The 4D eigenvector 1 (E1) sequence has emerged as a powerful tool for organizing the observational and physical characteristics of type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of the metallicity of the broad line region gas, incorporating both new data and previously published findings, to assess the presence of any trend along the sequence. We perform a multi-component analysis on the strongest UV and optical emission lines, compute $\sim 10$ diagnostic ratios, and compare them with the prediction of CLOUDY photoionization simulations, identifying a photoionization solution closest to the data. Our investigation reveals a consistent pattern along the optical plane of the E1. We observe a systematic progression in metallicity, ranging from sub-solar values to metallicity levels several times higher than solar values. These findings underscore the role of metallicity as a fundamental correlate of the 4DE1/main sequence. Extreme values of metallicity, at least several tens solar, are confirmed in low-$z$ AGNs radiating at a high Eddington ratio, although the origin of the extreme enrichment remains open to debate.
The idea that dark matter can be made of intermediate-mass primordial black holes in the $10M_\odot \lesssim M \lesssim 200M_\odot$ range has recently been reconsidered, particularly in the light of the detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO experiment. The existence of even a small fraction of dark matter in black holes should nevertheless result in noticeable quasar gravitational microlensing. Quasar microlensing is sensitive to any type of compact objects in the lens galaxy, to their abundance, and to their mass. We have analyzed optical and X-ray microlensing data from 24 gravitation…
We compare the metallicities in high-redshift quasars to the star formation rates (SFR) in their host galaxies using measurements of broad emission lines and far-infrared (FIR) luminosities. The FIR emission indicates the level of ongoing massive starbursts in the galaxy, whereas the abundance of metals in the gas surrounding the quasar indicates the amount of star formation which occurred before the visible quasar phase began. The results of this study can be used to constrain the late stages of starburst-quasar evolution. We detect high metallicities throughout the sample, up to several time…
A small fraction of quasars show an unusually high nitrogen-to-carbon ratio (N/C) in their spectra. These "nitrogen-rich" (N-rich) quasars are a long-standing puzzle because their interstellar medium implies stellar populations with abnormally high metallicities. It has recently been proposed that N-rich quasars may result from tidal disruption events (TDEs) of stars by supermassive black holes. The rapid enhancement of nitrogen and the depletion of carbon due to the carbon--nitrogen--oxygen cycle in supersolar mass stars could naturally produce high N/C. However, the TDE hypothesis predicts t…
To investigate the chemical abundance of broad-line region clouds in quasars at high redshifts, we performed near-infrared spectroscopy of six luminous quasars at z ~ 2.7 with the WINERED spectrograph mounted on the New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the La Silla Observatory, Chile. The measured Fe II/Mg II flux ratios nearly matched with the published data for 0.7 < z < 1.6, suggesting that there is no evolution over a long period of cosmic time, which is consistent with previous studies. To derive the chemical abundances from the measured equivalent widths (EWs), their dependence on nonabunda…
We present a detailed analysis of chemical abundances in a sub-damped Lyman alpha absorber at z=1.839 towards the quasar B1101-26, based on a very-high-resolution (R ~ 75,000) and high-signal-to-noise (S/N >100) spectrum observed with the UV Visual Echelle spectrograph (UVES) installed on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The absorption line profiles are resolved into a maximum of eleven velocity components spanning a rest-frame velocity range of 200 km/s. Detected ions include CII, CIV, NII, OI, MgI, MgII, AlII, AlIII, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, FeII, and possibly SII. The total neutral hydrogen co…
