The recent trend towards the application of deep structured techniques has revealed the limits of huge models in natural language processing. This has reawakened the interest in traditional machine learning algorithms, which have proved still to be competitive in certain contexts, in particular low-resource settings. In parallel, model selection has become an essential task to boost performance at reasonable cost, even more so when we talk about processes involving domains where the training and/or computational resources are scarce. Against this backdrop, we evaluate the early estimation of learning curves as a practical mechanism for selecting the most appropriate model in scenarios characterized by the use of non-deep learners in resource-lean settings. On the basis of a formal approximation model previously evaluated under conditions of wide availability of training and validation resources, we study the reliability of such an approach in a different and much more demanding operationalenvironment. Using as case study the generation of PoS taggers for Galician, a language belonging to the Western Ibero-Romance group, the experimental results are consistent with our expectations.

POS Tagging serves as a preliminary task for many NLP applications. Kannada is a relatively poor Indian language with very limited number of quality NLP tools available for use. An accurate and reliable POS Tagger is essential for many NLP tasks like shallow parsing, dependency parsing, sentiment analysis, named entity recognition. We present a statistical POS tagger for Kannada using different machine learning and neural network models. Our Kannada POS tagger outperforms the state-of-the-art Kannada POS tagger by 6%. Our contribution in this paper is three folds - building a generic POS Tagge…

Part-of-speech (POS) tagging plays an important role in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Its applications can be found in many NLP tasks such as named entity recognition, syntactic parsing, dependency parsing and text chunking. In the investigation conducted in this paper, we utilize the technologies of two widely-used toolkits, ClearNLP and Stanford POS Tagger, as well as develop two new POS taggers for Vietnamese, then compare them to three well-known Vietnamese taggers, namely JVnTagger, vnTagger and RDRPOSTagger. We make a systematic comparison to find out the tagger having the best perf…

Part-of-speech (POS) taggers for low-resource languages which are exclusively based on various forms of weak supervision - e.g., cross-lingual transfer, type-level supervision, or a combination thereof - have been reported to perform almost as well as supervised ones. However, weakly supervised POS taggers are commonly only evaluated on languages that are very different from truly low-resource languages, and the taggers use sources of information, like high-coverage and almost error-free dictionaries, which are likely not available for resource-poor languages. We train and evaluate state-of-th…

Unsupervised part of speech (POS) tagging is often framed as a clustering problem, but practical taggers need to \textit{ground} their clusters as well. Grounding generally requires reference labeled data, a luxury a low-resource language might not have. In this work, we describe an approach for low-resource unsupervised POS tagging that yields fully grounded output and requires no labeled training data. We find the classic method of Brown et al. (1992) clusters well in our use case and employ a decipherment-based approach to grounding. This approach presumes a sequence of cluster IDs is a `ci…
We present an algorithm that automatically learns context constraints using statistical decision trees. We then use the acquired constraints in a flexible POS tagger. The tagger is able to use information of any degree: n-grams, automatically learned context constraints, linguistically motivated manually written constraints, etc. The sources and kinds of constraints are unrestricted, and the language model can be easily extended, improving the results. The tagger has been tested and evaluated on the WSJ corpus.

Punctuation restoration is an important post-processing step in automatic speech recognition. Among other kinds of external information, part-of-speech (POS) taggers provide informative tags, suggesting each input token's syntactic role, which has been shown to be beneficial for the punctuation restoration task. In this work, we incorporate an external POS tagger and fuse its predicted labels into the existing language model to provide syntactic information. Besides, we propose sequence boundary sampling (SBS) to learn punctuation positions more efficiently as a sequence tagging task. Experime…
Improvement in machine learning-based NLP performance are often presented with bigger models and more complex code. This presents a trade-off: better scores come at the cost of larger tools; bigger models tend to require more during training and inference time. We present multiple methods for measuring the size of a model, and for comparing this with the model's performance. In a case study over part-of-speech tagging, we then apply these techniques to taggers for eight languages and present a novel analysis identifying which taggers are size-performance optimal. Results indicate that some cla…
Part-of-speech (POS) tagging is a process of assigning the words in a text corresponding to a particular part of speech. A fundamental version of POS tagging is the identification of words as nouns, verbs, adjectives etc. For processing natural languages, Part of Speech tagging is a prominent tool. It is one of the simplest as well as most constant and statistical model for many NLP applications. POS Tagging is an initial stage of linguistics, text analysis like information retrieval, machine translator, text to speech synthesis, information extraction etc. In POS Tagging we assign a Part of S…
This paper addresses the issue of {\sc pos} tagger evaluation. Such evaluation is usually performed by comparing the tagger output with a reference test corpus, which is assumed to be error-free. Currently used corpora contain noise which causes the obtained performance to be a distortion of the real value. We analyze to what extent this distortion may invalidate the comparison between taggers or the measure of the improvement given by a new system. The main conclusion is that a more rigorous testing experimentation setting/designing is needed to reliably evaluate and compare tagger accuracies…

