Here we present high spectral resolution $\textit{JWST}$ NIRSpec observations of GN42437, a low-mass (log(M$_\ast/M_\odot)=7.9$), compact ($r_e < 500$pc), extreme starburst galaxy at $z=5.59$ with 13 emission line detections. GN42437 has a low-metallicity (5-10% Z$_\odot$) and its rest-frame H$α$ equivalent width suggests nearly all of the observed stellar mass formed within the last 3 Myr. GN42437 has an extraordinary 7$σ$ significant [Ne V] 3427 $\mathring{\rm A}$ detection. The [Ne V] line has a rest-frame equivalent width of $11\pm2\mathring{\rm A}$, [Ne V]/H$α=0.04\pm0.007$, [Ne V]/[Ne III] 3870$\mathring{\rm A} = 0.26\pm0.04$, and [Ne V]/He II 4687 $\mathring{\rm A} = 1.2\pm0.5$. Ionization from massive stars, shocks, or high-mass X-ray binaries cannot simultaneously produce these [Ne V] and low-ionization line ratios. Reproducing the complete nebular structure requires both massive stars and accretion onto a black hole. We do not detect broad lines nor do the traditional diagnostics indicate that GN42437 has an accreting black hole. Thus, the very-high-ionization emission lines powerfully diagnose faint narrow-line black holes at high-redshift. We approximate the black hole mass in a variety of ways as log(M$_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) \sim 5-7$. This black hole mass is consistent with local relations between the black hole mass and the observed velocity dispersion, but significantly more massive than the stellar mass would predict. Very-high-ionization emission lines may reveal samples to probe the formation and growth of the first black holes in the universe.
To investigate the potential abundance and impact of nuclear black holes (BHs) during reionization, we generate a neural network that estimates their masses and accretion rates by training it on 23 properties of galaxies harbouring them at $z=6$ in the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Massive-Black II. We then populate all galaxies in the simulation from $z=18$ to $z=5$ with BHs from this network. As the network allows to robustly extrapolate to BH masses below those of the BH seeds, we predict a population of faint BHs with a turnover-free luminosity function, while retaining the bright…
Motivated by the stellar fossil record of Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies, we show that the star-forming ancestors of the faintest ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs; ${\rm M}_{\rm V}$ $\sim -2$ or ${\rm M}_{\star}$ $\sim 10^{2}$ at $z=0$) had ultra-violet (UV) luminosities of ${\rm M}_{\rm UV}$ $\sim -3$ to $-6$ during reionization ($z\sim6-10$). The existence of such faint galaxies has substantial implications for early epochs of galaxy formation and reionization. If the faint-end slopes of the UV luminosity functions (UVLFs) during reionization are steep ($α\lesssim-2$) to ${\rm M}_{\rm UV}$ …
Ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray photons from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can ionize hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM). We solve radiative transfer around AGNs in high redshift to evaluate the 21-cm line emission from the neutral hydrogen in the IGM and obtain the radial profile of the brightness temperature in the epoch of reionization. The ionization profile extends over 10 [Mpc] comoving distance which can be observed in the order of 10 [arcmin]. From estimation of the radio galaxy number counts with high sensitivity observation through the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), we investigate …
We present a new method to quantify the value of the escape fraction of ionizing photons, and the existence of ultra-faint galaxies clustered around brighter objects during the epoch of cosmic reionization, using the diffuse Ly$α$, continuum and H$α$ emission observed around galaxies at $z\sim6$. We model the surface brightness profiles of the diffuse halos considering the fluorescent emission powered by ionizing photons escaping from the central galaxies, and the nebular emission from satellite star-forming sources, by extending the formalisms developed in Mas-Ribas & Dijkstra (2016) and Mas-…
Using numerical cosmological simulations completed under the "Cosmic Reionization On Computers" (CROC) project, I explore theoretical predictions for the faint end of the galaxy UV luminosity functions at $z\geq 6$. A commonly used Schechter function approximation with the magnitude cut at $M_{\rm CUT}\sim-13$ provides a reasonable fit to the actual luminosity function of simulated galaxies. When the Schechter functional form is forced on the luminosity functions from the simulations, the magnitude cut $M_{\rm CUT}$ is found to vary between $-12$ and $-14$ with a mild redshift dependence. An a…

