We present a new decoder for the surface code, which combines the accuracy of the tensor-network decoders with the efficiency and parallelism of the belief-propagation algorithm. Our main idea is to replace the expensive tensor-network contraction step in the tensor-network decoders with the blockBP algorithm - a recent approximate contraction algorithm, based on belief propagation. Our decoder is therefore a belief-propagation decoder that works in the degenerate maximal likelihood decoding framework. Unlike conventional tensor-network decoders, our algorithm can run efficiently in parallel, and may therefore be suitable for real-time decoding. We numerically test our decoder and show that for a large range of lattice sizes and noise levels it delivers a logical error probability that outperforms the Minimal-Weight-Perfect-Matching (MWPM) decoder, sometimes by more than an order of magnitude.
Quantum LDPC codes are a promising direction for low overhead quantum computing. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the Union-Find decoder as adecoder for quantum LDPC codes. We prove that this decoder corrects all errors with weight up to An^α for some A, α > 0 for different classes of quantum LDPC codes such as toric codes and hyperbolic codes in any dimension D \geq 3 and quantum expander codes. To prove this result, we introduce a notion of covering radius which measures the spread of an error from its syndrome. We believe this notion could find application beyond the decoding p…
Hypergraph product codes are a class of constant-rate quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes equipped with a linear-time decoder called small-set-flip (SSF). This decoder displays sub-optimal performance in practice and requires very large error correcting codes to be effective. In this work, we present new hybrid decoders that combine the belief propagation (BP) algorithm with the SSF decoder. We present the results of numerical simulations when codes are subject to independent bit-flip and phase-flip errors. We provide evidence that the threshold of these codes is roughly 7.5% assumin…
Recent developments have shown the existence of quantum low-density parity check (qLDPC) codes with constant rate and linear distance. A natural question concerns the efficient decodability of these codes. In this paper, we present a linear time decoder for the recent quantum Tanner codes construction of asymptotically good qLDPC codes, which can correct all errors of weight up to a constant fraction of the blocklength. Our decoder is an iterative algorithm which searches for corrections within constant-sized regions. At each step, the corrections are found by reducing a locally defined and ef…
In previous work, we have shown that pseudocodewords can be used to characterize the behavior of decoders not only for classical codes but also for quantum stabilizer codes. With the insights obtained from this pseudocodewords-based analysis, we have also introduced a two-stage decoder based on pseudocodewords for quantum cycle codes that leads to improved decoding performance. In this paper, we consider quantum (stabilizer) color codes and propose a two-stage decoder that is a generalization of the pseudocodeword-based decoder for quantum cycle codes. Our decoder has only local or error-weigh…
We introduce an efficient decoder of the color code in $d\geq 2$ dimensions, the Restriction Decoder, which uses any $d$-dimensional toric code decoder combined with a local lifting procedure to find a recovery operation. We prove that the Restriction Decoder successfully corrects errors in the color code if and only if the corresponding toric code decoding succeeds. We also numerically estimate the Restriction Decoder threshold for the color code in two and three dimensions against the bit-flip and phase-flip noise with perfect syndrome extraction. We report that the 2D color code threshold $…
Recent developments in the field of deep learning have motivated many researchers to apply these methods to problems in quantum information. Torlai and Melko first proposed a decoder for surface codes based on neural networks. Since then, many other researchers have applied neural networks to study a variety of problems in the context of decoding. An important development in this regard was due to Varsamopoulos et al. who proposed a two-step decoder using neural networks. Subsequent work of Maskara et al. used the same concept for decoding for various noise models. We propose a similar two-ste…
Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two distant parties to share encryption keys with security based on laws of quantum mechanics. In order to share the keys, the quantum bits have to be transmitted from the sender to the receiver over a noisy quantum channel. In order to transmit this information, efficient encoders and decoders need to be designed. However, large-scale design of quantum encoders and decoders have to depend on the channel characteristics and require look-up tables which require memory that is exponential in the number of qubits. In order to alleviate that, this paper aims t…
Quantum low-density parity-check codes can be decoded using a syndrome based $\mathrm{GF}(4)$ belief propagation decoder. However, the performance of this decoder is limited both by unavoidable $4$-cycles in the code's factor graph and the degenerate nature of quantum errors. For the subclass of CSS codes, the number of $4$-cycles can be reduced by breaking an error into an $X$ and $Z$ component and decoding each with an individual $\mathrm{GF}(2)$ based decoder. However, this comes at the expense of ignoring potential correlations between these two error components. We present a number of mod…
