Recent advances in text-to-video generation have demonstrated the utility of powerful diffusion models. Nevertheless, the problem is not trivial when shaping diffusion models to animate static image (i.e., image-to-video generation). The difficulty originates from the aspect that the diffusion process of subsequent animated frames should not only preserve the faithful alignment with the given image but also pursue temporal coherence among adjacent frames. To alleviate this, we present TRIP, a new recipe of image-to-video diffusion paradigm that pivots on image noise prior derived from static image to jointly trigger inter-frame relational reasoning and ease the coherent temporal modeling via temporal residual learning. Technically, the image noise prior is first attained through one-step backward diffusion process based on both static image and noised video latent codes. Next, TRIP executes a residual-like dual-path scheme for noise prediction: 1) a shortcut path that directly takes image noise prior as the reference noise of each frame to amplify the alignment between the first frame and subsequent frames; 2) a residual path that employs 3D-UNet over noised video and static image latent codes to enable inter-frame relational reasoning, thereby easing the learning of the residual noise for each frame. Furthermore, both reference and residual noise of each frame are dynamically merged via attention mechanism for final video generation. Extensive experiments on WebVid-10M, DTDB and MSR-VTT datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our TRIP for image-to-video generation. We consider the problem of image-to-video translation, where an input image is translated into an output video containing motions of a single object. Recent methods for such problems typically train transformation networks to generate future frames conditioned on the structure sequence. Parallel work has shown that short high-quality motions can be generated by spatiotemporal generative networks that leverage temporal knowledge from the training data. We combine the benefits of both approaches and propose a two-stage generation framework where videos are generated from structures and then refi…

Although many video prediction methods have obtained good performance in low-resolution (64$\sim$128) videos, predictive models for high-resolution (512$\sim$4K) videos have not been fully explored yet, which are more meaningful due to the increasing demand for high-quality videos. Compared with low-resolution videos, high-resolution videos contain richer appearance (spatial) information and more complex motion (temporal) information. In this paper, we propose a Spatiotemporal Residual Predictive Model (STRPM) for high-resolution video prediction. On the one hand, we propose a Spatiotemporal E…

In this work, we propose a modeling technique for jointly training image and video generation models by simultaneously learning to map latent variables with a fixed prior onto real images and interpolate over images to generate videos. The proposed approach models the variations in representations using residual vectors encoding the change at each time step over a summary vector for the entire video. We utilize the technique to jointly train an image generation model with a fixed prior along with a video generation model lacking constraints such as disentanglement. The joint training enables t…

Fake portrait video generation techniques have been posing a new threat to the society with photorealistic deep fakes for political propaganda, celebrity imitation, forged evidences, and other identity related manipulations. Following these generation techniques, some detection approaches have also been proved useful due to their high classification accuracy. Nevertheless, almost no effort was spent to track down the source of deep fakes. We propose an approach not only to separate deep fakes from real videos, but also to discover the specific generative model behind a deep fake. Some pure dee…

Video understanding calls for a model to learn the characteristic interplay between static scene content and its dynamics: Given an image, the model must be able to predict a future progression of the portrayed scene and, conversely, a video should be explained in terms of its static image content and all the remaining characteristics not present in the initial frame. This naturally suggests a bijective mapping between the video domain and the static content as well as residual information. In contrast to common stochastic image-to-video synthesis, such a model does not merely generate arbitra…
Action Prediction is aimed to determine what action is occurring in a video as early as possible, which is crucial to many online applications, such as predicting a traffic accident before it happens and detecting malicious actions in the monitoring system. In this work, we address this problem by developing an end-to-end architecture that improves the discriminability of features of partially observed videos by assimilating them to features from complete videos. For this purpose, the generative adversarial network is introduced for tackling action prediction problem, which improves the recogn…
We propose the first reference-based video super-resolution (RefVSR) approach that utilizes reference videos for high-fidelity results. We focus on RefVSR in a triple-camera setting, where we aim at super-resolving a low-resolution ultra-wide video utilizing wide-angle and telephoto videos. We introduce the first RefVSR network that recurrently aligns and propagates temporal reference features fused with features extracted from low-resolution frames. To facilitate the fusion and propagation of temporal reference features, we propose a propagative temporal fusion module. For learning and evalua…

