We have succeeded for the first time in synthesizing single crystals of nanolaminated borides (Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_2$AlB$_2$ in the entire Fe-Mn composition range using the Al self-flux method, and have established $T$-$x$, $H$-$T$ and three-dimensional $H$-$T$-$x$ magnetic phase diagrams from the results of magnetization measurements. The ferromagnetic correlation of Fe$_2$AlB$_2$ is weakened with the Mn substitution, whereas the antiferromagnetic correlation of Mn$_2$AlB$_2$ is enhanced with the Fe up to $x=0.65$. The spin direction in the magnetic ordered states changes from the $a$ to the $b$ axis with increasing Mn concentration and temperature. At $x$ = 0.31-0.46, there are three magnetic phases; ferromagnetic, antiferromganetic, and intermediate phases in between. At $x$ = 0.65 and 0.74, a spin-flop-like metamagnetic transition was observed at a finite field parallel to the spin direction. These observations indicate that in (Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_2$AlB$_2$ the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations coexist and the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy competes between the $a$ and $b$ axes.
We develop a model for ferromagnetic resonance in systems with competing uniaxial and cubic anisotropies. This model applies to (i) magnetic materials with both uniaxial and cubic anisotropies, and (ii) magnetic nanoparticles with effective core and surface anisotropies; We numerically compute the resonance frequency as a function of the field and the resonance field as a function of the direction of the applied field for an arbitrary ratio of cubic-to-uniaxial anisotropy. We also provide some approximate analytical expressions in the case of weak cubic anisotropy. We propose a method that use…
We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence,…
In search of novel, improved materials for magnetic data storage and spintronic devices, compounds that allow a tailoring of magnetic domain shapes and sizes are essential. Good candidates are materials with intrinsic anisotropies or competing interactions, as they are prone to host various domain phases that can be easily and precisely selected by external tuning parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Here, we utilize vector magnetic fields to visualize directly the magnetic anisotropy in the uniaxial ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B. We demonstrate a feasible control both globally and…
The perovskite rare-earth titanates are model Mott insulators with magnetic ground states that are very sensitive to structural distortions. These distortions couple strongly to the orbital degrees of freedom and, in principle, it should be possible to tune the superexchange and the magnetic transition with strain. We investigate the representative system (Y,La,Ca)TiO$_3$, which exhibits low crystallographic symmetry and no structural instabilities. From magnetic susceptibility measurements of the Curie temperature, we demonstrate direct, reversible and continuous control of ferromagnetism by …
In RBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} compounds (R is rare earth), a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition is accompanied by a giant magnetoresistance. We study the magnetization of detwinned GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} single crystals, and find a remarkable uniaxial anisotropy of Co^{3+} spins which is tightly linked with the chain oxygen ordering in GdO_{0.5} planes. Reflecting the underlying oxygen order, CoO_2 planes also develop a spin-state order consisting of Co^{3+} ions in alternating rows of S=1 and S=0 states. The magnetic structure appears to be composed of weakly coupled ferromagnetic ladders with Isin…
Molecular dynamics (MD) is employed to investigate the plastic deformation mechanisms of single crystalline yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ) nanopillars under uniaxial compression. Simulation results show that the nanoscale plastic deformation of YSTZ is strongly dependent on the crystallographic orientation of zirconia nanopillars. For the first time, the experimental explored tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation is reproduced by MD simulations in some particular loading directions. Three distinct mechanisms of dislocation, phase transformation, and a combination of dislo…
Magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) in doped Ce$_{2}$Co$_{17}$ and other competing structures was investigated using density functional theory. We confirmed that the MCA contribution from dumbbell Co sites is very negative. Replacing Co dumbbell atoms with a pair of Fe or Mn atoms greatly enhance the uniaxial anisotropy, which agrees quantitatively with experiment, and this enhancement arises from electronic-structure features near the Fermi level, mostly associated with dumbbell sites. With Co dumbbell atoms replaced by other elements, the variation of anisotropy is generally a collective eff…
The laser-induced precession of magnetization in (Ga,Mn)As samples with different magnetic anisotropy was studied by the time-resolved magneto-optical method. We observed that the dependence of the precession amplitude on the external magnetic field depends strongly on the magnetic anisotropy of (Ga,Mn)As and we explain this phenomenon in terms of competing cubic and uniaxial anisotropies. We also show that the corresponding anisotropy fields can be deduced from the magnetic field dependence of the precession frequency.
