We present a study of X-ray normal galaxies using data from the first all-sky scan of the eROSITA X-ray survey. eRASS1 provides the first unbiased X-ray census of normal galaxies allowing us to study the X-ray emission from XRBs and the hot ISM in the full range of stellar population parameters present in the local Universe. By combining the HECATE value-added galaxy catalogue with the eRASS1, we study the X-ray emission from normal galaxies as a function of their SFR, M$_{*}$, Metallicity, and stellar population age. After applying optical and mid-IR activity classification criteria, we constructed a sample of 18790 star-forming galaxies with measurements of their L$_{X}$. By stacking the X-ray data in SFR-M$_{*}$-distance bins we study the correlation between the average L$_{X}$ and stellar population parameters. We also present updated L$_{\rm{X}}$-SFR and L$_{\rm{X}}$/SFR-Metallicity scaling relations accounting for the scatter dependence on the SFR. We find that the integrated L$_{X}$ of the HEC-eR1 star-forming galaxies is significantly elevated with respect to that expected from the current scaling relations. The observed scatter is also significantly larger. This excess persists even when we measure the average L$_{X}$ of galaxies in SFR-M$_{*}$-distance and metallicity bins and it is stronger in lower SFRs. The excess is not the result of hot gas, LMXBs, background AGN, LLAGN (including TDEs), or stochastic sampling of the XRB XLF. We find that while the excess correlates with lower metallicity, its primary driver is the age of the stellar populations. Our analysis reveals a sub-population of X-ray luminous starbursts with high sSFRs, low metallicities, and young stellar populations. This population drives upwards the X-ray scaling relations for star-forming galaxies, and has important implications for understanding the population of XRBs in the local and high-z Universe.
In this study, we investigate the X-ray properties of WISE J090924.01+000211.1 (WISEJ0909+0002), an extremely luminous infrared (IR) galaxy (ELIRG) at $z_{\rm spec}$= 1.871 in the eROSITA final equatorial depth survey (eFEDS). WISEJ0909+0002 is a WISE 22 $μ$m source, located in the GAMA-09 field, detected by eROSITA during the performance and verification phase. The corresponding optical spectrum indicates that this object is a type-1 active galactic nucleus (AGN). Observations from eROSITA combined with Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data indicate a very luminous ($L$ (2--10 keV) = ($2.1 \pm…

We searched for high-z quasars within the X-ray source population detected in the contiguous $\sim 140^2$ eFEDS field observed by eROSITA during the performance verification phase. We collected the available spectroscopic information in the field, including the sample of all currently known optically selected z>5.5 quasars and cross-matched secure Legacy DR8 counterparts of eROSITA-detected X-ray point-like sources with this spectroscopic sample. We report the X-ray detection of an eROSITA source securely matched to the well-known quasar SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 (z=5.81). The soft X-ray flux o…
In order to better understand the nature of post-starburst quasars (PSQs) in the context of galaxy evolution, we compare their properties to those of post-starburst galaxies and quasars from appropriately selected samples possessing similar redshift ($z \sim 0.3$), luminosity ($M_r \sim -$23), and data quality. We consider morphologies, spectral features, and derived physical properties of the stellar populations and central supermassive black hole. PSQs themselves come in two types: the more luminous AGNs with more luminous post-starburst stellar populations hosted by elliptical galaxies, som…
SRGE J170245.3+130104 was discovered by the eROSITA telescope aboard the SRG space observatory on March 13-15, 2020 during the first half-year scan of its all-sky X-ray survey. The optical counterpart of the X-ray source was photometrically identified as a distant quasar candidate at $z\approx5.5$. Follow-up spectroscopic observations, done in August/September 2020 with the SCORPIO-II instrument at the BTA 6-m telescope, confirmed that SRGE J170245.3+130104 is a distant quasar at redshift z=5.466. The X-ray luminosity of the quasar during the first half-year scan of the eROSITA all-sky survey …

Theoretical models of galaxy-AGN co-evolution ascribe an important role for the feedback process to a short, luminous, obscured, and dust-enshrouded phase during which the accretion rate of the SMBH is expected to be at its maximum and the associated AGN-driven winds are also predicted to be maximally developed. To test this scenario, we have isolated a text-book candidate from the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) obtained within the Performance and Verification program of the eROSITA telescope on board Spectrum Roentgen Gamma. From an initial catalog of 246 hard X-ray selected so…
