Visual sound source localization poses a significant challenge in identifying the semantic region of each sounding source within a video. Existing self-supervised and weakly supervised source localization methods struggle to accurately distinguish the semantic regions of each sounding object, particularly in multi-source mixtures. These methods often rely on audio-visual correspondence as guidance, which can lead to substantial performance drops in complex multi-source localization scenarios. The lack of access to individual source sounds in multi-source mixtures during training exacerbates the difficulty of learning effective audio-visual correspondence for localization. To address this limitation, in this paper, we propose incorporating the text modality as an intermediate feature guide using tri-modal joint embedding models (e.g., AudioCLIP) to disentangle the semantic audio-visual source correspondence in multi-source mixtures. Our framework, dubbed T-VSL, begins by predicting the class of sounding entities in mixtures. Subsequently, the textual representation of each sounding source is employed as guidance to disentangle fine-grained audio-visual source correspondence from multi-source mixtures, leveraging the tri-modal AudioCLIP embedding. This approach enables our framework to handle a flexible number of sources and exhibits promising zero-shot transferability to unseen classes during test time. Extensive experiments conducted on the MUSIC, VGGSound, and VGGSound-Instruments datasets demonstrate significant performance improvements over state-of-the-art methods. Code is released at https://github.com/enyac-group/T-VSL/tree/main
The performance of sound event detection methods can significantly degrade when they are used in unseen conditions (e.g. recording devices, ambient noise). Domain adaptation is a promising way to tackle this problem. In this paper, we present VOICe, the first dataset for the development and evaluation of domain adaptation methods for sound event detection. VOICe consists of mixtures with three different sound events ("baby crying", "glass breaking", and "gunshot"), which are over-imposed over three different categories of acoustic scenes: vehicle, outdoors, and indoors. Moreover, the mixtures …
Unsupervised audio-visual source localization aims at localizing visible sound sources in a video without relying on ground-truth localization for training. Previous works often seek high audio-visual similarities for likely positive (sounding) regions and low similarities for likely negative regions. However, accurately distinguishing between sounding and non-sounding regions is challenging without manual annotations. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective approach for Easy Visual Sound Localization, namely EZ-VSL, without relying on the construction of positive and/or negative regio…

In recent years, exploring effective sound separation (SSep) techniques to improve overlapping sound event detection (SED) attracts more and more attention. Creating accurate separation signals to avoid the catastrophic error accumulation during SED model training is very important and challenging. In this study, we first propose a novel selective pseudo-labeling approach, termed SPL, to produce high confidence separated target events from blind sound separation outputs. These target events are then used to fine-tune the original SED model that pre-trained on the sound mixtures in a multi-obje…
Source separation is the task to separate an audio recording into individual sound sources. Source separation is fundamental for computational auditory scene analysis. Previous work on source separation has focused on separating particular sound classes such as speech and music. Many of previous work require mixture and clean source pairs for training. In this work, we propose a source separation framework trained with weakly labelled data. Weakly labelled data only contains the tags of an audio clip, without the occurrence time of sound events. We first train a sound event detection system wi…
An onomatopoeic word, which is a character sequence that phonetically imitates a sound, is effective in expressing characteristics of sound such as duration, pitch, and timbre. We propose an environmental-sound-extraction method using onomatopoeic words to specify the target sound to be extracted. By this method, we estimate a time-frequency mask from an input mixture spectrogram and an onomatopoeic word using a U-Net architecture, then extract the corresponding target sound by masking the spectrogram. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can extract only the target sound cor…

Performing sound event detection on real-world recordings often implies dealing with overlapping target sound events and non-target sounds, also referred to as interference or noise. Until now these problems were mainly tackled at the classifier level. We propose to use sound separation as a pre-processing for sound event detection. In this paper we start from a sound separation model trained on the Free Universal Sound Separation dataset and the DCASE 2020 task 4 sound event detection baseline. We explore different methods to combine separated sound sources and the original mixture within the…

Our systems submitted to the DCASE2020 task~3: Sound Event Localization and Detection (SELD) are described in this report. We consider two systems: a single-stage system that solve sound event localization~(SEL) and sound event detection~(SED) simultaneously, and a two-stage system that first handles the SED and SEL tasks individually and later combines those results. As the single-stage system, we propose a unified training framework that uses an activity-coupled Cartesian DOA vector~(ACCDOA) representation as a single target for both the SED and SEL tasks. To efficiently estimate sound event…

As part of the 2016 public evaluation challenge on Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE 2016), the second task focused on evaluating sound event detection systems using synthetic mixtures of office sounds. This task, which follows the `Event Detection - Office Synthetic' task of DCASE 2013, studies the behaviour of tested algorithms when facing controlled levels of audio complexity with respect to background noise and polyphony/density, with the added benefit of a very accurate ground truth. This paper presents the task formulation, evaluation metrics, submitted sy…
In this work, we thoroughly evaluate the efficacy of pretrained neural networks as feature extractors for anomalous sound detection. In doing so, we leverage the knowledge that is contained in these neural networks to extract semantically rich features (representations) that serve as input to a Gaussian Mixture Model which is used as a density estimator to model normality. We compare feature extractors that were trained on data from various domains, namely: images, environmental sounds and music. Our approach is evaluated on recordings from factory machinery such as valves, pumps, sliders and …

