Unmanned aerial vehicles are becoming common and have many productive uses. However, their increased prevalence raises safety concerns -- how can we protect restricted airspace? Knowing the type of unmanned aerial vehicle can go a long way in determining any potential risks it carries. For instance, fixed-wing craft can carry more weight over longer distances, thus potentially posing a more significant threat. This paper presents a machine learning model for classifying unmanned aerial vehicles as quadrotor, hexarotor, or fixed-wing. Our approach effectively applies a Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) neural network for the purpose of time series classification. We performed experiments to test the effects of changing the timestamp sampling method and addressing the imbalance in the class distribution. Through these experiments, we identified the top-performing sampling and class imbalance fixing methods. Averaging the macro f-scores across 10 folds of data, we found that the majority quadrotor class was predicted well (98.16%), and, despite an extreme class imbalance, the model could also predicted a majority of fixed-wing flights correctly (73.15%). Hexarotor instances were often misclassified as quadrotors due to the similarity of multirotors in general (42.15%). However, results remained relatively stable across certain methods, which prompted us to analyze and report on their tradeoffs. The supplemental material for this paper, including the code and data for running all the experiments and generating the results tables, is available at https://osf.io/mnsgk/.

Radio Environmental Maps (REMs) are a powerful tool for enhancing the performance of various communication and networked agents. However, generating REMs is a laborious undertaking, especially in complex 3-Dimensional (3D) environments, such as indoors. To address this issue, we propose a system for autonomous generation of fine-grained REMs of indoor 3D spaces. In the system, multiple small indoor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are sequentially used for 3D sampling of signal quality indicators. The collected readings are streamlined to a Machine Learning (ML) system for its training and, onc…
Energy management is a critical aspect of risk assessment for Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flights, as a depleted battery during a flight brings almost guaranteed vehicle damage and a high risk of human injuries or property damage. Predicting the amount of energy a flight will consume is challenging as routing, weather, obstacles, and other factors affect the overall consumption. We develop a deep energy model for a UAV that uses Temporal Convolutional Networks to capture the time varying features while incorporating static contextual information. Our energy model is trained on a real world d…
In this paper, we tackle the problem of Unmanned Aerial (UA V) path planning in complex and uncertain environments by designing a Model Predictive Control (MPC), based on a Long-Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network integrated into the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm. In the proposed solution, LSTM-MPC operates as a deterministic policy within the DDPG network, and it leverages a predicting pool to store predicted future states and actions for improved robustness and efficiency. The use of the predicting pool also enables the initialization of the critic network, leading to improved co…
Safe and efficient path planning is crucial for autonomous mobile robots. A prerequisite for path planning is to have a comprehensive understanding of the 3D structure of the robot's environment. On MAVs this is commonly achieved using low-cost sensors, such as stereo or RGB-D cameras. These sensors may fail to provide depth measurements in textureless or IR-absorbing areas and have limited effective range. In path planning, this results in inefficient trajectories or failure to recognize a feasible path to the goal, hence significantly impairing the robot's mobility. Recent advances in deep l…
Aerial robots are increasingly being utilized for environmental monitoring and exploration. However, a key challenge is efficiently planning paths to maximize the information value of acquired data as an initially unknown environment is explored. To address this, we propose a new approach for informative path planning based on deep reinforcement learning (RL). Combining recent advances in RL and robotic applications, our method combines tree search with an offline-learned neural network predicting informative sensing actions. We introduce several components making our approach applicable for r…
