The magnitudes of the couplings of the scalar resonance at 125 GeV with the SM particles are found to be consistent with those of the SM Higgs boson. However, the signs are not experimentally determined in most of the cases, a prime example being that with the $Z$-boson pair. In other words, $κ_Z^h$, the ratio of the couplings of the actual 125 GeV resonance with $ZZ$ and that of the SM Higgs boson with the same, is consistent with both $+1$ and $-1$, the latter being the `wrong-sign'. We argue that the wrong-sign $hZZ$ coupling will necessitate the intervention of new physics below $\mathcal{O}\left(620\right)$ GeV to safeguard the underlying theory from unitarity violation. The strength of the new nonstandard couplings can be derived from the unitarity sum rules, which are comparable to the SM-Higgs couplings in magnitude. Thus the strong limits from the direct searches at the LHC can help us rule out the existence of such nonstandard particles with unusually large couplings thereby disfavoring the possibility of a wrong-sign $hZZ$ coupling.
We study the sensitivity of constraining the model independent Higgs-Z-Z coupling under effective theory up to dimension-6 operators at the future Higgs factory. Utilizing the current conceptual design parameters of the Circular Electron Positron Collider, we give the experimental limits for the model independent operators by the total Higgsstrahlung cross section and angular distribution of Z boson decay in the Higgs factory. Especially, we give very small sensitivity limit for the CP violation parameter $\tilde g$, which will be a clear window to test the Standard Model and look for New Phys…
Being one of the golden channels for precise measurement of Higgs properties, the process $gg \to H\to ZZ \rightarrow 4l$ provides an opportunity to detect the anomalous $HZZ$ couplings in searching of new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we adopt the method of spinor helicity amplitudes to calculate the amplitudes of process $gg \to H \to ZZ \rightarrow 2e2μ$ at the LHC in the frame of the effective dimension-6 operators. Signal processes of CP-even and CP-odd anomalous $HVV$ couplings in Higgs on/off-shell region and their interference are simulated by using the package MCFM…
For a generic Higgs boson, measuring the relative sign and magnitude of its couplings with the $W$ and $Z$ bosons is essential in determining its origin. Such a test is also indispensable for the 125-GeV Higgs boson. We propose that the ratio of the $HWW$ and $HZZ$ couplings $λ_{WZ}$ can be directly determined through the $W^+W^-H$ production, where $H$ denotes a generic Higgs boson, owing to the tree-level interference effect. While this is impractical at the LHC due to the limited sensitivity, it can be done at future $e^+e^-$ colliders, such as a 500-GeV ILC with the beam polarization $P(e^…
The electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism is still an undecided question in particle physics. We propose to utilize the single top quark and Higgs associated production ($th$), $Zh$ production via gluon fusion at the LHC to probe the couplings between the Higgs and the gauge bosons and further to test the EWSB. We demonstrate that the $th$ and $gg\to Zh$ productions are sensitive to the relative sign of couplings ($ht\bar{t}$, $hWW$) and ($ht\bar{t}$, $hZZ$), respectively. We find that the relative sign between $hWW$ and $hZZ$ couplings could be fully determined after combining the pr…
Though the 125 GeV Higgs boson is consistent with the standard model (SM) prediction until now, the triple Higgs coupling can deviate from the SM value in the physics beyond the SM (BSM). In this paper, the radiative correction to the triple Higgs coupling is investigated in the minimal extension of the SM by adding a real gauge singlet scalar. In this model there are two scalars $h$ and $H$, and both of them are mixing states of the doublet and singlet. Provided that the mixing angle is set to be zero, namely the SM limit, $h$ is the pure left-over of the doublet and its behaviour is the same…
We consider the production of two Higgs bosons in association with a gauge boson or another Higgs boson at the hadron colliders. We compute the cross sections and distributions for the processes $ p p \to H H H $ and $H H Z$ within the standard model. In particular, we compute the gluon-gluon fusion one-loop contributions mediated via heavy quarks in the loop. It is the leading order contribution to $ p p \to H H H $ process. To the process $ p p \to H H Z $, it is next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) contribution in QCD coupling. We also compare this contribution to the next-to-leading-order …
