In this work, we develop an optomechanical formalism for macroscopic quantum states in exciton-polariton systems with strong exciton-phonon interactions. We show that polariton optomechanical interactions induce dynamical backaction, resulting in dispersive and dissipative shifts in the complex vibrational response functions. Unlike conventional optomechanical systems, polariton optomechanics features high-dimensionality and phase-space confinement due to the dispersion relations of exciton-polaritons. Consequently, vibrational modes exhibit effective positive or negative mass depending on the detuning parameter, and are capable for the nonequilibrium vibrational Bose-Einstein condensation under the resonant conditions [arXiv:2309.08498]. We demonstrate the potential for vibrational control of polariton condensates at room temperature.
We make a semi-classical steady state analysis of the influence of mirror motion on the quantum phase transition for an optomechanical Dicke model in the thermodynamic limit. An additional external mechanical pump is shown to modify the critical value of atom-photon coupling needed to observe the quantum phase transition. We further show how to choose the mechanical pump frequency and cavity-laser detuning to produce extremely cold condensates. The present system can be used as a quantum device to measure weak forces.
We propose that the dispersion management of coherent atomic matter waves can be exploited to overcome quantum back-action in condensate-based optomechanical sensors. The effective mass of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate modulated by an optical lattice can become negative, resulting in a negative-frequency optomechanical oscillator, a negative environment temperature, and optomechanical properties opposite to those of a positive-mass system. This enables a quantum-mechanics-free subsystem insulated from quantum back-action.
We analyze an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a high-Q optical cavity driven by a feeble optical field, a situation formally analogous to the central paradigm of cavity optomechanics [Brennecke et al., Science, 322, 235 (2008)]. We account for two-body interactions via a two-fluid model that retains the intuitive appeal of the optomechanical two-mode description. The Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of this system comprises a gapped upper branch and a lower branch that can include an unstable excitation mode.
The dispersive interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity realizes the radiation pressure coupling Hamiltonian. In this system the role of the mechanical oscillator is played by a single condensate excitation mode that is selected by the cavity mode function. We study the effect of atomic s-wave collisions and show that it merely renormalizes parameters of the usual optomechanical interaction. Moreover, we show that even in the case of strong harmonic confinement---which invalidates the use of Bloch states---a single excitation mode of the Bos…
We consider a cavity optomechanical system consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) interacting with two counterpropagating traveling-wave modes in an optical ring cavity. In contrast to the more familiar case where the condensate is driven by the standing-wave field of a high-$Q$ Fabry-P{é}rot cavity we find that both symmetric and antisymmetric collective density side modes of the BEC are mechanically excited by the light field. In the semiclassical, mean-field limit where the light field and the zero-momentum mode of the condensate are treated classically the system is found to exhibi…
We present a detailed study to analyse the Dicke quantum phase transition within the thermodynamic limit for an optomechanically driven Bose-Einstein condensates in a cavity. The photodetection-based quantum optical measurements have been performed to study the dynamics and excitations of this optomechanical Dicke system. For this, we discuss the eigenvalue analysis, fluorescence spectrum and the homodyne spectrum of the system. It has been shown that the normal phase is negligibly affected by the mechanical mode of the mirror while it has a significant effect in the superradiant phase. We hav…
We study the normal mode splitting in a system consisting of a Bose Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped inside a Fabry Perot cavity driven by a single mode laser field. We analyze the variations in frequency and damping rate of the collective density excitation of a BEC imparted by the optical field. We study the occurrence of normal mode splitting which appears as consequences of the hybridization of the fluctuations of the intracavity field and the condensate mode. It is shown that normal mode splitting vanishes for weak coupling between the condensate mode and the intracavity field. Moreove…
We investigate a system consisting of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate interacting dispersively with a Fabry-Perot optical cavity where the two components of the condensate are resonantly coupled to each other by another classical field. The key feature of this system is that the atomic motional degrees of freedom and the internal pseudo-spin degrees of freedom are coupled to the cavity field simultaneously, hence an effective spin-orbital coupling within the condensate is induced by the cavity. The interplay among the atomic center- of-mass motion, the atomic collective spin and the c…