We study stellar and black hole mass assembly in a sample of 42 infrared-luminous galaxy mergers at z<0.3 by combining results from radiative transfer modelling with archival measures of molecular gas and black hole mass. The ratios of stellar mass, molecular gas mass, and black hole mass to each other are consistent with those of massive gas-rich galaxies at z<0.3. The advanced mergers may show increased black hole mass to stellar mass ratios, consistent with the transition from AGN to ellipticals and implying substantial black hole mass growth over the course of the merger. Star formation ra…
The $\it{eROSITA}$ Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), completed during the calibration and performance verification phase of the $\it{eROSITA}$ instrument on $\it{Spectrum\, Roentgen\, Gamma}$, delivers data at and beyond the final depth of the four-year $\it{eROSITA}$ all-sky survey (eRASS:8), $f_{0.5-2\,\text{ keV}}$ = $1.1\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{2}$, over 140 deg$^{2}$. It provides the first view of normal galaxy X-ray emission from X-ray binaries (XRBs) and the hot interstellar medium at the full depth of eRASS:8. We use the Heraklion Extragalactic Catalogue (HECATE) of galax…

We present a CO(3-2) study of four systems composed of six (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs), located at 0.28 < z < 0.44, that straddle the transition region between regular star forming galaxies and starbursts. These galaxies benefit from previous multi-wavelength analysis allowing in depth exploration of an understudied population of U/LIRGs at a time when the universe is experiencing a rapid decline in star formation rate density. We detect CO(3-2) emission in four targets and these galaxies fall between the loci of regular star forming galaxies and starbursts on the Kennicutt-Sc…
We report the discovery of BOSS-EUVLG1 at z=2.469, by far the most luminous, almost un-obscured star-forming galaxy known at any redshift. First classified as a QSO within the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, follow-up observations with the Gran Telescopio Canarias reveal that its large luminosity, MUV = -24.40 and log(L_Lya/erg s-1) = 44.0, is due to an intense burst of star-formation, and not to an AGN or gravitational lensing. BOSS-EUVLG1 is a compact (reff = 1.2 kpc), young (4-5 Myr) starburst with a stellar mass log(M*/Msun) = 10.0 +/- 0.1 and a prodigious star formation rate of ~…
This paper introduces the Multi-wavelength Extreme Starburst Sample (MESS), a new catalog of 138 star-forming galaxies (0.1 < z < 0.3) optically selected from the SDSS using emission line strength diagnostics to have high absolute SFR (minimum 11 solar masses per year, with median SFR approx 61 solar masses per year based on a Kroupa IMF). The MESS was designed to complement samples of nearby star-forming galaxies such as the luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), and ultraviolet luminous galaxies (UVLGs). Observations using the multiband imaging photometer (MIPS; 24, 70, and 160μm channels) on t…
We describe radio observations at 244 and 610 MHz of a sample of 20 luminous and ultra-luminous IRAS galaxies. These are a sub-set of a sample of 31 objects that have well-measured radio spectra up to at least 23 GHz. The radio spectra of these objects below 1.4 GHz show a great variety of forms and are rarely a simple power-law extrapolation of the synchrotron spectra at higher frequencies. Most objects of this class have spectral turn-overs or bends in their radio spectra. We interpret these spectra in terms of free-free absorption in the starburst environment. Several objects show radio spe…
While the formation of stellar clumps in distant galaxies is usually attributed to gravitational violent disk instabilities, we show here that major mergers also represent a competitive mechanism to form bright clumps. Using ~0.1'' resolution ACS F814W images in the entire COSMOS field, we measure the fraction of clumpy emission in 109 main sequence (MS) and 79 Herschel-detected starbursts (off-MS) galaxies at 0.5 < z < 0.9, representative of normal versus merger induced star-forming activity, respectively. We additionally identify merger samples from visual inspection and from Gini-M20 morpho…

We present fluxes in both neutral carbon [CI] lines at the centers of 76 galaxies with FIR luminosities between 10^{9} and 10^{12} L(o) obtained with Herschel-SPIRE and with ground-based facilities, along with the J=7-6, J=4-3, J=2-1 12CO and J=2-1 13CO line fluxes. We investigate whether these lines can be used to characterize the molecular ISM of the parent galaxies in simple ways and how the molecular gas properties define the model results. In most starburst galaxies, the [CI]/13CO flux ratio is much higher than in Galactic star-forming regions, and it is correlated to the total FIR lumino…