In this paper, we propose a learned video codec with a residual prediction network (RP-Net) and a feature-aided loop filter (LF-Net). For the RP-Net, we exploit the residual of previous multiple frames to further eliminate the redundancy of the current frame residual. For the LF-Net, the features from residual decoding network and the motion compensation network are used to aid the reconstruction quality. To reduce the complexity, a light ResNet structure is used as the backbone for both RP-Net and LF-Net. Experimental results illustrate that we can save about 10% BD-rate compared with previou…
In recent years, deep learning-based video manipulation methods have become widely accessible to masses. With little to no effort, people can easily learn how to generate deepfake videos with only a few victims or target images. This creates a significant social problem for everyone whose photos are publicly available on the Internet, especially on social media websites. Several deep learning-based detection methods have been developed to identify these deepfakes. However, these methods lack generalizability, because they perform well only for a specific type of deepfake method. Therefore, tho…
Although the video compression ratio nowadays becomes higher, the video coders such as H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, H.266/VVC always suffer from the video artifacts. In this paper, we design a neural network to enhance the quality of the compressed frame by leveraging the block information, called B-DRRN (Deep Recursive Residual Network with Block information). Firstly, an extra network branch is designed for leveraging the block information of the coding unit (CU). Moreover, to avoid a great increase in the network size, Recursive Residual structure and sharing weight techniques are applied. We als…

This paper introduces a framework for super-resolution of scalable video based on compressive sensing and sparse representation of residual frames in reconnaissance and surveillance applications. We exploit efficient compressive sampling and sparse reconstruction algorithms to super-resolve the video sequence with respect to different compression rates. We use the sparsity of residual information in residual frames as the key point in devising our framework. Moreover, a controlling factor as the compressibility threshold to control the complexity-performance trade-off is defined. Numerical exp…
With the widespread use of installed cameras, video-based monitoring approaches have seized considerable attention for different purposes like assisted living. Temporal redundancy and the sheer size of raw videos are the two most common problematic issues related to video processing algorithms. Most of the existing methods mainly focused on increasing accuracy by exploring consecutive frames, which is laborious and cannot be considered for real-time applications. Since videos are mostly stored and transmitted in compressed format, these kinds of videos are available on many devices. Compressed…
Recent learning-based inpainting algorithms have achieved compelling results for completing missing regions after removing undesired objects in videos. To maintain the temporal consistency among the frames, 3D spatial and temporal operations are often heavily used in the deep networks. However, these methods usually suffer from memory constraints and can only handle low resolution videos. We propose STRA-Net, a novel spatial-temporal residual aggregation framework for high resolution video inpainting. The key idea is to first learn and apply a spatial and temporal inpainting network on the dow…

We tackle the problem of person re-identification in video setting in this paper, which has been viewed as a crucial task in many applications. We present a novel method - Spatial-Temporal Synergic Residual Network (STSRN) for this problem. STSRN contains a spatial residual extractor, a temporal residual processor and a spatial-temporal smooth module. The smoother can alleviate sample noises along the spatial-temporal dimensions thus…

Shadow detection in a single image has received significant research interest in recent years. However, much fewer works have been explored in shadow detection over dynamic scenes. The bottleneck is the lack of a well-established dataset with high-quality annotations for video shadow detection. In this work, we collect a new video shadow detection dataset, which contains 120 videos with 11, 685 frames, covering 60 object categories, varying lengths, and different motion/lighting conditions. All the frames are annotated with a high-quality pixel-level shadow mask. To the best of our knowledge, …

