In open quantum systems, first- and second-order dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) can emerge in the thermodynamic limit from the competition between unitary evolution, driving terms, and dissipation. The order of a DPT is defined by the continuity properties of the steady state. Until now, second-order DPTs have predominantly been investigated theoretically, while first-order DPTs have been observed in key experiments based on the theory of the single-photon driven Kerr resonator. We present here the first comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis of both first and second-order DPTs in a two-photon (i.e., parametrically) driven Kerr superconducting resonator. Firstly, we characterize the steady state and its main features at the second- and first-order critical points: squeezing below vacuum and coexistence of two phases with different photon numbers, respectively. Then, by continuously monitoring the system along quantum trajectories, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics across the critical points. We witness the hysteresis cycles associated with the first-order DPT and the spontaneous symmetry breaking due to the second-order DPT. Applying the spectral theory of the Liouvillian superoperator, we develop efficient procedures to quantify the critical slowing down associated with the timescales of these processes. When scaling towards the thermodynamic limit, these timescales span five orders of magnitude. Our results corroborate the predictions derived using the Liouvillian theory of DPTs. This work stands as a compelling example of engineering and controlling of criticality in superconducting circuits. It marks a significant advancement in the use of two-photon driven Kerr resonators for criticality-enhanced quantum information applications.
In the framework of the nonsecular perturbation theory based on the Bogoliubov averaging method, an optomechanical system with an asymmetric anharmonic mechanical resonator is studied. The cross-Kerr interaction and the Kerr-like self-interaction of photons and vibration quanta arise in the Hamiltonian. These interactions are induced by both cubic and quartic nonlinearities of oscillations of the mechanical resonator and the cavity-resonator interaction that is linear in mechanical displacements. We demonstrate a bistable behavior of the number of vibration quanta and find that this behavior i…
We investigate temperature reservoir effects in a lossy Kerr nonlinear resonator considering selective excitation of ooscillatory mode driven by a sequence of Gaussian pulses. In this way, we analyze time-dependent populations of photon-number states and quantum statistics on the base of second-order photon correlation function in one-photon and two-photon transitions. The effects coming from thermal reservoirs are interesting for performing more realistic approach to generate Fock states and for study phenomena connecting quantum engineering and temperature. We also study the role of pulse-sh…
We study Kerr nonlinear resonators (KNR) driven by a continuous wave field in quantum regimes where strong Kerr interactions give rise to selective resonant excitations of oscillatory modes. We use an exact quantum theory of KNR in the framework of the Fokker-Planck equation without any quantum state truncation or perturbation procedure. This approach allows non-perturbative consideration of KNR for various quantum operational regimes including cascaded processes between oscillatory states. We focus on understanding of multi-photon non-resonant and selective resonant excitations of introcavity…
We provide a general method to find the Hamiltonian of a linear circuit in the presence of a nonlinearity. Focussing on the case of a Josephson junction embedded in a transmission-line resonator, we solve for the normal modes of the system by taking into account exactly the effect of the quadratic (i.e. inductive) part of the Josephson potential. The nonlinearity is then found to lead to self and cross-Kerr effect, as well as beam-splitter type interactions between modes. By adjusting the parameters of the circuit, the Kerr coefficient K can be made to reach values that are weak (K < κ), stron…
We present a new approach for deriving exact, closed-form solutions for the steady state of a wide class of driven-dissipative nonlinear resonators that is distinct from more common positive-$P$ function methods. Our method generalizes the coherent quantum absorber approach of Stannigel et al. to include nonlinear driving and dissipation, and relies crucially on exploiting the Segal-Bargmann representation of Fock space. Our solutions and method reveal a wealth of previously unexplored observable phenomena in these systems, including new generalized photon-blockade and anti-blockade effects, a…
Cat states of the microwave field stored in high-Q resonators show great promise for robust encoding and manipulation of quantum information. Here we propose an approach to efficiently prepare such cat states in a Kerr-nonlinear resonator by the use of a two-photon drive. We show that this preparation is robust against single-photon loss. We moreover find that it is possible to remove undesirable phase evolution induced by a Kerr nonlinearity using a two-photon drive of appropriate amplitude and phase. Finally, we present a universal set of quantum logical gates that can be performed on the en…
We present a heralded state preparation scheme for driven nonlinear open quantum systems. The protocol is based on a continuous photon counting measurement of the system's decay channel. When no photons are detected for a period of time, the system has relaxed to a measurement-induced pseudo-steady state. We illustrate the protocol by the creation of states with a negative Wigner function in a Kerr oscillator, a system whose unconditional steady state is strictly positive.
