We present the first CCD observations of an eclipsing binary, ZTFJ015003.88+534734.1, which is a member in the open star cluster UBC 188. The observations were taken by the 1.88 m telescope at the Kottamia Astronomical Observatory (KAO) in SDSS griz bands. The latest version of the Wilson- Devinney (W-D) code was employed for photometric analysis and light curve modeling of the eclipsing binary. The results indicate that the binary system is in an over-contact configuration. The mass of the primary star (M1) is determined to be 1.293 Msun, and the mass of the secondary star (M2) is directly derived from the system's estimated mass ratio (q= M2/M1) as 0.340 times the solar mass (Msun). We investigated the color-magnitude diagram and the membership probability of the open cluster UBC 188 using the Gaia DR3 data. We determined the membership probability of the eclipsing binary ZTFJ015003.88+534734.1 using the pyUPMASK algorithm and found that its membership probability is one.
New BVR light curves of the eclipsing binary system NSV 5904 have been constructed based on CCD observations obtained using 1.88-m telescope of Kottamia observatory during the phase of telescope testing and adjusting its optical quality on May, 2009. New times of minima and epoch have been determined from these light curves. Using the Binary Maker 3.0 (BM3) package, a preliminary determination of the photometric orbital and physical parameters of NSV 5904 are given.
New BVRI light curves of the eclipsing binary system 1SWASP J160156.04+202821.6 have been obtained with the 1.88-m telescope of Kottamia Astronomical Observatory (KAO), Egypt on June, 2013. New twenty times of minima of the system J1601 and new ephemeris have been reduced and derived from the present photometry. A preliminary determination of the geometric and photometric element parameters of the system J1601 has been derived.
An initial investigation of two poorly studied eclipsing binaries separated by ~3' in the sky is presented. The first star (GSC 2576-01248) was discovered by the TrES exoplanet search project. The second one (GSC 2576-02071) was identified by the authors during CCD observations of GSC 2576-01248. We combine our dedicated CCD photometry with the archival TrES observations and data from the digitized photographic plates of the Moscow collection to determine periods of the two variable stars with high precision. For GSC 2576-01248, addition of historical photographic data provides a major improve…
New CCD photometry of seven successive years from 2010 is presented for the HW Vir-type eclipsing binary 2M 1533+3759. Using the $VI$ light curves together with the radial-velocity data given by For et al. (2010), we determined the absolute parameters of each component to be $M_1$ = 0.442$\pm$0.012 M$_\odot$, $M_2$ = 0.124$\pm$0.005 M$_\odot$, $R_1$ = 0.172$\pm$0.002 R$_\odot$, $R_2$ = 0.157$\pm$0.002 R$_\odot$, $L_1$ = 19.4$\pm$1.4 L$_\odot$, and $L_2$ = 0.002$\pm$0.002 L$_\odot$. These indicate that 2M 1533+3759 is a detached system consisting of a normal sdB primary and an M7 dwarf companio…
We present the results of the $UBVI_C$ variability survey in the young open cluster NGC 6611 based on observations obtained during 34 nights spanning one year. In total, we found 95 variable stars. Most of these stars are classified as periodic and irregular pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. The analysis of the $JHK_S$ 2MASS photometry and four-colour IRAC photometry revealed 165 Class II young stellar sources, 20 of which are irregular variables and one is an eclipsing binary. These classifications, complemented by $JHK$ UKIDSS photometry and $riHα$ VPHAS photometry, were used to identify 24 can…
New CCD light curves of the recently detected eclipsing variable GSC 4589-2999 were obtained and analysed using the Wilson-Deninney code. Spectroscopic observations of the system allowed the spectral classification of the components and the determination of their radial velocities. The physical properties and absolute parameters of the components and an updated ephemeris of the system are given.
We present CCD photometric observations of an eclipsing binary in the direction of the open cluster Praesepe using the 2 m telescope of IUCAA Girawali Observatory, India. Though the system was classified as an eclipsing binary by Pepper et al.(2008),detail investigations were lacking. The photometric solutions using the Wilson-Devinney code suggest that it is a W-type W UMa system and interestingly, the system parameters were similar to another contact binary system SW Lac.