We examine how accurately the general HZV couplings, with V=Z,gamma, may be determined by studying e^+e^- --> Hff-bar processes at future e^+e^- linear colliders. By using the optimal-observable method, which makes use of all available experimental information, we find out which combinations of the various HZV coupling terms may be constrained most efficiently with high luminosity. We also assess the benefits of measuring the tau-lepton helicities, identifying the bottom-hadron charges, polarizing the electron beam and running at two different collider energies. The HZZ couplings are generally…
Electroweak precision measurements established that custodial symmetry is preserved to a good accuracy in the gauge sector after electroweak symmetry breaking. However, recent LHC results might be interpreted as pointing towards Higgs couplings that do not respect such symmetry. Motivated by this possibility, we reconsider the presence of an explicitly custodial breaking coupling in a generic Higgs parameterization. After briefly commenting on the large UV sensitivity of the T parameter to such a coupling, we perform a fit to results of Higgs searches at LHC and Tevatron, and find that the app…
We examine the effect of a general HZZ coupling through a study of the Higgs decay to leptons via Z bosons at the LHC. We discuss various methods for placing limits on additional couplings, including measurement of the partial width, threshold scans, and asymmetries constructed from angular observables. We find that only the asymmetries provide a definitive test of additional couplings. We further estimate the significances they provide.
A light CP-even Higgs boson (h) with a mass of about 10 GeV could explain the recent BNL measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, in the framework of a general CP-conserving two-Higgs-doublet extension of the Standard Model with no tree-level flavor-changing neutral Higgs couplings. However, the allowed Higgs mass window is quite small and the corresponding model parameters are very constrained. The Higgs sector can contribute significantly to the observed BNL result for g-2 without violating known experimental constraints only if the hZZ coupling (approximately) vanishes and m_h lie…
We study the couplings of a CP-even neutral Higgs boson h in a model containing one scalar SU(2)_L doublet, one real triplet, and one complex triplet with hypercharge 1. Because the two triplets contribute to the rho parameter with opposite signs, the triplet vacuum expectation values can be sizable. We show that (i) the hWW and hZZ couplings can be larger than the corresponding values in the Standard Model, and (ii) the ratio of the WW and ZZ couplings of h can be different than the corresponding ratio in the Standard Model. Neither of these results can occur in models containing only Higgs d…
We investigate the implication of the recent discovery of a Higgs-like particle in the first phase of the LHC Run 1 on the Inert Higgs Doublet Model (IHDM). The determination of the Higgs couplings to SM particles and its intrinsic properties will get improved during the new LHC Run 2 starting this year. The new LHC Run 2 would also shade some light on the triple Higgs coupling. Such measurement is very important in order to establish the details of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. Given the importance of the Higgs couplings both at the LHC and $e^+e^-$ Linear Collider machines, ac…
The latest preliminary results of the searches for Higgs bosons and Supersymmetric particles at LEP are reviewed. The results include the data-taking in 1999 up to center-of-mass energies of 196 GeV. The combination of the results from the four LEP experiments leads to a significant increase of the detection sensitivity. No indication of a signal has been observed. In the Standard Model (SM) a lower limit of 102.6 GeV on the mass of the Higgs boson is set at 95% CL. In extended models, stringent limits are also set on the HZZ coupling. Interpretations in the Minimal extension of the Supersymme…
The possibility that the 125 GeV Higgs boson may decay into invisible non-standard-model (non-SM) particles is theoretically and phenomenologically intriguing. In this letter we investigate the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) to an invisibly decaying Higgs, in its proposed high luminosity running mode. We focus on the neutral current Higgs production channel which offers more kinematical handles than its charged current counterpart. The signal contains one electron, one jet and large missing energy. With a cut-based parton level analysis, we estimate that if the $hZZ$ …
