A class of graphs admits an adjacency labeling scheme of size $b(n)$, if the vertices in each of its $n$-vertex graphs can be assigned binary strings (called labels) of length $b(n)$ so that the adjacency of two vertices can be determined solely from their labels.
We give tight bounds on the size of adjacency labels for every family of monotone (i.e., subgraph-closed) classes with a well-behaved growth function between $2^{O(n \log n)}$ and $2^{O(n^{2-δ})}$ for any $δ> 0$. Specifically, we show that for any function $f: \mathbb N \to \mathbb R$ satisfying $\log n \leqslant f(n) \leqslant n^{1-δ}$ for any fixed $δ> 0$, and some~sub-multiplicativity condition, there are monotone graph classes with growth $2^{O(nf(n))}$ that do not admit adjacency labels of size at most $f(n) \log n$. On the other hand, any such class does admit adjacency labels of size $O(f(n)\log n)$. Surprisingly this tight bound is a $Θ(\log n)$ factor away from the information-theoretic bound of $Ω(f(n))$. The special case when $f = \log$ implies that the recently-refuted Implicit Graph Conjecture [Hatami and Hatami, FOCS 2022] also fails within monotone classes.
We further show that the Implicit Graph Conjecture holds for all monotone \emph{small} classes. In other words, any monotone class with growth rate at most $n!\,c^n$ for some constant $c>0$, admits adjacency labels of information-theoretic order optimal size. In fact, we show a more general result that is of independent interest: any monotone small class of graphs has bounded degeneracy. We conjecture that the Implicit Graph Conjecture holds for all hereditary small classes.
In this paper, we prove almost tight bounds on the size of sound monotone switching networks accepting permutations sets of directed trees. This roughly corresponds to proving almost tight bounds bounds on the monotone memory efficiency of the directed ST-connectivity problem for the special case in which the input graph is guaranteed to have no path from s to t or be isomorphic to a specific directed tree.

In this paper, we study the energy of semigraphs and obtain some bounds, and show that one of the bounds is tight. We also study the spectra of the adjacency matrix of a special type of rooted 3-uniform semigraph and enumerate those explicitly.
We describe a way of assigning labels to the vertices of any undirected graph on up to $n$ vertices, each composed of $n/2+O(1)$ bits, such that given the labels of two vertices, and no other information regarding the graph, it is possible to decide whether or not the vertices are adjacent in the graph. This is optimal, up to an additive constant, and constitutes the first improvement in almost 50 years of an $n/2+O(\log n)$ bound of Moon. As a consequence, we obtain an induced-universal graph for $n$-vertex graphs containing only $O(2^{n/2})$ vertices, which is optimal up to a multiplicative …
We consider {\em monotone} embeddings of a finite metric space into low dimensional normed space. That is, embeddings that respect the order among the distances in the original space. Our main interest is in embeddings into Euclidean spaces. We observe that any metric on $n$ points can be embedded into $l_2^n$, while, (in a sense to be made precise later), for almost every $n$-point metric space, every monotone map must be into a space of dimension $Ω(n)$. It becomes natural, then, to seek explicit constructions of metric spaces that cannot be monotonically embedded into spaces of sublinear di…
Dual multiplicity graphs are those simple, undirected graphs that have a weighted Hermitian adjacency matrix with only two distinct eigenvalues. From the point of view of frame theory, their characterization can be restated as which graphs have a representation by a tight frame. In this paper, we classify certain line graphs that are tight frame graphs and improve a previous result on the embedding of frame graphs in tight frame graphs.
The Monotone Upper Bound Problem asks for the maximal number M(d,n) of vertices on a strictly-increasing edge-path on a simple d-polytope with n facets. More specifically, it asks whether the upper bound M(d,n)<=M_{ubt}(d,n) provided by McMullen's (1970) Upper Bound Theorem is tight, where M_{ubt}(d,n) is the number of vertices of a dual-to-cyclic d-polytope with n facets. It was recently shown that the upper bound M(d,n)<=M_{ubt}(d,n) holds with equality for small dimensions (d<=4: Pfeifle, 2003) and for small corank (n<=d+2: Gärtner et al., 2001). Here we prove that it is not tight in genera…
The purpose of this article is to improve existing lower bounds on the chromatic number chi. Let mu_1,...,mu_n be the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix sorted in non-increasing order. First, we prove the lower bound chi >= 1 + max_m {sum_{i=1}^m mu_i / - sum_{i=1}^m mu_{n-i+1}} for m=1,...,n-1. This generalizes the Hoffman lower bound which only involves the maximum and minimum eigenvalues, i.e., the case $m=1$. We provide several examples for which the new bound exceeds the {\sc Hoffman} lower bound. Second, we conjecture the lower bound chi >= 1 + S^+ / S^-, where S^+ and S^- are the sums …
To each of the Johnson, Grassmann and Hamming graphs we associate a lattice and characterize the eigenspaces of the adjacency operator in terms of this lattice . We also show that each level of the lattice induces in a natural way a tight frame for each eigenspace. For the most important eigenspace we compute explicitly the constant associated to the tight frame. Using the lattice we also give a formula for the product of the Norton algebra attached to that eigenspace.