A rarely studied open cluster, King 1 is observed using the 1.3m telescope equipped with 2k x 4k CCD at the Vainu Bappu Observatory, India. We analyse the photometric data obtained from the CCD observations in both B and V bands. Out of 132 detected stars in the open cluster King 1 field, we have identified 4 stellar variables and 2 among them are reported as newly detected binary systems, in this paper. The parallax values from GAIA DR2 suggest that the open cluster King 1 is at the background of these two detected binary systems, falling along the same line of sight, giving rise to different…
New BVRI CCD observations of the semi-detached eclipsing binary EG Cep are presented. The observed light curves are analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney program and new geometrical and photometric elements are derived. These elements are used to compute the physical parameters of the system in order to study its evolutionary status.
We have obtained CCD photometry in 2010-11 of V963 Per (=GSC3355 0394), which is a recently identified close binary star with unequal eclipse depths. The seven new eclipse timings yield an improved ephemeris, but we caution that secondary eclipse can be affected by variation of the light curve. This variation seems to be on a monthly timescale at the few percent level.
The CCD photometric observations of the eclipsing binary PS Persei (PS Per) were obtained on two consecutive days in 2009. The 2003 version Wilson-Devinney code was used to analyze the first complete light curves in $V$ and $R$ bands. It is found that PS Per is a short-period Algol-type binary with the less massive component accurately filling its inner critical Roche lobe. The mass ratio of $q=0.518$ and the orbital inclination of $i=89.^{\circ}86$ are obtained. On the other hand, based on all available times of primary light minimum including two new ones, the orbital period has been improve…
We present multi-colour CCD photometry of GSC4589-2999 obtained in 2008 and 2009. The observations indicate that the system is an active Algol binary. Based on the new data, the mean brightness of the system is decreasing through the years 2007-2009. The light curves obtained in 2008-2009 are modelled using the Wilson-Devinney code. We also discussed the light and colour variations of the system at different orbital phases. Evidence suggests that these brightness and colour variations are due to the rotation of unevenly distributed starspots on two components of the system.
CCD photometric observations of the Algol-type eclipsing binary X Tri have been obtained. The light curves are analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney (WD) code and new geometric and photometric elements are derived. A new O-C analysis of the system, based on the most reliable timings of minima found in the literature, is presented and apparent period changes are discussed with respect to possible and multiple Light-Time Effect (LITE) in the system. Moreover, the results for the existence of additional bodies around the eclipsing pair, derived from the period study, are compared with those for extra…
CCD multi-band light curves of the neglected eclipsing binaries V405 Cep, V948 Her, KR Mon and UZ Sge were obtained and analysed using the Wilson-Devinney code. New geometric and absolute parameters were derived and used to determine their current evolutionary state. V405 Cep, V948 Her and KR Mon are detached systems with their components in almost the same evolutionary stage. UZ Sge is a classical Algol system with a tertiary companion around it. Moreover, since the systems V405 Cep, V948 Her and UZ Sge contain an early type component, their light curves were examined for possible pulsation b…
CCD photometric observations of the Algol-type eclipsing binary AT Peg have been obtained. The light curves are analyzed with modern techniques and new geometric and photometric elements are derived. A new orbital period analysis of the system, based on the most reliable timings of minima found in the literature, is presented and apparent period modulations are discussed with respect to the Light-Time effect (LITE) and secular changes in the system. The results of these analyses are compared and interpreted in order to obtain a coherent view of the system's behaviour.
