation systems (RS) problems. Collaborative Filtering algorithms try to make predictions about interests of a user by collecting the personal interests from multiple users. There are multiple CF algorithms, each one of them with its own biases. It is the Machine Learning practitioner that has to choose the best algorithm for each task beforehand. In Recommender Systems, different algorithms have different performance for different users within the same dataset. Meta Learning (MtL) has been used to choose the best al…
Effective methodologies for evaluating recommender systems are critical, so that such systems can be compared in a sound manner. A commonly overlooked aspect of recommender system evaluation is the selection of the data splitting strategy. In this paper, we both show that there is no standard splitting strategy and that the selection of splitting strategy can have a strong impact on the ranking of recommender systems. In particular, we perform experiments comparing three common splitting strategies, examining their impact over seven state-of-the-art recommendation models for two datasets. Our …
Recommender systems play a significant role in information filtering and have been utilized in different scenarios, such as e-commerce and social media. With the prosperity of deep learning, deep recommender systems show superior performance by capturing non-linear information and item-user relationships. However, the design of deep recommender systems heavily relies on human experiences and expert knowledge. To tackle this problem, Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) is introduced to automatically search for the proper candidates for different parts of deep recommender systems. This survey pe…

We introduce the payload optimization method for federated recommender systems (FRS). In federated learning (FL), the global model payload that is moved between the server and users depends on the number of items to recommend. The model payload grows when there is an increasing number of items. This becomes challenging for an FRS if it is running in production mode. To tackle the payload challenge, we formulated a multi-arm bandit solution that selected part of the global model and transmitted it to all users. The selection process was guided by a novel reward function suitable for FL systems.…
Latent factor models are the driving forces of the state-of-the-art recommender systems, with an important insight of vectorizing raw input features into dense embeddings. The dimensions of different feature embeddings are often set to a same value empirically, which limits the predictive performance of latent factor models. Existing works have proposed heuristic or reinforcement learning-based methods to search for mixed feature embedding dimensions. For efficiency concern, these methods typically choose embedding dimensions from a restricted set of candidate dimensions. However, this restric…