We propose the use of a superconducting charge qubit capacitively coupled to two resonant nanomechanical resonators to generate Yurke-Stoler states, i.e. quantum superpositions of pairs of distinguishable coherent states 180$^\circ$ out of phase with each other. This is achieved by effectively implementing Kerr nonlinearities induced through application of a strong external driving field in one of the resonators. A simple study of the effect of dissipation on our scheme is also presented, and lower bounds of fidelity and purity of the generated state are calculated. Our procedure to implement …
We study a minimal model that has a driven-dissipative quantum phase transition, namely a Kerr non-linear oscillator subject to driving and dissipation. Using mean-field theory, exact diagonalization, and the Keldysh formalism, we analyze the critical phenomena in this system, showing which aspects can be captured by each approach and how the approaches complement each other. Then critical scaling and finite-size scaling are calculated analytically using the quantum Langevin equation. The physics contained in this simple model is surprisingly rich: it includes a continuous phase transition, $Z…
We have designed a tunable nonlinear resonator terminated by a SNAIL (Superconducting Nonlinear Asymmetric Inductive eLement). Such a device possesses a sweet spot in which the external magnetic flux allows to suppress the Kerr interaction. We have excited photons near this Kerr-free point and characterized the device using a transmon qubit. The excitation spectrum of the qubit allows to observe photon-number-dependent frequency shifts about nine times larger than the qubit linewidth. Our study demonstrates a compact integrated platform for continuous-variable quantum processing that combines …
We theoretically study high-order optomechanically-induced transparency (OMIT) process in a nonlinear Kerr resonator. A frequency shift induced by the Kerr effect, is identified for the optical cavity mode, which results in asymmetric OMIT windows of the signal and its higher-order sidebands. We also find that both the sideband amplitude and its associated group delay sensitively depend on the strength of the Kerr nonlinearity. This indicates the possibility to enhance or steer the performance of OMIT devices with various nonlinear optical cavities.
We propose a scheme for enhancing the optomechanical coupling between microwave and mechanical resonators by up to seven orders of magnitude to the ultrastrong coupling limit in a circuit optomechanical setting. The tripartite system considered here consists of a Josephson junction Cooper-pair box that mediates the coupling between the microwave cavity and the mechanical resonator. The optomechanical coupling can be modified by tuning the gate charge and the magnetic flux bias of the Cooper-pair box which in turn affect the Josephson capacitance of the Cooper-pair box. We additionally show tha…
We propose a realizable circuit QED architecture for engineering states of a superconducting resonator off-resonantly coupled to an ancillary superconducting qubit. The qubit-resonator dispersive interaction together with a microwave drive applied to the qubit gives rise to a Kerr resonator with two-photon driving that enables us to efficiently engineer the quantum state of the resonator such as generation of the Schrodinger cat states for resonator-based universal quantum computation. Moreover, the presented architecture is easily scalable for solving optimization problem mapped into the Isin…
We calculate the transmission spectra of a flux qubit coupled to a dissipative resonator in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Such a qubit-oscillator system constitutes the building block of superconducting circuit QED platforms. The calculated transmission of a weak probe field quantifies the response of the qubit, in frequency domain, under the sole influence of the oscillator and of its dissipative environment, an Ohmic heat bath. We find the distinctive features of the qubit-resonator system, namely two-dip structures in the calculated transmission, modified by the presence of the dissipati…
We have observed period-tripling subharmonic oscillations, in a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator operated in the quantum regime, $k_B T \ll \hbarω$. The resonator is terminated by a tunable inductance that provides a Kerr-type nonlinearity. We detected the output field quadratures at frequencies near the fundamental mode, $ω/2π\sim 5\,$GHz, when the resonator was driven by a current at $3ω$ with an amplitude exceeding an instability threshold. The output radiation was red-detuned from the fundamental mode. We observed three stable radiative states with equal amplitudes and phase-sh…
Dissipative Kerr solitons arising from parametric gain in ring microresonators are usually described within a classical mean-field framework. Here, we develop a quantum-mechanical model of dissipative Kerr solitons in terms of the truncated Wigner method, which accounts for quantum effects to lowest order. We show that the soliton experiences a finite lifetime due to quantum fluctuations originating from losses. Reading the results in terms of the theory of open quantum systems, allows to estimate the Liouvillian spectrum of the system. It is characterized by a set of eigenvalues with finite i…
We present a theoretical treatment for the dissipative two-resonator circuit quantum electrodynamics setup referred to as quantum switch. There, switchable coupling between two superconducting resonators is mediated by a superconducting qubit operating in the dispersive regime, where the qubit transition frequency is far detuned from those of the resonators. We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the quantum switch beyond the rotating wave approximation and study the dissipative dynamics within a Bloch-Redfield quantum master equation approach. We derive analytically how the qubit affects the …
