We study the constraints on primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) in light of the global 21-cm signal observed during the dark ages. Primordial magnetic fields can heat the intergalactic medium (IGM) via magnetohydrodynamic effects. We investigate the impact of magnetic heating on the dark ages global 21-cm signal and constrain the present-day strength of primordial magnetic fields and their spectral indices. Since there were no stars during the Dark Ages, measuring the global 21-cm signal can provide pristine cosmological information. However, detecting this signal using ground-based telescopes is challenging. Several lunar and space-based experiments, such as FARSIDE, DAPPER, and FarView, have been proposed to detect the signal in future. Our findings indicate that measuring the 21-cm global signal during the Dark Ages can provide stronger bounds compared to the existing constraints from Planck 2016. Specifically, the bounds are independent of astrophysical uncertainties and stronger for spectral indices $-2.84 \leq n_B \leq -1.58$. Additionally, we explore the dark-ages consistency ratio, which can identify any non-standard heating of the IGM by measuring the 21-cm signal at only three different redshifts. This approach could complement future experiments aimed at detecting the Dark Ages global 21-cm signal.
We study the signature of primordial non-Gaussianity imprinted on the power spectrum of the 21-cm line differential brightness temperature during dark ages. Employing the perturbative treatment of gravitational clustering, we quantitatively estimate the effects of the non-Gaussian and one-loop corrections on the 21-cm power spectrum. The potential impact of the use of the 21-cm power spectrum for the constraint on local-type primordial non-Gaussianity is investigated based on the Fisher matrix analysis. Our results show that the 21-cm power spectrum for an array with a baseline of several tens…
Primordial molecules were formed during the Dark Ages, i.e. the time between recombination and reionization in the early Universe. The purpose of this article is to analyze the formation of primordial molecules based on heavy elements during the Dark Ages, with elemental abundances taken from different nucleosynthesis models. We present calculations of the full non-linear equation set governing the primordial chemistry. We consider the evolution of 45 chemical species and use an implicit multistep method of variable order of precision with an adaptive stepsize control. We find that the most ab…
Primordial black hole production in the mass range $10-10^4 \,{\rm M_\odot}$ is motivated respectively by interpretations of the LIGO/Virgo observations of binary black hole mergers and by their ability to seed intermediate black holes which would account for the presence of supermassive black holes at very high redshift. Their existence would imply a boost in the primordial power spectrum if they were produced by overdensities reentering the horizon and collapsing after single-field inflation. This, together with their associated Poisson fluctuations would cause a boost in the matter power sp…

Independent lines of evidence suggest that the first stars, which ended the cosmic dark ages, came in pairs, rather than singly. This could change the prevailing view that the early Universe had a Swiss-cheese-like appearance.
A measurement of primordial non-gaussianity will be of paramount importance to distinguish between different models of inflation. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy observations have set unprecedented bounds on the non-gaussianity parameter f_NL but the interesting regime f_NL <~ 1 is beyond their reach. Brightness-temperature fluctuations in the 21-cm line during the dark ages (z ~ 30-100) are a promising successor to CMB studies, giving access to a much larger number of modes. They are, however, intrinsically non-linear, which results in secondary non-gaussianities orders of magnit…
We investigate tomography of 21-cm brightness temperature fluctuations during the Dark Ages as a probe for constraining primordial non-Gaussianity. We expand the 21- cm brightness temperature up to cubic order in perturbation theory and improve previous models of the signal by including the effect of the free electron fraction. Using modified standard perturbation theory methods that include baryonic pressure effects we derive an improved secondary bispectrum and for the first time derive the secondary trispectrum of 21-cm brightness temperature fluctuations. We then forecast the amount of inf…
The next generation 2 micron sky survey should target nascent galaxies in the epoch of reionization for spectroscopic followup on large telescopes. A 2.5 metre telescope at a site on the antarctic plateau has advantages for this purpose and for southern hemisphere infrared surveys generally.