We present the cross section for $e^{+}e^{-}\to hZ$ with arbitrary sets of electron and $Z$ boson polarizations at the full next-to-leading order in various extended Higgs models, such as the Higgs singlet model (HSM), the inert doublet model (IDM) and the two Higgs doublet model (2HDM). We systematically perform complete one-loop calculations to the helicity amplitudes in the on-shell renormalization scheme, and present the full analytic results as well as numerical evaluations. The deviation $ΔR^{hZ}$ in the total cross section from its standard model (SM) prediction is comprehensively analy…
We estimate the expected precision at a multi-TeV muon collider for measuring the Higgs boson couplings with electroweak gauge bosons, $HVV$ and $HHVV\ (V=W^\pm,Z)$, as well as the trilinear Higgs self-coupling $HHH$. At very high energies both single and double Higgs productions rely on the vector-boson fusion (VBF) topology. The outgoing remnant particles have a strong tendency to stay in the very forward region, leading to the configuration of the "inclusive process" and making it difficult to isolate $ZZ$ fusion events from the $WW$ fusion. In the single Higgs channel, we perform a maximum…
We study Higgs boson production in association with a pair of electroweak vector bosons ($WW,ZZ,Zγ$) at future $\epem$ colliders in the framework of the Standard Model. Total cross sections and distributions for the intermediate-mass Higgs are presented, with special emphasis on the Next Linear Collider (NLC) case operating at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} \simeq 500$ GeV, where the cross sections turn out to be more favourable than in larger-$\sqrt{s}$ collisions. We find that with an integrated luminosity of 20 fb$^{-1}$ there is a sizeable event rate for the $HWW$ and $HZγ$ (with a high…
Given the disappearance of the 750 GeV di-photon LHC signal and the absence of signals at high mass in this and other channels, significant constraints on the mixed Higgs-radion of the five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum model arise. By combining all channels, these constraints place a significant radion-mass-dependent lower bound on the radion vacuum expectation value that is fairly independent of the amount of Higgs radion mixing.
We study the supersymmetry parameter region excluded if no Higgs is found at LEP, and the region allowed if a Higgs boson is found at LEP. We describe the full seven parameter structure of Higgs sector. When supersymmetry phases are included, $\tan β$ greater than or equal to 2 is always allowed, and the lower limit on lightest Higgs mass if no signal is found is about 20% lower than in the Standard Model and about 10% lower than in the MSSM with phases set to 0, $π$
In this brief review we study the discovery potential of heavy Higgs induced single-top, same-sign top and triple-top quark productions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The context is general two Higgs doublet model where such processes can be induced by additional Yukawa couplings and sub-Tev Higgs bosons. We show that these processes can be discovered at the ongoing or future high luminosity LHC run. Discovery of these multi-top productions may shed light on the mechanism behind baryogenesis or cosmic inflation.
The FCC-ee offers powerful opportunities to determine the Higgs boson parameters, exploiting over $10^6$ ${\rm e^+e^- \to ZH}$ events and almost $10^5$ ${\rm WW \to H}$ events at centre-of-mass energies around 240 and 365 GeV. This essay spotlights the important measurements of the ZH production cross section and of the Higgs boson mass. The measurement of the total ZH cross section is an essential input to the absolute determination of the HZZ coupling -- a "standard candle" that can be used by all other measurements, including those made at hadron colliders -- at the per-mil level. A combina…
We use a recent upper limit from CDF on like-sign top pair production to place constraints on general new vector bosons and scalars mediating u u -> t t. The possible vector bosons comprise neutral colour singlets or octets, and charge 4/3 colour triplets or sextets, whereas the new scalars can be neutral colour singlets or octets and charge 4/3 colour sextets. We also estimate the expected bounds from like-sign top pair production at LHC in the near future. Then, we address the implications of these limits for the forward-backward asymmetry in t tbar production measured at Tevatron. In partic…
We take the standard model to be an effective theory including higher dimensional operators suppressed by scale $Λ$ and re-examine the higgs mass bounds from the requirements of vacuum stability. Our results show that the effects of the higher dimensional operators on the higgs mass limits are significant. As an implication of our results, we study the vacuum stability higgs mass bounds in theories with extra dimensions.