We conducted a Spitzer Space Telescope survey of 28 Luminous (11 < log(LIR/L_odot) < 12, LIRGs) and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (log(LIR/L_odot) > 12, ULIRGs). Many of these galaxies are found in pairs or associations and are powered by either nuclear activity or starformation (Sanders & Mirabel 1996). Our main goal is to understand the relative importance of starbursts and AGNs in interacting systems. Is the frequency of AGN and starbursts in these interacting galaxies related to their luminosities? What is the importance of the merger stage and the frequency of AGNs? We present our conc…
We searched for X-ray supernova remnants (SNRs) in the starburst region of M82, using archival data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory with a total effective exposure time of 620 ks with an X-ray spectroscopic selection. Strong line-emission from Fe xxv at 6.7 keV is a characteristic spectral feature of hot, shocked gas of young SNRs and distinctive among the discrete sources in the region populated by X-ray binaries. We selected candidates using narrow-band imaging aimed at the line excess and identified six (and possibly a seventh) X-ray SNRs. Two previously known examples were recovered by …
We report new observations toward the hyper-luminous dusty starbursting major merger ADFS-27 (z=5.655), using ATCA and ALMA. We detect CO 2-1, 8-7, 9-8, 10-9 and H2O(321-221) emission, and a P-Cygni-shaped OH+(11-01) absorption/emission feature. We also tentatively detect H2O(321-312) and OH+(12-01) emission and CH+(1-0) absorption. We find a total cold molecular mass of M_gas = (2.1+/-0.2) x 10^11 (alpha_CO/1.0) Msun. We also find that the excitation of the star-forming gas is overall moderate for a z>5 dusty starburst, which is consistent with its moderate dust temperature. A high density, h…
Using an AKARI multi-wavelength mid-infrared (IR) survey, we identify luminous starburst galaxies at z> 0.5 based on the PAH luminosity, and investigate the nature of these PAH-selected starbursts. An extragalactic survey with AKARI towards the north ecliptic pole (NEP), the NEP-Deep survey, is unique in terms of a comprehensive wavelength coverage from 2 to 24um using all 9 photometric bands of the InfraRed Camera (IRC). This survey allows us to photometrically identify galaxies whose mid-IR emission is clearly dominated by PAHs. We propose a single colour selection method to identify such ga…
We present the results of our ALMA Cycle 0 observations, using HCN/HCO+/HNC J=4-3 lines, of six nearby luminous infrared galaxies with various energetic contributions from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) estimated from previous infrared spectroscopy. These lines are very effective for probing the physical properties of high-density molecular gas around the hidden energy sources in the nuclear regions of these galaxies. We find that HCN to HCO+ J=4-3 flux ratios tend to be higher in AGN-important galaxies than in starburst-dominated regions, as was seen at the J=1-0 transition, while there is no …
We report the results of interferometric HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) observations of four luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), NGC 2623, Mrk 266, Arp 193, and NGC 1377, as a final sample of our systematic survey using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. Our survey contains the most systematic interferometric, spatially-resolved, simultaneous HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) observations of LIRGs. Ground-based infrared spectra of these LIRGs are also presented to elucidate the nature of the energy sources at the nuclei. We derive the HCN(1-0)/HCO+(1-0) brightness-temperature ratios of these LIRGs and confirm the pr…
We present high-resolution (1".0) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO (1-0) and CO (2- 1) rotational transitions toward the nearby IR-luminous merger NGC 1614 supplemented with ALMA archival data of CO (3-2), and CO (6-5) transitions. The CO (6-5) emission arises from the starburst ring (central 590 pc in radius), while the lower-$J$ CO lines are distributed over the outer disk ($\sim$ 3.3 kpc in radius). Radiative transfer and photon dominated region (PDR) modeling reveal that the starburst ring has a single warmer gas component with more intense far-ultravi…