Constraints on dark matter annihilation or decay offer unique insights into the nature of dark matter. We illustrate how surveys dedicated to detect the highly redshifted 21 cm signal from the dark ages will offer a new window into properties of particle dark matter. The 21 cm intensity mapping signal and its fluctuations are sensitive to energy injection from annihilation or decay of long-lived particles in a way that is complementary to other probes. We present forecasted constraints from forthcoming and next-generation radio surveys. We show that, while SKA might be capable of a detection f…
We investigate the impact of radiation from primordial black holes (PBHs), in the mass range of $10^{15} \lesssim M_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{17}~\rm g$ and $10^{2} \lesssim M_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{4}~M_{\odot}$, on the 21-cm angular-power spectrum in the dark ages. PBHs in the former mass range effect the 21-cm angular-power spectrum through the evaporation known as Hawking radiation, while the radiation from the accretion process in the latter mass range. In the dark ages, radiation from PBHs can increase the ionization fraction and temperature of the intergalactic medium, change the global 21…
Global signal in the redshifted hydrogen 21-cm line from the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn: Dependence on the nature of dark matter and modeling of first light
Observations of the frequency dependence of the global brightness temperature of the redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen may be possible with single dipole experiments. In this paper, we develop a Fisher matrix formalism for calculating the sensitivity of such instruments to the 21 cm signal from reionization and the dark ages. We show that rapid reionization histories with duration delta z< 2 can be constrained, provided that local foregrounds can be well modelled by low order polynomials. It is then shown that observations in the range nu = 50 - 100 MHz can feasibly constrain the Lyman…
The second-order vector mode is inevitably induced from the coupling of first-order scalar modes in cosmological perturbation theory and might hinder a possible detection of primordial gravitational waves from inflation through 21cm lensing observations. Here, we investigate the weak lensing signal in 21cm photons emitted by neutral hydrogen atoms in the dark ages induced by the second-order vector mode by decomposing the deflection angle of the 21cm lensing signal into the gradient and curl modes. The curl mode is a good tracer of the cosmological vector and tensor modes since the scalar mode…
The Dark Ages, probed by the redshifted 21-cm signal, is the ideal epoch for a new rigorous test of the standard LCDM cosmological model. Divergences from that model would indicate new physics, such as dark matter decay (heating) or baryonic cooling beyond that expected from adiabatic expansion of the Universe. In the early Universe, most of the baryonic matter was in the form of neutral hydrogen (HI), detectable via its ground state's spin-flip transition. A measurement of the redshifted 21-cm spectrum maps the history of the HI gas through the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn and up to the Epoch of…
If dark energy and dark matter interact via exchange of energy and momentum, then this may affect the galaxy power spectrum on large scales. When this happens, it may be degenerate with the signal from primordial non-Gaussianity via scale-dependent bias. We consider a class of interacting dark energy models and show that the matter overdensity is scale-dependent on large scales. We estimate the effective non-Gaussianity arising from the large-scale effects of interaction in the dark sector. The signal of dark sector interaction can be disentangled from a primordial non-Gaussian signal by measu…
We revisit cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraints on primordial black hole dark matter. Spectral distortion limits from COBE/FIRAS do not impose a relevant constraint. Planck CMB anisotropy power spectra imply that primordial black holes with $m_{BH}\gtrsim 5~M_{\odot}$ are disfavored. However, this is susceptible to sizeable uncertainties due to the treatment of the black hole accretion process. These constraints are weaker than those quoted in earlier literature for the same observables.
The accumulation of dark matter particles near the primordial black holes starts at the radiation-dominated cosmological stage and produces the central density spikes. The spikes can be the bright gamma-ray sources due to dark matter annihilation. We present the self-consistent derivation of the equation of motion of particle in the metrics of primordial black hole immersed into cosmological background. By numerical solution of this equation we find the central dark matter density profile. The density growth is suppressed in the central part of the profile compared with previous calculations.
