We propose and demonstrate two methods for modal decomposition in multi-mode fibres. Linearly polarized modes propagating in a slightly multi-mode fibre are easily retrieved from intensity measurements at the fibre output surface. The first method is an improvement of the so-called spectrally and spatially imaging technique, which is limited to largemode-area optical fibers. The second method is a new, simpler and faster solution for the characterization of any kind of optical fibre, thus attractive in comparison to previously reported methods, which are cumbersome, time-consuming and/or limited to large-more-area fibres. Different kinds of multi-mode optical fibres are characterized. A large-modearea photonic-bandgap fibre, a photonic-crystal small-core non-linear fibre, and a standard index-stepped multi-mode fibre are characterized successfully.
We describe a semi-analytical approach for three-dimensional analysis of photonic crystal fibre devices. The approach relies on modal transmission-line theory. We offer two examples illustrating the utilization of this approach in photonic crystal fibres: the verification of the coupling action in a photonic crystal fibre coupler and the modal reflectivity in a photonic crystal fibre distributed Bragg reflector.
Optical fibre-based sensors measuring refractive index shift in bodily fluids and tissues are versatile and accurate probes of physiological processes. Here, we suggest a refractive index sensor based on a microstructured exposed-core fibre (ECF). By considering a high refractive index coating of the exposed core, our modelling demonstrates the splitting of the guided mode into a surface sensing mode and a mode that is isolated from the surface. With the isolated mode acting as a reference arm, this two-mode one-fibre solution provides for robust interferometric sensing with a sensitivity of u…
Envisioning more compact and cost accessible astronomical instruments is now possible with existing photonic technologies like specialty optical fibres, photonic lanterns and ultrafast laser inscribed chips. We present an original design of a multicore fibre (MCF) terminated with multimode photonic lantern ports. It is designed to act as a relay fibre with the coupling effciency of a multimode fibre, modal stability similar to a single-mode fibre and low loss in a wide range of wavelengths (380 nm to 860 nm). It provides phase and amplitude scrambling to achieve a stable near field and far fie…
This paper reports on the modal noise characterisation of a hybrid reformatter. The device consists of a multicore-fibre photonic lantern and an ultrafast laser-inscribed slit reformatter. It operates around 1550 nm and supports 92 modes. Photonic lanterns transform a multimode signal into an array of single-mode signals, and thus combine the high coupling efficiency of multimode fibres with the diffraction-limited performance of single-mode fibres. This paper presents experimental measurements of the device point spread function properties under different coupling conditions, and its throughp…
We proposed the method of the optical fiber modal decomposition of the radiation propagating in a multimode optical fiber with a step like refractive index profile. The field distribution at the output end of the fiber was used. The method is based on the field decomposition by non-orthogonal modes. The full complex expansion coefficients of the light field were calculated for theoretical data.
