This article presents two novel algorithms for generating random increasing trees. The first algorithm efficiently generates strictly increasing binary trees using an ad hoc method. The second algorithm improves the recursive method for weighted strictly increasing unary-binary increasing trees, optimizing randomness usage.
We present the zipper tree, an $O(\log \log n)$-competitive online binary search tree that performs each access in $O(\log n)$ worst-case time. This shows that for binary search trees, optimal worst-case access time and near-optimal amortized access time can be guaranteed simultaneously.
In this paper, we provide new insights and analysis for the two elementary tree-based data structures - the AVL tree and binary heap. We presented two simple properties that gives a more direct way of relating the size of an AVL tree and the Fibonacci recurrence to establish the AVL tree's logarithmic height. We then give a potential function-based analysis of the bottom-up heap construction to get a simpler and tight bound for its worst-case running-time.
We suggest a new non-recursive algorithm for constructing a binary search tree given an array of numbers. The algorithm has $O(N)$ time and $O(1)$ memory complexity if the given array of $N$ numbers is sorted. The resulting tree is of minimal height and can be transformed to a complete binary search tree (retaining minimal height) with $O(\log N)$ time and $O(1)$ memory. The algorithm allows simple and effective parallelization.
We present a new uniform random sampler for binary trees with $n$ internal nodes consuming $2n + Θ(\log(n)^2)$ random bits on average. This makes it quasi-optimal and out-performs the classical Remy algorithm. We also present a sampler for unary-binary trees with $n$ nodes taking $Θ(n)$ random bits on average. Both are the first linear-time algorithms to be optimal up to a constant.
Best match graphs (BMG) are a key intermediate in graph-based orthology detection and contain a large amount of information on the gene tree. We provide a near-cubic algorithm to determine whether a BMG is binary-explainable, i.e., whether it can be explained by a fully resolved gene tree and, if so, to construct such a tree. A compacted binary tree is a directed acyclic graph encoding a binary tree in which common subtrees are factored and shared, such that they are represented only once. We show that the number of compacted binary trees of size $n$ grows asymptotically like $$Θ\left( n! \, 4^n e^{3a_1n^{1/3}} n^{3/4} \right),$$ where $a_1\approx-2.338$ is the largest root of the Airy function. Between the leaves and the nodes of a complete binary tree, a separate parent-child-sister hierarchy is employed independent of the parent-child-sister hierarchy used for the rest of the tree. Two different versions of such a local hierarchy are introduced. The result of the first proposed hierarchy is a faster and smaller footprint, while the second one provides the size variation functionality without a significant computational overhead. This novel approach brings considerable memory gains and performance boosts to the complete binary tree based algorithms.

Rooted phylogenetic networks are used to describe evolutionary histories that contain non-treelike evolutionary events such as hybridization and horizontal gene transfer. Binary jumbled pattern matching asks to preprocess a binary string $S$ in order to answer queries $(i,j)$ which ask for a substring of $S$ that is of length $i$ and has exactly $j$ 1-bits. This problem naturally generalizes to vertex-labeled trees and graphs by replacing "substring" with "connected subgraph". This paper describes the shortest path problem in weighted graphs and examines the differences in efficiency that occur when using Dijkstra's algorithm with a Fibonacci heap, binary heap, and self-balancing binary tree. Using C++ implementations of these algorithm variants, we find that the fastest method is not always the one that has the lowest asymptotic complexity. Reasons for this are discussed and backed with empirical evidence.

We present a general method for de-amortizing essentially any Binary Search Tree (BST) algorithm. In particular, by transforming Splay Trees, our method produces a BST that has the same asymptotic cost as Splay Trees on any access sequence while performing each search in O(log n) worst case time. We observe that a standard transformation between \emph{ordinal} trees (arbitrary rooted trees with ordered children) and binary trees leads to interesting succinct binary tree representations. There are four symmetric versions of these transformations. Via these transformations we get four succinct representations of $n$-node binary trees that use $2n + n/(\log n)^{O(1)}$ bits and support (among other operations) navigation, inorder numbering, one of pre- or post-order numbering, subtree size and lowest common ancestor (LCA) queries. Assuming Zipf's Law to be accurate, we show that existing techniques for partially optimizing binary trees produce results that are approximately 10% worse than true optimal. We present a new approximate optimization technique that runs in O(n log n) time and produces trees approximately 1% worse than optimal. The running time is comparable to that of the Garsia-Wachs algorithm but the technique can be applied to the more useful case where the node being searched for is expected to be contained in the tree as opposed to outside of it.
Efficient implementations of sets and maps (dictionaries) are important in computer science, and balanced binary search trees are the basis of the best practical implementations.