Within one billion years of the Big Bang, intergalactic hydrogen was ionized by sources emitting ultraviolet and higher energy photons. This was the final phenomenon to globally affect all the baryons (visible matter) in the Universe. It is referred to as cosmic reionization and is an integral component of cosmology. It is broadly expected that intrinsically faint galaxies were the primary ionizing sources due to their abundance in this epoch. However, at the highest redshifts ($z>7.5$; lookback time 13.1 Gyr), all galaxies with spectroscopic confirmations to date are intrinsically bright and,…
We present the star formation history (SFH) of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy based on deep archive $B$,$I$ photometry taken with Suprime-Cam at Subaru telescope focusing our analysis on the inner region of the galaxy, fully located within the core radius. Within the errors of our SFH we have not detected any metallicity gradient along the considered radial distance interval. As a main result of this work we can state that the Sextans dwarf spheroidal stopped forming stars less than $\sim1.3$ Gyr after Big Bang in correspondance to the end of the reionization epoch. We have been able to c…

The reionization of the intergalactic medium at redshifts $z\gtrsim 6$ is expected to have a lasting impact on galaxies residing in low-mass dark matter halos. Unable to accrete or retain gas photo-heated to temperatures $T \gtrsim 10^4$ K, the star formation histories of faint galaxies in the early Universe are expected to decline as they exhaust their gas supply, resulting in a turn-over in the galaxy luminosity function (LF) and a potential solution to the missing satellites problem in the local group. Unfortunately, there are several challenges to constraining `reionization feedback' empir…
While most of the inter-galactic medium (IGM) today is permeated by ionized hydrogen, it was largely filled with neutral hydrogen for the first 700 million years after the Big Bang. The process that ionized the IGM (cosmic reionization) is expected to be spatially inhomogeneous, with fainter galaxies playing a significant role. However, we still have only a few direct constraints on the reionization process. Here we report the first spectroscopic confirmation of two galaxies and very likely a third galaxy in a group (hereafter EGS77) at redshift z = 7.7, merely 680 Myrs after the Big Bang. The…
Recent measurements of the Luminosity Function (LF) of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR, $z\gsim6$) indicate a very steep increase of the number density of low-mass galaxies populating the LF faint-end. However, as star formation in low-mass halos can be easily depressed or even quenched by ionizing radiation, a turnover is expected at some faint UV magnitudes. Using a physically-motivated analytical model, we quantify reionization feedback effects on the LF faint-end shape. We find that if reionization feedback is neglected, the power-law Schechter parameterization characterizing th…
We present new results from the widest narrow band survey search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters at z=5.7, just after reionization. We survey a total of 7 deg$^2$ spread over the COSMOS, UDS and SA22 fields. We find over 11,000 line emitters, out of which 514 are robust Lya candidates at z=5.7 within a volume of 6.3x10$^6$ Mpc$^3$. Our Lya emitters span a wide range in Lya luminosities, from faint to bright (L$_{\rm Lyα}\sim10^{42.5-44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and rest-frame equivalent widths (EW$_0$~25-1000 Å) in a single, homogeneous data-set. By combining all our fields we find that the faint end slo…
Recent studies have revealed intense UV metal emission lines in a modest sample of z>7 Lyman-alpha emitters, indicating a hard ionizing spectrum is present. If such high ionization features are shown to be common, it may indicate that extreme radiation fields play a role in regulating the visibility of Lyman-alpha in the reionization era. Here we present deep near-infrared spectra of seven galaxies with Lyman-alpha emission at 5.4<z<8.7 (including a newly-confirmed lensed galaxy at z=6.031) and three bright z>7 photometric targets. In nine sources we do not detect UV metal lines. However in th…

We report the discovery of an ultrafaint dwarf (UFD) galaxy, Pegasus W, located on the far side of the Milky Way-M31 system and outside the virial radius of M31. The distance to the galaxy is 915 (+60/-91) kpc, measured using the luminosity of horizontal branch (HB) stars identified in Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging. The galaxy has a half-light radius (r_h) of 100 (+11/-13) pc, M_V = -7.20 (+0.17/-0.16) mag, and a present-day stellar mass of 6.5 (+1.1/-1.4) x 10^4 Msun. We identify sources in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) that may be younger than ~500 Myr suggesting late-time star …
