Wind Roche-Lobe Overflow (WRLOF) is a mass-transfer mechanism proposed by Mohamed and Podsiadlowski (2007) for stellar binaries wherein the wind acceleration zone of the donor star exceeds its Roche lobe radius, allowing stellar wind material to be transferred to the accretor at enhanced rates. WRLOF may explain characteristics observed in blue lurkers and blue stragglers. While WRLOF has been implemented in rapid population synthesis codes, it has yet to be explored thoroughly in detailed binary models such as MESA (a 1D stellar evolution code), and over a wide range of initial binary configurations. We incorporate WRLOF accretion in MESA to investigate wide low-mass binaries at solar metallicity. We perform a parameter study over the initial orbital period and stellar mass. In most of the models where we consider angular momentum transfer during accretion, the accretor is spun up to the critical (or break-up) rotation rate. Then we assume the star develops a boosted wind to efficiently reduce the angular momentum so that it could maintain a sub-critical rotation. Balanced by boosted wind loss, the accretor only gains $\sim 2\%$ of its total mass, but can maintain a near-critical rotation rate during WRLOF. Notably, the mass-transfer efficiency is significantly smaller than in previous studies in which the rotation of the accretor is ignored. We compare our results to observational data of blue lurkers in M67 and find that the WRLOF mechanism can qualitatively explain the origin of their rapid rotation, their location on the HR diagram and their orbital periods.
We have simulated a common envelope interaction of a 0.88-M$_{\odot}$, 90-R$_{\odot}$, red giant branch star and a 0.6-M$_{\odot}$, compact companion with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, Phantom, from the beginning of the Roche lobe overflow phase to the beginning of the self-regulated inspiral, using three different resolutions. The duration of the Roche lobe overflow phase is resolution dependent and would lengthen with increased resolution beyond the $\sim$20 years observed, while the inspiral phase and the post-common envelope separation are largely independent of resolution. Mas…
One of the important issues regarding the final evolution of stars is the impact of binarity. A rich zoo of peculiar, evolved objects are born from the interaction between the loosely bound envelope of a giant, and the gravitational pull of a companion. However, binary interactions are not understood from first principles, and the theoretical models are subject to many assumptions. It is currently agreed upon that hot subdwarf stars can only be formed through binary interaction, either through common envelope ejection or stable Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) near the tip of the red giant branch (R…
Many giant exoplanets are found near their Roche limit and in mildly eccentric orbits. In this study we examine the fate of such planets through Roche-lobe overflow as a function of the physical properties of the binary components, including the eccentricity and the asynchronicity of the rotating planet. We use a direct three-body integrator to compute the trajectories of the lost mass in the ballistic limit and investigate the possible outcomes. We find three different outcomes for the mass transferred through the Lagrangian point $L_{1}$: (i) self-accretion by the planet, (ii) direct impact …
We find that applying a theoretical wind mass-loss rate from Monte Carlo radiative transfer models for hydrogen-deficient stars results in significantly more leftover hydrogen following stable mass transfer through Roche-lobe overflow than when we use an extrapolation of an empirical fit for Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, for which a negligible amount of hydrogen remains in a large set of binary stellar evolution computations. These findings have implications for modelling progenitors of Type Ib and Type IIb supernovae. Most importantly, our study stresses the sensitivity of the stellar evolution …
Symbiotic stars are interacting binaries with one of the longest orbital periods. Since they can contain a massive white dwarf with a high accretion rate they are considered a possible type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) progenitors. Among symbiotic binaries there are systems containing a Mira donor, which can have orbital periods of a few tens of years and more. This subclass of symbiotic stars due to their very large separation usually was not considered promising SNe Ia progenitors. We analysed evolution of one of the well studied symbiotic star with a Mira donor, V407 Cyg. We showed that the stand…
In compact stellar triple systems, an evolved tertiary star can overflow its Roche lobe around the inner binary. Subsequently, the tertiary star can transfer mass to the inner binary in a stable manner, or Roche lobe overflow (RLOF) can be unstable and lead to common-envelope (CE) evolution. In the latter case, the inner binary enters the extended envelope of the tertiary star and spirals in towards the donor's core, potentially leading to mergers or ejections. Although studied in detail for individual systems, a comprehensive statistical view on the various outcomes of triple RLOF is lacking.…