Character-level models have been used extensively in recent years in NLP tasks as both supplements and replacements for closed-vocabulary token-level word representations. In one popular architecture, character-level LSTMs are used to feed token representations into a sequence tagger predicting token-level annotations such as part-of-speech (POS) tags. In this work, we examine the behavior of POS taggers across languages from the perspective of individual hidden units within the character LSTM. We aggregate the behavior of these units into language-level metrics which quantify the challenges t…

This research paper presents a part-of-speech (POS) annotated dataset and tagger tool for the low-resource Uzbek language. The dataset includes 12 tags, which were used to develop a rule-based POS-tagger tool. The corpus text used in the annotation process was made sure to be balanced over 20 different fields in order to ensure its representativeness. Uzbek being an agglutinative language so the most of the words in an Uzbek sentence are formed by adding suffixes. This nature of it makes the POS-tagging task difficult to find the stems of words and the right part-of-speech they belong to. The …
Building Part-of-Speech (POS) taggers for code-mixed Indian languages is a particularly challenging problem in computational linguistics due to a dearth of accurately annotated training corpora. ICON, as part of its NLP tools contest has organized this challenge as a shared task for the second consecutive year to improve the state-of-the-art. We bootstrap a state-of-the-art part-of-speech tagger to tag Italian Twitter data, in the context of the Evalita 2016 PoSTWITA shared task. We show that training the tagger on native Twitter data enriched with little amounts of specifically selected gold data and additional silver-labelled data scraped from Facebook, yields better results than using large amounts of manually annotated data from a mix of genres.
A tagger is a mandatory segment of most text scrutiny systems, as it consigned a s yntax class (e.g., noun, verb, adjective, and adverb) to every word in a sentence. We report our development of a simple but fast and efficient inductive unsupervised semantic tagger for Chinese words. A POS hand-tagged corpus of 348,000 words is used. The corpus is being tagged in two steps. First, possible semantic tags are selected from a semantic dictionary(Tong Yi Ci Ci Lin), the POS and the conditional probability of semantic from POS, i.e., P(S|P). The final semantic tag is then assigned by considering the semantic tags before and after the current word and the semantic-word conditional probability P(S|W) derived from the first step. Semantic bigram probabilities P(S|…
Concerning different approaches to automatic PoS tagging: EngCG-2, a constraint-based morphological tagger, is compared in a double-blind test with a state-of-the-art statistical tagger on a common disambiguation task using a common tag set. The experiments show that for the same amount of remaining ambiguity, the error rate of the statistical tagger is one order of magnitude greater than that of the rule-based one. The two related issues of priming effects compromising the results and disagreement between human annotators are also addressed.

Researches on Indonesian named entity (NE) tagger have been conducted since years ago. However, most did not use deep learning and instead employed traditional machine learning algorithms such as association rule, support vector machine, random forest, naïve bayes, etc. In those researches, word lists as gazetteers or clue words were provided to enhance the accuracy. Here, we attempt to employ deep learning in our Indonesian NE tagger. We use long short-term memory (LSTM) as the topology since it is the state-of-the-art of NE tagger. Part of Speech (POS) tagging is crucial to Natural Language Processing (NLP). It is a well-studied topic in several resource-rich languages. However, the development of computational linguistic resources is still in its infancy despite the existence of numerous languages that are historically and literary rich. Assamese, an Indian scheduled language, spoken by more than 25 million people, falls under this category. In this paper, we present a Deep Learning (DL)-based POS tagger for Assamese. The development process is divided into two stages. In the first phase, several pre-trained word embedd…

Part-of-speech (POS) tagging is a fundamental component for performing natural language tasks such as parsing, information extraction, and question answering. When POS taggers are trained in one domain and applied in significantly different domains, their performance can degrade dramatically. We present a methodology for rapid adaptation of POS taggers to new domains. Our technique is unsupervised in that a manually annotated corpus for the new domain is not necessary. We use suffix information gathered from large amounts of raw text as well as orthographic information to increase the lexical …