In 2002, 2004, and 2017 we conducted high precision CCD photometry observations of the eclipsing binary system AS~Cam. By the analysis of the light curves from 1967 to 2017 (our data + data from the literature) we obtained photometric elements of the system and found the change of the system's orbital eccentricity by $Δe=0.03 \pm 0.01$. This change can indicate that there is a third companion in the system in a highly inclined orbit with respect to the orbital plane of the central binary, and its gravitational influence may cause the discrepancy between the observed and theoretical apsidal mot…
We present results of a CCD variability search in the field of the young open cluster NGC 6834. We discover 15 stars to be variable in light. The brightest, a multiperiodic Gamma Doradus-type variable is a foreground star. The eight fainter ones, including a Gamma Cassiopeiae-type variable, two Lambda Eridani-type variables, an ellipsoidal variable, an EB-type eclipsing binary, and three variable stars we could not classify, all have E(B-V) within proper range, thus fulfilling the necessary condition to be members. One of the three unclassified variables may be a non-member on account of its l…
We present our ground-based CCD observations of the close binary systems DD Mon and XY UMa in B, V, R and I bands. The light curves are analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney code (W-D) for the derivation of the geometric and photometric elements of the systems. We compare the methods of photometric and spectroscopic mass ratio determination in these binaries, as a function of all typical difficulties, which arise during the analysis of such systems (light curve asymmetries, third light etc). Finally, a new spot model is suggested for the eclipsing system XY UMa, which belongs to the RS CVn type o…
Results of the CCD observations of CzeV404 Her are displayed. During the season of June-August 2014 we detected one outburst and one superoutburst of the star. Clear superhumps with the period of P_sh=0.10472(2) days were observed. The superhump period was decreasing with a high value of P_dot=-2.43(8) x 10^(-4). For 17 eclipses, we calculated an orbital period with the value of P_orb=0.0980203(6) days which indicates that CzeV404 Her belongs to period gap objects and it is the longest orbital period eclipsing SU UMa star. Based on superhump and orbital period determinations, the period excess…
We study the newly discovered variable star GSC 4560--02157. CCD photometry was performed in 2013--2014, and a spectrum was obtained with the 6-m telescope in June, 2014. GSC 4560--02157 is demonstrated to be a short-period (P=0.265359d) eclipsing variable star. All its flat-bottom primary minima are approximately at the same brightness level, while the star's out-of-eclipse brightness and brightness at secondary minimum varies considerably (by up to 0.6m) from cycle to cycle. Besides, there are short-term (time scale of 0.03-0.04 days) small-amplitude brightness variations out of eclipse. Thi…
We present results of variability search in the field of the young open cluster NGC 1502. Eight variable stars were discovered. Of six other stars in the observed field that were suspected for variability, we confirm variability of two, including one beta Cep star, NGC 1502-26. The remaining four suspects were found to be constant in our photometry. In addition, UBVI photometry of the well-known massive eclipsing binary SZ Cam was obtained. The new variable stars include: two eclipsing binaries of which one is a relatively bright detached system with an EA-type light curve, an alpha2 CVn-type …
The first 100 brightest eclipsing systems from the Small Magellanic Cloud were studied for their period changes. The photometric data from the surveys OGLE-II, OGLE-III, OGLE-IV and MACHO were combined with our new CCD observations obtained using the Danish 1.54-m telescope (La Silla, Chile). Besides the period changes the light curves were also analysed using the program PHOEBE, which provided the physical parameters of both eclipsing components. For 14 of these systems the additional bodies were found, having the orbital periods from 2 to 20 yr and the eccentricities were found to be up to 0…
CCD photometric observations in VRI colors and spectroscopic observations of the newly discovered eclipsing binary GSC 2314-0530 (NSVS 6550671) with dMe components and very short period of P=0.192636 days are presented. The simultaneous light-curve solution and radial velocity solution allows to determine the global parameters of GSC 2314-0530: T_{1}=3735 K; T_{2}=3106 K; M_{1}=0.51 M_sun; M_{2}=0.26 M_sun; R_{1}=0.55 R_sun; R_{2}=0.29 R_sun; L_{1}=0.053 L_sun; L_{2}=0.007 L_sun; i=72.5 degr; a=1.28 R_sun; d=59 pc. The chromospheric activity of its components is revealed by strong emission in …
We present the first modern analysis of two young, eclipsing binaries, EK Cep and HS Her, based on new, ground-based, CCD multicolour light curves as well as the TESS observations, radial velocity curves, and eclipse timing measurements. The orbital and stellar parameters of the stars are determined by Roche modelling, and their evolutionary status is examined using a grid of isochrones and evolutionary tracks. We find that HS Her is 25-32 Myr old and its components are on the zero-age main sequence; at the age of 16-20 Myr, the primary of EK Cep is also on the ZAMS, but its secondary is a pre…