Baryonic matter can be accreted on to primordial back holes (PBHs) formed in the early Universe. The radiation from accreting PBHs is capable of altering the evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM), leaving marks on the global 21 cm signal in the dark ages. For accreting PBHs with mass $M_{\rm PBH}=10^{3}(10^{4})~M_{\odot}$ and mass fraction $f_{\rm PBH}=10^{-1}(10^{-3})$, the brightness temperature deviation $ΔδT_{b}$ reaches $\sim 18~(26)~\rm mK$ at redshift $z\sim 90$ ($ν\sim 16~\rm MHz$), and the gradient of the brightness temperature $dδT_{b}/dν$ reaches $ \sim 0.8~(0.5)~\rm mK~MHz^{-…
Cold dark matter as the sum of different mass Primordial Black Holes (PBH) can explain a number of unsolved astrophysical mysteries. Here I assume a broad PBH mass distribution providing the bulk of the dark matter, consistent with all constraints and estimate the baryon accretion onto PBH contributing to cosmic background radiations, mainly the correlation signal between the Cosmic X-ray and the Cosmic infrared background fluctuations in deep Chandra and Spitzer surveys. I assume Bondi capture and advection dominated disk accretion with reasonable baryon densities and effective relative veloc…
We explore the effects of elastic scattering between dark matter and baryons on the 21-cm signal during the dark ages. In particular, we consider a dark-matter---baryon interaction with a cross section of the form $σ= σ_0 v^{-4}$, in which case the effect of the drag force between the dark matter and baryon fluids grows with time. We show that, as opposed to what was previously thought, this effect heats up the baryons due to the relative velocity between dark matter and baryons. This creates an additional source of fluctuations, which can potentially make interactions easier to detect by 21-c…
We study the impact of primordial non-Gaussianity on the density profile of dark matter halos by using the semi-analytical model introduced recently by Dalal {\it et al.} which relates the peaks of the initial linear density field to the final density profile of dark matter halos. Models with primordial non-Gaussianity typically produce an initial density field that differs from that produced in Gaussian models. We use the path-integral formulation of excursion set theory to calculate the non-Gaussian corrections to the peak profile and derive the statistics of the peaks of non-Gaussian densit…
In this paper we revisit the issue of determining the oscillating primordial scalar power spectrum and oscillating equation of state of dark energy from the astronomical observations. By performing a global analysis with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, we find that the current observations from five-year WMAP and SDSS-LRG matter power spectrum, as well as the "union" supernovae sample, constrain the oscillating index of primordial spectrum and oscillating equation of state of dark energy with the amplitude less than $|n_{\rm amp}|<0.116$ and $|w_{\rm amp}|<0.232$ at 95% confidence level, …
The nature of dark matter (DM) is unknown. One compelling possibility is DM being composed of primordial black holes (PBHs), given the tight limits on some types of elementary particles as DM. There is only one remaining window of masses available for PBHs to constitute the entire DM density, $10^{17} - 10^{23} \mathrm{\; g}$. Here, we show that the kernel population in the cold Kuiper belt rules out this window, arguing in favor of a particle nature for DM.
The Cosmic Dark Ages represent the period in the early evolution of the Universe, starting immediately after the decoupling of CMB photons from matter, and ending with the formation of the first stars and galaxies. The HI signal from the neutral hydrogen atoms is the only mechanism for us to understand this crucial phase in the cosmological history of the Universe and answer fundamental questions about the validity of the standard cosmological model, dark matter physics, and inflation. Due to cosmological redshift, this signal is now only observable in the 3-30~MHz frequency band, which is blo…
21-cm radio signal has emerged as an important probe in investigating the dark age of the Universe (recombination to reionization). In the current analysis, we explore the combined effects of primordial black holes (PBH), cooling off of the baryonic matter due to dark matter (DM) - baryon collisions and interaction of dark matter - dark energy (DE) fluid on the 21-cm brightness temperature. The variation of brightness temperature shows remarkable dependence on DM mass ($m_χ$) and the dark matter - baryon scattering cross-section ($σ_0$). Bounds in $m_χ$ - $σ_0$ parameter space are obtained for…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) could provide the dark matter but a variety of constraints restrict the possible mass windows to $10^{16} - 10^{17}$g, $10^{20} - 10^{24}$g and $10 - 10^3M_{\odot}$. The last possibility is of special interest in view of the recent detection of black-hole mergers by LIGO. PBHs larger than $10^3 M_{\odot}$ might have important cosmological consequences even if they have only a small fraction of the dark matter density. In particular, they could generate cosmological structures either individually through the "seed" effect or collectively through the "Poisson" effec…
The possibility that primordial black hole binary mergers of stellar mass can explain the signals detected by the gravitational-wave interferometers has attracted much attention. In this scenario, primordial black holes can comprise only part of the entire dark matter, say, of order 0.1 %. This implies that most of the dark matter is accounted for by a different component, such as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. We point out that in this situation, very compact dark matter minihalos, composed of the dominant component of the dark matter, are likely to be formed abundantly in the early Un…
Many inflation theories predict that the primordial power spectrum is scale invariant. The amplitude of the power spectrum can be constrained by different observations such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB), Lyman-$α$, large-scale structures and primordial black holes (PBHs). Although the constraints from the CMB are robust, the corresponding scales are very large ($10^{-4}<k<1 \mathrm{Mpc^{-1}}$). For small scales ($k > 1 \mathrm{Mpc^{-1}}$), the research on the PBHs provides much weaker limits. Recently, ultracompact dark matter minihalos (UCMHs) was proposed and it was found that the…
We present an update on the SCI-HI experiment, which is designed to measure the all-sky (global) 21 cm brightness temperature during the end of the Dark Ages. Results from preliminary observations in June 2013 are discussed, along with system improvements and planned future work.