We present high-spatial-resolution ($\sim 0.12''$ or $\approx 800 \, {\rm pc}$ at $z = 4.5$) ALMA $870\,μ$m dust continuum observations of a sample of 44 ultrared dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected from the H-ATLAS and HerMES far-infrared surveys because of their red colors from 250 to 500 $μ$m: $S_{500} / S_{250} > 1.5$ and $S_{500} / S_{350} > 1.0$. With photometric redshifts in the range $z \sim 4$-6, our sample includes the most luminous starbursting systems in the early Universe known so far, with total obscured star-formation rates (SFRs) of up to $\sim 4,500 \, M_\odot \, {\rm…
Based on optical/near-IR Magellan FIRE spectra of 25 starburst galaxies at 0.5 < z < 0.9, Calabrò et al.(2018) showed that their attenuation properties can be explained by a single-parameter sequence of total obscurations ranging from A(V)=2 to A(V)=30 towards the starburst core centers in a mixed stars and dust configuration. We investigate here the origin of this sequence for the same sample. We show that total attenuations anti-correlate with the starburst sizes in radio (3 GHz) with a significance larger than 5sigma and a scatter of 0.26 dex. More obscured and compact starbursts also show …
Nuclear starbursts and AGN activity are the main heating processes in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) and their relationship is fundamental to understand galaxy evolution. In this paper, we study the star-formation and AGN activity of a sample of 11 local LIRGs imaged with subarcsecond angular resolution at radio (8.4GHz) and near-infrared ($2.2μ$m) wavelengths. This allows us to characterize the central kpc of these galaxies with a spatial resolution of $\simeq100$pc. In general, we find a good spatial correlation between the radio and the near-IR emission, although radio emission tends to…
Deep narrow-band surveys have revealed a large population of faint Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters (LAEs) in the distant Universe, but relatively little is known about the most luminous sources ($L_{Lyα}>10^{42.7}$ erg/s; $L_{Lyα}>L^*_{Lyα}$). Here we present the spectroscopic follow-up of 21 luminous LAEs at z~2-3 found with panoramic narrow-band surveys over five independent extragalactic fields (~4x10$^6$ Mpc$^{3}$ surveyed at z~2.2 and z~3.1). We use WHT/ISIS, Keck/DEIMOS and VLT/X-SHOOTER to study these sources using high ionisation UV lines. Luminous LAEs at z~2-3 have blue UV slopes ($β=-2.0…
We report the detection of ADFS-27, a dusty, starbursting major merger at a redshift of z=5.655, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). ADFS-27 was selected from Herschel/SPIRE and APEX/LABOCA data as an extremely red "870 micron riser" (i.e., S_250<S_350<S_500<S_870), demonstrating the utility of this technique to identify some of the highest-redshift dusty galaxies. A scan of the 3mm atmospheric window with ALMA yields detections of CO(5-4) and CO(6-5) emission, and a tentative detection of H2O(211-202) emission, which provides an unambiguous redshift measurement. The…

We present far-IR photometry and infrared spectrum of the z=3.9114 quasar/starburst composite system APM 08279+5255 obtained using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)/HAWC+ and the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). We decompose the IR-to-radio spectral energy distribution (SED), sampled in 51 bands, using (i) a model comprised of two-temperature modified blackbodies (MBB) and radio power-laws and (ii) a semi-analytic model, which also accounts for emission from a clumpy torus. The latter is more realistic but requires a well-sampled SED, as possible …
We present images of 29 post-starburst quasars (PSQs) from a Hubble Space Telescope (\emph{HST}) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel Snapshot program. These broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGN) possess the spectral signatures of massive ($M_{burst} \sim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$), moderate-aged stellar populations (hundreds of Myrs). Thus, their composite nature provides insight into the AGN-starburst connection. We measure quasar-to-host galaxy light contributions via semi-automated two-dimensional light profile fits of PSF-subtracted images. We examine the host morphologies, as…
Hinge clumps are luminous knots of star formation near the base of tidal features in some interacting galaxies. We use archival Hubble Space Telescope UV/optical/IR images and Chandra X-ray maps along with GALEX UV, Spitzer IR, and ground-based optical/near-IR images to investigate the star forming properties in a sample of 12 hinge clumps in five interacting galaxies. The most extreme of these hinge clumps have star formation rates of 1 - 9 M(sun)/yr, comparable to or larger than the `overlap' region of intense star formation between the two disks of the colliding galaxy system the Antennae. …
