We prove a stability threshold theorem for 2D Navier-Stokes on three unbounded domains: the whole plane $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}$, the half plane $\mathbb{R} \times [0,\infty)$ with Navier boundary conditions, and the infinite channel $\mathbb{R} \times [-1, 1]$ with Navier boundary conditions. Starting with the Couette shear flow, we consider initial perturbations $ω_{in}$ which are of size $ν^{1/2}(1+\ln(1/ν)^{1/2})^{-1}$ in an anisotropic Sobolev space with an additional low frequency control condition for the planar cases. We then demonstrate that such perturbations exhibit inviscid damping of the velocity, as well as enhanced dissipation at $x$-frequencies $|k| \gg ν$ with decay time-scale $O(ν^{-1/3}|k|^{-2/3})$. On the plane and half-plane, we show Taylor dispersion for $x$-frequencies $|k| \ll ν$ with decay time-scale $O(ν|k|^{-2})$, while on the channel we show low frequency dispersion for $|k| \ll ν$ with decay time-scale $O(ν^{-1})$. Generalizing the work of arXiv:2311.00141 done on $\mathbb{T} \times [-1,1]$, the key contribution of this paper is to perform new nonlinear computations at low frequencies with wave number $|k| \lesssim ν$ and at intermediate frequencies with wave number $ν\lesssim |k| \leq 1$, and to provide the first enhanced dissipation result for a fully-nonlinear shear flow on an unbounded $x$-domain. Additionally, we demonstrate that the results of this paper apply equally to solutions of the perturbed $β$-plane equations from atmospheric dynamics.
Consider the linear stability of the three dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}$. We prove the enhanced dissipation phenomenon for the linearized isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations around the Couette flow $(y, 0, 0)^\top$. Moreover, the lift-up phenomenon is also shown in this paper. Compared with the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations [Ann. of Math.,185(2017), 541--608], the lift-up effect here is stronger due to the loss of the incompressible condition.
In this paper, we consider the stability threshold of the 2D shear flow $(U(y),0)^{\top}$ of the Navier-Stokes equation at high Reynolds number $Re$. When the shear flow is near in Sobolev norm to the Couette flow $(y,0)^{\top}$ in some sense, we prove that if the initial data $u_0$ satisfies $\|u_0-(U(y),0)^{\top}\|\leq εRe^{-1/3}$, then the solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation approaches to some shear flow which is also close to the Couette flow for $t\gg Re^{1/3}$, as $t\to\infty$.
This paper concerns with the stability of the plane Couette flow resulted from the motions of boundaries that the top boundary $Σ_1$ and the bottom one $Σ_0$ move with constant velocities $(a,0)$ and $(b,0)$, respectively. If one imposes Dirichlet boundary condition on the top boundary and Navier boundary condition on the bottom boundary with Navier coefficient $α$, there always exists a plane Couette flow which is exponentially stable for nonnegative $α$ and any positive viscosity $μ$ and any $a, b \in \mathbb{R}$, or, for $α<0$ but viscosity $μ$ and the moving velocities of boundaries $(a,0)…
In this paper, we study the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Couette flow in the stably stratified regime, namely the Richardson number $γ^2>\frac{1}{4}$. Precisely, we prove that if the initial perturbation $(u_{in},\vartheta_{in})$ of the Couette flow $v_s=(y,0)$ and the linear temperature $ρ_s=-γ^2y+1$ satisfies $\|u_{in}\|_{H^{s+1}}+\|\vartheta_{in}\|_{H^{s+2}}\leq ε_0ν^{\frac{1}{2}}$, then the asymptotic stability holds.