We present an orbital solution study for the newly discovered system 1SWASP J080150.03+471433.8 by means of new CCD observations in VRI bands. Our observations were carried out on 25 Feb. 2013 using the Kottamia optical telescope at NRIAG, Egypt. 12 new times of minima were estimated and the observed light curves were analysed using the Wilson-Devinney code. The accepted orbital solution reveals that the primary component of is more massive and hotter than the secondary one by about 280K. The system is an over-contact one with fillout ratio ~ 29% and is located at a distance of 195 Pc. The evo…
We report the results of CCD photometric observations in the direction of the Coma Berenices and Upgren 1 open clusters with the aim at searching for new short-period variable stars. A total of 35 stars were checked for variability. As a result of this search the star designated in the SIMBAD database as Melotte 111 AV 1224 was found to be a new eclipsing binary star. Follow-up Strömgren photometric and spectroscopic observations allowed us to derive the spectral type, distance, reddening and effective temperature of the star. A preliminary analysis of the binary light curve was performed and …
We present a CCD photometric study of the star with ASAS ID 134738 + 0410.1 using V band observations obtained from the $IUCAA$ Girawali Observatory (IGO) 2-metre telescope, India. The star was selected from the $δ$ Scuti database of All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) (Pojmanski 2002). Our analysis reveals that the star is not a $δ$ Scuti variable but is in fact a W UMa type contact binary with an orbital period of 0.2853067 day. Two new times of primary and secondary minima were determined from the observed data. A preliminary solution obtained using the Wilson-Devinney light curve modelling tec…
GU Boo is one of only a relatively small number of well studied double-lined eclipsing binaries that contain low-mass stars. L'opez-Morales & Ribas (2005, hereafter LR05) present a comprehensive analysis of multi-color light and radial velocity curves for this system. The GU Boo light curves presented in LR05 had substantial asymmetries, which were attributed to large spots. In spite of the asymmetry LR05 derived masses and radii accurate to about 2%. We obtained additional photometry of GU Boo using both a CCD and a single-channel photometer and modeled the light curves with the ELC software …
High precision CCD observations of six totally eclipsing contact binaries were presented and analyzed. It is found that only one target is an A-type contact binary (V429 Cam), while the others are W-type contact ones. By analyzing the times of light minima, we discovered that two of them exhibit secular period increase while three manifest long-term period decrease. For V1033 Her, a cyclic variation superimposed on the long-term increase was discovered. By comparing the Gaia distances with those calculated by the absolute parameters of 173 contact binaries, we found that Gaia distance can be a…
We present CCD photometric observations of the W UMa type contact binary EK Comae Berenices using the 2 metre telescope of $IUCAA$ Girawali Observatory, India. The star was classified as a W UMa type binary of subtype-W by \citet{sam1996}. The new V band photometric observations of the star reveal that shape of the light curve has changed significantly from the one observed by \citet{sam1996}. A detailed analysis of the light curve obtained from the high-precision CCD photometric observations of the star indicates that EK Comae Berenices is not a W-type but an A-type totally eclipsing W UMa co…
We report on analysis of the two-color VR CCD observations of the newly discovered variable 2MASS J18024395+4003309=VSX J180243.9+400331 obtained using the 1-m telescope of the Mt. Lemmon Observatory (LOAO) in the field of the intermediate polar V1323 Her. The extended version of this conference talk we published in 2015JASS...32..127A. The variability was reported in 2012OAP....25..150A, and the object was monitored. The two-color observations covered all phase interval. The object is classified as an Algol-type variable with tidally distorted components, and shows an asymmetry of the maxima …
We present the results of differential, time series photometry for GSC 02038-00293, a suspected RS CVn binary, using data collected with the Open University's PIRATE robotic telescope located at the Observatori Astronomic de Mallorca between 10 May and 13 June 2010. A full orbital period cycle in the V band and partial cycle of B and R bands were obtained for GSC 02038-00293 showing an orbital period of 0.4955 +/- 0.0001 days. This period is in close agreement with that of previously published values but significantly different to that found by the All Sky Automated Survey of 0.330973 days. We…
