Image quality assessment (IQA) plays a critical role in optimizing radiation dose and developing novel medical imaging techniques in computed tomography (CT). Traditional IQA methods relying on hand-crafted features have limitations in summarizing the subjective perceptual experience of image quality. Recent deep learning-based approaches have demonstrated strong modeling capabilities and potential for medical IQA, but challenges remain regarding model generalization and perceptual accuracy. In this work, we propose a multi-scale distributions regression approach to predict quality scores by constraining the output distribution, thereby improving model generalization. Furthermore, we design a dual-branch alignment network to enhance feature extraction capabilities. Additionally, semi-supervised learning is introduced by utilizing pseudo-labels for unlabeled data to guide model training. Extensive qualitative experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method for advancing the state-of-the-art in deep learning-based medical IQA. Image quality assessment (IQA) is a fundamental metric for image processing tasks (e.g., compression). With full-reference IQAs, traditional IQAs, such as PSNR and SSIM, have been used. Recently, IQAs based on deep neural networks (deep IQAs), such as LPIPS and DISTS, have also been used. It is known that image scaling is inconsistent among deep IQAs, as some perform down-scaling as pre-processing, whereas others instead use the original image size. In this paper, we show that the image scale is an influential factor that affects deep IQA performance. We comprehensively evaluate four deep IQAs…
Image quality assessment (IQA) is traditionally classified into full-reference (FR) IQA and no-reference (NR) IQA according to whether the original image is required. Although NR-IQA is widely used in practical applications, room for improvement still remains because of the lack of the reference image. Inspired by the fact that in many applications, such as parameter selection, a series of distorted images are available, the authors propose a novel comparison-based image quality assessment (C-IQA) method. The new comparison-based framework parallels FR-IQA by requiring two input images, and re…

Image quality is important, and can affect overall performance in image processing and computer vision as well as for numerous other reasons. Image quality assessment (IQA) is consequently a vital task in different applications from aerial photography interpretation to object detection to medical image analysis. In previous research, the BRISQUE algorithm and the PSNR algorithm were evaluated with high resolution (atleast 512x384 pixels), but relatively small image sets (no more than 4,744 images). However, scientists have not evaluated IQA algorithms on low resolution (no more than 32x32 pixe…
In practical media distribution systems, visual content usually undergoes multiple stages of quality degradation along the delivery chain, but the pristine source content is rarely available at most quality monitoring points along the chain to serve as a reference for quality assessment. As a result, full-reference (FR) and reduced-reference (RR) image quality assessment (IQA) methods are generally infeasible. Although no-reference (NR) methods are readily applicable, their performance is often not reliable. On the other hand, intermediate references of degraded quality are often available, e.…

Image quality assessment(IQA) is of increasing importance for image-based applications. Its purpose is to establish a model that can replace humans for accurately evaluating image quality. According to whether the reference image is complete and available, image quality evaluation can be divided into three categories: full-reference(FR), reduced-reference(RR), and non-reference(NR) image quality assessment. Due to the vigorous development of deep learning and the widespread attention of researchers, several non-reference image quality assessment methods based on deep learning have been propose…
In this paper, we propose a novel virtual reality image quality assessment (VR IQA) with adversarial learning for omnidirectional images. To take into account the characteristics of the omnidirectional image, we devise deep networks including novel quality score predictor and human perception guider. The proposed quality score predictor automatically predicts the quality score of distorted image using the latent spatial and position feature. The proposed human perception guider criticizes the predicted quality score of the predictor with the human perceptual score using adversarial learning. F…
This paper reports on the NTIRE 2022 challenge on perceptual image quality assessment (IQA), held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement workshop (NTIRE) workshop at CVPR 2022. This challenge is held to address the emerging challenge of IQA by perceptual image processing algorithms. The output images of these algorithms have completely different characteristics from traditional distortions and are included in the PIPAL dataset used in this challenge. This challenge is divided into two tracks, a full-reference IQA track similar to the previous NTIRE IQA challeng…

Recently, increasing interest has been drawn in exploiting deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) for no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA). Despite of the notable success achieved, there is a broad consensus that training DCNNs heavily relies on massive annotated data. Unfortunately, IQA is a typical small sample problem. Therefore, most of the existing DCNN-based IQA metrics operate based on pre-trained networks. However, these pre-trained networks are not designed for IQA task, leading to generalization problem when evaluating different types of distortions. With this motivatio…
Significant progress has been made in the past decade for full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA). However, new large scale image quality databases have been released for evaluating image quality assessment algorithms. In this study, our goal is to give a comprehensive evaluation of state-of-the-art FR-IQA metrics using the recently published KADID-10k database which is largest available one at the moment. Our evaluation results and the associated discussions is very helpful to obtain a clear understanding about the status of state-of-the-art FR-IQA metrics.
Multi-level deep-features have been driving state-of-the-art methods for aesthetics and image quality assessment (IQA). However, most IQA benchmarks are comprised of artificially distorted images, for which features derived from ImageNet under-perform. We propose a new IQA dataset and a weakly supervised feature learning approach to train features more suitable for IQA of artificially distorted images. The dataset, KADIS-700k, is far more extensive than similar works, consisting of 140,000 pristine images, 25 distortions types, totaling 700k distorted versions. Our weakly supervised feature le…

