In recent years, weakly supervised semantic segmentation using image-level labels as supervision has received significant attention in the field of computer vision. Most existing methods have addressed the challenges arising from the lack of spatial information in these labels by focusing on facilitating supervised learning through the generation of pseudo-labels from class activation maps (CAMs). Due to the localized pattern detection of CNNs, CAMs often emphasize only the most discriminative parts of an object, making it challenging to accurately distinguish foreground objects from each other and the background. Recent studies have shown that Vision Transformer (ViT) features, due to their global view, are more effective in capturing the scene layout than CNNs. However, the use of hierarchical ViTs has not been extensively explored in this field. This work explores the use of Swin Transformer by proposing "SWTformer" to enhance the accuracy of the initial seed CAMs by bringing local and global views together. SWTformer-V1 generates class probabilities and CAMs using only the patch tokens as features. SWTformer-V2 incorporates a multi-scale feature fusion mechanism to extract additional information and utilizes a background-aware mechanism to generate more accurate localization maps with improved cross-object discrimination. Based on experiments on the PascalVOC 2012 dataset, SWTformer-V1 achieves a 0.98% mAP higher localization accuracy, outperforming state-of-the-art models. It also yields comparable performance by 0.82% mIoU on average higher than other methods in generating initial localization maps, depending only on the classification network. SWTformer-V2 further improves the accuracy of the generated seed CAMs by 5.32% mIoU, further proving the effectiveness of the local-to-global view provided by the Swin transformer. This paper reports a new solution of leveraging temporal classification to support weakly supervised object detection (WSOD). Specifically, we introduce raster scan-order techniques to serialize 2D images into 1D sequence data, and then leverage a combined LSTM (Long, Short-Term Memory) and CTC (Connectionist Temporal Classification) network to achieve object localization based on a total count (of interested objects). We term our proposed network LSTM-CCTC (Count-based CTC). This "learning from counting" strategy differs from existing WSOD methods in that our approach automatically identifies…

To improve the generalization of 3D human pose estimators, many existing deep learning based models focus on adding different augmentations to training poses. However, data augmentation techniques are limited to the "seen" pose combinations and hard to infer poses with rare "unseen" joint positions. To address this problem, we present CameraPose, a weakly-supervised framework for 3D human pose estimation from a single image, which can not only be applied on 2D-3D pose pairs but also on 2D alone annotations. By adding a camera parameter branch, any in-the-wild 2D annotations can be fed into our…

Semantic segmentation is a challenging task in the absence of densely labelled data. Only relying on class activation maps (CAM) with image-level labels provides deficient segmentation supervision. Prior works thus consider pre-trained models to produce coarse saliency maps to guide the generation of pseudo segmentation labels. However, the commonly used off-line heuristic generation process cannot fully exploit the benefits of these coarse saliency maps. Motivated by the significant inter-task correlation, we propose a novel weakly supervised multi-task framework termed as AuxSegNet, to lever…
Automatic detection of firearms is important for enhancing the security and safety of people, however, it is a challenging task owing to the wide variations in shape, size, and appearance of firearms. Also, most of the generic object detectors process axis-aligned rectangular areas though, a thin and long rifle may actually cover only a small percentage of that area and the rest may contain irrelevant details suppressing the required object signatures. To handle these challenges, we propose a weakly supervised Orientation Aware Object Detection (OAOD) algorithm which learns to detect oriented …

A crucial task in scene understanding is 3D object detection, which aims to detect and localize the 3D bounding boxes of objects belonging to specific classes. Existing 3D object detectors heavily rely on annotated 3D bounding boxes during training, while these annotations could be expensive to obtain and only accessible in limited scenarios. Weakly supervised learning is a promising approach to reducing the annotation requirement, but existing weakly supervised object detectors are mostly for 2D detection rather than 3D. In this work, we propose VS3D, a framework for weakly supervised 3D obje…
This paper does not attempt to design a state-of-the-art method for visual recognition but investigates a more efficient way to make use of convolutions to encode spatial features. By comparing the design principles of the recent convolutional neural networks ConvNets) and Vision Transformers, we propose to simplify the self-attention by leveraging a convolutional modulation operation. We show that such a simple approach can better take advantage of the large kernels (>=7x7) nested in convolutional layers. We build a family of hierarchical ConvNets using the proposed convolutional modulation, …

Semi- and weakly-supervised learning have recently attracted considerable attention in the object detection literature since they can alleviate the cost of annotation needed to successfully train deep learning models. State-of-art approaches for semi-supervised learning rely on student-teacher models trained using a multi-stage process, and considerable data augmentation. Custom networks have been developed for the weakly-supervised setting, making it difficult to adapt to different detectors. In this paper, a weakly semi-supervised training method is introduced that reduces these training cha…