New Multi-color $B$ $V$ $R_c$ $I_c$ photometric observation are presented for W UMa type eclipsing binary V1073 Cyg. The multi-color light curves analysis with the Wilson-Devinney(W-D) procedure acquired the absolute parameters of this system, showing that V1073Cyg is a shallow contact binary system with fill-out factor $f=0.124(\pm0.011)$. We collected all available times of light minima spanning 119 years including CCD data to construct the O-C curve and made detailed O-C analysis. The O-C diagram shows that the period change is complex. There exist a long-term continuous decrease and a cycl…
The Tarleton Observatory's 0.8m telescope and CCD photometer were used to obtain 1298 observations of the short period eclipsing binary star MW And. The observations were obtained in Johnson's BVR filters. The light curves show that MW And is an eclipsing binary star with a period of 0.26376886 days. Further analysis showed that the period of MW And is changing at the rate of 0.17sec/year. The photometric solutions were obtained using the 2015 version of the Wilson-Devinney model. The solutions show that MW And is an eclipsing binary star of W UMa type. Our analysis suggests that the system ha…
We present the results of our study of the eclipsing binary systems CSS J112237.1+395219, LINEAR 1286561 and LINEAR 2602707 based on new CCD $B$, $V$, $R_c$ and $I_c$ complete light curves. The ultra-short period nature of the stars \citep{Drake2014} is confirmed and the system's periods are revised. The light curves were modelled using the 2005 version of the Wilson-Devinney code. When necessary, cool spots on the surface of the primary component were introduced to account for asymmetries in the light curves. As a result, we found that CSS J112237.1+395219 is a W UMa type contact binary syste…
CCD observations of 68 eclipsing binary systems, candidates for containing δ Scuti components, were obtained. Their light curves are analysed using the PERIOD04 software for possible pulsational behaviour. For the systems QY Aql, CZ Aqr, TY Cap, WY Cet, UW Cyg, HL Dra, HZ Dra, AU Lac, CL Lyn and IO UMa, complete light curves were observed due to the detection of a pulsating component. All of them, except QY Aql and IO UMa, are analysed with modern astronomical softwares in order to determine their geometrical and pulsational characteristics. Spectroscopic observations of WY Cet and UW Cyg were…
This paper presents CCD observations of the Algol-type eclipsing binaries RZ Dra and EG Cep. The light curves have been analyzed with the PHOEBE software and Wilson-Devinney code (2003 version). A detailed photometric analysis, based on these observations, is presented for both binarity and pulsation. The results indicate semidetached systems where the secondary component fills its Roche lobe. After the subtraction of the theoretical light curve, a frequency analysis was performed in order to check for pulsations of the primary component of each system. Moreover, a period analysis was performe…
New CCD photometry during 4 successive years from 2005 is presented for the eclipsing binary GW Cep, together with reasonable explanations for the light and period variations. All historical light curves, obtained over a 30-year interval, display striking light changes, and are best modeled by the simultaneous existence of a cool spot and a hot spot on the more massive cool component star. The facts that the system is magnetically active and that the hot spot has consistently existed on the inner hemisphere of the star indicate that the two spots are formed by (1) magnetic dynamo-related activ…
New CCD photometric observations of the eclipsing binary V566 Oph have been obtained. The light curves are analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney code and new geometric and photometric elements are derived. A new O-C analysis of the system is presented and apparent period changes are discussed with respect to possible Light-Time Effect in the system.
We present time-resolved photometry of six faint (V>17mag) cataclysmic variables (CVs); one of them is V849 Oph and the others are identified from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS J0920+0042, SDSS J1327+6528, SDSS J1227+5139, SDSS J1607.02+3623, SDSS J1457+5148). The optical CCD photometric observations of these objects were performed at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (Turkey) between February 2006 and March 2009. We aimed to detect short time scale orbital variability arisen from hot-spot modulation, flickering structures which occur from rapid fluctuations of material transferring from r…
We present a timing analysis of the eclipsing post-common envelope binary (PCEB) DE CVn. Based on new CCD photometric observations and the published data, we found that the orbital period in DE CVn has a cyclic period oscillation with an amplitude of $28.08$ s and a period of $11.22$ years plus a rapid period decrease at a rate of $\dot{P}=-3.35\times10^{-11}ss^{-1}$. According to the evolutionary theory, secular period decreases in PCEBs arise from angular momentum losses (AMLs) driven by gravitational radiation (GR) and magnetic braking (MB). However, the observed orbital decay is too fast t…
