The proximity effect of superconductivity on confined states in semiconductors gives rise to various bound states such as Andreev bound states (ABSs), Andreev molecules and Majorana zero modes. While such bound states do not conserve charge, their Fermion parity is a good quantum number. One way to measure parity is to convert it to charge first, which is then sensed. In this work, we sense the charge of ABSs and Andreev molecules in an InSb-Al hybrid nanowire using an integrated quantum dot operated as a charge sensor. We show how charge sensing measurements can resolve the even and odd states of an Andreev molecule, without affecting the parity. Such an approach can be further utilized for parity measurements of Majorana zero modes in Kitaev chains based on quantum dots.

Transport studies of Andreev bound states (ABSs) are complicated by the interplay of charging effects and superconductivity. Here, we compare transport approaches to ABS spectroscopy in a semiconductor-superconductor island to a charge-sensing approach based on an integrated radio-frequency single-electron transistor. Consistency of the methods demonstrates that fast, non-invasive charge sensing allows accurate quantitative measurement of ABSs while eluding some complexities of transport.
The Andreev spectrum of a quantum dot embedded in a hybrid semiconductor-superconductor interferometer can be modulated by electrostatic gating, magnetic flux through the interferometer, and Zeeman splitting from in-plane magnetic field. We demonstrate parity transitions in the embedded quantum dot system, and show that the Zeeman-driven transition is accompanied by a 0-π transition in the superconducting phase across the dot. We further demonstrate that flux through the interferometer modulates both dot parity and 0-π transitions.
We use a superconducting microresonator as a cavity to sense absorption of microwaves by a superconducting quantum point contact defined by surface gates over a proximitized two-dimensional electron gas. Renormalization of the cavity frequency with phase difference across the point contact is consistent with adiabatic coupling to Andreev bound states. Near $π$ phase difference, we observe random fluctuations in absorption with gate voltage, related to quantum interference-induced modulations in the electron transmission. We identify features consistent with the presence of single Andreev bound…
In this work, we systematically study two phases, called Andreev $π$-phase and orbital-phase, and their influence on the Josephson effect. When the system is time-reversal invariant and centrosymmetric, these two phases only appear in the odd-parity pairings. The Andreev $π$-phase has nothing to do with the specific form of the odd-parity pairings and means an intrinsic $π$-phase between the spin-triplet Cooper pairs entering and leaving CTSCs in the Andreev reflections. The orbital-phase corresponds to the phase difference between the spin-triplet Cooper pairs with opposite spin polarization …

Majorana bound states (MBS) and Andreev bound states (ABS) in realistic Majorana nanowires setups have similar experimental signatures which make them hard to distinguishing one from the other. Here, we characterize the continuous Majorana/Andreev crossover interpolating between fully-separated, partially-separated, and fully-overlapping Majorana modes, in terms of global and local topological invariants, fermion parity, quasiparticle densities, Majorana pseudospin and spin polarizations, density overlaps and transition probabilities between opposite Majorana components. We found that in inhom…
We propose the "Andreev molecule", an artificial quantum system composed of two closely spaced Josephson junctions. The coupling between Josephson junctions in an Andreev molecule occurs through the overlap and hybridization of the junction's "atomic" orbitals, Andreev Bound States. A striking consequence is that the supercurrent flowing through one junction depends on the superconducting phase difference across the other junction. Using the Bogolubiov-de-Gennes formalism, we derive the energy spectrum and non-local current-phase relation for arbitrary separation. We demonstrate the possibilit…
We demonstrate how to design various nonstandard types of Andreev-bound-state (ABS) dispersions, via a composite construction relying on Majorana bound states (MBSs). Here, the MBSs appear at the interface of a Josephson junction consisting of two topological superconductors (TSCs). Each TSC harbors multiple MBSs per edge by virtue of a chiral or unitary symmetry. We find that, while the ABS dispersions are $2π$-periodic, they still contain multiple crossings which are protected by the conservation of fermion parity. A single junction with four interface MBSs and all MBS couplings fully contro…

Reading out the parity degree of freedom of Majorana bound states is key to demonstrating their nonabelian exchange properties. Here, we present a low-energy model describing localized edge states in a two-arm device. We study parity-to-charge conversion based on coupling the superconductor bound states to a quantum dot whose charge is read out by a sensor. The dynamics of the system, including the readout device, is analyzed in full using a quantum-jump approach. We show how the resulting signal and noise ratio differentiates between local Majorana and Andreev bound states.
A Majorana box - two topological superconducting nanowires coupled via a trivial superconductor - is a building block in devices aiming to demonstrate nonabelian physics, as well as for topological quantum computer architectures. We theoretically investigate charge transport through a Majorana box and show that current can be blocked when two Majoranas couple to the same lead, fixing their parity. In direct analogy to Pauli spin blockade in spin qubits, this parity blockade can be used for fast and high-fidelity qubit initialization and readout, as well as for current-based measurements of dec…
Quantum dots are gate-defined within InSb nanowires, in proximity to NbTiN superconducting contacts. As the coupling between the dot and the superconductor is increased, the odd-parity occupations become non-discernible (erased) both above and below the induced superconducting gap. Above the gap, conductance in the odd Coulomb valleys increases until the valleys are lifted. Below the gap, Andreev bound states undergo quantum phase transitions to singlet ground states at odd occupancy. We observe that the apparent erasure of odd-parity regimes coincides at low-bias and at high-bias. This observ…
We show that the microwave (MW) spectra in semiconductor-nanowire-based transmon qubits provide a strong signature of the presence of Majorana bound states in the junction. This occurs as an external magnetic field tunes the wire into the topological regime and the energy splitting of the emergent Majorana modes oscillates around zero energy owing to their wave function spatial overlap in finite-length wires. In particular, we discuss how these Majorana oscillations, and the concomitant fermion parity switches in the ground state of the junction, result in distinct spectroscopic features --in …
We report direct detection of charge-tunneling between a quantum dot and a superconducting island through radio-frequency gate sensing. We are able to resolve spin-dependent quasiparticle tunneling as well as two-particle tunneling involving Cooper pairs. The quantum dot can act as an RF-only sensor to characterize the superconductor addition spectrum, enabling us to access subgap states without transport. Our results provide guidance for future dispersive parity measurements of Majorana modes, which can be realized by detecting the parity-dependent tunneling between dots and islands.
We demonstrate how the boundary-driven reconstruction of the superconducting order parameter can be employed to manipulate the zero-energy Majorana bound states (MBSs) occurring in a topological Josephson junction. We focus on an interface of two p-wave superconductors, which are described by a spin-vector order parameter $\bf{d}$. Apart from the sensitivity of $\bf{d}$ to external Zeeman/exchange fields, here, we show that the orientation of $\bf{d}$ throughout the junction can be controlled by electrically gating the weak link. The remarkable local character of this knob is a manifestation o…
Reading out Majorana bound states (MBSs) is essential both to verify their non-Abelian property and to realize topological quantum computation. Here, we construct a protocol to measure the parity of two MBSs in a Majorana island coupled to double quantum dot (DQD). The parity information is mapped to the charge state of the DQD through Landau-Zener transition. The operation needed is sweeping the bias of the DQD, which is followed by charge sensing. In the case without fine-tuning, a single run of sweep-and-detection implement a weak measurement of the parity. We find that in general a sequenc…