We investigate soliton self-compression and ultraviolet resonant dispersive wave emission in the higher-order modes of a gas-filled hollow capillary fibre. Our simple analytical scaling rules predict shorter required waveguides and different energy scales when moving from the fundamental to higher-order modes. Experimentally, we demonstrate soliton self-compression and ultraviolet dispersive wave emission in the double-lobe LP$_{11}$ mode of an argon-filled hollow capillary fibre, which we excite by coupling into the fibre at oblique incidence. We observe the generation of ultraviolet dispersi…
Orbital angular momentum (OAM) based structured light beams provide an additional degree of freedom for practical applications ranging from optical communication to laser-based material processing. Many techniques exist for generating such beams within laser sources and these primarily rely upon the use of specially designed optical components that limit laser power scaling and ready tunability of the topological charge and polarization of the output OAM beams. Here we show that some of these limitations can be overcome by employing a computer controlled reflective phase-only spatial light mod…
We propose and demonstrate a method for the adaptive wavefront correction of dynamic multimode fiber beams for the first time. The wavefront of incident beam is reconstructed in real-time based on the complete modal information, which obtained by using the modal decomposition of correlation filter method. For the proof of principle, both of the modal decomposition and the wavefront correction are implemented using the same computer-generated hologram, which encoded into a phase-only spatial light modulator. We demonstrate the wavefront correction of dynamic multimode beam at a rate of 5Hz and …
Online measurement of diameters and concentricities of optical fibre layers, and the coating layer in particular, is one of the challenges in fibre manufacturing. Currently available instruments can measure concentricity and diameter of layers offline, and are not suitable for precise monitoring or control of the manufacturing process in real time. In this work, we use two laser beams, positioned orthogonally to illuminate the fibre from two sides, and calculate deviations from the expected geometry by analysing the scattering pattern. To measure the diffraction pattern we use two 8K linear ar…
In this work, a numerical modal decomposition approach is applied to model the optical field of laser light after propagating through a highly multi-mode fiber. The algorithm for the decomposition is based on the reconstruction of measured intensity profiles along the laser beam caustic with consideration of intermodal degrees of coherence derived from spectral analysis. To enhance the accuracy of the model, different approaches and strategies are applied and discussed. The presented decomposition into a set of LP modes enables both the wave-optical simulation of radiation transport by highly …
We present a real-time method to determine the beam propagation ratio M2 of laser beams. The all-optical measurement of modal amplitudes yields M2 parameters conform to the ISO standard method. The experimental technique is simple and fast, which allows to investigate laser beams under conditions inaccessible to other methods.
We use phase-shifting digital holography to measure the amplitude and phase of twisted light. In our experiment, a spatial light modulator generates the studied vortex beams in addition to a co-propagating reference beam with a controllable relative phase. We show complex field measurements for single and superposition Laguerre Gaussian (LG) modes, demonstrate full modal decompositions into LG and orbital angular momentum (OAM) power spectral bases, provide error analysis and demonstrate high insensitivity to detector misalignment to show the robustness of the technique. This enables rapid det…
Recent studies have shown convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can be trained to perform modal decomposition using intensity images of optical fields. A fundamental limitation of these techniques is that the modal phases can not be uniquely calculated using a single intensity image. The knowledge of modal phases is crucial for wavefront sensing, alignment and mode matching applications. Heterodyne imaging techniques can provide images of the transverse complex amplitude & phase profile of laser beams at high resolutions and frame rates. In this work we train a CNN to perform modal decompositio…
The Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes make up a complete and orthonormal basis, which have been extensively used to describe optical fields. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, deep learning-based modal decomposition (MD) of HG beams. This method offers a fast, economical and robust way to acquire both the power content and phase information through a single-shot beam intensity image, which will be beneficial for the beam shaping, beam quality assessment, studies of resonator perturbations, and other further research on the HG beams.
Vector vortex beams are structured states of light that are non-separable in their polarisation and spatial mode, they are eigenmodes of free-space and many fibre systems, and have the capacity to be used as a modal basis for both classical and quantum communication. Here we outline recent progress in our understanding of these modes, from their creation to their characterization and detection. We then use these tools to study the propagation behaviour of such modes in free-space and optical fibre and show that modal cross-talk results in a decay of vector states into separable scalar modes, w…
Potential-based formulation with generalized Lorenz gauge can be used in the quantization of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous media. However, one often faces the redundancy of modes when finding eigenmodes from potential-based formulation. In free space, this can be explained by the connection to the well-known Helmholtz decomposition. In this work, we generalize the Helmholtz decomposition to its generalized form, echoing the use of generalized Lorenz gauge in inhomogeneous media. We formulate electromagnetics eigenvalue problems using vector potential formulation which is often used i…
Photonic technologies offer numerous advantages for astronomical instruments such as spectrographs and interferometers owing to their small footprints and diverse range of functionalities. Operating at the diffraction-limit, it is notoriously difficult to efficiently couple such devices directly with large telescopes. We demonstrate that with careful control of both the non-ideal pupil geometry of a telescope and residual wavefront errors, efficient coupling with single-mode devices can indeed be realised. A fibre injection was built within the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCE…