We investigate the effects of dynamical Casimir effect in superradiant light scattering by Bose-Einstein condensate in an optomechanical cavity. The system is studied using both classical and quantized mirror motions. The cavity frequency is harmonically modulated in time for both the cases. The main quantity of interest is the number of intracavity scattered photons. The system has been investigated under the weak and strong modulation. It has been observed that the amplitude of the scattered photons is more for the classical mirror motion than the quantized mirror motion. Also, initially, th…
We investigate the dynamical phase transition of two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlinear tunneling, which is trapped inside a double-well and dispersively coupled to a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity with one moving end mirror driven by a single mode standing field. The nonlinear tunneling interaction leads to an increase of stability points and riches the phase diagram of the system. It is shown that the appearance of the moving end mirror speeds up the tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates, which makes population difference between two wells and regulates the numb…
We consider a hybrid atom-optomechanical system consisting of a mechanical membrane inside an optical cavity and an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate outside the cavity. The condensate is confined in an optical lattice potential formed by a traveling laser beam reflected off one cavity mirror. We derive the cavity-mediated effective atom-atom interaction potential, and find that it is non-uniform, site-dependent, and does not decay as the interatomic distance increases. We show that the presence of this effective interaction breaks the Z$_2$ symmetry of the system and gives rise to new quantum p…
We report a spin-orbit coupling induced back-action cooling in an optomechanical system, composed of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical cavity with one movable end mirror, by suppressing heating effects of quantum noises. The collective density excitations of the spin-orbit coupling mediated hyperfine states - serving as atomic oscillators equally coupled to the cavity field - trigger strongly driven atomic back-action. We find that the back-action not only revamps low-temperature dynamics of its own but also provides an opportunity to cool the mechanical mirro…
Cavity-optomechanics, a rapidly developing area of research, has made a remarkable progress. A stunning manifestation of optomechanical phenomena is in exploiting the mechanical effects of light to couple the optical degree of freedom with mechanical degree of freedom. In this report, we investigate the controlled bistable dynamics of such hybrid optomechanical system composed of cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside high-finesse optical cavity with one moving-end mirror and is driven by a single mode optical field. The numerical results provide evidence for controlled opt…
We propose to thermalize a low-dimensional photon gas and obtain photon Bose-Einstein condensation by optomechanical interactions in a microscopic optical cavity, with a single longitudinal mode and many transverse modes. The geometry of the short cavity is such that it provides a low-frequency cutoff at a photon energy far above the thermal energy, so that thermal emission of photons is suppressed and the photon number is conserved. While previous experiments on photon Bose-Einstein condensation have used dye molecules for photon gas thermalization, we here investigate thermalization owing to…
In this paper, we have investigated theoretically the influence of atomic collisions on the behaviour of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate inside a driven optical cavity. We develop the discrete-mode approximation for the condensate taking into account the interband transitions due to the s-wave scattering interaction. We show that in the Bogoliubov approximation the atom-atom interaction shifts the energies of the excited modes and also plays the role of an optical parametric amplifier for the Bogoliubov side mode which can affect its normal-mode splitting behaviour. On the other han…
We analyze the optomechanics of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with the optical lattice inside a laser-pumped optical cavity and subject to a uniform bias force such as gravity. An atomic wave packet in a tilted lattice undergoes Bloch oscillations; in a cavity the backaction of the atoms on the light leads to a time-dependent modulation of the intracavity lattice at the Bloch frequency. When the Bloch frequency is on the order of the cavity damping rate we find transport of the atoms either up or down the lattice. The transport dynamics can be interpreted as a manifestation of…
We consider the dynamics of a movable mirror (cantilever) of a cavity coupled through radiation pressure to the light scattered from ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. Scattering from different atomic quantum states creates different quantum states of the scattered light, which can be distinguished by measurements of the displacement spectrum of the cantilever. We show that for large pump intensities the steady state displacement of the cantilever shows bistable behaviour. Due to atomic back-action, the displacement spectrum of the cantilever is modified and depends on the position of the …
