We study entanglement growth in a harmonic oscillator chain subjected to the weak measurement of observables which have been smeared-out over a length scale $R$. We find that entanglement grows diffusively ($S \sim t^{1/2}$) for a large class of initial Gaussian states provided the measurement scale $R$ is sufficiently large. At late times $t \gtrsim \mathcal{O}(L^{2})$ the entropy relaxes towards an area-law value which we compute exactly. We propose a modified quasi-particle picture which accounts for all of these main features and agrees quantitatively well with our essentially exact numerical results. The quasiparticles are associated with the modes of a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian. At small wave-vector $k$, the quasiparticles transport entropy with a finite velocity, but have a lifetime scaling as $1/k^2$; the concurrence of these two conditions leads directly to the observed $t^{1/2}$ growth.

We consider the evolution of a quantum simple harmonic oscillator in a general Gaussian state under simultaneous time-continuous weak position and momentum measurements. We deduce the stochastic evolution equations for position and momentum expectation values and the covariance matrix elements from the system's characteristic function. By generalizing the Chantasri-Dressel-Jordan (CDJ) formalism (Chantasri et al.~2013 and 2015) to this continuous variable system, we construct its stochastic Hamiltonian and action. Action extremization gives us the equations for the most-likely readout paths an…
The state of a continuously monitored qubit evolves stochastically, exhibiting competition between coherent Hamiltonian dynamics and diffusive partial collapse dynamics that follow the measurement record. We couple these distinct types of dynamics together by linearly feeding the collected record for dispersive energy measurements directly back into a coherent Rabi drive amplitude. Such feedback turns the competition cooperative, and effectively stabilizes the qubit state near a target state. We derive the conditions for obtaining such dispersive state stabilization and verify the stabilizatio…

We investigate entanglement dynamics in continuously monitored open quantum systems featuring current-carrying non-equilibrium states. We focus on a prototypical one-dimensional model of boundary-driven non-interacting fermions with monitoring of the local density, whose average Lindblad dynamics features a well-studied ballistic to diffusive crossover in transport. Here we analyze the dynamics of the fermionic negativity, mutual information, and purity along different quantum trajectories. We show that monitoring this boundary-driven system enhances its entanglement negativity at long times, …
We present a formulation of measurement-based feedback control of a single quantum particle in one spatial dimension. An arbitrary linear combination of the position and momentum of the particle is continuously monitored, and feedback proportional to the measured signal is used to control the system. We derive a feedback master equation and discuss a general approach to computing the steady-state solutions for arbitrary potentials. For a quantum harmonic oscillator or a free particle, we show that it is possible to cool and confine the system using feedback that simultaneously damps the measur…
We uncover a dynamical entanglement transition in a monitored quantum system that is heralded by a local order parameter. Classically, chaotic systems can be stochastically controlled onto unstable periodic orbits and exhibit controlled and uncontrolled phases as a function of the rate at which the control is applied. We show that such control transitions persist in open quantum systems where control is implemented with local measurements and unitary feedback. Starting from a simple classical model with a known control transition, we define a quantum model that exhibits a diffusive transition …
