The advancement of deep learning has driven notable progress in remote sensing semantic segmentation. Attention mechanisms, while enabling global modeling and utilizing contextual information, face challenges of high computational costs and require window-based operations that weaken capturing long-range dependencies, hindering their effectiveness for remote sensing image processing. In this letter, we propose AMMUNet, a UNet-based framework that employs multi-scale attention map merging, comprising two key innovations: the granular multi-head self-attention (GMSA) module and the attention map merging mechanism (AMMM). GMSA efficiently acquires global information while substantially mitigating computational costs in contrast to global multi-head self-attention mechanism. This is accomplished through the strategic utilization of dimension correspondence to align granularity and the reduction of relative position bias parameters, thereby optimizing computational efficiency. The proposed AMMM effectively combines multi-scale attention maps into a unified representation using a fixed mask template, enabling the modeling of global attention mechanism. Experimental evaluations highlight the superior performance of our approach, achieving remarkable mean intersection over union (mIoU) scores of 75.48\% on the challenging Vaihingen dataset and an exceptional 77.90\% on the Potsdam dataset, demonstrating the superiority of our method in precise remote sensing semantic segmentation. Land cover classification of remote sensing images is a challenging task due to limited amounts of annotated data, highly imbalanced classes, frequent incorrect pixel-level annotations, and an inherent complexity in the semantic segmentation task. In this article, we propose a novel architecture called the dense dilated convolutions' merging network (DDCM-Net) to address this task. The proposed DDCM-Net consists of dense dilated image convolutions merged with varying dilation rates. This effectively utilizes rich combinations of dilated convolutions that enlarge the network's receptive fields …

In the field of Earth Observation (EO), Continual Learning (CL) algorithms have been proposed to deal with large datasets by decomposing them into several subsets and processing them incrementally. The majority of these algorithms assume that data is (a) coming from a single source, and (b) fully labeled. Real-world EO datasets are instead characterized by a large heterogeneity (e.g., coming from aerial, satellite, or drone scenarios), and for the most part they are unlabeled, meaning they can be fully exploited only through the emerging Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) paradigm. For these reaso…

We propose a network for semantic mapping called the Dense Dilated Convolutions Merging Network (DDCM-Net) to provide a deep learning approach that can recognize multi-scale and complex shaped objects with similar color and textures, such as buildings, surfaces/roads, and trees in very high resolution remote sensing images. The proposed DDCM-Net consists of dense dilated convolutions merged with varying dilation rates. This can effectively enlarge the kernels' receptive fields, and, more importantly, obtain fused local and global context information to promote surrounding discriminative capabi…
This report presents the results of the DeepSolaris project that was carried out under the ESS action 'Merging Geostatistics and Geospatial Information in Member States'. During the project several deep learning algorithms were evaluated to detect solar panels in remote sensing data. The aim of the project was to evaluate whether deep learning models could be developed, that worked across different member states in the European Union. Two remote sensing data sources were considered: aerial images on the one hand, and satellite images on the other. Two flavours of deep learning models were eval…
Relative radiometric normalization (RRN) mosaicking among multiple remote sensing images is crucial for the downstream tasks, including map-making, image recognition, semantic segmentation, and change detection. However, there are often seam lines on the mosaic boundary and radiometric contrast left, especially in complex scenarios, making the appearance of mosaic images unsightly and reducing the accuracy of the latter classification/recognition algorithms. This paper renders a novel automatical approach to eliminate seam lines in complex RRN mosaicking scenarios. It utilizes the histogram ma…

Multi-modality data is becoming readily available in remote sensing (RS) and can provide complementary information about the Earth's surface. Effective fusion of multi-modal information is thus important for various applications in RS, but also very challenging due to large domain differences, noise, and redundancies. There is a lack of effective and scalable fusion techniques for bridging multiple modality encoders and fully exploiting complementary information. To this end, we propose a new multi-modality network (MultiModNet) for land cover mapping of multi-modal remote sensing data based o…
Image-text retrieval in remote sensing aims to provide flexible information for data analysis and application. In recent years, state-of-the-art methods are dedicated to ``scale decoupling'' and ``semantic decoupling'' strategies to further enhance the capability of representation. However, these previous approaches focus on either the disentangling scale or semantics but ignore merging these two ideas in a union model, which extremely limits the performance of cross-modal retrieval models. To address these issues, we propose a novel Scale-Semantic Joint Decoupling Network (SSJDN) for remote s…
Remote sensing image retrieval (RSIR) is the process of ranking database images depending on the degree of similarity compared to the query image. As the complexity of RSIR increases due to the diversity in shooting range, angle, and location of remote sensors, there is an increasing demand for methods to address these issues and improve retrieval performance. In this work, we introduce a novel method for retrieving aerial images by merging group convolution with attention mechanism and metric learning, resulting in robustness to rotational variations. For refinement and emphasis on important …
Imputation of missing data in large regions of satellite imagery is necessary when the acquired image has been damaged by shadows due to clouds, or information gaps produced by sensor failure. The general approach for imputation of missing data, that could not be considered missed at random, suggests the use of other available data. Previous work, like local linear histogram matching, take advantage of a co-registered older image obtained by the same sensor, yielding good results in filling homogeneous regions, but poor results if the scenes being combined have radical differences in target ra…