In this note, we investigate the stability property of shear flows under the 2D stationary Navier-Stokes equations, and we obtain that the Couette flow $(y,0)$ is stable under the space of $\mathcal{D}^{1,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for any $1<q<\infty$ and unstable in the space of $\mathcal{D}^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. A key observation is the anisotropic cut-off function. We also consider the Poiseuille flow $(y^2,0)$, which is stable in $\mathcal{D}^{1,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $\frac43<q\leq4.$
We prove the existence and stability of smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations near plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. Consequently, we also provide the zero viscosity limit of the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations to the steady Euler equations. First, in the absence of any external force, we prove that there exist smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations which are stable under infinitesimal perturbations of plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. In particular, if the basic flow is the Couette flow, then we can prove that the flow is stable for any finite perturbation small e…

In this paper, we study the transition threshold problem for the 2-D Navier-Stokes equations around the Couette flow $(y,0)$ at large Reynolds number $Re$ in a finite channel. We develop a systematic method to establish the resolvent estimates of the linearized operator and space-time estimates of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. In particular, three kinds of important effects: enhanced dissipation, inviscid damping and boundary layer, are integrated into the space-time estimates in a sharp form. As an application, we prove that if the initial velocity $v_0$ satisfies $\|v_0-(y, 0)\|_{H…
We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbf{R}$, with initial vorticity that is $δ$ close in $H^{log}_xL^2_{y}$ to $-1$(the vorticity of the Couette flow $(y,0)$). We prove that if $δ\ll ν^{1/2}$, where $ν$ denotes the viscosity, then the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation approaches some shear flow which is also close to Couette flow for time $t\gg ν^{-1/3}$ by a mixing-enhanced dissipation effect and then converges back to Couette flow when $t\to +\infty$. In particular, we show the nonlinear enhanced dissipation and the inviscid damping results…
We study the 2D Navier-Stokes equations linearized around the Couette flow $(y,0)^t$ in the periodic channel $\mathbb T \times [-1,1]$ with no-slip boundary conditions in the vanishing viscosity $ν\to 0$ limit. We split the vorticity evolution into the free evolution (without a boundary) and a boundary corrector that is exponentially localized to at most an $O(ν^{1/3})$ boundary layer. If the initial vorticity perturbation is supported away from the boundary, we show inviscid damping of both the velocity and the vorticity associated to the boundary layer. For example, our $L^2_t L^1_y$ estimat…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system around the Couette flow with small viscosity $ν$ and small thermal diffusion $μ$ in a finite channel. In particular, we prove that if the initial velocity and initial temperature $(v_{in},ρ_{in})$ satisfies $\|v_{in}-(y,0)\|_{H_{x,y}^2}\leq \e_0 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f12}$ and $\|ρ_{in}-1\|_{H_x^{1}L_y^2}\leq \e_1 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f{11}{12}}$ for some small $\e_0,\e_1$ independent of $ν, μ$, then for the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system, the velocity remains within $O(\m…
We study the stability threshold of the 2D Couette flow in Sobolev spaces at high Reynolds number $Re$. We prove that if the initial vorticity $Ω_{in}$ satisfies $\|Ω_{in}-(-1)\|_{H^σ}\leq εRe^{-1/3}$, then the solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation approaches to some shear flow which is also close to Couette flow for time $t\gg Re^{1/3}$ by a mixing-enhanced dissipation effect and then converges back to Couette flow when $t\to +\infty$.
In this paper, we study the transition threshold of the 3D Couette flow in Sobolev space at high Reynolds number $\text{Re}$. It was proved that if the initial velocity $v_0$ satisfies $\|v_0-(y,0,0)\|_{H^2}\le c_0\text{Re}^{-1}$, then the solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations is global in time and does not transition away from the Couette flow. This result confirms the transition threshold conjecture in physical literatures.
In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability of a steady circular flow created between two rotating concentric cylinders. The dynamics of the viscous fluid are described by 2D Navier-Stokes equations. We adopt scaling variables. For the rescaled equations, we prove that the steady flow (Taylor-Couette flow) is asymptotically stable up to a large perturbation of initial data. Back to the original 2D Navier-Stokes equations, this implies an improved transition threshold for the Taylor-Couette flow. The improvement is due to enhanced dissipation and new observations and constructions of weight…
We are concerned with the linear stability of the Couette flow for the non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with vanished shear viscosity in a domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. For a general initial data settled in Sobolev spaces, we obtain a Lyapunov type instability of the density, the temperature, the compressible part of the velocity field, and also obtain an inviscid damping for the incompressible part of the velocity field. Moreover, if the initial density, the initial temperature and the incompressible part of the initial velocity field satisfy some quality relation, …
In this paper, we study nonlinear stability of the 3D plane Couette flow $(y,0,0)$ at high Reynolds number ${Re}$ in a finite channel $\mathbb{T}\times [-1,1]\times \mathbb{T}$. It is well known that the plane Couette flow is linearly stable for any Reynolds number. However, it could become nonlinearly unstable and transition to turbulence for small but finite perturbations at high Reynolds number. This is so-called Sommerfeld paradox. One resolution of this paradox is to study the transition threshold problem, which is concerned with how much disturbance will lead to the instability of the fl…
In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid when some Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the body's boundary. The whole `viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body' system is assumed to occupy the full plane $\R^{2}$. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions with constant non-zero circulation at infinity.