We present spectra of six luminous quasars at z ~ 2, covering rest wavelengths 1600-3200 A. The fluxes of the UV Fe II emission lines and Mg II 2798 doublet, the line widths of Mg II, and the 3000 A luminosity were obtained from the spectra. These quantities were compared with those of low-redshift quasars at z = 0.06 - 0.55 studied by Tsuzuki et al. In a plot of the Fe II(UV)/Mg II flux ratio as a function of the cental black hole mass, Fe II(UV)/Mg II in our z ~ 2 quasars is systematically greater than in the low-redshift quasars. We confermed that luminosity is not responsible for this exce…

We present an analysis of Mg II $\lambda2798$ and Fe II UV emission lines for archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars to explore diagnostics of the magnesium-to-iron abundance ratio in a broad-line region cloud. Our sample consists of 17,432 quasars selected from the SDSS Data Release 7 with a redshift range of $0.72 < z < 1.63$. A strong anticorrelation between Mg II equivalent width (EW) and the Eddington ratio is found, while only a weak positive correlation is found between Fe II EW and the Eddington ratio. To investigate the origin of these differing behaviors of Mg II and Fe II …
We study the relation between the metallicity of quasar broad line region (BLR) and black hole (BH) mass ($10^{7.5}M_{\odot} \sim 10^{10}M_{\odot}$) and quasar bolometric luminosity ($10^{44.6}erg/s \sim 10^{48} erg/s$) using a sample of $\sim$130,000 quasars at $2.25\leq z\leq 5.25$ from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12 (DR12). We generate composite spectra by stacking individual spectra in the same BH mass (bolometric luminosity) and redshift bins and then estimate the metallicity of quasar BLR using metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios based on the photoioniz…
We analyze relative abundances and ionization conditions in a strong absorption system at z=6.84, seen in the spectrum of the z=7.54 background quasar ULAS J134208.10+092838.61. Singly ionized C, Si, Fe, Mg, and Al measurements are consistent with a warm neutral medium that is metal-poor but not chemically pristine. Firm non-detections of C IV and Si IV imply that any warm ionized phase of the IGM or CGM has not yet been enriched past the ultra-metal-poor regime (<0.001Z_{solar}), unlike lower redshift DLAs where these lines are nearly ubiquitous. Relative abundances of the heavy elements 794 …
In this work, we study argon abundances in the interstellar medium of high-redshift galaxies (2<z(abs)<4.2) detected as Damped Lya absorbers (DLA) in the spectra of background quasars. We use high-resolution quasar spectra obtained from the ESO-UVES advanced data products (EUADP) database. We present 3 new measurements and 5 upper limits of ArI. We further compiled DLAs/sub-DLA data from the literature with measurements available of argon and alpha-capture elements (S or Si), making up a total of 37 systems, i.e. the largest DLA argon sample investigated so far. We confirm that argon is genera…
We present an analysis of seven strongly gravitationally lensed quasars and the corresponding constraints on the properties of dark matter. Our results are derived by modelling the lensed image positions and flux-ratios using a combination of smooth macro models and a population of low-mass haloes within the mass range 10^6 to 10^9 Msun. Our lens models explicitly include higher-order complexity in the form of stellar discs and luminous satellites, as well as low-mass haloes located along the observed lines of sight for the first time. Assuming a Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology, we infer an a…
The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across q…
A galaxy's metallicity provides a record of star formation, gas accretion, and gas outflow, and is therefore one of the most informative measurements that can be made at high redshift. It is also one of the most difficult. I review methods of determining chemical abundances in distant star-forming galaxies, and summarize results for galaxies at 1<z<3. I then focus on the mass-metallicity relation, its evolution with redshift, and its uses in constraining inflows and outflows of gas, and conclude with a brief discussion of future prospects for metallicity measurements at high redshift.