The design of decoding algorithms is a significant technological component in the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers. Often design of quantum decoders is inspired by classical decoding algorithms, but there are no general principles for building quantum decoders from classical decoders. Given any pair of classical codes, we can build a quantum code using the hypergraph product, yielding a hypergraph product code. Here we show we can also lift the decoders for these classical codes. That is, given oracle access to a minimum weight decoder for the relevant classical codes, the corre…
Homological product codes are a class of codes that can have improved distance while retaining relatively low stabilizer weight. We show how to build union-find decoders for these codes, using a union-find decoder for one of the codes in the product and a brute force decoder for the other code. We apply this construction to the specific case of the product of a surface code with a small code such as a $[[4,2,2]]$ code, which we call an augmented surface code. The distance of the augmented surface code is the product of the distance of the surface code with that of the small code, and the union…
There has been a rise in decoding quantum error correction codes with neural network based decoders, due to the good decoding performance achieved and adaptability to any noise model. However, the main challenge is scalability to larger code distances due to an exponential increase of the error syndrome space. Note that, successfully decoding the surface code under realistic noise assumptions will limit the size of the code to less than 100 qubits with current neural network based decoders. Such a problem can be tackled by a distributed way of decoding, similar to the Renormalization Group (RG…
Fault-tolerant quantum computation relies on scaling up quantum error correcting codes in order to suppress the error rate on the encoded quantum states. Topological codes, such as the surface code or color codes are leading candidates for practical scalable quantum error correction and require efficient and scalable decoders. In this work, we propose and study the efficiency of a decoder for 2D topological color codes on the 4.8.8 lattice, by building on the work of [1] for color codes on hexagonal lattices. The decoder is based on a rescaling approach, in which syndrome information on a part…
Quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes are quantum stabilizer codes where each stabilizer acts on a constant number of qubits and each qubit is acted on by a constant number of stabilizers. We study qLDPC codes constructed from balanced products and lossless expanders. We found that assuming the existence of 2-sided lossless expander graphs with free group action, the resulting qLDPC codes have constant rate, linear distance, and linear time decoders.
Belief-propagation (BP) decoders play a vital role in modern coding theory, but they are not suitable to decode quantum error-correcting codes because of a unique quantum feature called error degeneracy. Inspired by an exact mapping between BP and deep neural networks, we train neural BP decoders for quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with a loss function tailored to error degeneracy. Training substantially improves the performance of BP decoders for all families of codes we tested and may solve the degeneracy problem which plagues the decoding of quantum LDPC codes.
We propose a new cellular automaton (CA), the Sweep Rule, which generalizes Toom's rule to any locally Euclidean lattice. We use the Sweep Rule to design a local decoder for the toric code in $d\geq 3$ dimensions, the Sweep Decoder, and rigorously establish a lower bound on its performance. We also numerically estimate the Sweep Decoder threshold for the three-dimensional toric code on the cubic and body-centered cubic lattices for phenomenological phase-flip noise. Our results lead to new CA decoders with provable error-correction thresholds for other topological quantum codes including the c…

We still do not have perfect decoders for topological codes that can satisfy all needs of different experimental setups. Recently, a few neural network based decoders have been studied, with the motivation that they can adapt to a wide range of noise models, and can easily run on dedicated chips without a full-fledged computer. The later feature might lead to fast speed and the ability to operate at low temperatures. However, a question which has not been addressed in previous works is whether neural network decoders can handle 2D topological codes with large distances. In this work, we provid…
We introduce a decoder for the 3D color code with boundaries, which is a variation of the restriction decoder introduced by Kubicka and Delfosse. Specifically, we adapt the lift procedure to efficiently find a correction on qubits adjacent to a boundary. We numerically estimate a threshold of $4\% - 8\%$ for Pauli $X$ errors and a threshold of $0.7\% - 0.8\%$ for Pauli $Z$ errors. Our work is a first step towards characterizing the performance of Bombín's recently proposed "colorful quantum computing."