In this work we study the long time, inviscid limit of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations near the periodic Couette flow, and in particular, we confirm at the nonlinear level the qualitative behavior predicted by Kelvin's 1887 linear analysis. At high Reynolds number Re, we prove that the solution behaves qualitatively like 2D Euler for times t \lesssim Re^(1/3), and in particular exhibits inviscid damping (e.g. the vorticity weakly approaches a shear flow). For times t \gtrsim Re^(1/3), which is sooner than the natural dissipative time scale O(Re), the viscosity becomes dominant and the streamwis…
In this paper, we prove the stability of Couette flow for 2D Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system without thermal diffusivity for the initial perturbation in Gevrey-$\frac{1}{s}$, ($1/3<s\leq 1$). The synergism of density mixing, vorticity mixing and velocity diffusion leads to the stability.
This paper establishes the nonlinear stability of the Couette flow for the 2D Boussinesq equations with only vertical dissipation. The Boussinesq equations concerned here model buoyancy-driven fluids such as atmospheric and oceanographic flows. Due to the presence of the buoyancy forcing, the energy of the standard Boussinesq equations could grow in time. It is the enhanced dissipation created by the linear non-self-adjoint operator $y\partial_x -ν\partial_{yy}$ in the perturbation equation that makes the nonlinear stability possible. When the initial perturbation from the Couette flow $(y, 0)…
In this work we study the evolution of the interface between two different fluids in two concentric cylinders when the velocity is given by the Navier-Stokes equation and one of the fluids is thin. We present a formal asymptotic derivation of the evolution equation for the interface under different scaling assumptions for the surface tension. We then study the different types of the stationary solutions and travelling waves for the resulting equation. In particular, we state a global well posedness result and using Center Manifold Theory, we obtain detailed information about the long time asym…
In one-dimensional unbounded domains, we prove global existence of strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes system for a viscous and heat conducting ideal polytropic gas, when the viscosity is constant and the heat conductivity $κ$ depends on the temperature $θ$ according to $κ=\barκθ^β(β>0)$. Note that the conditions imposed on the initial data are the same as those of the constant heat conductivity case ([Kazhikhov, A. V. Siberian Math. J. 23 (1982), 44-49]) and can be arbitrarily large. Therefore, our result generalizes Kazhikhov's result for the constant heat conductivity case to…
We consider the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional (1D) barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and large external force. Under a general assumption on the density-dependent viscosity, we prove that the Cauchy problem admits a unique global strong (classical) solution for the large initial data with vacuum. Moreover, the density is proved to be bounded from above time-independently. As a consequence, we obtain the large time behavior of the solution without external forces.
We consider the 2D Navier-Stokes equation on $\mathbb T \times \mathbb R$, with initial datum that is $\varepsilon$-close in $H^N$ to a shear flow $(U(y),0)$, where $\| U(y) - y\|_{H^{N+4}} \ll 1$ and $N>1$. We prove that if $\varepsilon \ll ν^{1/2}$, where $ν$ denotes the inverse Reynolds number, then the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation remains $\varepsilon$-close in $H^1$ to $(e^{t ν\partial_{yy}}U(y),0)$ for all $t>0$. Moreover, the solution converges to a decaying shear flow for times $t \gg ν^{-1/3}$ by a mixing-enhanced dissipation effect, and experiences a transient growth of gra…
We consider a stochastic model which describes the motion of a 2D incompressible fluid in a unbounded domain with viscosity and memory effects. This model is different from the classical stochastic Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations due to the absence of the Voigt term $ -αΔu_{t}$, and has a much weaker dissipation than the usual Navier-Stokes-Voigt model since only the memory viscoelasticity is present. We are interested in the global well-posedness and long-time behaviors of this model. We first investigate the well-posedness by using the classical Faedo-Galerkin method. Unlike the general method…
For the Stokes system in the half space, Kang [Math.~Ann.~2005] showed that a solution generated by a compactly supported, Hölder continuous boundary flux may have unbounded normal derivatives near the boundary. In this paper we first prove explicit global pointwise estimates of the above solution, showing in particular that it has finite global energy and its derivatives blow up everywhere on the boundary away from the flux. We then use the above solution as a profile to construct solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations which also have finite global energy and unbounded normal derivatives du…
We consider the zero-electron-mass limit for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in unbounded spatial domains. Assuming smallness of the viscosity coefficient and ill-prepared initial data, we show that the asymptotic limit is represented by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a Brinkman damping, in the case when viscosity is proportional to the electron-mass, and by the incompressible Euler system provided the viscosity is dominated by the electron mass. The proof is based on the RAGE theorem and dispersive estimates for acoustic waves, and on the concept of suitable weak solutions for…
