We present a comprehensive study on the electronic and magnetic properties of the EuCl$_3$ monolayer using first-principles calculations. By taking into account the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the Hubbard effects, we elucidate the influence of these interactions on the structural properties of EuCl$_3$ monolayer. Comparing the lattice parameters obtained with the PBE+SOC and PBE+SOC+Hubbard effects reveals an increase in the lattice parameters when including the Hubbard effect. In the absence of the Hubbard interaction, the magnetic ground state of the EuCl$_3$ monolayer exhibits a preference for a ferromagnetic (FM) configuration as determined by the PBE+SOC calculations. However, the introduction of the Hubbard parameter leads to a shift in the magnetic ground state preference towards an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Néel state. Based on the calculated energy values, Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to determine the Néel temperature $(T_N)$. Our simulations yield a Néel temperature of \SI{390}{\kelvin} for the EuCl$_3$ monolayer, indicating the temperature at which the transition from a paramagnetic phase to an antiferromagnetic phase occurs. These results highlight the importance of incorporating the SOC and the Hubbard effect in accurately describing the electronic and magnetic properties of the EuCl$_3$ monolayer. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics underlying the behavior of this intriguing two-dimensional material and provide insights into its potential applications in spintronics and magnetic devices.

The novel electronic structures can induce unique physical properties in two-dimensional (2D) materials. In this work, we report isolated highly localized bands in $\mathrm{YbI_2}$ monolayer by the first-principle calculations within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC). It is found that $\mathrm{YbI_2}$ monolayer is an indirect-gap semiconductor using both GGA and GGA+SOC. The calculations reveal that Yb-$4f$ orbitals constitute isolated highly localized bands below the Fermi level at the absence of SOC, and the bands are split into the $j = 7/2$ and $j = 5/…

It is found that the gap decrease increases from S to Te in each cation group, when the SOC is opened. The spin-orbital splitting has the same trend with gap reducing. Calculated results show that SOC has noteworthy detrimental effect on p-type power factor, while has a negligible influence in n-type doping…
It is believed that nanostructuring is an effective way to achieve excellent thermoelectric performance. In the work, by combining the first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of bulk and monolayer BiTeBr including both the electron and phonon transports. The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is employed for the electron part, and GGA for the phonon part. Even though it has been known for decades that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is linked to the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the mechanism how it arises for specific systems is still subject of debate. We focused on finding markers of SOC in the density of states (DOS) and on employing them for understanding the source of magnetocrystalline anisotropy for the case of adatoms and monolayers. Fully relativistic ab-initio KKR-Green function calculations were performed for Fe, Co, and Ni adatoms and monolayers on Au(111) to investigate changes in the orbital-resolved DOS due to a rotation of magne…
Nontrivial band topology combined with magnetic ordering can produce quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI), which may lead to advances in device concepts. Here, through first-principles calculations, stable monolayer $\mathrm{Fe_2Br_2}$ is predicted as a room-temperature large-gap high-Chern-number QAHI by using generalized gradient approximation plus $U$ (GGA+$U$) approach. The large gap is due to correlation-enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect of Fe atoms, which equates with artificially increasing the strength of SOC without electronic correlation. Out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy i…
Biaxial strain dependence of electronic structures and thermoelectric properties of monolayer $\mathrm{MoS_2}$, including compressive and tensile strain, are investigated by using local-density approximation (LDA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Both LDA and LDA+SOC results show that $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ is a direct gap semiconductor with optimized lattice constants. It is found that SOC has important effect on power factor, which can enhance one in n-type doping, but has a obvious detrimental influence for p-type. Both compressive and tensile strain can induce direct-indirect gap transition, whic…
Nonsymmorphic space group symmetries can generate exotic band-crossings in topological metals and semimetals. Here, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we reveal rich band-crossing features in the existing layered compounds Ta$_3$SiTe$_6$ and Nb$_3$SiTe$_6$, enabled by nonsymmorphic symmetries. We show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), these three-dimensional (3D) bulk materials possess accidental Dirac loops and essential fourfold nodal lines. In the presence of SOC, there emerges an hourglass Dirac loop---a fourfold degenerate nodal loop, on which ea…

Experimentally synthesized $\mathrm{MoSi_2N_4}$ (\textcolor[rgb]{0.00,0.00,1.00}{Science 369, 670-674 (2020)}) is a piezoelectric semiconductor. Here, we systematically study the large biaxial (isotropic) strain effects (0.90 to 1.10) on electronic structures and transport coefficients of monolayer $\mathrm{MoSi_2N_4}$ by density functional theory (DFT). With $a/a_0$ from 0.90 to 1.10, the energy band gap firstly increases, and then decreases, which is due to transformation of conduction band minimum (CBM). Calculated results show that the $\mathrm{MoSi_2N_4}$ monolayer is mechanically stable …
Despite its extremely weak intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), graphene has been shown to acquire considerable SOC by proximity coupling with exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here we demonstrate strong induced Rashba SOC in graphene that is proximity coupled to a monolayer TMD film, MoS2 or WSe2, grown by chemical vapor deposition with drastically different Fermi level positions. Graphene/TMD heterostructures are fabricated with a pickup-transfer technique utilizing hexagonal boron nitride, which serves as a flat template to promote intimate contact and therefore a strong i…
Dirac point in two-dimensional (2D) materials has been a fascinating subject of research. Recently, it has been theoretically predicted that Dirac point may also be stabilized in 2D magnetic systems. Dirac points in two-dimensional (2D) materials have been a fascinating subject of research, with graphene as the most prominent example. However, the Dirac points in existing 2D materials, including graphene, are vulnerable against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we propose a new family of stable 2D materials, the HfGeTe-family monolayers, which represent the first example to host so-called spin-orbit Dirac points (SDPs) close to the Fermi level. These Dirac points are special in that they are formed only under significant SOC, …