Observations of redshifted 21-cm signal from neutral hydrogen (HI) appear to be the most promising probe of the cosmic dark ages. The signal carries information about the thermal state along with density distribution of the intergalactic medium (IGM). The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), through its interaction with charged particles, plays a major role in determining the kinetic and spin temperature of HI gas in the IGM during dark ages. A Spatially fluctuating ionization fraction, which is caused by inhomogeneous recombinations, causes heat transfer from the CMBR to the IGM gas …
A concept for a new space-based cosmology mission called the Dark Ages Radio Explore (DARE) is presented in this paper. DARE's science objectives include (1) When did the first stars form? (2) When did the first accreting black holes form? (3) When did Reionization begin? (4) What surprises does the end of the Dark Ages hold (e.g., Dark Matter decay)? DARE will use the highly-redshifted hyperfine 21-cm transition from neutral hydrogen to track the formation of the first luminous objects by their impact on the intergalactic medium during the end of the Dark Ages and during Cosmic Dawn (redshift…
The observations and research on the neutrinos provide a kind of indirect way of revealing the properties of dark matter particles. For the detection of muon neutrinos, the main issue is the large atmospheric background, which is caused by the interactions between the cosmic rays and atoms within the atmosphere. Compared with muon neutrinos, tau neutrinos have a smaller atmospheric background especially for the downward-going direction. Except for the classical neutrino sources, dark matter particles can also annihilate into the neutrinos and are the potential high energy astrophysical sources…
A broad range of single field models of inflation are analyzed in light of all relevant recent cosmological data, checking whether they can lead to the formation of long--lived Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) as candidate for dark matter. To that end we calculate the spectral index of the power spectrum of primordial perturbations as well as its first and second derivatives. PBH formation is possible only if the spectral index $n_S(k_0)$ increases significantly at small scales. Since current data indicate that the first derivative $α_S$ of the spectral index is negative at the pivot scale, PBH f…

We analyse the thermal emission and resonant scattering of CMB radiation from the dark ages halos in the rotational lines of the helium hydride ion (HeH$^{+}$), one of the first chemical compounds in the Universe. Evaluating the optical depth, thermal and resonant brightness temperatures and spectral fluxes of dark ages halos is based on computing the cross-sections and rate coefficients of excitation/de-excitation of the lowest five rotational states of HeH$^{+}$ by inelastic collisions with atomic hydrogen. It was shown that in the Dark Ages the collisional excitation/de-excitation by atoms …
The early Universe is a precious probe of the birth of primordial objects, first star formation events and consequent production of photons and heavy elements. Higher-order corrections to the cosmological linear perturbation theory predicts the formation of coherent supersonic gaseous streaming motions at decoupling time. These bulk flows impact the gas cooling process and determine a cascade effect on the whole baryon evolution. By analytical estimates and N-body hydrodynamical chemistry numerical simulations including atomic and molecular evolution, gas cooling, star formation, feedback effe…
We study the fluctuations in the brightness temperature of 21-cm signal $δT_{21}$ at the dark ages ($z\sim100$) with a dark matter candidate in Inter Doublet Model (IDM). We then explore the effects of different fractions of IDM dark matter on $δT_{21}$ signal. The IDM dark matter masses are chosen in few tens of GeV region as well as in the high mass region beyond 500 GeV. It has been observed that the $δT_{21}$ signal is more sensitive in the dark matter mass range of $70 - 80$ GeV. A lower bound on annihilation cross-section for this dark matter is also obtained analyzing the $δT_{21}$ sign…
After recalling some puzzles in cosmology and briefly reviewing the Friedmann-Lemaître cosmos a simple unified model of the ``Dark Sector'' is described. This model involves a scalar field and a pseudo-scalar axion field that give rise to Dark Energy in the form of ``quintessence'' and to ``fuzzy'' Dark Matter, respectively. Predictions of the model concerning the late-time evolution of the Universe and possible implications for the problem of the observed Matter-Antimatter Asymmetry in the Universe are sketched.