The SPT0311-58 system at z=6.900 is an extremely massive structure within the reionization epoch, and offers a chance to understand the formation of galaxies in an extreme peak in the primordial density field. We present 70mas Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the dust continuum and CII 158um emission in the central pair of galaxies and reach physical resolution ~100-350pc, among the most detailed views of any reionization-era system to date. The observations resolve the source into at least a dozen kiloparsec-size clumps. The global kinematics and high turbulent vel…
We present a new method to study the contribution of faint sources to the UV background using the 1D correlation of metal absorbers with the intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission in a Quasi Stellar Object (QSO) sightline. We take advantage of a sample of $25$ high signal-to-noise ratio QSO spectra to retrieve $150$ triply-ionised carbon (\cfour) absorbers at $4.5\lesssim z\lesssim 6.2$, of which $37$ systems whose expected H{~\small I} absorption lie in the Lyman-$α$ forest. We derive improved constraints on the cosmic density of \cfour \,at $4.3< z < 6.2$ and infer from abundance-matching t…
Recent observations have revealed the presence of strong CIII] emission (EW$_{\rm{CIII]}}>20$ Å) in $z>6$ galaxies, the origin of which remains unclear. In an effort to understand the nature of these line emitters, we have initiated a survey targeting CIII] emission in gravitationally-lensed reionization era analogs identified in HST imaging of clusters from the RELICS survey. Here we report initial results on four galaxies selected to have low stellar masses (2-8$\times$10$^7$ M$_\odot$) and J$_{125}$-band flux excesses indicative of intense [OIII]+H$β$ emission (EW$_{\rm{[OIII]+Hβ}}$=500-200…

We present specific star-formation rates for 40 UV-bright galaxies at $z\sim7-8$ observed as part of the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) ALMA large program. The sSFRs are derived using improved measures of SFR and stellar masses, made possible by measurements of far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission and [CII]-based spectroscopic redshifts. For each source in the sample, we derive stellar masses from SED fitting and total SFRs from calibrations of the UV and FIR emission. The median sSFR is $18_{-5}^{+7}$ Gyr$^{-1}$, significantly larger than literature measurements lackin…

Understanding Ly$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) can be a key to reveal cosmic reionization and galaxy formation in the early Universe. Based on halo merger trees and Ly$α$ radiation transfer calculations, we model redshift evolution of LAEs and their observational properties at $z \ge 6$. We consider ionized bubbles associated with individual LAEs and IGM transmission of Ly$α$ photons. We find that Ly$α$ luminosity tightly correlates with halo mass and stellar mass, while the relation with star formation rate has a large dispersion. Comparing our models with the observed luminosity function by Ko…

We discuss the possible origin of the double-peaked profiles recently observed in Lyman-Alpha Emitters (LAEs) at the epoch of reionization ($z \gtrsim 6.5$) from obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN). Combining the extent of the Lyman-$α$ near-zones estimated from the blue peak velocity offset in these galaxies, with the ionizing emissivity of quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$, we forecast the intrinsic UV and X-ray luminosities of the AGN needed to give rise to their double-peaked profiles. We also estimate the extent of the obscuration of the AGN by comparing their luminosities to those of similar qu…
Galaxies in the reionization-era have been shown to have prominent [OIII]+H$β$ emission. Little is known about the gas conditions and radiation field of this population, making it challenging to interpret the spectra emerging at $z\gtrsim6$. Motivated by this shortcoming, we have initiated a large MMT spectroscopic survey identifying rest-frame optical emission lines in 227 intense [OIII] emitting galaxies at $1.3<z<2.4$. This sample complements the MOSDEF and KBSS surveys, extending to much lower stellar masses ($10^7-10^8 M_\odot$) and larger specific star formation rates ($5-300$ Gyr$^{-1}$…
We introduce a model for the explicit evolution of interstellar dust in a cosmological galaxy formation simulation. We post-process a simulation from the Cosmic Reionization on Computers project (CROC, Gnedin 2014), integrating an ordinary differential equation for the evolution of the dust-to-gas ratio along pathlines in the simulation sampled with a tracer particle technique. This model incorporates the effects of dust grain production in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star winds and supernovae (SN), grain growth due to the accretion of heavy elements from the gas phase of the interstellar me…