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a topologically nontrivial phase, characterized by a non-zero Chern number defined in the bulk and chiral edge states in the boundary. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the presence of the QAH effect in 1T-YN$_2$ monolayer, which was recently predicted to be a Dirac half metal without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the inclusion of SOC opens up a large nontrivial band gap of nearly $0.1$ eV in the electronic band structure. This results in the nontrivial bulk topology which is confirmed by the calculation of Berry curvature,…
Monolayer NbSe2 is a metallic two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide material. Owing to the lattice structure and the strong atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) field, monolayer NbSe2 possesses Ising-type SOC which acts as effective Zeeman field, leading to the unconventional topological spin properties. In this paper, we numerically calculate spin-dependent optical conductivity of monolayer NbSe2 using Kubo formula based on an effective tight-binding model which includes $d_{z^2}$, $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$ orbitals of Nb atom. Numerical calculation indicates that the up- and down…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers MXY (M=Mo, W, X(not equal to)Y=S, Se, Te) are two-dimensional polar semiconductors. Setting WSeTe monolayer as an example and using density functional theory calculations, we investigate the manipulation of Rashba spin orbit coupling (SOC) in the MXY monolayer. It is found that the intrinsic out-of-plane electric field due to the mirror symmetry breaking induces the large Rashba spin splitting around the Gamma point, which, however, can be easily tuned by applying the in-plane biaxial strain. Through a relatively small strain (from -2% to 2%), a…

The electron and hole effective masses lowered two and ten times, respectively. The location of valleys in conduction and valence band for various strains are explored, and the corresponding effective masses are reported. A lower effective mass is obtained for both electron and hol…

Transition metal thriclorides, with $4d$ or $5d$ electrons, are materials at the forefront of recent studies about the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and strong Coulomb interactions. Within our first-principles calculations (DFT+$U$+SOC) we study the effects of graphene on the electronic and magnetic properties of the monolayers of $α$-RuCl$_3$ and OsCl$_3$. The effects of spin-orbit (SOC) and electron-phonon coupling on the collective excitation of doped monolayer Sb$_2$ are investigated using density functional and many-body perturbation theories. The spin-orbit coupling is exclusively important for the monolayer Sb$_2$ and it leads to the reconstruction of the electronic band structure. In particular, plasmon modes of monolayer Sb$_2$ are quite sensitive to the SOC and are characterized by very low damping rates owing to small electron-phonon scatterings. Our results show plasmons in antimonene are significantly less damped compared to monolaye…

This kind of materials belong to topological semimetals (TMs) with abundant nodal lines and nodes. Considering their similar properties, we focus on the analysis of Ta3SnTe6 and Ta3SiSe6. The present of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to the transition from type-I nodal lines to Dirac points as well as the disappear of type-II Dirac points. The three-dimensional (3D) band diagrams reproduce vividly the characteristics of nod…
We use the modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential (mBJ) with the spin-orbit coupling effect (SOC) to study effects of biaxial strain and local constant potential on electronic structure of monolayer SnSe. Our results show the fundamental band gap size can be tuned via biaxial strain. Compressive strain (tensile strain) can narrow (enlarge) band gap, and compressive strain causes the transition from quasi-direct to indirect band gap. Moreover, considering that any tuning of electronic structure is realized by changing the periodic potential distribution in the crystalline, we directly add co…
The influence of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the magnetic dipole term $T_α$ is studied across a range of systems in order to check whether the $T_α$ term can be eliminated from analysis of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra done via the spin moment sum rule. Fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green function calculations for Co monolayers and adatoms on Cu, Pd, Ag, Pt, and Au (111) surfaces were performed to verify whether the sum over magnetic dipole terms $T_{x}+T_{y}+T_{z}$ is zero and whether the angular dependence of the \ta\ term goes as $3\cos^{2}θ-1$. It follows…
Theoretical and experimental studies present that metal halogens in MX$_3$ forms can show very interesting electronic and magnetic properties in their bulk and monolayer phases. Many MX$_3$ materials have layered structures in their bulk phases, while RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$ have one-dimensional chains in plane. In this paper, we show that these metal halogens can also form two-dimensional layered structures in the bulk phase similar to other metal halogens, and cleavage energy values confirm that the monolayers of RuX$_3$ can be possible to be synthesised. We also find that monolayers of RuX$_3$…

Valleytronic materials, characterized by local extrema (valley) in their bands, and topological insulators have separately attracted great interest recently. However, the interplay between valleytronic and topological properties in one single system, likely to enable important unexplored phenomena and applications, has been largely overlooked so far. Here, by combining a tight-binding model with first-principles calculations, we find the large-band-gap quantum spin Hall effects (QSHEs) and valley Hall effects (VHEs) appear simultaneously in the Bi monolayers decorated with halogen elements, de…

Here, we predict monolayer Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ can be a QSH insulator based on first-principles calculations. The interlayer binding energy in the layered van der Waals compound Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ is 19.6 meV/A$^2$; thus, its monolayer/thin-film structures could be readily obtained by exfoliation. Spin orbit coupling (SOC) is the key to realizing time-reversal invariant topological phases of matter. Famously, SOC was predicted by Kane and Mele to stabilize a quantum spin Hall insulator; however, the weak intrinsic SOC in monolayer graphene has precluded experimental observation. Here, we exploit a layer-selective proximity effect---achieved via van der Waals contact to a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide--to engineer Kane-Mele SOC in ultra-clean \textit{bilayer} graphene. Using high-resolution capacitance measurements to probe the bulk electronic compressibility, we find th…