We present ten metallicity measurements for quasar absorbers near $z=1.2$ that were selected for having unusually significant ZnII absorption in their SDSS spectra. Follow-up UV space spectroscopy of the Ly$α$ region shows that all ten have damped Ly$α$ (DLA) absorption, corresponding to neutral hydrogen column densities in the range $2.4\times 10^{20}$ $\le$ N(HI) $\le$ $2.5\times 10^{21}$ atoms cm$^{-2}$, and indicating that the gas is very optically thick and essentially neutral. The sample is a very small subset of systems compiled by searching the University of Pittsburgh catalog of $\app…
The search for Population III (Pop III) stars has fascinated and eluded astrophysicists for decades. One promising place for capturing evidence of their presence must be high-redshift objects; signatures should be recorded in their characteristic chemical abundances. We deduce the Fe and Mg abundances of the broad-line region (BLR) from the intensities of ultraviolet Mg II and Fe II emission lines in the near-infrared spectrum of UKIDSS Large Area Survey (ULAS) J1342+0928 at $z = 7.54$, by advancing our novel flux-to-abundance conversion method developed for $z\sim 1$ quasars. We find that the…
We present rest-frame optical spectra of 12 nitrogen-loud quasars at z ~ 2.2, whose rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra show strong nitrogen broad emission lines. To investigate their narrow-line region (NLR) metallicities, we measure the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII]5007 emission line: if the NLR metallicity is remarkably high as suggested by strong UV nitrogen lines, the [OIII]5007 line flux should be very week due to the low equilibrium temperature of the ionized gas owing to significant metal cooling. In the result, we found that our spectra show moderate EW of the [OIII]5007 line si…

We conducted a long-slit spectrophotometry analysis to obtain the chemical abundances of seven metal-poor HII regions in three galaxies: UM 160, UM 420, and TOL 0513-393. The data have been taken with the Focal Reducer Low Dispersion Spectrograph 1 (FORS1) at the 8.2-m Very Large Telescope. We derived the physical conditions and the chemical abundances of N, O, Ne, S, Ar, and Cl. We also performed a detailed analysis that involves abundance determinations using the $t^2$ formalism. Based on HeI recombination line intensity ratios, together with the Helio14 code, we derived the abundance of He.…
Open clusters are key chemical and age tracers of Milky Way evolution. While open clusters provide significant constraints on galaxy evolution, their use has been limited due to discrepancies in measuring abundances from different studies. We analyze medium resolution (R~19,000) CTIO/Hydra spectra of giant stars in 58 open clusters using The Cannon to determine [Fe/H], [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [O/Fe]. This work adds an additional 55 primarily southern hemisphere open clusters calibrated to the SDSS/APOGEE DR16 metallicity system. This uniform analysis is compared to previous studies [Fe/…
Recent observations of quasars show high line-flux ratios in their broad emission lines and the ratios appear to be independent of redshift up to $z \gtrsim 6$, which indicate that the broad-line regions of these early quasars are surprisingly metal-rich. Here, we revisit the chemical evolution of high-redshift quasars by adding a new ingredient, i.e., the neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) with outflows, on top of the conventional core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). In the presence of the chemical contribution from NDAFs with outflows, the total metal mass (i.e., the summation of the co…
Well studied Open Clusters (OCs) in the Solar neighbourhood are used as reference objects to test galactic and stellar theories. For that purpose their chemical composition needs to be known with a high level of confidence. The aims of this work are (1) to determine accurate and precise abundances of 22 chemical species (from Na to Eu) in the Hyades, Praesepe and Rupecht 147 using a large number of stars at different evolutionary states, (2) to evaluate the level of chemical homogeneity of these OCs, (3) to compare their chemical signatures. We gathered $\sim$800 high resolution and high S/N s…
We present a review about the relevance of the paper by Peimbert and Costero (1969), on the chemical abundance determinations of H II regions. We analize the observational evidence in favor of the presence of temperature variations inside gaseous nebulae. We make a brief mention of the methods used to estimate the contribution of the unobserved ions to the total chemical abundances.