We present ALMA observations of cold dust and molecular gas in four high-luminosity, heavily reddened (A$_{\rm{V}} \sim 2.5-6$ mag) Type 1 quasars at $z\sim2.5$ with virial M$_{\rm{BH}} \sim 10^{10}$M$_\odot$, to test whether dusty, massive quasars represent the evolutionary link between submillimetre bright galaxies (SMGs) and unobscured quasars. All four quasars are detected in both the dust continuum and in the $^{12}$CO(3-2) line. The mean dust mass is 6$\times$10$^{8}$M$_\odot$ assuming a typical high redshift quasar spectral energy distribution (T=41K, $β$=1.95 or T=47K, $β$=1.6). The im…
We discuss the restframe UV emission from the starbursting galaxy HFLS3 at z=6.34, discovered in Herschel/SPIRE data due to its red color in the submm wavelengths from 250-500 um. The apparent inst. SFR of HFLS3 inferred from the total FIR luminosity measured with over 15 photometric data points between 100 to 1000 um is 2900 Msun/yr. Keck/NIRC2 Ks band adaptive optics imaging data showed two potential NIR counterparts near HFLS3. Previously, the northern galaxy was taken to be in the foreground at z=2.1 while the southern galaxy was assumed to HFLS3's NIR counterpart. New HST/WFC3 and ACS ima…
We report the identification of an extreme proto-cluster of galaxies in the early Universe whose core (nicknamed Distant Red Core, DRC) is formed by at least ten dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs), confirmed to lie at $z_{\rm spec} = 4.002$ via detection of [CI](1-0), $^{12}$CO(6-5), $^{12}$CO(4-3), $^{12}$CO(2-1) and ${\rm H_2O} (2_{11} - 2_{02})$ emission lines, detected using ALMA and ATCA. The spectroscopically-confirmed components of the proto-cluster are distributed over a ${\rm 260\, kpc \times 310\, kpc}$ region and have a collective obscured star-formation rate (SFR) of $\sim 6500 \,…
The nearby ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp 220 is an excellent laboratory for studies of extreme astrophysical environments. For 20 years, Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) has been used to monitor a population of compact sources thought to be supernovae (SNe), supernova remnants (SNRs) and possibly active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Using new and archival VLBI data spanning 20 years, we obtain 23 high-resolution radio images of Arp 220 at wavelengths from 18 cm to 2 cm. From model-fitting to the images we obtain estimates of flux densities and sizes of all detected sources. We d…
We measure the dust and gas content of the three sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the GN20 proto-cluster at $z=4.05$ using new IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer (PdBI) CO(4-3) and 1.2-3.3 mm continuum observations. All these three SMGs are heavily dust obscured, with UV-based star formation rate (SFR) estimates significantly smaller than the ones derived from the bolometric infrared (IR), consistent with the spatial offsets revealed by HST and CO imaging. Based also on evaluations of the specific SFR, CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and gas depletion timescale, we classify all the three galax…
In this work we present a search for molecular line emission in the interacting luminous infrared galaxy Arp 157 (NGC 520). We report the detection of 19 different lines, from 12 different molecular species in our 3mm line survey and supporting 2mm and 1mm observations. We investigated the profiles of the detected lines, and find all species show asymmetric emission lines, with profiles that differ systematically as a function of critical density. We derive the physical conditions within the gas reservoir of this system using isotope ratios, an excitation analysis, and rotation diagrams. We su…
Understanding how super-massive black holes form and grow in the early Universe has become a major challenge since the discovery of luminous quasars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. Simulations indicate an evolutionary sequence of dust-reddened quasars emerging from heavily dust-obscured starbursts that then transition to unobscured luminous quasars by expelling gas and dust. Although the last phase has been identified out to a redshift of 7.6, a transitioning quasar has not been found at similar redshifts owing to their faintness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Here we rep…
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7130, a known starburst-AGN composite galaxy. We employ standard emission line ratio diagnostics and maps of velocity dispersion and velocity field to investigate how the dominant ionising sources change as a function of radius. From the signatures of both star formation and AGN activity we show that NGC 7130 is a remarkably clean case of starburst-AGN mixing. We find a smooth transition from AGN dominated emission in the centre to pure star forming activity further out, from which we can estimate the r…