Weakly Supervised Object Detection (WSOD) is a task that detects objects in an image using a model trained only on image-level annotations. Current state-of-the-art models benefit from self-supervised instance-level supervision, but since weak supervision does not include count or location information, the most common ``argmax'' labeling method often ignores many instances of objects. To alleviate this issue, we propose a novel multiple instance labeling method called object discovery. We further introduce a new contrastive loss under weak supervision where no instance-level information is ava…
Self-supervised vision transformers can generate accurate localization maps of the objects in an image. However, since they decompose the scene into multiple maps containing various objects, and they do not rely on any explicit supervisory signal, they cannot distinguish between the object of interest from other objects, as required in weakly-supervised object localization (WSOL). To address this issue, we propose leveraging the multiple maps generated by the different transformer heads to acquire pseudo-labels for training a WSOL model. In particular, a new discriminative proposals sampling m…

In this paper, we investigate the problem of weakly supervised 3D vehicle detection. Conventional methods for 3D object detection need vast amounts of manually labelled 3D data as supervision signals. However, annotating large datasets requires huge human efforts, especially for 3D area. To tackle this problem, we propose frustum-aware geometric reasoning (FGR) to detect vehicles in point clouds without any 3D annotations. Our method consists of two stages: coarse 3D segmentation and 3D bounding box estimation. For the first stage, a context-aware adaptive region growing algorithm is designed …
Group activity recognition is the task of understanding the activity conducted by a group of people as a whole in a multi-person video. Existing models for this task are often impractical in that they demand ground-truth bounding box labels of actors even in testing or rely on off-the-shelf object detectors. Motivated by this, we propose a novel model for group activity recognition that depends neither on bounding box labels nor on object detector. Our model based on Transformer localizes and encodes partial contexts of a group activity by leveraging the attention mechanism, and represents a v…
Training object detection models usually requires instance-level annotations, such as the positions and labels of all objects present in each image. Such supervision is unfortunately not always available and, more often, only image-level information is provided, also known as weak supervision. Recent works have addressed this limitation by leveraging knowledge from a richly annotated domain. However, the scope of weak supervision supported by these approaches has been very restrictive, preventing them to use all available information. In this work, we propose ProbKT, a framework based on proba…

Weakly-supervised object detection (WSOD) has emerged as an inspiring recent topic to avoid expensive instance-level object annotations. However, the bounding boxes of most existing WSOD methods are mainly determined by precomputed proposals, thereby being limited in precise object localization. In this paper, we defend the problem setting for improving localization performance by leveraging the bounding box regression knowledge from a well-annotated auxiliary dataset. First, we use the well-annotated auxiliary dataset to explore a series of learnable bounding box adjusters (LBBAs) in a multi-…

Automatic pavement distress classification facilitates improving the efficiency of pavement maintenance and reducing the cost of labor and resources. A recently influential branch of this task divides the pavement image into patches and addresses these issues from the perspective of multi-instance learning. However, these methods neglect the correlation between patches and suffer from a low efficiency in the model optimization and inference. Meanwhile, Swin Transformer is able to address both of these issues with its unique strengths. Built upon Swin Transformer, we present a vision Transforme…

Modeling spatiotemporal brain dynamics from high-dimensional data, such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), is a formidable task in neuroscience. Existing approaches for fMRI analysis utilize hand-crafted features, but the process of feature extraction risks losing essential information in fMRI scans. To address this challenge, we present SwiFT (Swin 4D fMRI Transformer), a Swin Transformer architecture that can learn brain dynamics directly from fMRI volumes in a memory and computation-efficient manner. SwiFT achieves this by implementing a 4D window multi-head self-attention mec…
The canonical approach to video captioning dictates a caption generation model to learn from offline-extracted dense video features. These feature extractors usually operate on video frames sampled at a fixed frame rate and are often trained on image/video understanding tasks, without adaption to video captioning data. In this work, we present SwinBERT, an end-to-end transformer-based model for video captioning, which takes video frame patches directly as inputs, and outputs a natural language description. Instead of leveraging multiple 2D/3D feature extractors, our method adopts a video trans…

Trained using only image class label, deep weakly supervised methods allow image classification and ROI segmentation for interpretability. Despite their success on natural images, they face several challenges over histology data where ROI are visually similar to background making models vulnerable to high pixel-wise false positives. These methods lack mechanisms for modeling explicitly non-discriminative regions which raises false-positive rates. We propose novel regularization terms, which enable the model to seek both non-discriminative and discriminative regions, while discouraging unbalanc…

Action understanding has evolved into the era of fine granularity, as most human behaviors in real life have only minor differences. To detect these fine-grained actions accurately in a label-efficient way, we tackle the problem of weakly-supervised fine-grained temporal action detection in videos for the first time. Without the careful design to capture subtle differences between fine-grained actions, previous weakly-supervised models for general action detection cannot perform well in the fine-grained setting. We propose to model actions as the combinations of reusable atomic actions which a…
