Extractive summaries are usually presented as lists of sentences with no expected cohesion between them. In this paper, we aim to enforce cohesion whilst controlling for informativeness and redundancy in summaries, in cases where the input exhibits high redundancy. The pipeline controls for redundancy in long inputs as it is consumed, and balances informativeness and cohesion during sentence selection. Our sentence selector simulates human memory to keep track of topics --modeled as lexical chains--, enforcing cohesive ties between noun phrases. Across a variety of domains, our experiments revealed that it is possible to extract highly cohesive summaries that nevertheless read as informative to humans as summaries extracted by only accounting for informativeness or redundancy. The extracted summaries exhibit smooth topic transitions between sentences as signaled by lexical chains, with chains spanning adjacent or near-adjacent sentences.
This paper provides results of evaluating some text summarisation techniques for the purpose of producing call summaries for contact centre solutions. We specifically focus on extractive summarisation methods, as they do not require any labelled data and are fairly quick and easy to implement for production use. We experimentally compare several such methods by using them to produce summaries of calls, and evaluating these summaries objectively (using ROUGE-L) and subjectively (by aggregating the judgements of several annotators). We found that TopicSum and Lead-N outperform the other summaris…

Sentence summarization shortens given texts while maintaining core contents of the texts. Unsupervised approaches have been studied to summarize texts without human-written summaries. However, recent unsupervised models are extractive, which remove words from texts and thus they are less flexible than abstractive summarization. In this work, we devise an abstractive model based on reinforcement learning without ground-truth summaries. We formulate the unsupervised summarization based on the Markov decision process with rewards representing the summary quality. To further enhance the summary qu…
Extractive models usually formulate text summarization as extracting fixed top-$k$ salient sentences from the document as a summary. Few works exploited extracting finer-grained Elementary Discourse Unit (EDU) with little analysis and justification for the extractive unit selection. Further, the selection strategy of the fixed top-$k$ salient sentences fits the summarization need poorly, as the number of salient sentences in different documents varies and therefore a common or best $k$ does not exist in reality. To fill these gaps, this paper first conducts the comparison analysis of oracle su…
Summarizing legal decisions requires the expertise of law practitioners, which is both time- and cost-intensive. This paper presents techniques for extractive summarization of legal decisions in a low-resource setting using limited expert annotated data. We test a set of models that locate relevant content using a sequential model and tackle redundancy by leveraging maximal marginal relevance to compose summaries. We also demonstrate an implicit approach to help train our proposed models generate more informative summaries. Our multi-task learning model variant leverages rhetorical role identi…
Opinion summarization is the task of automatically generating summaries that encapsulate information from multiple user reviews. We present Semantic Autoencoder (SemAE) to perform extractive opinion summarization in an unsupervised manner. SemAE uses dictionary learning to implicitly capture semantic information from the review and learns a latent representation of each sentence over semantic units. A semantic unit is supposed to capture an abstract semantic concept. Our extractive summarization algorithm leverages the representations to identify representative opinions among hundreds of revie…
The difficulty of generating coherent long texts lies in the fact that existing models overwhelmingly focus on predicting local words, and cannot make high level plans on what to generate or capture the high-level discourse dependencies between chunks of texts. Inspired by human writing processes, where a list of bullet points or a catalog is first outlined, and then each bullet point is expanded to form the whole article, we propose {\it SOE}, a pipelined system that involves of summarizing, outlining and elaborating for long text generation: the model first outlines the summaries for differe…

Extractive summarization suffers from irrelevance, redundancy and incoherence. Existing work shows that abstractive rewriting for extractive summaries can improve the conciseness and readability. These rewriting systems consider extracted summaries as the only input, which is relatively focused but can lose important background knowledge. In this paper, we investigate contextualized rewriting, which ingests the entire original document. We formalize contextualized rewriting as a seq2seq problem with group alignments, introducing group tag as a solution to model the alignments, identifying extr…

We present the Quantized Transformer (QT), an unsupervised system for extractive opinion summarization. QT is inspired by Vector-Quantized Variational Autoencoders, which we repurpose for popularity-driven summarization. It uses a clustering interpretation of the quantized space and a novel extraction algorithm to discover popular opinions among hundreds of reviews, a significant step towards opinion summarization of practical scope. In addition, QT enables controllable summarization without further training, by utilizing properties of the quantized space to extract aspect-specific summaries. …

In this research work, we present a method to generate summaries of long scientific documents that uses the advantages of both extractive and abstractive approaches. Before producing a summary in an abstractive manner, we perform the extractive step, which then is used for conditioning the abstractor module. We used pre-trained transformer-based language models, for both extractor and abstractor. Our experiments showed that using extractive and abstractive models jointly significantly improves summarization results and ROUGE scores.