We estimate chemical abundances and ionization parameters in the nuclear region of a sample of 143 galaxies from the Palomar Spectroscopic Survey, composed by Star-Forming Galaxies (87), Seyferts 2 (16) and LINERs (40) using the \textsc{Hii-Chi-mistry} code. We also study for each spectral type the correlation of the derived quantities with other different properties of the host galaxies, such as morphology, stellar mass, luminosity and mass of their Supermassive Black Holes. The results obtained for Star-Forming Galaxies are used to check the soundness of our methodology. Then, we replicate a…
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic events after the Big Bang and they have been observed up to very high redshift. By means of measures of chemical abundances now available for the galaxies hosting such events, thought to originate from the explosion of very powerful supernovae (Type Ib/c), we have the opportunity to study the nature of these host galaxies. The aim of this paper is to identify the hosts of Long GRBs (LGRBs) observed both at low and high redshift to see whether the hosts can be galaxies of the same type observed at different cosmic epochs. We adopt detailed chemical …
We use integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations from Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph-North (GMOS-N) to analyse the ionised gas in the principal star-forming region in the blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 1415+437. The IFS data enable us to map the weak auroral line [O III] $λ$4363 at a spatial scale of $\sim$6.5 pc across a region of $\sim$143 $\times$ 143 pc$^2$. This in turn allows us to use the robust direct T$_e$-method to map the ionic and elemental abundances of nitrogen (N) along with the alpha-elements, oxygen (O), neon (Ne), sulphur (S) and argon (Ar). We utilise these abundances…
Chemical tagging promises to use detailed abundance measurements to identify spatially separated stars that were in fact born together (in the same molecular cloud), long ago. This idea has not yielded much practical success, presumably because of the noise and incompleteness in chemical-abundance measurements. We have succeeded in substantially improving spectroscopic measurements with The Cannon, which has now delivered 15 individual abundances for ~100,000 stars observed as part of the APOGEE spectroscopic survey, with precisions around 0.04 dex. We test the chemical-tagging hypothesis by l…
Galactic disc chemical evolution models generally ignore azimuthal surface density variation that can introduce chemical abundance azimuthal gradients. Recent observations, however, have revealed chemical abundance changes with azimuth in the gas and stellar components of both the Milky Way and external galaxies. To quantify the effects of spiral arm density fluctuations on the azimuthal variations of the oxygen and iron abundances in disc galaxies. We develop a new 2D galactic disc chemical evolution model, capable of following not just radial but also azimuthal inhomogeneities. The density f…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has proved to be a powerful resource for understanding the physical properties and chemical composition of star-forming galaxies in the local universe. The SDSS population of active galactic nuclei (AGN) remains as of yet less explored in this capacity. To extend the rigorous study of \ion{H}{ii} regions in the SDSS to AGN, we adapt methods for computing direct-method chemical abundances for application to the narrow-line regions (NLR) of AGN. By accounting for triply-ionized oxygen, we are able to more completely estimate the total oxygen abundance. We find…
Studying the global evolution of spiral galaxies requires determining their overall chemical compositions. However, since spirals tend to possess gradients in their chemical compositions, determining their overall chemical abundances poses a challenge. In this study, the framework for a newly proposed method for determining the overall oxygen abundance of a disk is established. By separately integrating the absolute amounts of hydrogen and oxygen out to large radii, the cumulative oxygen abundance is shown to approach an asymptotic value. In this manner, a reliable account of the overall chemi…
In this paper, we study the formation and chemical evolution of the Milky Way disc with particular focus on the abundance patterns ([$α$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H]) at different Galactocentric distances, the present-time abundance gradients along the disc and the time evolution of abundance gradients. We consider the chemical evolution models for the Galactic disc developed by Grisoni et al. (2017) for the solar neighborhood, both the two-infall and the one-infall ones, and we extend our analysis to the other Galactocentric distances. In particular, we examine the processes which mainly influence the form…
We present chemical abundance measurements for seven stars with metallicities ranging from [Fe/H] = $-$3.3 to [Fe/H] = $-$2.4 in the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD), based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan-Clay Telescope. For three stars, we present detailed chemical abundances for the first time. Of those, two stars are newly discovered members of Tucana II and were selected as probable members from deep narrow band photometry of the Tucana II UFD taken with the SkyMapper telescope. This result demonstrates the potential for photomet…
In view of their nature, planetary nebulae have very short lifetimes, and the chemical abundances derived so far have a natural bias favoring younger objects. In this work, we report physical parameters and abundances for a sample of old PNe located in the galactic bulge, based on low dispersion spectroscopy secured at the SOAR telescope using the Goodman Spectrograph. The new data allow us to extend our database including older, weaker objects that are at the faint end of the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). The results show that the abundances of our sample are lower than those f…

I would like to review recent efforts of detailed chemical abundance measurements for field Milky Way halo stars. Thanks to the advent of wide-field spectroscopic surveys up to a several kpc from the Sun, large samples of field halo stars with detailed chemical measurements are continuously expanding. Combination of the chemical information and full six dimensional phase-space information is now recognized as a powerful tool to identify cosmological accretion events that have built a sizable fraction of the present-day stellar halo. Future observational prospects with wide-field spectroscopic …