Image quality assessment (IQA) is the key factor for the fast development of image restoration (IR) algorithms. The most recent IR methods based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have achieved significant improvement in visual performance, but also presented great challenges for quantitative evaluation. Notably, we observe an increasing inconsistency between perceptual quality and the evaluation results. Then we raise two questions: (1) Can existing IQA methods objectively evaluate recent IR algorithms? (2) When focus on beating current benchmarks, are we getting better IR algorithms? …

Human fingerprints are detailed and nearly unique markers of human identity. Such a unique and stable fingerprint is also left on each acquired image. It can reveal how an image was degraded during the image acquisition procedure and thus is closely related to the quality of an image. In this work, we propose a new no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) approach called domain-aware IQA (DA-IQA), which for the first time introduces the concept of domain fingerprint to the NR-IQA field. The domain fingerprint of an image is learned from image collections of different degradations and the…
Image quality assessment that aims at estimating the subject quality of images, builds models to evaluate the perceptual quality of the image in different applications. Based on the fact that the human visual system (HVS) is highly sensitive to structural information, the edge information extraction is widely applied in different IQA metrics. According to previous studies, the image gradient magnitude (GM) and the Laplacian of Gaussian (LOG) operator are two efficient structural features in IQA tasks. However, most of the IQA metrics achieve good performance only when the distorted image is to…

The widespread image applications have greatly promoted the vision-based tasks, in which the Image Quality Assessment (IQA) technique has become an increasingly significant issue. For user enjoyment in multimedia systems, the IQA exploits image fidelity and aesthetics to characterize user experience; while for other tasks such as popular object recognition, there exists a low correlation between utilities and perceptions. In such cases, the fidelity-based and aesthetics-based IQA methods cannot be directly applied. To address this issue, this paper proposes a utility-oriented IQA in object rec…

Scale-invariance is an open problem in many computer vision subfields. For example, object labels should remain constant across scales, yet model predictions diverge in many cases. This problem gets harder for tasks where the ground-truth labels change with the presentation scale. In image quality assessment (IQA), downsampling attenuates impairments, e.g., blurs or compression artifacts, which can positively affect the impression evoked in subjective studies. To accurately predict perceptual image quality, cross-resolution IQA methods must therefore account for resolution-dependent errors ind…

In this paper, we propose a simple and yet effective general-purpose no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) framework based on multi-task learning. Deep learning based image quality assessment (IQA) models usually learn to predict image quality from a single dataset, leading the model to overfit specific scenes. To account for this, mixed datasets training can be an effective way to enhance the generalization capability of the model. However, it is nontrivial to combine different IQA datasets, as their quality evaluation criteria, score ranges, view conditions, as well as subjects are usually not shared during the image quality annotation. In this paper, instead of aligning the annotations, we propose a monotonic neural network for IQA mo…
One major problem of objective Image Quality Assessment (IQA) methods is the lack of linearity of their quality estimates with respect to scores expressed by human subjects. For this reason, usually IQA metrics undergo a calibration process based on subjective quality examples. However, example-based training makes generalization problematic, hampering result comparison across different applications and operative conditions. In this paper, new Full Reference (FR) techniques, providing estimates linearly correlated with human scores without using calibration are introduced. To reach this object…
In this paper, we propose an image quality transformer (IQT) that successfully applies a transformer architecture to a perceptual full-reference image quality assessment (IQA) task. Perceptual representation becomes more important in image quality assessment. In this context, we extract the perceptual feature representations from each of input images using a convolutional neural network (CNN) backbone. The extracted feature maps are fed into the transformer encoder and decoder in order to compare a reference and distorted images. Following an approach of the transformer-based vision models, we…

The state-of-the-art pooling strategies for perceptual image quality assessment (IQA) are based on the mean and the weighted mean. They are robust pooling strategies which usually provide a moderate to high performance for different IQAs. Recently, standard deviation (SD) pooling was also proposed. Although, this deviation pooling provides a very high performance for a few IQAs, its performance is lower than mean poolings for many other IQAs. In this paper, we propose to use the mean absolute deviation (MAD) and show that it is a more robust and accurate pooling strategy for a wider range of I…

Understanding semantic information is an essential step in knowing what is being learned in both full-reference (FR) and no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) methods. However, especially for many severely distorted images, even if there is an undistorted image as a reference (FR-IQA), it is difficult to perceive the lost semantic and texture information of distorted images directly. In this paper, we propose a Mask Reference IQA (MR-IQA) method that masks specific patches of a distorted image and supplements missing patches with the reference image patches. In this way, our model o…