The architecture model that was used is introduced. The greek version of the spaCy platform was added into the source code, a feature that did not exist before our contribution, and was used for building the models. Additionally, a part of speech tagger was trained that can detect the morphology of the tokens and performs higher than the state-of-the-art…
Code-mixed texts are widespread nowadays due to the advent of social media. Since these texts combine two languages to formulate a sentence, it gives rise to various research problems related to Natural Language Processing. In this paper, we try to excavate one such problem, namely, Parts of Speech tagging of code-mixed texts. We have built a system that can POS tag English-Bengali code-mixed data where the Bengali words were written in Roman script. Our approach initially involves the collection and cleaning of English-Bengali code-mixed tweets. These tweets were used as a development dataset…

We present an error analysis of neural UPOS taggers to evaluate why using gold standard tags has such a large positive contribution to parsing performance while using predicted UPOS tags either harms performance or offers a negligible improvement. We evaluate what neural dependency parsers implicitly learn about word types and how this relates to the errors taggers make to explain the minimal impact using predicted tags has on parsers. We also present a short analysis on what contexts result in reductions in tagging performance. We then mask UPOS tags based on errors made by taggers to tease a…

We address the problem of Part of Speech tagging (POS) in the context of linguistic code switching (CS). CS is the phenomenon where a speaker switches between two languages or variants of the same language within or across utterances, known as intra-sentential or inter-sentential CS, respectively. Processing CS data is especially challenging in intra-sentential data given state of the art monolingual NLP technology since such technology is geared toward the processing of one language at a time. In this paper we explore multiple strategies of applying state of the art POS taggers to CS data. We…

This work focuses on the rapid development of linguistic annotation tools for resource-poor languages. We experiment several cross-lingual annotation projection methods using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) models. The distinctive feature of our approach is that our multilingual word representation requires only a parallel corpus between the source and target language. More precisely, our method has the following characteristics: (a) it does not use word alignment information, (b) it does not assume any knowledge about foreign languages, which makes it applicable to a wide range of resource-po…

Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging is an old and fundamental task in natural language processing. While supervised POS taggers have shown promising accuracy, it is not always feasible to use supervised methods due to lack of labeled data. In this project, we attempt to unsurprisingly induce POS tags by iteratively looking for a recurring pattern of words through a hierarchical agglomerative clustering process. Our approach shows promising results when compared to the tagging results of the state-of-the-art unsupervised POS taggers.
Part-of-speech (POS) tagging is considered as one of the basic but necessary tools which are required for many Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications such as word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, information processing, parsing, question answering, and machine translation. Performance of the current POS taggers in Amharic is not as good as that of the contemporary POS taggers available for English and other European languages. The aim of this work is to improve POS tagging performance for the Amharic language, which was never above 91%. Usage of morphological knowledge, an …

Previous studies have shown that linguistic features of a word such as possession, genitive or other grammatical cases can be employed in word representations of a named entity recognition (NER) tagger to improve the performance for morphologically rich languages. However, these taggers require external morphological disambiguation (MD) tools to function which are hard to obtain or non-existent for many languages. In this work, we propose a model which alleviates the need for such disambiguators by jointly learning NER and MD taggers in languages for which one can provide a list of candidate m…
A German language model for the Xerox HMM tagger is presented. This model's performance is compared with two other German taggers with partial parameter re-estimation and full adaption of parameters from pre-tagged corpora. The ambiguity types resolved by this model are analysed and compared to ambiguity types of English and French. Finally, the model's error types are described. I argue that although the overall performance of these models for German is comparable to results for English and French, a more exact analysis demonstrates important differences in the types of disambiguation involve…
Automatic text tagging is an important component in higher level analysis of text corpora, and its output can be used in many natural language processing applications. Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging is an important component of the NLP pipeline, but many low-resource languages lack labeled data for training. An established method for training a POS tagger in such a scenario is to create a labeled training set by transferring from high-resource languages. As one of the fundamental tasks in text analysis, phrase mining aims at extracting quality phrases from a text corpus. Phrase mining is important in various tasks such as information extraction/retrieval, taxonomy construction, and topic modeling. Most existing methods rely on complex, trained linguistic analyzers, and thus likely have unsatisfactory performance on text corpora of new domains and genres without extra but expensive adaption. Recently, a few data-driven methods have been developed successfully for extraction of phrases from massive domain-specific text. However, none of the stat…

Traditional syntax models typically leverage part-of-speech (POS) information by constructing features from hand-tuned templates. We demonstrate that a better approach is to utilize POS tags as a regularizer of learned representations. We propose a simple method for learning a stacked pipeline of models which we call "stack-propagation". We apply this to dependency parsing and tagging, where we use the hidden layer of the tagger network as a representation of the input tokens for the parser. At test time, our parser does not require predicted POS tags. On 19 languages from the Universal Depend…