Spectroscopic observations of 32 HII regions in the spiral galaxy NGC 3963 and the barred irregular galaxy NGC 7292 were carried out with the 2.5-m telescope of the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute using the Transient Double-beam Spectrograph with a dispersion of 1A/pixel and a spectral resolution of 3A. These observations were used to estimate the oxygen and nitrogen abundances and the electron temperatures in HII regions through modern strong-line methods. In general, the galaxies have oxygen and nitrogen abundances typical of stellar systems with similar…

The Open Cluster Chemical Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey aims to produce a comprehensive, uniform, infrared-based spectroscopic dataset for hundreds of open clusters, and to constrain key Galactic dynamical and chemical parameters from this sample. This second contribution from the OCCAM survey presents analysis of 259 member stars with [Fe/H] determinations in 19 open clusters, using Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14 (SDSS/DR14) data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and ESA Gaia. This analysis, which includes clusters with R_{GC} ranging f…
(Abridged) We present the abundance analysis of 12 PNe ionized by [WC]-type stars and wels obtained from high-resolution spectrophotometric data. Our main aims are to determine the chemical composition of the PNe and to study the behaviour of the abundance discrepancy problem (ADF) in this type of planetary nebulae. The detection of a large number of optical recombination lines (ORLs) and collisionally excited lines (CELs) from different ions were presented previously. Most of the ORLs were reported for the first time in these PNe. Ionic abundances were derived from the available CELs and ORLs…
We present the motivation, design and current status of the Open Cluster Chemical Abundances from Spanish Observatories survey (OCCASO). Using the high resolution spectroscopic facilities available at Spanish observatories, OCCASO will derive chemical abundances in a sample of 20 to 25 open clusters older than 0.5 Gyr. This sample will be used to study in detail the formation and evolution of the Galactic disc using open clusters as tracers.
RAVE is a spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way which collected more than 500,000 stellar spectra of nearby stars in the Galaxy. The RAVE consortium analysed these spectra to obtain radial velocities, stellar parameters and chemical abundances. These data, together with spatial and kinematic information like positions, proper motions, and distance estimations, make the RAVE database a rich source for galactic archaeology. I present recent investigations on the chemo-kinematic relations and chemical gradients in the Milky Way disk by using RAVE data and compare our results with the Besancon mod…
We present the first detailed chemical abundances for distant RR Lyrae stars members of the Virgo Stellar Stream (VSS), derived from X-Shooter medium-resolution spectra. Sixteen elements from carbon to barium have been measured in six VSS RR Lyrae stars, sampling all main nucleosynthetic channels. For the first time we will be able to compare in detail the chemical evolution of the VSS progenitor with those of Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (LG dSph) as well as the one of the smooth halo.
Planetary nebulae are the products of the evolution of low and intermediate mass stars. The chemical property studies of these objects give important information about the elemental abundances as He, O, Ne, Ar, S and their modifications associated with the evolution of the progenitor stars. The determination of accurate abundances in planetary nebulae is important from the perspective of the stellar evolution as well as the formation and chemical evolution of galaxies. Recently, new HeI emissivities and ionization correction factors (ICFs) were published in the literature. In this work, these …
Stellar migration is an important dynamical process in Galactic disk. Here we model the radial stellar migration in the Galactic disk with an analytical method, then add it to detailed Galactic chemical evolution model to study the influence of radial stellar migration on the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, especially for the abundance gradients. We found that the radial stellar migration in the Galactic disk can make the profile of the G-dwarf metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood taller and narrower, thus it becomes another solution to the "G-dwarf problem". It can also sca…
The recent Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) represents an unparalleled revolution in Galactic Archaeology, providing us with numerous radial velocities chemical abundances for millions of stars, with all-sky coverage. We present a new chemical evolution model for the Galactic disc components (high- and low- $α$ sequence stars) designed to reproduce the new abundance ratios provided by the GSP-spec module for the Gaia DR3 and also constrained by the detailed star formation histories for both the thick and thin disc stars inferred from previous Gaia releases. Sophisticated modeling based on previous Ga…
Reconstructing the chemical evolution of the Milky Way is crucial for understanding the formation of stars, planets, and galaxies throughout cosmic time. Different studies associated with element production in the early universe and how elements are incorporated into gas and stars are necessary to piece together how the elements evolved. These include establishing chemical abundance trends, as set by metal-poor stars, comparing nucleosynthesis yield predictions with stellar abundance data, and theoretical modeling of chemical evolution. To aid these studies, we have collected chemical abundanc…
Photoionized nebulae comprise basically HII regions and planetary nebulae, and their abundances give important clues on the nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution of their host galaxies. There is presently a large amount of data on these objects, especially for the elements He and N, which are strongly affected by the evolution of intermediate mass stars, as well as O, Ne, S, and Ar, which are essentially synthesized in stars with larger masses. The abundances of these elements in several systems in the Local Group are discussed on the basis of distance-independent correlations.