The KOTO experiment recently reported four candidate events in the signal region of $K_L\to π^0 ν\barν$ search, where the standard model only expects $0.10\pm 0.02$ events. If confirmed, this requires physics beyond the standard model to enhance the signal. We examine various new physics interpretations of the result including these: (1) heavy new physics boosting the standard model signal, (2) reinterpretation of "$ν\barν$" as a new light long-lived particle, or (3) reinterpretation of the whole signal as the production of a new light long-lived particle at the fixed target. We study the abov…
The forward-backward asymmetry for top quarks measured in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron shows an interesting deviation from standard model expectations. Among possible interpretations, the exchange of a non-universal, flavor-changing $Z^\prime$ is of some interest as it naturally predicts a top quark in the forward region of rapidity. To reproduce the size of the Tevatron asymmetry, the couplings of the $Z^\prime$ to standard model quarks must be large, inevitably leading to production of same-sign top quark pairs at the Tevatron and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We discus…
We study the prospect for discovering the $cg\to bH^+\to b A W^+$ process at the LHC. Induced by the top-flavor changing neutral Higgs coupling $ρ_{tc}$, the process may emerge if $m_{H^+} > m_A + m_{W^+}$, where $H^+$ and $A$ are charged and $CP$-odd Higgs bosons in the general two Higgs Doublet Model (g2HDM). We show that the $cg\to bH^+\to b A W^+$ process can be discovered at LHC Run 3, while the full Run 2 data at hand can constrain the parameter space significantly by searching for the same-sign dilepton final state. The process has unique implications on the hint of $gg\to A \to t \bar …
The recent diphoton excess signal at an invariant mass of 750 GeV can be interpreted in the framework of left-right symmetric models with additional scalar singlets and vector-like fermions. We propose a minimal scenario for such a purpose. Extending the LRSM framework to include these new vector-like fermionic fields, on the other hand, results in interesting phenomenological implications for the LRSM fermion masses and mixing. Furthermore, existence of such vector-like fermions can also have interesting implications for baryogenesis and the dark matter sector. The introduction of a real bi-t…
For an "invisible" dark photon $Z_d$ that dominantly decays into dark states, the running of its fine structure constant $α_d$ with momentum transfer $q > m_{Z_d}$ could be significant. A similar running in the kinetic mixing parameter $\varepsilon^2$ can be induced through its dependence on $α_d(q)$. The running of couplings could potentially be detected in "dark matter beam" experiments, for which theoretical considerations imply $α_d (m_{Z_d}) \lesssim 0.5$.
A brief review is given of the implications of the recent Brookhaven result on the muon anomaly ($a_μ$) for supersymmetry. We focus mainly on the implications of the recent results for the minimal supergravity unified model. We show that the observed difference implies the existence of sparticles most of which should become observable at the Large Hadron Collider. Further, as foreseen in works prior to the Brookhaven experiment the sign of the difference between experimental prediction of $a_μ$ and its Standard Model value determines the sign of the Higgs mixing parameter $μ$. The $μ$ sign has…
The phenomenological implications of the E6 inspired supersymmetric models based on the Standard Model gauge group together with extra U(1)_N gauge symmetry under which right-handed neutrinos have zero charge are examined. In these models single discrete symmetry forbids the tree-level flavour changing processes and the most dangerous operators that violate baryon and lepton numbers. The two-loop renormalisation group flow of the gauge and Yukawa couplings is explored and the qualitative pattern of the Higgs spectrum in the case of the quasi-fixed point scenario is discussed. These E6 inspired…
Recently the CDMS collaboration has reported an excess of events in the signal region of a search for dark matter scattering with Silicon nuclei. Three events on an expected background of 0.4 have a significance of about 2 sigma, and it is premature to conclude that this is a signal of dark matter. Nonetheless, it is important to examine the space of particle theories capable of explaining this excess, to see what theories are capable of explaining it, and how one might exclude it or find corroborating evidence in other channels. We examine a simplified model containing a scalar mediator parti…
Absence of the signals of the physics beyond the Standard Model at the available LHC energies means that the several of cosmic data peculiarities could be associated with an emergency of the new scattering mode. This reflective scattering mode can be used for explanations of the measurements performed under the study of extensive air showers (EAS).