We report on the electric control of the magnetic anisotropy in an ultrathin ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As/(Ga,Mn)(As,P) bilayer with competing in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropies. The carrier distribution and therefore the strength of the effective anisotropy is controlled by the gate voltage of a field effect device. Anomalous Hall Effect measurements confirm that a depletion of carriers in the upper (Ga,Mn)As layer results in the decrease of the in-plane anisotropy. The uniaxial anisotropy field is found to decrease by a factor ~ 4 over the explored gate-voltage range, so that the transition t…
To guide improved properties coincident with reduction of critical materials in permanent magnets, we investigate via density functional theory (DFT) the intrinsic magnetic properties of a promising system, $R$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{11}$Ti$Z$ with $R$=Y, Ce and interstitial doping ($Z$=H, C, N). The magnetization $M$, Curie temperature $T_\text{C}$, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy $K$ calculated in local density approximation to DFT agree well with measurements. Site-resolved contributions to $K$ reveal that all three Fe sublattices promote uniaxial anisotropy in YFe$_{11}$Ti, while c…
Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, a Weyl semimetal that consists of layers of Kagome lattices, transitions from a high-temperature paramagnetic phase to a low-temperature ferromagnetic phase below 177 K. The phase transition occurs through an intermediate non-trivial magnetic phase, the so-called "A"-phase just below the Curie temperature. The "A"-phase was earlier linked with a competing anti-ferromagnetic phase, a spin-glass phase and certain indirect measurements indicated the possibility of magnetic Skyrmions in this phase. We have imaged the magnetic domain structure in a single crystal of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S…
Three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnets with random magnetic anisotropy (RMA) experimentally studied to date do not have random single-ion anisotropies, but rather have competing two-dimensional and three-dimensional exchange interactions which can obscure the authentic effects of RMA. The magnetic phase diagram Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$F$_{2}$ epitaxial thin films with true random single-ion anisotropy was deduced from magnetometry and neutron scattering measurements and analyzed using mean field theory. Regions with uniaxial, oblique and easy plane anisotropies were identified. A RMA-induced glass …
The single layered manganite Pr$_{0.22}$Sr$_{1.78}$MnO$_4$ undergoes structural transition from high temperature tetragonal phase to low temperature orthorhombic phase below room temperature. The orthorhombic phase was reported to have two structural variants with slightly different lattice parameters and Mn-3$d$ levels show orbital ordering within both the variants, albeit having mutually perpendicular ordering axis. In addition to orbital ordering, the orthorhombic variants also order antiferromagnetically with different Néel temperatures. Our magnetic investigation on the polycrystalline sa…
Magnetic properties of heterometallic warwickites $MgFeBO_4$, $Mg_{0.5}Co_{0.5}FeBO_4$, and $CoFeBO_4$ are presented, highlighting the effect of Co substitution on the magnetic properties of these compounds. The analysis of magnetization and heat capacity data has shown that these compounds exhibit a spin-glass transition below $T_{SG}$=10, 20 and 22 K, respectively. Using zero field ac susceptibility as entanglement witness we find that the low dimensional magnetic behavior above $T_{SG}$ show quantum entanglement behavior $χ(T)\varpropto T^{-α(T)}$ up to $T_E$ = 130K. The $α$ parameters have…
Considering the recent breakthroughs in the synthesis of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials from layered bulk structures, ternary layered transition metal borides, known as MAB phases, have come under scrutiny as a means of obtaining novel 2D transition metal borides, so-called MBene. Here, based on a set of phonon calculations, we show the dynamic stability of many Al-containing MAB phases, MAlB (M = Ti, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Tc), M$_2$AlB$_2$ (Sc, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Tc, Fe, Rh, Ni), M$_3$Al$_2$B$_2$ (M = Sc, T, Zr, Hf, Cr, Mn, Tc, Fe, Ru, Ni), M$_3$AlB$_4$ (M = Sc, Ti, Z…
Single crystals of the layered perovskite GdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} (GBCO) have been grown by the floating-zone method, and their transport, magnetic, and structural properties have been studied in detail over a wide range of oxygen contents. The obtained data are used to establish a rich phase diagram centered at the "parent'' compound GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} -- an insulator with Co ions in the 3+ state. An attractive feature of GBCO is that it allows a precise and continuous doping of CoO_{2} planes with either electrons or holes, spanning a wide range from the charge-ordered insulator at 50% electron dop…
Complex magnetic order arises due to the competition of different interactions between the magnetic moments. Recently, there has been an increased interest in such states not only to unravel the fundamental physics involved, but also with regards to applications exploiting their unique interplay with moving electrons. Whereas it is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that has attracted much attention because of its nature to induce non-collinear magnetic order including magnetic-field stabilized skyrmions, it is the frustration of exchange interactions that can drive magnetic order dow…