We present chemical abundance analyses of sodium, iron-peak and neutron-capture elements for 97 kinematically selected thick disk, inner halo and outer halo stars with metallicities -3.3<[Fe/H]<-0.5. The main aim of this study is to examine chemical similarities and differences among metal-poor stars belonging to these old Galactic components as a clue to determine their early chemodynamical evolution. In our previous paper, we obtained abundances of alpha elements by performing a one-dimensional LTE abundance analysis based on the high-resolution (R~50000) spectra obtained with the Subaru/HDS…
We examine the influence of the environment on the chemical abundances of late-type galaxies with masses of 10^9.1 M_sun - 10^11 M_sun using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS). We find that the environmental influence on galactic chemical abundances is strongest for galaxies with masses of 10^9.1 M_sun to 10^9.6 Msun. The galaxies in the densest environments may exceed the average oxygen abundances by about 0.05 dex (the median value of the overabundances for 101 galaxies in the densest environments) and show higher abundances in nitrogen by about 0.1. The abundance excess decreases …
Future and on-going infrared and radio observatories such as JWST, METIS or ALMA will increase the amount of rest-frame IR spectroscopic data for galaxies by several orders of magnitude. While studies of the chemical composition of the ISM based on optical observations have been widely spread over decades for SFG and, more recently, for AGN, similar studies need to be performed using IR data. This regime can be especially useful in the case of AGN given that it is less affected by temperature and dust extinction, traces higher ionic species and can also provide robust estimations of the chemic…
We investigate the discrepancy between oxygen abundance estimations for narrow-line regions (NLRs) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) type Seyfert 2 derived by using direct estimations of the electron temperature (Te-method) and those derived by using photoionization models. In view of this, observational emission-line ratios in the optical range (3000 < λ(Å) < 7000) of Seyfert 2 nuclei compiled from the literature were reproduced by detailed photoionization models built with the Cloudy code. We find that the derived discrepancies are mainly due to the inappropriate use of the relations between …
Context: Globular clusters (GCs) in the outer halo are important probes of the composition and origin of the Galactic stellar halo. Aims: We derive chemical element abundance ratios in red giants belonging to the remote (R~90 kpc) GC Pal 3 and compare our measurements to those for red giant stars in both inner and outer halo GCs. Methods: From high-resolution spectroscopy of four red giants, obtained with the Magellan/MIKE spectrograph at moderately high S/N, we derive chemical abundances for 25 alpha-, iron peak-, and neutron-capture elements. These abundance ratios are confirmed by co-adding…
The dispersion in chemical abundances provides a very strong constraint on the processes that drive the chemical enrichment of galaxies. Due to its proximity, the spiral galaxy M33 has been the focus of numerous chemical abundance surveys to study the chemical enrichment and dispersion in abundances over large spatial scales. The CHemical Abundances Of Spirals (CHAOS) project has observed $\sim$100 H II regions in M33 with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), producing the largest homogeneous sample of electron temperatures (T$_e$) and direct abundances in this galaxy. Our LBT observations pro…
We derive the first detailed chemical abundances of three star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), NGC1831 (436+/-22 Myr), NGC1856 (350+/-18 Myr) and [SL63]268 (1230+/-62 Myr) using integrated-light spectroscopic observations obtained with the Magellan Echelle spectrograph on Magellan Baade telescope. We derive [Fe/H], [Mg/Fe], [Ti/Fe], [Ca/Fe], [Ni/Fe], [Mn/Fe], [Cr/Fe] and [Na/Fe] for the three clusters. Overall, our results match the LMC abundances obtained in the literature as well as those predicted by detailed chemical evolution models. For clusters NGC1831 and NGC1856, the [Mg…