We report evidence for the existence of a supercurrent of magnons in a magnon Bose-Einstein condensate prepared in a room temperature yttrium-iron-garnet magnetic film and subject to a thermal gradient. The magnon condensate is formed in a parametrically populated magnon gas, and its temporal evolution is studied by time-, frequency- and wavector-resolved Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. It has been found that local heating in the focal point of a probing laser beam enhances the temporal decrease in the density of the freely evolving magnon condensate after the termination of the pumpi…
We study the optomechanical interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a single longitudinal mode of an ultra-high finesse standing wave optical resonator. As a unique feature the resonator combines three extreme regimes, previously not realized together, i.e., strong cooperative coupling, cavity dominated scattering with a Purcell factor far above unity, and sub-recoil resolution provided by a cavity damping rate smaller than four times the single photon recoil frequency. We present experimental observations in good agreement with a two-mode model predicting highly non-linear dynamics wit…
We propose an experimental setup that should make it possible to reveal the frictionless flow of a superfluid of light from the suppression of the drag force that it exerts onto a material obstacle. In the paraxial-propagation geometry considered here, the photon-fluid dynamics is described by a wave equation analogous to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of dilute Bose-Einstein condensates and the obstacle consists in a solid dielectric slab immersed into a nonlinear optical liquid. By means of an ab initio calculation of the electromagnetic force experienced by the obstacle, we anticipate that s…
We study an optomechanical system in which the collective density excitations (Bogoliubov modes) of a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) is coupled to a cavity field. We show that the optical force changes the frequency and the damping constant of the collective density excitations of the BEC. We further analyze the occurrence of normal mode splitting (NMS) due to mixing of the fluctuations of the cavity field and the fluctuations of the condensate with finite atomic two-body interaction. The NMS is found to vanish for small values of the two-body interaction. We further show that the density exci…
Superfluidity---the suppression of scattering in a quantum fluid at velocities below a critical value---is one of the most striking manifestations of the collective behaviour typical of Bose-Einstein condensates. This phenomenon, akin to superconductivity in metals, has until now only been observed at prohibitively low cryogenic temperatures. For atoms, this limit is imposed by the small thermal de Broglie wavelength, which is inversely related to the particle mass. Even in the case of ultralight quasiparticles such as exciton-polaritons, superfluidity has only been demonstrated at liquid heli…
We consider a cavity with a vibrating end mirror and coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate. The cavity field mediates the interplay between mirror and collective oscillations of the atomic density. We study the implications of this dynamics and the possibility of an indirect diagnostic. Our predictions can be observed in a realistic setup that is central to the current quest for mesoscopic quantumness.
We demonstrate the control of entanglement in a hybrid optomechanical system comprising an optical cavity with a mechanical end-mirror and an intracavity Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Pulsed laser light (tuned within realistic experimental conditions) is shown to induce an almost sixfold increase of the atom-mirror entanglement and to be responsible for interesting dynamics between such mesoscopic systems. In order to assess the advantages offered by the proposed control technique, we compare the time-dependent dynamics of the system under constant pumping with the evolution due to the modul…
The propagation of a probe laser field in a cavity optomechanical system with a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied. The transmission properties of the system are investigated and it is shown that the group velocity of the probe pulse field can be controlled by Rabi frequency of the pump laser field. The effect of the decay rate of the cavity photons on the group velocity is studied and it is demonstrated that for small values of the decay rates, the slope of phase dispersion switches from positive to negative just by changing the Rabi frequency of the pump field. Then, the gain-assisted super…
We study a device formed by a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled to the field of a cavity with a moving end-mirror and find a working point such that the mirror-light entanglement is reproduced by the BEC-light quantum correlations. This provides an experimentally viable tool for inferring mirror-light entanglement with only a limited set of assumptions. We prove the existence of tripartite entanglement in the hybrid device, persisting up to temperatures of a few milli-Kelvin, and discuss a scheme to detect it.