We revisit constraints on small-scale primordial power from annihilation signals from dark matter minihalos. Using gamma rays and neutrinos from extragalactic minihalos and assuming the delta-function primordial spectrum, we show the dependence of the constraints on annihilation modes, the mass of dark matter, and the annihilation cross section. We report both conservative constraints by assuming minihalos are fully destructed when becoming part of halos originating from the standard almost-scale invariant primordial spectrum, and optimistic constraints by neglecting destruction.
Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves can be used to probe the small scale physics at very early time. For secondary gravitational waves produced after the horizon reentry, we derive an analytical formula for the time integral of the source and analytical behavior of the time dependence of the energy density of induced gravitational waves is obtained. By proposing a piecewise power law parametrization for the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations, we use the observational constraints on primordial black hole dark matter to obtain an upper bound on the power sp…
Primordial black holes in the mass range from $10^{-5}$ to $10^9$ g might have existed in the early universe. Via their evaporation mechanism (completed before Big Bang Nucleosynthesis), they might have released stable particles beyond the Standard Model. We reconsider the possibility that such particles might constitute the main part or a fraction of the dark matter observed today, updating the impact on this scenario from warm dark matter constraints. If sufficiently light, stable particles from primordial black holes evaporation might also provide a significant contribution to dark radiatio…
The idea of dark matter in the form of primordial black holes has seen a recent revival triggered by the LIGO detection of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers. In this context, it has been argued that a large initial clustering of primordial black holes can help alleviate the strong constraints on this scenario. In this work, we show that on the contrary, with large initial clustering the problem is exacerbated and constraints on primordial black hole dark matter become overwhelmingly strong.
Recently it has been pointed out that a cosmic background of relativistic axion-like particles (ALPs) would be produced by the primordial decays of heavy fields in the post-inflation epoch, contributing to the extra-radiation content in the Universe today. Primordial magnetic fields would trigger conversions of these ALPs into sub-MeV photons during the dark ages. This photon flux would produce an early reionization of the Universe, leaving a significant imprint on the total optical depth to recombination $τ$. Using the current measurement of $τ$ and the limit on the extra-radiation content $Δ…
Exact solutions of the perturbations equations in the magnetized LambdaCDM scenario are presented. They apply during the dark ages and, more specifically, after the baryons are freed from the drag of the photons. The magnetized growth rate of matter perturbations is compared with the growth index obtained in the concordance paradigm and under the assumption that dark energy does not cluster for a redshift window ranging from the epoch of reionization to the stage of dark-energy dominance. The constraints derived from this analysis are shown to be qualitatively complementary and quantitatively …
Dark matter annihilation or de-excitation, decay of metastable species, or other new physics may inject energetic electrons and photons into the photon-baryon fluid during and after recombination. As such particles cool, they partition their energy into a large number of efficiently ionizing electrons and photons, which in turn modify the ionization history. Recent work has provided a simple method for constraining arbitrary energy deposition histories using the cosmic microwave background (CMB); in this note, we present results describing the energy deposition histories for photons and electr…
We utilize Young's algorithm to model the adiabatic compression of the dark matter haloes of galaxies in the THINGS survey to determine the relationship between the halo fit to the rotation curve and the corresponding primordial halo prior to compression. Young's algorithm conserves radial action and angular momentum, resulting in less halo compression than more widely utilized approximations. We find that estimates of the parameters of the NFW haloes fit to the current dark matter distribution systematically overestimate the concentration and underestimate the virial velocity of the correspon…