Future precision measurements of the Standard Model (SM) parameters at the proposed Z-factories and Higgs factories may have significant impacts on new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). We illustrate this by focusing on the Type-II two Higgs doublet model. A multi-variable global fitting is performed with full one loop contributions to relevant couplings. The Higgs signal strength measurements at proposed Higgs factories can provide strong constraints on new physics and are found to be complementary to the Z-pole measurements.
Recently the ATLAS and CMS collaborations reported their search for a new heavy gauge boson $W'$ with one lepton plus missing transverse momentum. We find that $W^{(2)}$, the second Kaluza-Kelin (KK) state of the $W$ boson in the minimal Universal Extra Dimension (mUED) model, can be a good candidate for this signal, as its branching ratio into $\ellν$ is sizable. Moreover, nearly degenerate KK mass spectra in the mUED model yield generically very soft SM particle accompanying $W^{(2)}$ from the subsequent decays of the second KK quarks and gluons. In a hadron collider, this indirect $W^{(2)}$…
We study the implications for Two Higgs Doublet Models of the recent announcement at the LHC giving a tantalizing hint for a Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV decaying into two photons. We require that the experimental result be within a factor of two of the theoretical Standard Model prediction, and analyze the type I and type II models as well as the lepton-specific and flipped models, subject to this requirement. It is assumed that there is no new physics other than two Higgs doublets. In all of the models, we display the allowed region of parameter space taking the recent LHC announcement at fac…
We study the constraints implied by partial wave unitarity on new physics in the form of spin-zero di-boson resonances at LHC. We derive the scale where the effective description in terms of the SM supplemented by a single resonance is expected to break down depending on the resonance mass and signal cross-section. Likewise, we use unitarity arguments in order to set perturbativity bounds on renormalizable UV completions of the effective description. We finally discuss under which conditions scalar di-boson resonance signals can be accommodated within weakly-coupled models.
A rather high Higgs mass, m_h = 126 GeV, suggests that at least a part of the supersymmetric spectrum of the MSSM may live beyond O(1TeV) and hence inaccessible to the LHC. However, there are theoretical and phenomenological reasons supporting a possibility that charginos and neutralinos remain much closer to the electroweak scale. In this paper, we explore such a scenario in the light of recent Higgs measurements, mainly its di-photon decay rate, where the data might indicate a slight excess over the SM prediction. That excess could be fitted by the contribution of light charginos provided ta…
I discuss some essential features of the electroweak hierarchy problem and the ensuing motivation for weak-scale supersymmetry. Taking the hierarchy problem seriously, null results in searches for SUSY at the LHC favor specific regions of SUSY parameter space. More broadly, they suggest investigating a variety of alternative approaches to the hierarchy problem with diverse experimental signatures.
We look for possible spectral features and systematic effects in Fermi-LAT publicly available high-energy gamma-ray data by studying photons from the Galactic centre, nearby galaxy clusters, nearby brightest galaxies, AGNs, unassociated sources, hydrogen clouds and Earth Limb. Apart from already known 130 GeV gamma-ray excesses from the first two sources, we find no new statistically significant signal from others. Much of our effort goes to studying Earth Limb photons. In the energy range 30 GeV to 200 GeV the Earth Limb gamma-ray spectrum follows power-law with spectral index 2.87\pm 0.04 at…
New Physics searches at the LHC have increased significantly lower bounds on unknown particle masses. This increases quite dramatically the tension in the interpretation of the data: low energy precision data which are predicted accurately by the SM (LEP observables like M_W or loop induced rare processes like B --> X_s gamma or B_s --> mu+mu-) and quantities exhibiting an observed discrepancy between SM theory and experiment, most significantly found for the muon g-2, seem to be in conflict now. (g-2)_mu appears to be the most precisely understood observable which at the same time reveals a 3…
In view of the absence of any direct sign of New Physics (NP) at the LHC, the precise investigation of the Higgs properties becomes more and more important in our quest for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Coupling measurements play here an important role and not only complement the reach of the LHC but, depending on the physics scenarios, also allow for tests of NP scales beyond the ones accessible at present colliders. In this context, various representative scenarios beyond the SM will be reviewed.