Recently, deep learning based video super-resolution (SR) methods have achieved promising performance. To simultaneously exploit the spatial and temporal information of videos, employing 3-dimensional (3D) convolutions is a natural approach. However, straight utilizing 3D convolutions may lead to an excessively high computational complexity which restricts the depth of video SR models and thus undermine the performance. In this paper, we present a novel fast spatio-temporal residual network (FSTRN) to adopt 3D convolutions for the video SR task in order to enhance the performance while maintai…
Neural fields have emerged as a powerful paradigm for representing various signals, including videos. However, research on improving the parameter efficiency of neural fields is still in its early stages. Even though neural fields that map coordinates to colors can be used to encode video signals, this scheme does not exploit the spatial and temporal redundancy of video signals. Inspired by standard video compression algorithms, we propose a neural field architecture for representing and compressing videos that deliberately removes data redundancy through the use of motion information across v…

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have made impressive progress in many video recognition tasks such as video pose estimation and video object detection. However, CNN inference on video is computationally expensive due to processing dense frames individually. In this work, we propose a framework called Recurrent Residual Module (RRM) to accelerate the CNN inference for video recognition tasks. This framework has a novel design of using the similarity of the intermediate feature maps of two consecutive frames, to largely reduce the redundant computation. One unique property of the propo…

Our novel architecture generalizes ResNets for the spatiotemporal domain by introducing residual connections in two ways. In video compression, coding efficiency is improved by reusing pixels from previously decoded frames via motion and residual compensation. We define two levels of hierarchical redundancy in video frames: 1) first-order: redundancy in pixel space, i.e., similarities in pixel values across neighboring frames, which is effectively captured using motion and residual compensation, 2) second-order: redundancy in motion and residual maps due to smooth motion in natural videos. While most of the existing neural video coding literature addresses first-order redundancy, we tackle the problem of capturin…
We present an end-to-end trainable framework for P-frame compression in this paper. A joint motion vector (MV) and residual prediction network MV-Residual is designed to extract the ensembled features of motion representations and residual information by treating the two successive frames as inputs. The prior probability of the latent representations is modeled by a hyperprior autoencoder and trained jointly with the MV-Residual network. Specially, the spatially-displaced convolution is applied for video frame prediction, in which a motion kernel for each pixel is learned to generate predicted…
We present a method for decomposing the 3D scene flow observed from a moving stereo rig into stationary scene elements and dynamic object motion. Our unsupervised learning framework jointly reasons about the camera motion, optical flow, and 3D motion of moving objects. Three cooperating networks predict stereo matching, camera motion, and residual flow, which represents the flow component due to object motion and not from camera motion. Based on rigid projective geometry, the estimated stereo depth is used to guide the camera motion estimation, and the depth and camera motion are used to guide…

We study domain-specific video streaming. Specifically, we target a streaming setting where the videos to be streamed from a server to a client are all in the same domain and they have to be compressed to a small size for low-latency transmission. Several popular video streaming services, such as the video game streaming services of GeForce Now and Twitch, fall in this category. While conventional video compression standards such as H.264 are commonly used for this task, we hypothesize that one can leverage the property that the videos are all in the same domain to achieve better video quality…

These excitation mechanisms are designed following the spirit of curriculum learning and aim to reduce learning ambiguities at the beginning of training by selectively exciting feature activations using ground truth. Then we gradually reduce the weight of ground truth excitations by a curriculum rate and replace it by a curriculum complementary map for better and faster conve…
Existing approaches in video captioning concentrate on exploring global frame features in the uncompressed videos, while the free of charge and critical saliency information already encoded in the compressed videos is generally neglected. We propose a video captioning method which operates directly on the stored compressed videos. First, we obtain the spatial attention weights by extracting …

With the success of Deep ConvNets as an image analysis method, a lot of extensions of standard ConvNets were purposed to process variable length video data. In this work, we propose a novel recurrent ConvNet architecture called recurrent resid…
