In existing restoration-oriented Video Frame Interpolation (VFI) approaches, the motion estimation between neighboring frames plays a crucial role. However, the estimation accuracy in existing methods remains a challenge, primarily due to the inherent ambiguity in identifying corresponding areas in adjacent frames for interpolation. Therefore, enhancing accuracy by distinguishing different regions before motion estimation is of utmost importance. In this paper, we introduce a novel solution involving the utilization of open-world segmentation models, e.g., SAM2 (Segment Anything Model2) for frames, to derive Region-Distinguishable Priors (RDPs) in different frames. These RDPs are represented as spatial-varying Gaussian mixtures, distinguishing an arbitrary number of areas with a unified modality. RDPs can be integrated into existing motion-based VFI methods to enhance features for motion estimation, facilitated by our designed play-and-plug Hierarchical Region-aware Feature Fusion Module (HRFFM). HRFFM incorporates RDP into various hierarchical stages of VFI's encoder, using RDP-guided Feature Normalization (RDPFN) in a residual learning manner. With HRFFM and RDP, the features within VFI's encoder exhibit similar representations for matched regions in neighboring frames, thus improving the synthesis of intermediate frames. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HRFFM consistently enhances VFI performance across various scenes.

Almost all existing methods for image restoration are based on optimizing the mean squared error (MSE), even though it is known that the best estimate in terms of MSE may yield a highly atypical image due to the fact that there are many plausible restorations for a given noisy image. In this paper, we show how to combine explicit priors on patches of natural images in order to sample from the posterior probability of a full image given a degraded image. We prove that our algorithm generates correct samples from the distribution $p(x|y) \propto \exp(-E(x|y))$ where $E(x|y)$ is the cost function…

Conditional diffusion probabilistic models can model the distribution of natural images and can generate diverse and realistic samples based on given conditions. However, oftentimes their results can be unrealistic with observable color shifts and textures. We believe that this issue results from the divergence between the probabilistic distribution learned by the model and the distribution of natural images. The delicate conditions gradually enlarge the divergence during each sampling timestep. To address this issue, we introduce a new method that brings the predicted samples to the training …
This paper presents a scalable approximate Bayesian method for image restoration using total variation (TV) priors. In contrast to most optimization methods based on maximum a posteriori estimation, we use the expectation propagation (EP) framework to approximate minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimators and marginal (pixel-wise) variances, without resorting to Monte Carlo sampling. For the classical anisotropic TV-based prior, we also propose an iterative scheme to automatically adjust the regularization parameter via expectation-maximization (EM). Using Gaussian approximating densities wi…
Blind face restoration usually encounters with diverse scale face inputs, especially in the real world. However, most of the current works support specific scale faces, which limits its application ability in real-world scenarios. In this work, we propose a novel scale-aware blind face restoration framework, named FaceFormer, which formulates facial feature restoration as scale-aware transformation. The proposed Facial Feature Up-sampling (FFUP) module dynamically generates upsampling filters based on the original scale-factor priors, which facilitate our network to adapt to arbitrary face sca…

To improve the performance of blind face restoration, recent works mainly treat the two aspects, i.e., generic and specific restoration, separately. In particular, generic restoration attempts to restore the results through general facial structure prior, while on the one hand, cannot generalize to real-world degraded observations due to the limited capability of direct CNNs' mappings in learning blind restoration, and on the other hand, fails to exploit the identity-specific details. On the contrary, specific restoration aims to incorporate the identity features from the reference of the same…
This paper proposes using a Gaussian mixture model as a prior, for solving two image inverse problems, namely image deblurring and compressive imaging. We capitalize on the fact that variable splitting algorithms, like ADMM, are able to decouple the handling of the observation operator from that of the regularizer, and plug a state-of-the-art algorithm into the pure denoising step. Furthermore, we show that, when applied to a specific type of image, a Gaussian mixture model trained from an database of images of the same type is able to outperform current state-of-the-art methods.

We propose an out-of-distribution detection method that combines density and restoration-based approaches using Vector-Quantized Variational Auto-Encoders (VQ-VAEs). The VQ-VAE model learns to encode images in a categorical latent space. The prior distribution of latent codes is then modelled using an Auto-Regressive (AR) model. We found that the prior probability estimated by the AR model can be useful for unsupervised anomaly detection and enables the estimation of both sample and pixel-wise anomaly scores. The sample-wise score is defined as the negative log-likelihood of the latent variabl…

Texture is one of the most obvious characteristics in solar images and it is normally described by texture features. Because textures from solar images of the same wavelength are similar, we assume texture features of solar images are multi-fractals. Based on this assumption, we propose a pure data-based image restoration method: with several high resolution solar images as references, we use the Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Network to restore burred images of the same steady physical process, in the same wavelength obtained by the same telescope. We test our method with simulated and real obs…

We propose to leverage denoising autoencoder networks as priors to address image restoration problems. We build on the key observation that the output of an optimal denoising autoencoder is a local mean of the true data density, and the autoencoder error (the difference between the output and input of the trained autoencoder) is a mean shift vector. We use the magnitude of this mean shift vector, that is, the distance to the local mean, as the negative log likelihood of our natural image prior. For image restoration, we maximize the likelihood using gradient descent by backpropagating the auto…

Recently, there is a vast interest in developing methods which are independent of the training samples such as deep image prior, zero-shot learning, and internal learning. The methods above are based on the common goal of maximizing image features learning from a single image despite inherent technical diversity. In this work, we bridge the gap between the various unsupervised approaches above and propose a general framework for image restoration and image retargeting. We use contextual feature learning and internal learning to improvise the structure similarity between the source and the targ…
This paper presents a novel method for restoring digital videos via a Deep Plug-and-Play (PnP) approach. Under a Bayesian formalism, the method consists in using a deep convolutional denoising network in place of the proximal operator of the prior in an alternating optimization scheme. We distinguish ourselves from prior PnP work by directly applying that method to restore a digital video from a degraded video observation. This way, a network trained once for denoising can be repurposed for other video restoration tasks. Our experiments in video deblurring, super-resolution, and interpolation …
