Emotion recognition is a topic of significant interest in assistive robotics due to the need to equip robots with the ability to comprehend human behavior, facilitating their effective interaction in our society. Consequently, efficient and dependable emotion recognition systems supporting optimal human-machine communication are required. Multi-modality (including speech, audio, text, images, and videos) is typically exploited in emotion recognition tasks. Much relevant research is based on merging multiple data modalities and training deep learning models utilizing low-level data representations. However, most existing emotion databases are not large (or complex) enough to allow machine learning approaches to learn detailed representations. This paper explores modalityspecific pre-trained transformer frameworks for self-supervised learning of speech and text representations for data-efficient emotion recognition while achieving state-of-the-art performance in recognizing emotions. This model applies feature-level fusion using nonverbal cue data points from motion capture to provide multimodal speech emotion recognition. The model was trained using the publicly available IEMOCAP dataset, achieving an overall accuracy of 77.58% for four emotions, outperforming state-of-the-art approaches

Despite advances in deep learning, current state-of-the-art speech emotion recognition (SER) systems still have poor performance due to a lack of speech emotion datasets. This paper proposes augmenting SER systems with synthetic emotional speech generated by an end-to-end text-to-speech (TTS) system based on an extended Tacotron architecture. The proposed TTS system includes encoders for speaker and emotion embeddings, a sequence-to-sequence text generator for creating Mel-spectrograms, and a WaveRNN to generate audio from the Mel-spectrograms. Extensive experiments show that the quality of th…

We investigate the effect and usefulness of spontaneity (i.e. whether a given speech is spontaneous or not) in speech in the context of emotion recognition. We hypothesize that emotional content in speech is interrelated with its spontaneity, and use spontaneity classification as an auxiliary task to the problem of emotion recognition. We propose two supervised learning settings that utilize spontaneity to improve speech emotion recognition: a hierarchical model that performs spontaneity detection before performing emotion recognition, and a multitask learning model that jointly learns to reco…
Speech emotion recognition is a challenging task because the emotion expression is complex, multimodal and fine-grained. In this paper, we propose a novel multimodal deep learning approach to perform fine-grained emotion recognition from real-life speeches. We design a temporal alignment mean-max pooling mechanism to capture the subtle and fine-grained emotions implied in every utterance. In addition, we propose a cross modality excitement module to conduct sample-specific adjustment on cross modality embeddings and adaptively recalibrate the corresponding values by its aligned latent features…

In this paper, an end-to-end neural embedding system based on triplet loss and residual learning has been proposed for speech emotion recognition. The proposed system learns the embeddings from the emotional information of the speech utterances. The learned embeddings are used to recognize the emotions portrayed by given speech samples of various lengths. The proposed system implements Residual Neural Network architecture. It is trained using softmax pre-training and triplet loss function. The weights between the fully connected and embedding layers of the trained network are used to calculate…

The high quality of naturalistic emotional speech data is the basis of this research. The following techniques are used for inducing practical emotional speech: cognitive task, computer game, noise stimulation, sleep deprivation and movie clips. A practical speech emotion recognition system is studied based on Gaussian mixture model. A two-class classifier set is adopted for performance improvement under the small …
Current approaches to speech emotion recognition focus on speech features that can capture the emotional content of a speech signal. Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) are one of the most commonly used representations for audio speech recognition and classification. This paper proposes Gammatone Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (GFCCs) as a potentially better representation of speech signals for emotion recognition. The effectiveness of MFCC and GFCC representations are compared and evaluated over emotion and intensity classification tasks with fully connected and recurrent neural netw…
The way that humans encode their emotion into speech signals is complex. For instance, an angry man may increase his pitch and speaking rate, and use impolite words. In this paper, we present a preliminary study on various emotional factors and investigate how each of them impacts modern emotion recognition systems. The key tool of our study is the SpeechFlow model presented recently, by which we are able to decompose speech signals into separate information factors (content, pitch, rhythm). Based on this decomposition, we carefully studied the performance of each information component and the…

Designing reliable Speech Emotion Recognition systems is a complex task that inevitably requires sufficient data for training purposes. Such extensive datasets are currently available in only a few languages, including English, German, and Italian. In this paper, we present SEMOUR, the first scripted database of emotion-tagged speech in the Urdu language, to design an Urdu Speech Recognition System. Our gender-balanced dataset contains 15,040 unique instances recorded by eight professional actors eliciting a syntactically complex script. The dataset is phonetically balanced, and reliably exhib…
Emotions lie on a broad continuum and treating emotions as a discrete number of classes limits the ability of a model to capture the nuances in the continuum. The challenge is how to describe the nuances of emotions and how to enable a model to learn the descriptions. In this work, we devise a method to automatically create a description (or prompt) for a given audio by computing acoustic properties, such as pitch, loudness, speech rate, and articulation rate. We pair a prompt with its corresponding audio using 5 different emotion datasets. We trained a neural network model using these audio-t…

A speech emotion recognition algorithm based on multi-feature and Multi-lingual fusion is proposed in order to resolve low recognition accuracy caused by lack of large speech dataset and low robustness of acoustic features in the recognition of speech emotion. First, handcrafted and deep automatic features are extracted from existing data in Chinese and English speech emotions. Then, the various features are fused respectively. Finally, the fused features of different languages are fused again and trained in a classification model. Distinguishing the fused features with the unfused ones, the r…

Speech emotion recognition is a challenging problem because human convey emotions in subtle and complex ways. For emotion recognition on human speech, one can either extract emotion related features from audio signals or employ speech recognition techniques to generate text from speech and then apply natural language processing to analyze the sentiment. Further, emotion recognition will be beneficial from using audio-textual multimodal information, it is not trivial to build a system to learn from multimodality. One can build models for two input sources separately and combine them in a decisi…