Common-envelope (CE) evolution is an outstanding open problem in stellar evolution, critical to the formation of compact binaries including gravitational-wave sources. In the ``classical'' isolated binary evolution scenario for double compact objects, the CE is usually the second mass transfer phase. Thus, the donor star of the CE is the product of a previous binary interaction, often stable Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF). Because of the accretion of mass during the first RLOF, the main-sequence core of the accretor star grows and is ``rejuvenated''. This modifies the core-envelope boundary region…

Some close-in gaseous exoplanets are nearly in Roche-lobe contact, and previous studies show tidal decay can drive hot Jupiters into contact during the main sequence of their host stars. Improving upon a previous model, we present a revised model for mass transfer in a semi-detached binary system that incorporates an extended atmosphere around the donor and allows for an arbitrary mass ratio. We apply this new formalism to hypothetical, confirmed, and candidate planetary systems to estimate mass loss rates and compare with models of evaporative mass loss. Overflow may be significant for hot Ne…

We investigate the effects of mass transfer and gravitational wave (GW) radiation on the orbital evolution of contact neutron-star-white-dwarf (NS-WD) binaries, and the detectability of these binaries by space GW detectors (e.g., Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, LISA; Taiji; Tianqin). A NS-WD binary becomes contact when the WD component fills its Roche lobe, at which the GW frequency ranges from ~0.0023 to 0.72 Hz for WD with masses ~0.05-1.4 Msun. We find that some high-mass NS-WD binaries may undergo direct coalescence after unstable mass transfer. However, the majority of NS-WD binaries …

WOCS 4540 is the longest orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}=3030$ days) blue straggler (BSS) - white dwarf (WD) pair in the old open cluster NGC 188 . It also contains one of the most luminous BSS in the cluster. Prior \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} COS spectroscopy measured a WD mass of 0.53 $M_{\odot}$, indicative of a carbon-oxygen WD and suggesting previous mass transfer from an asymptotic branch giant (AGB). Detailed modeling of the system evolution, including red giant branch phase wind mass transfer, AGB wind Roche-lobe overflow and regular Roche-lobe overflow, is done with Modules for Exper…
HD149404 is an evolved non-eclipsing O-star binary that has previously undergone a Roche lobe overflow interaction. Understanding some key properties of the system requires a determination of the orbital inclination and of the dimensions of the components. The BRITE-Heweliusz satellite was used to collect photometric data of HD149404. Additional photometry was retrieved from the SMEI archive. These data were analysed using a suite of period search tools. The orbital part of the lightcurve was modelled with the nightfall binary star code. The Gaia-DR2 parallax of HD149404 was used to provide ad…
The origin of chemically peculiar stars and non-zero eccentricity in evolved close binaries have been long-standing problems in binary stellar evolution. Answers to these questions may trace back to an intense mass transfer during AGB binary phase. In this work, we use AstroBEAR to solve the 3D radiation-hydrodynamic equations and calculate the mass transfer rate in asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) binaries that undergo the wind-Roche-lobe-overflow or Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion. MESA produces the density and temperature of the boundary condition of the AGB star. To improve the resoluti…
We study the process of runaway, unstable Roche lobe overflow in coalescing binary systems and its dependence on the properties of the binary involved. We create three-dimensional hydrodynamic models of binary coalescences, and follow them through a phase of increasing Roche lobe overflow until the accretor is engulfed by the donor at the onset of a common envelope phase. In these models, we vary binary properties of mass ratio, donor structure and spin, and equation of state through the gas adiabatic index. We compare the numerical results to semi-analytic models of binary orbit evolution bas…
The observed late-type WC Wolf-Rayet stars (WC7-9) with low luminosity below $\rm \log L/L_{\odot} < 5.4$ in the HR diagram cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by the evolutionary track of single stars. The mass transfer due to Roche lobe overflow drastically modifies the internal structure and surface compositions of two components. Therefore, binaries provide a very promising evolutionary channel to produce these WC stars.