Much progress has been made in text summarization, fueled by neural architectures using large-scale training corpora. However, in the news domain, neural models easily overfit by leveraging position-related features due to the prevalence of the inverted pyramid writing style. In addition, there is an unmet need to generate a variety of summaries for different users. In this paper, we propose a neural framework that can flexibly control summary generation by introducing a set of sub-aspect functions (i.e. importance, diversity, position). These sub-aspect functions are regulated by a set of con…

Text summarization is the process of extracting the most important information from the text and presenting it concisely in fewer sentences. Call transcript is a text that involves textual description of a phone conversation between a customer (caller) and agent(s) (customer representatives). This paper presents an indigenously developed method that combines topic modeling and sentence selection with punctuation restoration in condensing ill-punctuated or un-punctuated call transcripts to produce summaries that are more readable. Extensive testing, evaluation and comparisons have demonstrated …

Most current extractive summarization models generate summaries by selecting salient sentences. However, one of the problems with sentence-level extractive summarization is that there exists a gap between the human-written gold summary and the oracle sentence labels. In this paper, we propose to extract fact-level semantic units for better extractive summarization. We also introduce a hierarchical structure, which incorporates the multi-level of granularities of the textual information into the model. In addition, we incorporate our model with BERT using a hierarchical graph mask. This allows …

We present a new summarization task, generating summaries of novel chapters using summary/chapter pairs from online study guides. This is a harder task than the news summarization task, given the chapter length as well as the extreme paraphrasing and generalization found in the summaries. We focus on extractive summarization, which requires the creation of a gold-standard set of extractive summaries. We present a new metric for aligning reference summary sentences with chapter sentences to create gold extracts and also experiment with different alignment methods. Our experiments demonstrate si…

Automated summarization of clinical texts can reduce the burden of medical professionals. "Discharge summaries" are one promising application of the summarization, because they can be generated from daily inpatient records. Our preliminary experiment suggests that 20-31% of the descriptions in discharge summaries overlap with the content of the inpatient records. However, it remains unclear how the summaries should be generated from the unstructured source. To decompose the physician's summarization process, this study aimed to identify the optimal granularity in summarization. We first define…
Most prior work in the sequence-to-sequence paradigm focused on datasets with input sequence lengths in the hundreds of tokens due to the computational constraints of common RNN and Transformer architectures. In this paper, we study long-form abstractive text summarization, a sequence-to-sequence setting with input sequence lengths up to 100,000 tokens and output sequence lengths up to 768 tokens. We propose SEAL, a Transformer-based model, featuring a new encoder-decoder attention that dynamically extracts/selects input snippets to sparsely attend to for each output segment. Using only the or…

Extracting summaries from long documents can be regarded as sentence classification using the structural information of the documents. How to use such structural information to summarize a document is challenging. In this paper, we propose GoSum, a novel graph and reinforcement learning based extractive model for long-paper summarization. In particular, GoSum encodes sentence states in reinforcement learning by building a heterogeneous graph for each input document at different discourse levels. An edge in the graph reflects the discourse hierarchy of a document for restraining the semantic dr…

Unsupervised extractive document summarization aims to select important sentences from a document without using labeled summaries during training. Existing methods are mostly graph-based with sentences as nodes and edge weights measured by sentence similarities. In this work, we find that transformer attentions can be used to rank sentences for unsupervised extractive summarization. Specifically, we first pre-train a hierarchical transformer model using unlabeled documents only. Then we propose a method to rank sentences using sentence-level self-attentions and pre-training objectives. Experim…

Opinion summarization is the task of automatically generating summaries for a set of reviews about a specific target (e.g., a movie or a product). Since the number of reviews for each target can be prohibitively large, neural network-based methods follow a two-stage approach where an extractive step first pre-selects a subset of salient opinions and an abstractive step creates the summary while conditioning on the extracted subset. However, the extractive model leads to loss of information which may be useful depending on user needs. In this paper we propose a summarization framework that elim…

We introduce MemSum (Multi-step Episodic Markov decision process extractive SUMmarizer), a reinforcement-learning-based extractive summarizer enriched at each step with information on the current extraction history. When MemSum iteratively selects sentences into the summary, it considers a broad information set that would intuitively also be used by humans in this task: 1) the text content of the sentence, 2) the global text context of the rest of the document, and 3) the extraction history consisting of the set of sentences that have already been extracted. With a lightweight architecture, Me…
We address the problem of unsupervised extractive document summarization, especially for long documents. We model the unsupervised problem as a sparse auto-regression one and approximate the resulting combinatorial problem via a convex, norm-constrained problem. We solve it using a dedicated Frank-Wolfe algorithm. To generate a summary with $k$ sentences, the algorithm only needs to execute $\approx k$ iterations, making it very efficient. We explain how to avoid explicit calculation of the full gradient and how to include sentence embedding information. We evaluate our approach against two ot…
The summarization literature focuses on the summarization of news articles. The news articles in the CNN-DailyMail are relatively short documents with about 30 sentences per document on average. We introduce SciBERTSUM, our summarization framework designed for the summarization of long documents like scientific papers with more than 500 sentences. SciBERTSUM extends BERTSUM to long documents by 1) adding a section embedding layer to include section information in the sentence vector and 2) applying a sparse attention mechanism where each sentences will attend locally to nearby sentences and on…

The rewriting method for text summarization combines extractive and abstractive approaches, improving the conciseness and readability of extractive summaries using an abstractive model. Exiting rewriting systems take each extractive sentence as the only input, which is relatively focused but can lose necessary background knowledge and discourse context. In this paper, we investigate contextualized rewriting, which consumes the entire document and considers the summary context. We formalize contextualized rewriting as a seq2seq with group-tag alignments, introducing group-tag as a solution to m…
