Existing research based on deep learning has extensively explored the problem of daytime image dehazing. However, few studies have considered the characteristics of nighttime hazy scenes. There are two distinctions between nighttime and daytime haze. First, there may be multiple active colored light sources with lower illumination intensity in nighttime scenes, which may cause haze, glow and noise with localized, coupled and frequency inconsistent characteristics. Second, due to the domain discrepancy between simulated and real-world data, unrealistic brightness may occur when applying a dehazing model trained on simulated data to real-world data. To address the above two issues, we propose a semi-supervised model for real-world nighttime dehazing. First, the spatial attention and frequency spectrum filtering are implemented as a spatial-frequency domain information interaction module to handle the first issue. Second, a pseudo-label-based retraining strategy and a local window-based brightness loss for semi-supervised training process is designed to suppress haze and glow while achieving realistic brightness. Experiments on public benchmarks validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its superiority over state-of-the-art methods. In this paper, we introduce a new computer vision task called nighttime dehaze-enhancement. This task aims to jointly perform dehazing and lightness enhancement. Our task fundamentally differs from nighttime dehazing -- our goal is to jointly dehaze and enhance scenes, while nighttime dehazing aims to dehaze scenes under a nighttime setting. In order to facilitate further research on this task, we release a new benchmark dataset called Reside-$β$ Night dataset, consisting of 4122 nighttime hazed images from 2061 scenes and 2061 ground truth images. Moreover, we also propose a new network calle…
Haze removal is important for computational photography and computer vision applications. However, most of the existing methods for dehazing are designed for daytime images, and cannot always work well in the nighttime. Different from the imaging conditions in the daytime, images captured in nighttime haze condition may suffer from non-uniform illumination due to artificial light sources, which exhibit low brightness/contrast and color distortion. In this paper, we present a new nighttime hazy imaging model that takes into account both the non-uniform illumination from artificial light sources…

Conventional CNNs-based dehazing models suffer from two essential issues: the dehazing framework (limited in interpretability) and the convolution layers (content-independent and ineffective to learn long-range dependency information). In this paper, firstly, we propose a new complementary feature enhanced framework, in which the complementary features are learned by several complementary subtasks and then together serve to boost the performance of the primary task. One of the prominent advantages of the new framework is that the purposively chosen complementary tasks can focus on learning wea…

This paper proposes a scheme for single image haze removal based on the airlight field (ALF) estimation. Conventional image dehazing methods which are based on a physical model generally take the global atmospheric light as a constant. However, the constant-airlight assumption may be unsuitable for images with large sky regions, which causes unacceptable brightness imbalance and color distortion in recovery images. This paper models the atmospheric light as a field function, and presents a maximum a-priori (MAP) method for jointly estimating the airlight field, the transmission rate and the ha…

Image dehazing deals with the removal of undesired loss of visibility in outdoor images due to the presence of fog. Retinex is a color vision model mimicking the ability of the Human Visual System to robustly discount varying illuminations when observing a scene under different spectral lighting conditions. Retinex has been widely explored in the computer vision literature for image enhancement and other related tasks. While these two problems are apparently unrelated, the goal of this work is to show that they can be connected by a simple linear relationship. Specifically, most Retinex-based …
Near-infrared imaging can capture haze-free near-infrared gray images and visible color images, according to physical scattering models, e.g., Rayleigh or Mie models. However, there exist serious discrepancies in brightness and image structures between the near-infrared gray images and the visible color images. The direct use of the near-infrared gray images brings about another color distortion problem in the dehazed images. Therefore, the color distortion should also be considered for near-infrared dehazing. To reflect this point, this paper presents an approach of adding a new color regular…

Increasing the visibility of nighttime hazy images is challenging because of uneven illumination from active artificial light sources and haze absorbing/scattering. The absence of large-scale benchmark datasets hampers progress in this area. To address this issue, we propose a novel synthetic method called 3R to simulate nighttime hazy images from daytime clear images, which first reconstructs the scene geometry, then simulates the light rays and object reflectance, and finally renders the haze effects. Based on it, we generate realistic nighttime hazy images by sampling real-world light color…
Image signal processing (ISP) is crucial for camera imaging, and neural networks (NN) solutions are extensively deployed for daytime scenes. The lack of sufficient nighttime image dataset and insights on nighttime illumination characteristics poses a great challenge for high-quality rendering using existing NN ISPs. To tackle it, we first built a high-resolution nighttime RAW-RGB (NR2R) dataset with white balance and tone mapping annotated by expert professionals. Meanwhile, to best capture the characteristics of nighttime illumination light sources, we develop the CBUnet, a two-stage NN ISP t…

Monocular depth estimation aims at predicting depth from a single image or video. Recently, self-supervised methods draw much attention since they are free of depth annotations and achieve impressive performance on several daytime benchmarks. However, they produce weird outputs in more challenging nighttime scenarios because of low visibility and varying illuminations, which bring weak textures and break brightness-consistency assumption, respectively. To address these problems, in this paper we propose a novel framework with several improvements: (1) we introduce Priors-Based Regularization t…
Currently, mobile and IoT devices are in dire need of a series of methods to enhance 4K images with limited resource expenditure. The absence of large-scale 4K benchmark datasets hampers progress in this area, especially for dehazing. The challenges in building ultra-high-definition (UHD) dehazing datasets are the absence of estimation methods for UHD depth maps, high-quality 4K depth estimation datasets, and migration strategies for UHD haze images from synthetic to real domains. To address these problems, we develop a novel synthetic method to simulate 4K hazy images (including nighttime and…
Dark Channel Prior (DCP) is a widely recognized traditional dehazing algorithm. However, it may fail in bright region and the brightness of the restored image is darker than hazy image. In this paper, we propose an effective method to optimize DCP. We build a multiple linear regression haze-removal model based on DCP atmospheric scattering model and train this model with RESIDE dataset, which aims to reduce the unexpected errors caused by the rough estimations of transmission map t(x) and atmospheric light A. The RESIDE dataset provides enough synthetic hazy images and their corresponding grou…