Driven-dissipative kerr lattices with two-photon driving are experimentally relevant systems known to exhibit a symmetry-breaking phase transition, which belongs to the universality class of the thermal Ising model for the parameter regime studied here. In this work, we perform finite-size scaling of this system as it is quenched to the transition and the dynamical critical exponent is found to be compatible with $z\approx2.18$ corresponding with metropolis dynamics in classical simulations. Furthermore, we show that the Liouvillian gap scales with the same exponent, similar to scaling of the …
We study the spectral properties of Markovian driven-dissipative quantum systems, focusing on the nonlinear quantum van der Pol oscillator as a paradigmatic example. We discuss a generalized Lehmann representation, in which single-particle Green's functions are expressed in terms of the eigenstates and eigenvalues of the Liouvillian. Applying it to the quantum van der Pol oscillator, we find a wealth of phenomena that are not apparent in the steady-state density matrix alone. Unlike the steady state, the photonic spectral function has a strong dependence on interaction strength. Further, we fi…
Macroscopic cat states have been widely studied to illustrate fundamental principles of quantum physics as well as their application in quantum information processing. In this paper, we propose a quantum speedup method for adiabatic creation of cat states in a Kerr nonlinear resonator via gradient-descent optimal adiabatic control. By simultaneously adiabatic tuning the the cavity detuning and driving field strength, the width of minimum energy gap between the target trajectory and non-adiabatic trajectory can be widen, which allows us to speed up the evolution along the adiabatic path. Compar…
We consider the Jaynes-Cummings model describing the interaction of a Cooper pair box (CPB) and a nanoresonator (NR) in the presence of a Kerr medium and losses The evolution of the entropy of both subsystems and the CPB population inversion were calculated numerically. It is found that these properties increase when the NR frequency is time-dependent, even in the presence of losses; the effect is very sensitive to detuning and disappears in the resonant regime. The roles played by the losses affecting the CPB and the NR are also compared.
By using the thermo entangled state representation we solve the master equation for a dissipative cavity with Kerr medium to obtain density operators' infinite operator-sum representation}$ρ(t) =\sum_{m,n,l=0}^{\infty}M_{m,n,l}ρ_{0}\mathcal{M}_{m,n,l}^{\dagger}.$ It is noticeable that}$M_{m,n,l}$ is not hermite conjugate to $\mathcal{M}_{m,n,l}^{\dagger}$, nevertheless the normalization}$\sum_{m,n,l=0}^{\infty}\mathcal{M}_{nm,,l}^{\dagger}M_{m,n,l}=1$ still holds}, i.e., they are trace-preserving in a general sense. This example may stimulate further studying if general superoperator theory ne…
The notion of nonreciprocity, in essence when going forwards is different from going backwards, emerges in all branches of physics from cosmology to electromagnetism. Intriguingly, the breakdown of reciprocity is typically associated with extraordinary phenomena, which may be readily capitalized on in the design of (for example) nontrivial electromagnetic devices when Lorentz reciprocity is broken. However, in order to enable the exploitation of nonreciprocal-like effects in the next generation of quantum technologies, basic quantum optical theories are required. Here we present a versatile mo…
Heralded near-deterministic multi-qubit controlled phase gates with integrated error detection have recently been proposed by Borregaard et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 110502 (2015)]. This protocol is based on a single four-level atom (a heralding quartit) and $N$ three-level atoms (operational qutrits) coupled to a single-resonator mode acting as a cavity bus. Here we generalize this method for two distant resonators without the cavity bus between the heralding and operational atoms. Specifically, we analyze the two-qubit controlled-Z gate and its multi-qubit-controlled generalization (i.e., a…
The realization of cross-Kerr nonlinearity is an important task for many applications in quantum information processing. In this work, we propose a method for realizing cross-Kerr nonlinearity interaction between two superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators coupled by a three-level superconducting flux qutrit (coupler). By employing the qutrit-resonator dispersive interaction, we derive an effective Hamiltonian involving two-photon number operators and a coupler operator. This Hamiltonian can be used to describe a cross-Kerr nonlinearity interaction between two resonators when the coupler…
For the driven-dissipative system of two coupled bosonic modes in a nonlinear cavity resonator, we demonstrate a sequence of phase transitions from a trivial steady state to two distinct dissipative time crystalline phases. These effects are already anticipated at the level of the semiclassical analysis of the Lindblad equation using the theory of bifurcations and are further supported by the full quantum (numerical) treatment. The system is predicted to exhibit different dynamical phases characterized by an oscillating non-equilibrium steady state with non-trivial periodicity, which is a hall…