The LHC data implies that the newly discovered Higgs boson h may be sterile (highly SM-like). In supersymmetric SMs (SSMs), Higgs couplings are often modified by Higgs mixing and stop loop corrections, so we study the Higgs sterility in the Higgs and stop sectors in two SSMs: (I) The Minimal SSM (MSSM). In the nearly decoupling region, the doublet-doublet mixing effect can only enhance C_{hb\bar b} by 2m_Z^2/M_A^2. Sterility places M_A\gtrsim 900 GeV. But it hardly constrains the stop sector due to the heaviness of Higgs boson mass m_h; (II) The next to MSSM(NMSSM). In the presence of doublet-…
We discuss the phenomenology of models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking which attempt to generate the observed fermion mass spectrum. After briefly describing the variety of and constraints on proposed models, we concentrate on the signatures of colored pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons and resonances at existing and proposed colliders. These particles provide a possibly unique signature: strongly produced resonances associated with electroweak symmetry breaking. (This is the subgroup report for the ``Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Beyond the Standard Model" working group of the DPF L…
An excess in $γ$-rays emanating from the galactic centre has recently been observed in the Fermi-LAT data. We investigate the new exciting possibility of fitting the signal spectrum by dark matter annihilating dominantly to a Higgs-pseudoscalar pair. We show that the fit to the $γ$-ray excess for the Higgs-pseudoscalar channel can be just as good as for annihilation into bottom-quark pairs. This channel arises naturally in a full model such as the next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) and we find regions where dark matter relic density, the $γ$-ray signal and other experimental…
The phrase "more is different" is often used to refer to the new, unexpected collective phenomena that can arise when the number of states in a given system is large. In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 Study, we describe 13 unexpected collective phenomena that can arise when the dark sector contains a large number of states, contrary to the usual assumptions. These 13 take-away lessons stretch across all of the domains of relevance for dark-matter physics, including collider signatures, direct-detection signatures, indirect-detection signatures, new perspectives on dark-matter complemen…
We consider the viability of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with a light ($m_{\tilde t_1} < $ 45 GeV) stop. In order for its relic abundance to be cosmologically significant, the photino as dark matter must be quite close in mass to the stop, $(m_{\tilde t_1} - m_{\tilde γ}) \simeq 3 - 7 $ GeV. However, as we show, the photino despite its low mass is virtually undetectable by either direct or indirect means. We also discuss the implications of these masses on the top quark branching ratios.
The requirements of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) and correct thermal relic density of Dark Matter (DM) predict large spin-independent direct detection cross section in scalar DM models based on underlying SO(10) non-supersymmetric GUT. Interpreting the CDMS signal events as DM recoil on nuclei, we study implications of this assumption on EWSB, Higgs boson mass and direct production of scalar DM at LHC experiments. We show that this interpretation indicates relatively light DM, M_DM ~ O(100) GeV, with large pair production cross section at LHC in correlation with the spin-independent di…
Unification of the gauge couplings would imply that time variations of the fine structure constant are accompanied by calculable and very significant time variations in the QCD scale parameter $Λ_{QCD}$. Since $Λ_{QCD}$ is the dominant factor in setting the hadron masses, estimates made by simple variations of the fine structure constant may not provide meaningful limits. There may also be related variations in Yukawa couplings and the electroweak scale. Implications for the 21 cm hyperfine transition, big bang nucleosynthesis, and the triple alpha process are discussed. We find that the first…