Polyphonic sound event detection (polyphonic SED) is an interesting but challenging task due to the concurrence of multiple sound events. Recently, SED methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN) have shown promising performance. Generally, CNN are designed for local feature extraction while RNN are used to model the temporal dependency among these local features. Despite their success, it is still insufficient for existing deep learning techniques to separate individual sound event from their mixture, largely due to the overlapping characteristic o…
In this paper, we propose the use of spatial and harmonic features in combination with long short term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN) for automatic sound event detection (SED) task. Real life sound recordings typically have many overlapping sound events, making it hard to recognize with just mono channel audio. Human listeners have been successfully recognizing the mixture of overlapping sound events using pitch cues and exploiting the stereo (multichannel) audio signal available at their ears to spatially localize these events. Traditionally SED systems have only been using mono…
Sounds provide rich semantics, complementary to visual data, for many tasks. However, in practice, sounds from multiple sources are often mixed together. In this paper we propose a novel framework, referred to as MinusPlus Network (MP-Net), for the task of visual sound separation. MP-Net separates sounds recursively in the order of average energy, removing the separated sound from the mixture at the end of each prediction, until the mixture becomes empty or contains only noise. In this way, MP-Net could be applied to sound mixtures with arbitrary numbers and types of sounds. Moreover, while MP…

In the context of the Internet of Things (IoT), sound sensing applications are required to run on embedded platforms where notions of product pricing and form factor impose hard constraints on the available computing power. Whereas Automatic Environmental Sound Recognition (AESR) algorithms are most often developed with limited consideration for computational cost, this article seeks which AESR algorithm can make the most of a limited amount of computing power by comparing the sound classification performance em as a function of its computational cost. Results suggest that Deep Neural Networks…
In this paper we present an approach to polyphonic sound event detection in real life recordings based on bi-directional long short term memory (BLSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNNs). A single multilabel BLSTM RNN is trained to map acoustic features of a mixture signal consisting of sounds from multiple classes, to binary activity indicators of each event class. Our method is tested on a large database of real-life recordings, with 61 classes (e.g. music, car, speech) from 10 different everyday contexts. The proposed method outperforms previous approaches by a large margin, and the results a…
This work aims to investigate the use of deep neural network to detect commercial hobby drones in real-life environments by analyzing their sound data. The purpose of work is to contribute to a system for detecting drones used for malicious purposes, such as for terrorism. Specifically, we present a method capable of detecting the presence of commercial hobby drones as a binary classification problem based on sound event detection. We recorded the sound produced by a few popular commercial hobby drones, and then augmented this data with diverse environmental sound data to remedy the scarcity o…

Recent progress in deep learning has enabled many advances in sound separation and visual scene understanding. However, extracting sound sources which are apparent in natural videos remains an open problem. In this work, we present AudioScope, a novel audio-visual sound separation framework that can be trained without supervision to isolate on-screen sound sources from real in-the-wild videos. Prior audio-visual separation work assumed artificial limitations on the domain of sound classes (e.g., to speech or music), constrained the number of sources, and required strong sound separation or vis…

We present a method for simultaneously localizing multiple sound sources within a visual scene. This task requires a model to both group a sound mixture into individual sources, and to associate them with a visual signal. Our method jointly solves both tasks at once, using a formulation inspired by the contrastive random walk of Jabri et al. We create a graph in which images and separated sounds correspond to nodes, and train a random walker to transition between nodes from different modalities with high return probability. The transition probabilities for this walk are determined by an audio-…
Directional or Circular statistics are pertaining to the analysis and interpretation of directions or rotations. In this work, a novel probability distribution is proposed to model multidimensional sparse directional data. The Generalised Directional Laplacian Distribution (DLD) is a hybrid between the Laplacian distribution and the von Mises-Fisher distribution. The distribution's parameters are estimated using Maximum-Likelihood Estimation over a set of training data points. Mixtures of Directional Laplacian Distributions (MDLD) are also introduced in order to model multiple concentrations o…

Sound source localization is a typical and challenging task that predicts the location of sound sources in a video. Previous single-source methods mainly used the audio-visual association as clues to localize sounding objects in each image. Due to the mixed property of multiple sound sources in the original space, there exist rare multi-source approaches to localizing multiple sources simultaneously, except for one recent work using a contrastive random walk in the graph with images and separated sound as nodes. Despite their promising performance, they can only handle a fixed number of source…
Sounds reach one microphone in a stereo pair sooner than the other, resulting in an interaural time delay that conveys their directions. Estimating a sound's time delay requires finding correspondences between the signals recorded by each microphone. We propose to learn these correspondences through self-supervision, drawing on recent techniques from visual tracking. We adapt the contrastive random walk of Jabri et al. to learn a cycle-consistent representation from unlabeled stereo sounds, resulting in a model that performs on par with supervised methods on "in the wild" internet recordings. …

There exists an unequivocal distinction between the sound produced by a static source and that produced by a moving one, especially when the source moves towards or away from the microphone. In this paper, we propose to use this connection between audio and visual dynamics for solving two challenging tasks simultaneously, namely: (i) separating audio sources from a mixture using visual cues, and (ii) predicting the 3D visual motion of a sounding source using its separated audio. Towards this end, we present Audio Separator and Motion Predictor (ASMP) -- a deep learning framework that leverages…
Visual sound source separation aims at identifying sound components from a given sound mixture with the presence of visual cues. Prior works have demonstrated impressive results, but with the expense of large multi-stage architectures and complex data representations (e.g. optical flow trajectories). In contrast, we study simple yet efficient models for visual sound separation using only a single video frame. Furthermore, our models are able to exploit the information of the sound source category in the separation process. To this end, we propose two models where we assume that i) the category…
The objective of this paper is to recover the original component signals from a mixture audio with the aid of visual cues of the sound sources. Such task is usually referred as visually guided sound source separation. The proposed Cascaded Opponent Filter (COF) framework consists of multiple stages, which recursively refine the source separation. A key element in COF is a novel opponent filter module that identifies and relocates residual components between sources. The system is guided by the appearance and motion of the source, and, for this purpose, we study different representations based …