Coupled resonator arrays have been shown to exhibit interesting many- body physics including Mott and Fractional Hall states of photons. One of the main differences between these photonic quantum simulators and their cold atoms coun- terparts is in the dissipative nature of their photonic excitations. The natural equi- librium state is where there are no photons left in the cavity. Pumping the system with external drives is therefore necessary to compensate for the losses and realise non-trivial states. The external driving here can easily be tuned to be incoherent, coherent or fully quantum, …
The parametrically pumped Kerr model describes a driven-dissipative nonlinear cavity, whose nonequilibrium phase diagram features both continuous and discontinuous quantum phase transitions. We consider the consequences of these critical phenomena for the fluctuations of the photocurrent obtained via continuous weak measurements on the cavity. Considering both direct photodetection and homodyne detection schemes, we find that the current fluctuations diverge exponentially at the discontinuous phase transition. However, we find strikingly different current fluctuations for these two detection s…

We investigate two different kinds of quantum trajectories for a nonlinear photon resonator subject to two-photon pumping, a configuration recently studied for the generation of photonic Schroedinger cat states. In the absence of feedback control and in the strong-driving limit, the steady-state density matrix is a statistical mixture of two states with equal weight. While along a single photon-counting trajectory the systems intermittently switches between an odd and an even cat state, we show that upon homodyne detection the situation is different. Indeed, homodyne quantum trajectories revea…
We report on the experimental investigation of the fluctuation properties in the resonance frequency spectra of a flat resonator simulating a dissipative quantum billiard subject to partial time-reversal invariance violation (TIV) which is induced by two magnetized ferrites. The cavity has the shape of a quarter bowtie billiard of which the corresponding classical dynamics is chaotic. Due to dissipation it is impossible to identify a complete list of resonance frequencies. Based on a random-matrix theory approach we derive analytical expressions for statistical measures of short- and long-rang…
We study controllable single photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide coupling with an additional cavity by second order nonlinear materials in a non-cascading configuration, where the additional cavity is embedded with two-level atom and filled with Kerr-nonlinear materials. Considering the second order nonlinear coupling, we analyze the transmission properties of the three different coupling forms as follows: (i) The two-level atom is excited without the Kerr-nonlinearity. (ii)The Kerr-nonlinearity is excited without the two-level atom. (iii) Both of the two-level atom and Kerr-nonli…
A deterministic scheme for generating a macroscopic superposition state of a nanomechanical resonator is proposed. The nonclassical state is generated through a suitably engineered dissipative dynamics exploiting the optomechanical quadratic interaction with a bichromatically driven optical cavity mode. The resulting driven dissipative dynamics can be employed for monitoring and testing the decoherence processes affecting the nanomechanical resonator under controlled conditions.
We present exact results for the steady-state density matrix of a general class of driven-dissipative systems consisting of a nonlinear Kerr resonator in the presence of both coherent (one-photon) and parametric (two-photon) driving and dissipation. Thanks to the analytical solution, obtained via the complex P-representation formalism, we are able to explore any regime, including photon blockade, multiphoton resonant effects, and a mesoscopic regime with large photon density and quantum correlations. We show how the interplay between one- and two-photon driving provides a way to control the mu…
We report a first-principles study of the driven dissipative dynamics for Kerr oscillators in the mesoscopic regime. This regime is characterized by large Kerr nonlinearity, realized here using the nonlinear kinetic inductance of a large array of Josephson junctions. The experimentally measured nonlinear resonance lineshapes of the junction array modes show significant deviations from steady-state numerical predictions, and necessitate time-dependent numerical simulations indicative of strong measurement-induced dephasing in the system arising from the large cross-Kerr effect between array mod…

While a propagating state of light can be generated with arbitrary squeezing by pumping a parametric resonator, the intra-resonator state is limited to 3 dB of squeezing. Here, we implement a reservoir engineering method to surpass this limit using superconducting circuits. Two-tone pumping of a three-wave-mixing element implements an effective coupling to a squeezed bath which stabilizes a squeezed state inside the resonator. Using an ancillary superconducting qubit as a probe allows us to perform a direct Wigner tomography of the intra-resonator state. The raw measurement provides a lower bo…
An optical realization of the damped quantum oscillator, based on transverse light dynamics in an optical resonator with slowly-moving mirrors, is theoretically suggested. The optical resonator setting provides a simple implementation of the time-dependent Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian of the dissipative quantum oscillator, and enables to visualize the effects of damped oscillations in the classical (ray optics) limit and wave packet collapse in the quantum (wave optics) regime.