We analyze the optomechanics-like properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside an optical resonator and driven by both a classical and a quantized light field. We find that this system exhibits a nature of role reversal between the matter-wave field and the quantized light field. As a result, the matter wave field now plays the role of the quantized light field, and the quantized light field behaves like a movable mirror, in contrast to the familiar situation in BEC-based cavity optomechanics [Brennecke et al., Science 322, 235 (2008); Murch et al., Nat. Phys. 4, 561 (2008)]. …
Integrated electro-optical switches are essential as one of the fundamental elements in the development of modern optoelectronics. As an architecture for photonic systems, exciton polaritons, that are hybrid bosonic quasiparticles that possess unique properties derived from both excitons and photons, have shown much promise. For this system, we demonstrate a significant improvement of emitted intensity and condensation threshold by applying an electric field to a microcavity filled with an organic microbelt. Our theoretical investigations indicate that the electric field makes the excitons dip…
We investigate the possibility of detecting a weak coherent force by means of a hybrid optomechanical quantum device formed by a Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) confined in a high quality factor optical cavity with an oscillatory end mirror. We show using the stochastic cooling technique that the atomic two-body interaction can be utilized to cool the mirror and achieve position squeezing essential for making sensitive measurements of weak forces. We further show that the atomic two-body interaction can also increase the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and decrease the noise of the off-resonant sta…
We study a system of interacting matter quasiparticles strongly coupled to photons inside an optomechanical cavity. The resulting normal modes of the system are represented by hybrid polaritonic quasiparticles, which acquire effective nonlinearity. Its strength is influenced by the presence of the mechanical mode and depends on the resonance frequency of the cavity. This leads to an interactive type of optomechanical coupling, being distinct from the previously studied dispersive and dissipative couplings in optomechanical systems. The emergent interactive coupling is shown to generate effecti…
We consider a hybrid quantum many-body system formed by both a vibrational mode of a nanomembrane, which interacts optomechanically with light in a cavity, and an ultracold atom gas in the optical lattice of the out-coupled light. After integrating over the light field, an effective Hamiltonian reveals a competition between the localizing potential force and the membrane displacement force. For increasing atom-membrane interaction we find a nonequilibrium quantum phase transition from a localized non-motional phase of the atom cloud to a phase of collective motion. Near the quantum critical po…
A spatial potential trap is formed in a 6.0 μm Al(Ga)N nanowire by varying the Al composition along its length during epitaxial growth. The polariton emission characteristics of a dielectric microcavity with the single nanowire embedded in-plane has been studied at room temperature. Excitation is provided at the Al(Ga)N end of the nanowire and polariton emission is observed from the lowest bandgap GaN region of the nanowire. Comparison of the results with those measured in an identical microcavity with an uniform GaN nanowire and having an identical exciton-photon detuning suggests evaporative…

We study a Fermi gas with strong, tunable interactions dispersively coupled to a high-finesse cavity. Upon probing the system along the cavity axis, we observe a strong optomechanical Kerr nonlinearity originating from the density response of the gas to the intracavity field and measure it as a function of interaction strength. We find that the zero-frequency density response function of the Fermi gas increases by a factor of two from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to the Bose-Einstein condensate regime. The results are in quantitative agreement with a theory based on operator-product expansion…
Two-photon coherent states are one of the main building pillars of non-linear and quantum optics. It is the basis for the generation of minimum-uncertainty quantum states and entangled photon pairs, applications not obtainable from standard coherent states or one-photon lasers. Here we describe a fully-resonant optomechanical parametric amplifier involving a polariton condensate in a trap lattice quadratically coupled to mechanical modes. The quadratic coupling derives from non-resonant virtual transitions to extended discrete excited states induced by the optomechanical coupling. Non-resonant…