Despite 50 years of extensive binary research we have to conclude that the Roche lobe overflow/mass transfer process that governs close binary evolution is still poorly understood. It is the scope of the present paper to lift a tip of the veil by studying the spin-up and spin-down processes of the O-type components of WR+O binaries. We critically analyze the available observational data of rotation speeds of the O-type components in WR+O binaries. By combining a binary evolutionary code and a formalism that describes the effects of tides in massive stars with an envelope in radiative equilibri…
Binary systems undergoing unstable Roche Lobe overflow spill gas into their circumbinary environment as their orbits decay toward coalescence. In this paper, we use a suite of hydrodynamic models of coalescing binaries involving an extended donor and a more compact accretor. We focus on the period of unstable Roche Lobe overflow that ends as the accretor plunges within the envelope of the donor at the onset of a common envelope phase. During this stage, mass is removed from the donor and flung into the circumbinary environment. Across a wide range of binary mass ratios, we find that the mass e…
Massive star evolution in close binaries:conditions for homogeneous chemical evolution
We present spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary X Per obtained during the period 1999 - 2018. Using new and published data, we found that during "disc-rise" the expansion velocity of the circumstellar disc is 0.4 - 0.7 km/s. Our results suggest that the disc radius in recent decades show evidence of resonant truncation of the disc by resonances 10:1, 3:1, and 2:1, while the maximum disc size is larger than the Roche lobe of the primary and smaller than the closest approach of the neutron star. We find correlation between equivalent width of H-alpha emission line ($Wα$) and the X-r…
We propose a formation mechanism for twin blue stragglers (BSs) in compact binaries that involves mass transfer from an evolved outer tertiary companion on to the inner binary via a circumbinary disk. We apply this scenario to the observed double BS system Binary 7782 in the old open cluster NGC 188, and show that its observed properties are naturally reproduced within the context of the proposed model. We predict the following properties for twin BSs: (1) For the outer tertiary orbit, the initial orbital period should lie between 220 days $\lesssim$ P$_{\rm out}$ $\lesssim$ 1100 days, assumin…
Detached eclipsing binaries are remarkable systems to provide accurate fundamental stellar parameters. The fundamental stellar parameters and the metallicity values of stellar systems are needed to deeply understand the stellar evolution and formation. In this study, we focus on the detailed spectroscopic and photometric studies of three detached eclipsing binary systems, V372\,And, V2080\,Cyg, and CF\,Lyn to obtain their accurate stellar, atmospheric parameters, and chemical compositions. An analysis of light and radial velocity curves was carried out to derive the orbital and stellar paramete…
We evolve stellar models to study the common envelope (CE) interaction of an early asymptotic giant branch star of initial mass $5\,\rm M_{\odot}$ with a companion star of mass ranging from $0.1$ to $2\,\rm M_{\odot}$. We model the CE as a fast stripping phase in which the primary experiences rapid mass loss and loses about 80 per cent of its mass. The post-CE remnant is then allowed to thermally readjust during a Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) phase and the final binary system and its orbital period are investigated. We find that the post-CE RLOF phase is long enough to allow nuclear burning to p…
We present LAMOST J0140355+392651 (hereafter J0140), a close ($P_{\rm orb} = 3.81$ hours) binary containing a bloated, low-mass ($M \approx 0.15 M_{\odot}$) proto-white dwarf (WD) and a massive ($M\approx 0.95\,M_{\odot}$) WD companion. The system's optical light curve is dominated by large-amplitude ellipsoidal variability but also exhibits additional scatter, likely driven by pulsations. The proto-WD is cooler ($T_{\rm eff} = 6800\pm 100$ K) and more puffy ($\log\left[g/\left({\rm cm\,s^{-2}}\right)\right]=4.74\pm0.07$) than any known extremely low mass (ELM) WD, but hotter than any known ca…
We explore the effect of anisotropic wind driving on the properties of accretion onto black holes in close binaries. We specifically focus on line-driven winds, which are common in high-mass X-ray binaries. In close binary systems, the tidal force from the companion star can modify the wind structure in two different ways. One is the reduction of wind terminal velocity due to the weaker effective surface gravity. The other is the reduction in mass flux due to gravity darkening. We incorporate these effects into the so-called CAK theory in a simple way and investigate the wind flow around the a…