We develop a most likely error Pauli error decoding algorithm for stabiliser codes based on general purpose integer optimisation. Using this decoder we analyse the performance of holographic codes against Pauli errors and find numerical evidence for thresholds against Pauli errors for bulk qubits. We compare the performance of holographic code families of various code rates and find phenomenological Pauli error thresholds ranging from $7\%$ to $16\%$, depending on the code rate. Additionally we give numerical evidence that specific distance measures of the codes we consider scales polynomially…
The color code is remarkable for its ability to perform fault-tolerant logic gates. This motivates the design of practical decoders that minimise the resource cost of color-code quantum computation. Here we propose a decoder for the planar color code with a triangular boundary where we match syndrome defects on a nontrivial manifold that has the topology of a Möbius strip. A basic implementation of our decoder used on the color code with hexagonal lattice geometry demonstrates a logical failure rate that is competitive with the optimal performance of the surface code, $\sim p^{α\sqrt{n}}$, wit…
In this work we develop a general tensor network decoder for 2D codes. Specifically, we propose a decoder that approximates maximally likelihood decoding for 2D stabiliser and subsystem codes subject to Pauli noise. For a code consisting of $n$ qubits our decoder has a runtime of $O(n\log n+nχ^3)$, where $χ$ is an approximation parameter. We numerically demonstrate the power of this decoder by studying four classes of codes under three noise models, namely regular surface codes, irregular surface codes, subsystem surface codes and colour codes, under bit-flip, phase-flip and depolarising noise…
Fast classical processing is essential for most quantum fault-tolerance architectures. We introduce a sliding-window decoding scheme that provides fast classical processing for the surface code through parallelism. Our scheme divides the syndromes in spacetime into overlapping windows along the time direction, which can be decoded in parallel with any inner decoder. With this parallelism, our scheme can solve the decoding throughput problem as the code scales up, even if the inner decoder is slow. When using min-weight perfect matching and union-find as the inner decoders, we observe circuit-l…
A fast fault-tolerant decoder for qubit and qudit surface codes
Rev. Lett. 111,200501(2013)]。我们研究它的性能时,物理qudits和症状的测量受到广义不相关的位翻转噪声(和高维等效)。我们表明,适当的增强解码器和足够高的qudit维数,可以实现超过8%的错误率的阈值。
Machine learning has the potential to become an important tool in quantum error correction as it allows the decoder to adapt to the error distribution of a quantum chip. An additional motivation for using neural networks is the fact that they can be evaluated by dedicated hardware which is very fast and consumes little power. Machine learning has been previously applied to decode the surface code. However, these approaches are not scalable as the training has to be redone for every system size which becomes increasingly difficult. In this work the existence of local decoders for higher dimensi…
We propose an error correction procedure based on a cellular automaton, the sweep rule, which is applicable to a broad range of codes beyond topological quantum codes. For simplicity, however, we focus on the three-dimensional (3D) toric code on the rhombic dodecahedral lattice with boundaries and prove that the resulting local decoder has a non-zero error threshold. We also numerically benchmark the performance of the decoder in the setting with measurement errors using various noise models. We find that this error correction procedure is remarkably robust against measurement errors and is al…
Surface codes are a promising method of quantum error correction and the basis of many proposed quantum computation implementations. However, their efficient decoding is still not fully explored. Recently, approaches based on machine learning techniques have been proposed by Torlai and Melko as well as Varsamopoulos et al. In these approaches, a so called high level decoder is used to post-correct an underlying decoder by correcting logical errors. A significant problem is that these methods require large amounts of training data even for relatively small code distances. The above-mentioned me…
Quantum Error Correction (QEC) is required in quantum computers to mitigate the effect of errors on physical qubits. When adopting a QEC scheme based on surface codes, error decoding is the most computationally expensive task in the classical electronic back-end. Decoders employing neural networks (NN) are well-suited for this task but their hardware implementation has not been presented yet. This work presents a space exploration of fully-connected feed-forward NN decoders for small distance surface codes. The goal is to optimize the neural network for high decoding performance, while keeping…
Finding optimal correction of errors in generic stabilizer codes is a computationally hard problem, even for simple noise models. While this task can be simplified for codes with some structure, such as topological stabilizer codes, developing good and efficient decoders still remains a challenge. In our work, we systematically study a very versatile class of decoders based on feedforward neural networks. To demonstrate adaptability, we apply neural decoders to the triangular color and toric codes under various noise models with realistic features, such as spatially-correlated errors. We repor…
Quantum error correction is an essential technique for constructing a scalable quantum computer. In order to implement quantum error correction with near-term quantum devices, a fast and near-optimal decoding method is demanded. A decoder based on machine learning is considered as one of the most viable solutions for this purpose, since its prediction is fast once training has been done, and it is applicable to any quantum error correcting code and any noise model. So far, various formulations of the decoding problem as the task of machine learning have been proposed. Here, we discuss general …