Speech emotion recognition (SER) has many challenges, but one of the main challenges is that each framework does not have a unified standard. In this paper, we propose SpeechEQ, a framework for unifying SER tasks based on a multi-scale unified metric. This metric can be trained by Multitask Learning (MTL), which includes two emotion recognition tasks of Emotion States Category (EIS) and Emotion Intensity Scale (EIS), and two auxiliary tasks of phoneme recognition and gender recognition. For this framework, we build a Mandarin SER dataset - SpeechEQ Dataset (SEQD). We conducted experiments on t…

The majority of existing speech emotion recognition models are trained and evaluated on a single corpus and a single language setting. These systems do not perform as well when applied in a cross-corpus and cross-language scenario. This paper presents results for speech emotion recognition for 4 languages in both single corpus and cross corpus setting. Additionally, since multi-task learning (MTL) with gender, naturalness and arousal as auxiliary tasks has shown to enhance the generalisation capabilities of the emotion models, this paper introduces language ID as another auxiliary task in MTL …

This paper proposes a speech emotion recognition method based on speech features and speech transcriptions (text). Speech features such as Spectrogram and Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) help retain emotion-related low-level characteristics in speech whereas text helps capture semantic meaning, both of which help in different aspects of emotion detection. We experimented with several Deep Neural Network (DNN) architectures, which take in different combinations of speech features and text as inputs. The proposed network architectures achieve higher accuracies when compared to state-o…
Emotion recognition from speech is one of the key steps towards emotional intelligence in advanced human-machine interaction. Identifying emotions in human speech requires learning features that are robust and discriminative across diverse domains that differ in terms of language, spontaneity of speech, recording conditions, and types of emotions. This corresponds to a learning scenario in which the joint distributions of features and labels may change substantially across domains. In this paper, we propose a deep architecture that jointly exploits a convolutional network for extracting domain…

Robust speech emotion recognition relies on the quality of the speech features. We present speech features enhancement strategy that improves speech emotion recognition. We used the INTERSPEECH 2010 challenge feature-set. We identified subsets from the features set and applied Principle Component Analysis to the subsets. Finally, the features are fused horizontally. The resulting feature set is analyzed using t-distributed neighbour embeddings (t-SNE) before the application of features for emotion recognition. The method is compared with the state-of-the-art methods used in the literature. The…

Learning the latent representation of data in unsupervised fashion is a very interesting process that provides relevant features for enhancing the performance of a classifier. For speech emotion recognition tasks, generating effective features is crucial. Currently, handcrafted features are mostly used for speech emotion recognition, however, features learned automatically using deep learning have shown strong success in many problems, especially in image processing. In particular, deep generative models such as Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) have gained enormous success for generating featur…

Emotion represents an essential aspect of human speech that is manifested in speech prosody. Speech, visual, and textual cues are complementary in human communication. In this paper, we study a hybrid fusion method, referred to as multi-modal attention network (MMAN) to make use of visual and textual cues in speech emotion recognition. We propose a novel multi-modal attention mechanism, cLSTM-MMA, which facilitates the attention across three modalities and selectively fuse the information. cLSTM-MMA is fused with other uni-modal sub-networks in the late fusion. The experiments show that speech…

The capability of generating speech with specific type of emotion is desired for many applications of human-computer interaction. Cross-speaker emotion transfer is a common approach to generating emotional speech when speech with emotion labels from target speakers is not available for model training. This paper presents a novel cross-speaker emotion transfer system, named iEmoTTS. The system is composed of an emotion encoder, a prosody predictor, and a timbre encoder. The emotion encoder extracts the identity of emotion type as well as the respective emotion intensity from the mel-spectrogram…
Although current neural text-to-speech (TTS) models are able to generate high-quality speech, intensity controllable emotional TTS is still a challenging task. Most existing methods need external optimizations for intensity calculation, leading to suboptimal results or degraded quality. In this paper, we propose EmoDiff, a diffusion-based TTS model where emotion intensity can be manipulated by a proposed soft-label guidance technique derived from classifier guidance. Specifically, instead of being guided with a one-hot vector for the specified emotion, EmoDiff is guided with a soft label where…

Despite the enormous interest in emotion classification from speech, the impact of noise on emotion classification is not well understood. This is important because, due to the tremendous advancement of the smartphone technology, it can be a powerful medium for speech emotion recognition in the outside laboratory natural environment, which is likely to incorporate background noise in the speech. We capitalize on the current breakthrough of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and seek to investigate its performance for emotion classification from noisy speech. We particularly focus on the recently p…
Even though speech-emotion recognition (SER) has been receiving much attention as research topic, there are still some disputes about which vocal features can identify certain emotion. Emotion expression is also known to be differed according to the cultural backgrounds that make it important to study SER specific to the culture where the language belongs to. Furthermore, only a few studies addresses the SER in Indonesian which what this study attempts to explore. In this study, we extract simple features from 3420 voice data gathered from 38 participants. The features are compared by means of…

Recently, increasing attention has been directed to the study of the speech emotion recognition, in which global acoustic features of an utterance are mostly used to eliminate the content differences. However, the expression of speech emotion is a dynamic process, which is reflected through dynamic durations, energies, and some other prosodic information when one speaks. In this paper, a novel local dynamic pitch probability distribution feature, which is obtained by drawing the histogram, is proposed to improve the accuracy of speech emotion recognition. Compared with most of the previous wor…
