Automated and robust portrait quality assessment (PQA) is of paramount importance in high-impact applications such as smartphone photography. This paper presents FHIQA, a learning-based approach to PQA that introduces a simple but effective quality score rescaling method based on image semantics, to enhance the precision of fine-grained image quality metrics while ensuring robust generalization to various scene settings beyond the training dataset. The proposed approach is validated by extensive experiments on the PIQ23 benchmark and comparisons with the current state of the art. The source code of FHIQA will be made publicly available on the PIQ23 GitHub repository at https://github.com/DXOMARK-Research/PIQ2023.
Lossy face image compression can degrade the image quality and the utility for the purpose of face recognition. This work investigates the effect of lossy image compression on a state-of-the-art face recognition model, and on multiple face image quality assessment models. The analysis is conducted over a range of specific image target sizes. Four compression types are considered, namely JPEG, JPEG 2000, downscaled PNG, and notably the new JPEG XL format. Frontal color images from the ColorFERET database were used in a Region Of Interest (ROI) variant and a portrait variant. We primarily conclu…

Personalized image aesthetics assessment (PIAA) is challenging due to its highly subjective nature. People's aesthetic tastes depend on diversified factors, including image characteristics and subject characters. The existing PIAA databases are limited in terms of annotation diversity, especially the subject aspect, which can no longer meet the increasing demands of PIAA research. To solve the dilemma, we conduct so far, the most comprehensive subjective study of personalized image aesthetics and introduce a new Personalized image Aesthetics database with Rich Attributes (PARA), which consists…

Recent years have witnessed the dramatically increased interest in face generation with generative adversarial networks (GANs). A number of successful GAN algorithms have been developed to produce vivid face images towards different application scenarios. However, little work has been dedicated to automatic quality assessment of such GAN-generated face images (GFIs), even less have been devoted to generalized and robust quality assessment of GFIs generated with unseen GAN model. Herein, we make the first attempt to study the subjective and objective quality towards generalized quality assessme…

In this work, we propose a no-reference video quality assessment method, aiming to achieve high-generalization capability in cross-content, -resolution and -frame rate quality prediction. In particular, we evaluate the quality of a video by learning effective feature representations in spatial-temporal domain. In the spatial domain, to tackle the resolution and content variations, we impose the Gaussian distribution constraints on the quality features. The unified distribution can significantly reduce the domain gap between different video samples, resulting in a more generalized quality featu…

Image beauty assessment is an important subject of computer vision. Therefore, building a model to mimic the image beauty assessment becomes an important task. To better imitate the behaviours of the human visual system (HVS), a complete survey about images of different categories should be implemented. This work focuses on image beauty assessment. In this study, the pairwise evaluation method was used, which is based on the Bradley-Terry model. We believe that this method is more accurate than other image rating methods within an image group. Additionally, Convolution neural network (CNN), wh…

Importance: Machine learning (ML) approaches to facial landmark localization carry great clinical potential for quantitative assessment of facial function as they enable high-throughput automated quantification of relevant facial metrics from photographs. However, translation from research settings to clinical applications requires important improvements. Objective: To develop an ML algorithm for accurate facial landmarks localization in photographs of facial palsy patients, and use it as part of an automated computer-aided diagnosis system. Design, Setting, and Participants: Facial landmarks …
DeepFakes are synthetic videos generated by swapping a face of an original image with the face of somebody else. In this paper, we describe our work to develop general, deep learning-based models to classify DeepFake content. We propose a novel framework for using Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based models, we call MRI-GAN, that utilizes perceptual differences in images to detect synthesized videos. We test our MRI-GAN approach and a plain-frames-based model using the DeepFake Detection Challenge Dataset. Our plain frames-based-model achieves 91% test accuracy and a model which uses our…
Image quality assessment (IQA) is an important element of a broad spectrum of applications ranging from automatic video streaming to display technology. Furthermore, the measurement of image quality requires a balanced investigation of image content and features. Our proposed approach extracts visual features by attaching global average pooling (GAP) layers to multiple Inception modules of on an ImageNet database pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN). In contrast to previous methods, we do not take patches from the input image. Instead, the input image is treated as a whole and is run …

Previous blind or No Reference (NR) video quality assessment (VQA) models largely rely on features drawn from natural scene statistics (NSS), but under the assumption that the image statistics are stationary in the spatial domain. Several of these models are quite successful on standard pictures. However, in Virtual Reality (VR) applications, foveated video compression is regaining attention, and the concept of space-variant quality assessment is of interest, given the availability of increasingly high spatial and temporal resolution contents and practical ways of measuring gaze direction. Dis…

Recently, increasing interest has been drawn in exploiting deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) for no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA). Despite of the notable success achieved, there is a broad consensus that training DCNNs heavily relies on massive annotated data. Unfortunately, IQA is a typical small sample problem. Therefore, most of the existing DCNN-based IQA metrics operate based on pre-trained networks. However, these pre-trained networks are not designed for IQA task, leading to generalization problem when evaluating different types of distortions. With this motivatio…

The process of rendering high dynamic range (HDR) images to be viewed on conventional displays is called tone mapping. However, tone mapping introduces distortions in the final image which may lead to visual displeasure. To quantify these distortions, we introduce a novel no-reference quality assessment technique for these tone mapped images. This technique is composed of two stages. In the first stage, we employ a convolutional neural network (CNN) to generate quality aware maps (also known as distortion maps) from tone mapped images by training it with the ground truth distortion maps. In th…

We consider the problem of capturing distortions arising from changes in frame rate as part of Video Quality Assessment (VQA). Variable frame rate (VFR) videos have become much more common, and streamed videos commonly range from 30 frames per second (fps) up to 120 fps. VFR-VQA offers unique challenges in terms of distortion types as well as in making non-uniform comparisons of reference and distorted videos having different frame rates. The majority of current VQA models require compared videos to be of the same frame rate, but are unable to adequately account for frame rate artifacts. The r…

Uncertainty of labels in clinical data resulting from intra-observer variability can have direct impact on the reliability of assessments made by deep neural networks. In this paper, we propose a method for modelling such uncertainty in the context of 2D echocardiography (echo), which is a routine procedure for detecting cardiovascular disease at point-of-care. Echo imaging quality and acquisition time is highly dependent on the operator's experience level. Recent developments have shown the possibility of automating echo image quality quantification by mapping an expert's assessment of qualit…
