The nonincreasing feature of temporal quantum steering under a completely positive trace-preserving (CPTP) map, as proposed by Chen, et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 020503 (2016), has been considered as a practical measure of non-Markovianity. In this paper, we utilize an all-optical scheme to simulate a non-Markovian collision model and to examine how Gaussian steering can be used as a tool for quantifying the non-Markovianity of a structured continuous variable (CV) Gaussian channel. By modifying the reflectivity of the beam splitters (BSs), we are able to tune the degree of non-Markovianity of the channel. After analyzing the non-Markovian degree of the dissipative channel within two steering scenarios, we discovered that the Gaussian steering-based non-Markovian measure depends the specific scenario because of the asymmetry of Gaussian steering. We also compared the Gaussian steering based non-Markovianity to the one based on the violation of the divisibility of CPTP map.
We provide further characterization of non-Markovian quantum dynamics based on the concept of divisible dynamical maps. In analogy to entanglement witness we propose a non-Markovianity witness and introduce the corresponding measure of non-Markovianity. We also provide characterization of non-Markovianity in terms of entropic quantities, fidelity and Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information.
We show the connection between a witness that detects dynamical maps with initial system-environment correlations and a witness that detects non-Markovian open quantum systems. Our analysis is based on studying the role that state preparation plays in witnessing violations of contractivity of open quantum system dynamics. Contractivity is a property of some quantum processes where the trace distance of density matrices decrease with time. From this, we show how a witness of initial-correlations is an upper bound to a witness of non-Markovianity. We discuss how this relationship shows further c…
We develop a theory of linear witnesses for detecting non-Markovianity, based on the geometric structure of the set of Choi states for all Markovian evolutions having Lindblad type generators. We show that the set of all such Markovian Choi states form a convex and compact set under the small time interval approximation. Invoking geometric Hahn-Banach theorem, we construct linear witnesses to separate a given non-Markovian Choi state from the set of Markovian Choi states. We present examples of such witnesses for dephasing channel and Pauli channel in case of qubits. We further investigate the…
We employ frames consisting of rank-one projectors (i.e. pure quantum states) and their induced informationally complete quantum measurements (IC-POVMs) to represent generally mixed quantum states by quasi-probability distributions. In the case of discrete frames on finite dimensional systems this results in a vector like representation by quasi-probability vectors, while for the continuous frame of coherent states in continuous variable (CV) systems the approach directly leads to the celebrated representation by Glauber-Sudarshan P-functions and Husimi Q-functions. We explain that the Kolmogo…
We put forward a measure based on Gaussian steering to quantify the non-Markovianity of continuous-variable (CV) Gaussian quantum channels. We employ the proposed measure to assess and compare the non-Markovianity of a quantum Brownian motion (QBM) channel, originating from the interaction with Ohmic and sub-Ohmic environments with spectral densities described by a Lorentz-Drude cutoff, both at high and low temperatures, showing that sub-Ohmic, high temperature environments lead to highly non-Markovian evolution, with cyclic backflows of Gaussian steerability from the environment to the system…
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is a type of quantum correlation which allows one to remotely prepare, or steer, the state of a distant quantum system. While EPR steering can be thought of as a purely spatial correlation there does exist a temporal analogue, in the form of single-system temporal steering. However, a precise quantification of such temporal steering has been lacking. Here we show that it can be measured, via semidefinite programming, with a temporal steerable weight, in direct analogy to the recently proposed EPR steerable weight. We find a useful property of the temporal…
Capturing specific kinds of quantum correlation is of paramount importance for quantum networking. Different routes can be taken to achieve this task, highlighting different novel aspects of such quantum correlations. Following the recent theoretical results by Yadin, Fadel and Gessner [Nat. Commun. 12, 2410 (2021)], we demonstrate experimentally how steering manifests in the metrological abilities of a bipartite state. Our results confirm the relevance of this novel approach, and compare the outcome with already employed alternatives.
The modeling of natural phenomena via a Markov process --- a process for which the future is independent of the past, given the present--- is ubiquitous in many fields of science. Within this context, it is of foremost importance to develop ways to check from the available empirical data if the underlying mechanism is indeed Markovian. A paradigmatic example is given by data processing inequalities, the violation of which is an unambiguous proof of the non-Markovianity of the process. Here, our aim is twofold. First we show the existence of a monogamy-like type of constraints, beyond data proc…
Non-Markovian effects can speed up the dynamics of quantum systems while the limits of the evolution time can be derived by quantifiers of quantum statistical speed. We introduce a witness for characterizing the non-Markovianity of quantum evolutions through the Hilbert-Schmidt speed (HSS), which is a special type of quantum statistical speed. This witness has the advantage of not requiring diagonalization of evolved density matrix. Its sensitivity is investigated by considering several paradigmatic instances of open quantum systems, such as one qubit subject to phase-covariant noise and Pauli…
We study how the number of employed modes impacts the ability to witness non-Markovian evolutions via correlation backflows in continuous-variable quantum dynamics. We first prove the existence of non-Markovian Gaussian evolutions that do not show any revivals in the correlations between the mode evolving through the dynamics and a single ancillary mode. We then demonstrate how this scenario radically changes when two ancillary modes are considered. Indeed, we show that the same evolutions can show correlation backflows along a specific bipartition when three-mode states are employed, and wher…
We investigate the dynamics of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering in a soliplasmonic system where the asymmetrical coupling between linear solitons and nonlinear plasmons is controlled by the weak soliton amplitude. We employ non-Hermitian quantum dynamics to evaluate quantum steering witnesses for different coupling strengths. Quantum steering is examined for an initially Fock state and we briefly discuss Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement for initially coherent states. We numerically investigate the adjustability of the witnessing periods of quantum steering via tunable coupling strength of …
An exact canonical master equation of the Lindblad form is derived for a central spin interacting uniformly with a sea of completely unpolarized spins. The Kraus operators for the dynamical map are also derived. The non-Markovianity of the dynamics in terms of the divisibility breaking of the dynamical map and increase of the trace distance fidelity between quantum states is shown. Moreover, it is observed that the irreversible entropy production rate is always negative (for a fixed initial state) whenever the dynamics exhibits non-Markovian behavior. In continuation with the study of witnessi…
Quantum correlations are at the core of current developments in quantum technologies. Certification protocols of entanglement and steering, suitable for continuous-variable non-Gaussian states are scarce and generally highly demanding from an experimental point of view. We propose a protocol based on Fisher information for witnessing steering in general continuous-variable bipartite states, through homodyne detection. It proves to be relevant for the detection of non-Gaussian steering in scenarios where witnesses based on Gaussian features like the covariance matrix are shown to fail.
Quantum systems of high dimensions are attracting a lot of attention because they feature interesting properties when it comes to observing entanglement or other forms of correlations. In particular, their improved resistance to noise is favourable for experiments in quantum communication or quantum cryptography. However, witnessing this high-dimensional nature remains challenging, especially when the assumptions on the parties involved are weak, typically when one of them is considered as a black box. In this context, the concept of genuine high-dimensional steering has been recently introduc…
