We a present and analyze rpCholesky-QR, a randomized preconditioned Cholesky-QR algorithm for computing the thin QR factorization of real mxn matrices with rank n. rpCholesky-QR has a low orthogonalization error, a residual on the order of machine precision, and does not break down for highly singular matrices. We derive rigorous and interpretable two-norm perturbation bounds for rpCholesky-QR that require a minimum of assumptions. Numerical experiments corroborate the accuracy of rpCholesky-QR for preconditioners sampled from as few as 3n rows, and illustrate that the two-norm deviation from orthonormality increases with only the condition number of the preconditioned matrix, rather than its square -- even if the original matrix is numerically singular.
CholeskyQR is a simple and fast QR decomposition via Cholesky decomposition, while it has been considered highly sensitive to the condition number. In this paper, we provide a randomized preconditioner framework for CholeskyQR algorithm. Under this framework, two methods (randomized LU-CholeskyQR and randomized QR-CholeskyQR) are proposed and discussed. We prove the proposed preconditioners can effectively reduce the condition number, which is also demonstrated by numerical tests. Abundant numerical tests indicate our methods are more stable and faster than all the existing algorithms and have…
This article proposes and analyzes several variants of the randomized Cholesky QR factorization of a matrix $X$. Instead of computing the R factor from $X^T X$, as is done by standard methods, we obtain it from a small, efficiently computable random sketch of $X$, thus saving computational cost and improving numerical stability. The proposed direct variant of the randomized Cholesky QR requires only half the flops and the same communication cost as the classical Cholesky QR. At the same time, it is more robust since it is guaranteed to be stable whenever the input matrix is numerically full-ra…
We introduce a randomized algorithm, namely RCHOL, to construct an approximate Cholesky factorization for a given Laplacian matrix (a.k.a., graph Laplacian). From a graph perspective, the exact Cholesky factorization introduces a clique in the underlying graph after eliminating a row/column. By randomization, RCHOL only retains a sparse subset of the edges in the clique using a random sampling developed by Spielman and Kyng. We prove RCHOL is breakdown-free and apply it to solving large sparse linear systems with symmetric diagonally dominant matrices. In addition, we parallelize RCHOL based o…

This paper introduces the Nyström PCG algorithm for solving a symmetric positive-definite linear system. The algorithm applies the randomized Nyström method to form a low-rank approximation of the matrix, which leads to an efficient preconditioner that can be deployed with the conjugate gradient algorithm. Theoretical analysis shows that preconditioned system has constant condition number as soon as the rank of the approximation is comparable with the number of effective degrees of freedom in the matrix. The paper also develops adaptive methods that provably achieve similar performance without…

We describe two algorithms to efficiently solve regularized linear least squares systems based on sketching. The algorithms compute preconditioners for $\min \|Ax-b\|^2_2 + λ\|x\|^2_2$, where $A\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times n}$ and $λ>0$ is a regularization parameter, such that LSQR converges in $\mathcal{O}(\log(1/ε))$ iterations for $ε$ accuracy. We focus on the context where the optimal regularization parameter is unknown, and the system must be solved for a number of parameters $λ$. Our algorithms are applicable in both the underdetermined $m\ll n$ and the overdetermined $m\gg n$ setting. Firstly…