New CCD photometry is presented for the hot overcontact binary DK Cyg, together with reasonable explanations for the light and period variations. Historical light and velocity curves from 1962 to 2012 were simultaneously analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) synthesis code. The brightness disturbances were satisfactorily modeled by applying a magnetic cool spot on the primary star. Based on 261 times of minimum light including 116 new timings and spanning more than 87 yrs, a period study reveals that the orbital period has varied due to a periodic oscillation superposed on an upward parabola…
New CCD photometric observations of UZ Leo were obtained between February 2012 and April 2013, and on February 2017. Its physical properties were derived from detailed analyses of our light curves and existing radial velocities. The results indicate that this system is a totally-eclipsing A-subtype overcontact binary with both a high fill-out factor of 76 \% and a third light source contributing 12 \% light in the $B$ bandpass, 10 \% in $V$, and 7 \% in $R$. The light residuals between observations and theoretical models are satisfactorily fitted by adopting a magnetic cool spot on the more ma…
New CCD photometric observations of the eclipsing system AR Boo were obtained from February 2006 to April 2008. The star's photometric properties are derived from detailed studies of the period variability and of all available light curves. We find that over about 56 years the orbital period of the system has varied due to a combination of an upward parabola and a sinusoid rather than in a monotonic fashion. Mass transfer from the less massive primary to the more massive secondary component is likely responsible for at least a significant part of the secular period change. The cyclical variati…
New BVRI CCD photometric observations of the contact system DF Hya have been obtained. The light curves were analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney code and new geometric and photometric elements were derived. Moreover, the light curve solution, with the assumption of a third light in the system, revealed the existence of a tertiary component around the eclipsing pair. The present results are compared with those of other recent studies.
We present new multiband CCD photometry for AA UMa made on 8 nights between January and March 2009; the $R$ light curves are the first ever compiled. Historical light curves, as well as ours, display partial eclipses and inverse O'Connell effects with Max I fainter than Max II. Among possible spot models, a cool spot on either of the component stars and its variability with time permit good light-curve representations for the system. A total of 194 eclipse timings over 81 yrs, including our five timings, were used for ephemeris computations. We found that the orbital period of the system has v…
We report the discovery of a new eclipsing polar, MASTER OT J061451.70-272535.5, detected as an optical transient by MASTER auto-detection software at the recently commissioned MASTER-SAAO telescope. Time resolved (10-20 s) photometry with the SAAO 1.9-m, and 1.0-m telescopes, utilizing the SHOC EM-CCD cameras, revealed that the source eclipses, with a period of 2.08 hours (7482.9$\pm$3.5$\,$s). The eclipse light curve has a peculiar morphology, comprising an initial dip, where the source brightness drops to ${\sim}$50% of the pre-eclipse level before gradually increasing again in brightness. …
Combining with our newest CCD times of light minimum of EM Cygni, all 45 available times of light minimum including 7 data with large scatters are compiled and the updated O-C analysis is made. The bestfit for the O-C diagram of EM Cygni is a quadratic-plus-sinusoidal fit. The secular orbital period decrease rate -2.5(\pm 0.3)x10^{-11} s s^{-1} means that magnetic braking effect with a rate of mass loss via stellar wind, 2.3x10^{-10}Msunyr^{-1}, is needed for explaining the observed orbital period decrease. Moreover, for explaining the significant cyclical period change with a period of \sim 1…
We present a spectroscopic study of the eclipsing binary system AS Camelopardalis, the first such study based on phase-resolved CCD echelle spectra. Via a spectral disentangling analysis we measure the minimum masses of the stars to be M_A sin^3 i = 3.213 +/- 0.007 M_sun and M_B sin^3 i = 2.323 +/- 0.006 M_sun, their effective temperatures to be T_eff(A) = 12840 +/- 120 K and T_eff(B) = 10580 +/- 240 K, and their projected rotational velocities to be v_A sin i_A = 14.5 +/- 0.1 km/s and v_B sin i_B = 4.6 +/- 0.1 km/s. These projected rotational velocities appear to be much lower than the synchr…
New CCD photometric observations in V, R and I filters of the eclipsing binary AV CMi have been obtained. The complete light curves are analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney code and new geometric and photometric elements are derived. Moreover, 2-year systematic observations of the system revealed the existence of a third body orbiting around one of the components with an approximate period of 0.52 days. The first light elements for this additional component are given and its nature is discussed.