Given a simple and connected graph $G=(V,E)$, and a positive integer $k$, a set $S\subseteq V$ is said to be a $k$-metric generator for $G$, if for any pair of different vertices $u,v\in V$, there exist at least $k$ vertices $w_1,w_2,\ldots,w_k\in S$ such that $d_G(u,w_i)\ne d_G(v,w_i)$, for every $i\in \{1,\ldots,k\}$, where $d_G(x,y)$ denotes the distance between $x$ and $y$. The minimum cardinality of a $k$-metric generator is the $k$-metric dimension of $G$. A set $S\subseteq V$ is a $k$-adjacency generator for $G$ if any two different vertices $x,y\in V(G)$ satisfy $|((N_G(x)\triangledown…
Given a graph $G$ and a bijection $f : E(G)\rightarrow \{1, 2, \ldots,e(G)\}$, we say that a trail/path in $G$ is $f$-\emph{increasing} if the labels of consecutive edges of this trail/path form an increasing sequence. More than 40 years ago Chvátal and Komlós raised the question of providing the worst-case estimates of the length of the longest increasing trail/path over all edge orderings of $K_n$. The case of a trail was resolved by Graham and Kleitman, who proved that the answer is $n-1$, and the case of a path is still widely open. Recently Lavrov and Loh proposed to study the average cas…
Let $ω(G)$ and $χ(G)$ denote the clique number and chromatic number of a graph $G$, respectively. The {\em disjointness graph} of a family of curves (continuous arcs in the plane) is the graph whose vertices correspond to the curves and in which two vertices are joined by an edge if and only if the corresponding curves are disjoint. A curve is called {\em $x$-monotone} if every vertical line intersects it in at most one point. An $x$-monotone curve is {\em grounded} if its left endpoint lies on the $y$-axis. We prove that if $G$ is the disjointness graph of a family of grounded $x$-monotone cu…
A graph drawn in the plane with n vertices is k-fan-crossing free for k > 1 if there are no k+1 edges $g,e_1,...e_k$, such that $e_1,e_2,...e_k$ have a common endpoint and $g$ crosses all $e_i$. We prove a tight bound of 4n-8 on the maximum number of edges of a 2-fan-crossing free graph, and a tight 4n-9 bound for a straight-edge drawing. For k > 2, we prove an upper bound of 3(k-1)(n-2) edges. We also discuss generalizations to monotone graph properties.
An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph $H$ with a specified linear ordering of the vertices, and the appearance of an ordered hypergraph $G$ in $H$ must respect the specified order on $V(G)$. In on-line Ramsey theory, Builder iteratively presents edges that Painter must immediately color. The $t$-color on-line size Ramsey number $\tilde R_t (G)$ of an ordered hypergraph $G$ is the minimum number of edges Builder needs to play (on a large ordered set of vertices) to force Painter using $t$ colors to produce a monochromatic copy of $G$. The monotone tight path $P_r^{(k)}$ is the ordered hypergrap…
We consider the extremal family of graphs of order $2^n$ in which no two vertices have identical neighbourhoods, yet the adjacency matrix has rank only $n$ over the field of two elements. A previous result from algebraic geometry shows that such graphs exist for all even $n$ and do not exist for odd $n$. In this paper we provide a new combinatorial proof for this result, offering greater insight to the structure of graphs with these properties. We introduce a new graph product closely related to the Kronecker product, followed by a construction for such graphs for any even $n$. Moreover, we sh…
Given any graph $G$, the (adjacency) spread of $G$ is the maximum absolute difference between any two eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$. In this paper, we resolve a pair of 20-year-old conjectures of Gregory, Hershkowitz, and Kirkland regarding the spread of graphs. The first states that for all positive integers $n$, the $n$-vertex graph $G$ that maximizes spread is the join of a clique and an independent set, with $\lfloor 2n/3 \rfloor$ and $\lceil n/3 \rceil$ vertices, respectively. Using techniques from the theory of graph limits and numerical analysis, we prove this claim for all…
The classical correlation inequality of Harris asserts that any two monotone increasing families on the discrete cube are nonnegatively correlated. In 1996, Talagrand established a lower bound on the correlation in terms of how much the two families depend simultaneously on the same coordinates. Talagrand's method and results inspired a number of important works in combinatorics and probability theory. In this paper we present stronger correlation lower bounds that hold when the increasing families satisfy natural regularity or symmetry conditions. In addition, we present several new classes o…
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For every real $α\in\left[ 0,1\right],$ define the matrix $A_α\left(G\right) $ as \[ A_α\left(G\right) =αD\left(G\right) +(1-α)A\left(G\right) \] where $0\leqα\leq1$. This paper gives several results about the $A_α$-matrices of trees. In particular, it is shown that if $T_Δ$ is a tree of maximal degree $Δ,$ then the spectral radius of $A_α(T_Δ)$ satisfies the tight inequality \[ ρ(A_α(T_Δ))<αΔ+2(1-α)\sqrt{Δ-1}. \] This bound extends previous bounds of Godsil, Lovász, and Stevanović. The…
This paper gives a tight upper bound on the spectral radius of the signless Laplacian of graphs of given order and clique number. More precisely, let G be a graph of order n, let A be its adjacency matrix, and let D be the diagonal matrix of the row-sums of A. If G has clique number r, then the largest eigenvalue q(G) of the matrix Q=A+D satisfies q(G)<= 2(1-1/r)n. If G is a complete regular r-partite graph, then equality holds in the above inequality. This result confirms a conjecture of Hansen and Lucas.