We present new observations of sixteen bright ($r=19-21$) gravitationally lensed galaxies at $z\simeq 1-3$ selected from the CASSOWARY survey. Included in our sample is the $z=1.42$ galaxy CSWA-141, one of the brightest known reionization-era analogs at high redshift (g=20.5), with a large sSFR (31.2 Gyr$^{-1}$) and an [OIII]+H$β$ equivalent width (EW$_{\rm{[OIII]+Hβ}}$=730~Å) that is nearly identical to the average value expected at $z\simeq 7-8$. In this paper, we investigate the rest-frame UV nebular line emission in our sample with the goal of understanding the factors that regulate strong…
A fundamental requirement for reionizing the Universe is that a sufficient fraction of the ionizing photons emitted by galaxies successfully escapes into the intergalactic medium. However, due to the scarcity of high-redshift observational data, the sources driving reionization remain uncertain. In this work we calculate the ionizing escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc}$) of reionization-era galaxies from the state-of-the-art THESAN simulations, which combine an accurate radiation-hydrodynamic solver AREPO-RT with the well-tested IllustrisTNG galaxy formation model to self-consistently simulate both…
We present Keck/MOSFIRE spectra of the diagnostic nebular emission lines [OIII]5007,4959, [OII]3727, and H-beta for a sample of 15 redshift z=3.1-3.7 Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs) and Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). In conjunction with spectra from other surveys, we confirm earlier indications that LAEs have a much higher [OIII]/[OII] line ratio than is seen in similar redshift LBGs. By comparing their distributions on a [OIII]/[OII] versus R23 diagram, we demonstrate that this difference cannot arise solely because of their lower metallicities but most likely is due to a harder ionizing spectrum. Usi…
The escape of ionizing Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons requires the existence of low-N_HI sightlines, which also promote escape of Lyman-Alpha (Lya). We use a suite of 2500 Lya Monte-Carlo radiative transfer simulations through models of dusty, clumpy interstellar (`multiphase') media from Gronke & Dijkstra (2016), and compare the escape fractions of Lya [f_esc(Lya)] and LyC radiation [f_esc(LyC)]. We find that f_esc(LyC) and f_esc(Lya) are correlated: galaxies with a low f_esc(Lya) consistently have a low f_esc(LyC), while galaxies with a high f_esc(Lya) exhibit a large dispersion in f_esc(LyC)…
Modeling Dust Production, Growth, and Destruction in Reionization-Era Galaxies with the CROC Simulations II: Predicting the Dust Content of High-Redshift Galaxies
Ultra-faint galaxies are hosted by small dark matter halos with shallow gravitational potential wells, hence their star formation activity is more sensitive to feedback effects. The shape of the faint-end of the high-$z$ galaxy luminosity function (LF) contains important information on star formation and its interaction with the reionization process during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). High-$z$ galaxies with $M_{\rm UV}\gtrsim-17$ have only recently become accessible thanks to the Frontier Fields (FFs) survey combining deep {\it HST} imaging and the gravitational lensing effect. In this pap…
The Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) is a cycle-7 ALMA Large Program (LP) that is identifying and performing a first characterization of many of the most luminous star-forming galaxies known in the z>6.5 universe. REBELS is providing this probe by systematically scanning 40 of the brightest UV-selected galaxies identified over a 7-deg**2 area for bright 158-micron [CII] and 88-micron [OIII] lines and dust-continuum emission. Selection of the 40 REBELS targets was done by combining our own and other photometric selections, each of which is subject to extensive vetting using…
The protagonists of cosmic reionization remain elusive. Faint star-forming galaxies are leading candidates because they are numerous and may have significant ionizing photon escape fractions ($f_{esc}$). Here we update this picture via an empirical model that successfully predicts latest observations (e.g., the drop in star-formation density at z>8). We generate an ionizing spectrum for each galaxy in our model and constrain $f_{esc}$ using latest measurements of the reionization timeline (e.g., Ly$α$ damping of quasars and galaxies at z>7). Assuming a constant $f_{esc}$, we find $M_{UV}$<-13.…