Aims: New CCD observations for semidetached and detached eclipsing binaries from the Large Magellanic Cloud were carried out using the Danish 1.54-m telescope located at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. The selected systems were monitored for their times of minima, which were required to be able to study the period changes taking place in them. In addition, many new times of minima were derived from the photometric surveys OGLE-II, OGLE-III, and MACHO. Methods: The O-C diagrams of minima timings were analysed using the hypothesis of the light-travel time effect, i.e. assuming the orbital mot…
New CCD photometric observations of BX Dra were obtained for 26 nights from 2009 April to 2010 June. The long-term photometric behaviors of the system are presented from detailed studies of the period and light variations, based on the historical data and our new observations. All available light curves display total eclipses at secondary minima and inverse O'Connell effects with Max I fainter than Max II, which are satisfactorily modeled by adding the slightly time-varying hot spot on the primary star. A total of 87 times of minimum light spanning over about 74 yrs, including our 22 timing me…
In this paper, CCD photometric light curves for the short-period eclipsing binary 1SWASP J140533.33+114639.1 (hereafter J1405) in the $BVR$ bands are presented and analyzed using the 2013 version of the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code. It is discovered that the J1405 is a W-subtype shallow contact binary with a contact degree of $f$ = 7.9$\pm$ 0.5\% and a mass ratio of $q$ = 1.55 $\pm$ 0.02. In order to explain the asymmetric light curves of the system, a cool star-spot on the more massive component was employed. This shallow contact eclipsing binary may be formed from a short-period detached syste…
We have conducted a 1.5 year-long variability study of the stars in the Cygnus OB2 association, the region in the northern hemisphere with the highest density of optically visible massive stars. The survey was conducted using four pointings in the Johnson $R$ and $I$ bands with a 35 cm Meade LX200-ACF telescope equipped with a 3.2 Mpixel SBIG ST10-XME CCD camera and includes 300+ epochs in each filter. A total of 1425 objects were observed with limiting magnitudes of 15 in $R$ and 14 in $I$. The photometry was calibrated using reference stars with existing $UBVJHK$ photometry. Bright stars hav…
As extensive ground-based observations and characterisation of different variable stars are of the utmost importance in preparing optimal input catalogues for space missions, our aim was to search for new variable stars in selected fields of the northern sky. We obtained 24470 CCD images and analysed photometric time series of stars using the DAOPHOT based package Muniwin as the first step, and the Period04 package was used to further analyse the suspected new variable stars. The light curves and other observational results are presented for 3598 stars online. We found 81 new variable stars, a…
We present results of a BVI variability survey in the young open cluster NGC 457 based on observations obtained during three separate runs spanning almost 20 years. In total, we found 79 variable stars, of which 66 are new. The BVI photometry was transformed to the standard system and used to derive cluster parameters by means of isochrone fitting. Using the complementary H-alpha photometry carried out in two seasons separated by over 10 years, we find that the cluster is very rich in Be stars. In total, 15 stars in the observed field of which 14 are cluster members showed H-alpha in emission …
We have derived the absolute proper motion (PM) of the globular cluster M55 using a large set of CCD images collected with the du Pont telescope between 1997 and 2008. We find (PM_RA*cos(DEC), PM_DEC) = (-3.31 +/- 0.10, -9.14 +/- 0.15) mas/yr relative to background galaxies. Membership status was determined for 16 945 stars with 14<V<21 from the central part of the cluster. The PM catalogue includes 52 variables of which 43 are probable members of M55. This sample is dominated by pulsating blue straggler stars but also includes 5 eclipsing binaries, three of which are main sequence objects. Th…
The CCD observations for the W UMa type binary systems GSC 2362-2866 and GSC 107-596 have been analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney Code to determine their photometric orbital and physical parameters. The results show that both systems may be classified as A-subtype of W-UMa eclipsing binary. The mass ratio of GSC 2362-2866 is found to be q = 0.73, with an over-contact degree of f = 0.122%. While the mass ratio of the system GSC 107-596 is found to be q = 0.70 with an over-contact degree of f = 0.166% in V_band and q = 0.69 and f = 0.111% in R band
We report CCD $V$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6333 (M9). The technique of difference image analysis has been used, which enables photometric precision better than 0.05 mag for stars brighter than $V \sim 19.0$ mag, even in the crowded central regions of the cluster. The high photometric precision has resulted in the discovery of two new RRc stars, three eclipsing binaries, seven long-term variables and one field RRab star behind the cluster. A detailed identification chart and equatorial coordinates are given for all the variable stars in the field of our images …
