In recent research, Learned Image Compression has gained prominence for its capacity to outperform traditional handcrafted pipelines, especially at low bit-rates. While existing methods incorporate convolutional priors with occasional attention blocks to address long-range dependencies, recent advances in computer vision advocate for a transformative shift towards fully transformer-based architectures grounded in the attention mechanism. This paper investigates the feasibility of image compression exclusively using attention layers within our novel model, QPressFormer. We introduce the concept of learned image queries to aggregate patch information via cross-attention, followed by quantization and coding techniques. Through extensive evaluations, our work demonstrates competitive performance achieved by convolution-free architectures across the popular Kodak, DIV2K, and CLIC datasets.

Lossless image compression is an essential research field in image compression. Recently, learning-based image compression methods achieved impressive performance compared with traditional lossless methods, such as WebP, JPEG2000, and FLIF. However, there are still many impressive lossy compression methods that can be applied to lossless compression. Therefore, in this paper, we explore the methods widely used in lossy compression and apply them to lossless compression. Inspired by the impressive performance of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) shown in lossy compression, we generate a lossless…
We propose a deep learning system for attention-guided dual-layer image compression (AGDL). In the AGDL compression system, an image is encoded into two layers, a base layer and an attention-guided refinement layer. Unlike the existing ROI image compression methods that spend an extra bit budget equally on all pixels in ROI, AGDL employs a CNN module to predict those pixels on and near a saliency sketch within ROI that are critical to perceptual quality. Only the critical pixels are further sampled by compressive sensing (CS) to form a very compact refinement layer. Another novel CNN method is…

Learned image compression methods have exhibited superior rate-distortion performance than classical image compression standards. Most existing learned image compression models are based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Despite great contributions, a main drawback of CNN based model is that its structure is not designed for capturing local redundancy, especially the non-repetitive textures, which severely affects the reconstruction quality. Therefore, how to make full use of both global structure and local texture becomes the core problem for learning-based image compression. Inspired …

The traditional image compressors, e.g., BPG and H.266, have achieved great image and video compression quality. Recently, Convolutional Neural Network has been used widely in image compression. We proposed an attention-based convolutional neural network for low bit-rate compression to post-process the output of traditional image compression decoder. Across the experimental results on validation sets, the post-processing module trained by MAE and MS-SSIM losses yields the highest PSNR of 32.10 on average at the bit-rate of 0.15.

Neural image compression leverages deep neural networks to outperform traditional image codecs in rate-distortion performance. However, the resulting models are also heavy, computationally demanding and generally optimized for a single rate, limiting their practical use. Focusing on practical image compression, we propose slimmable compressive autoencoders (SlimCAEs), where rate (R) and distortion (D) are jointly optimized for different capacities. Once trained, encoders and decoders can be executed at different capacities, leading to different rates and complexities. We show that a successful…

Recent advances in deep learning have led to superhuman performance across a variety of applications. Recently, these methods have been successfully employed to improve the rate-distortion performance in the task of image compression. However, current methods either use additional post-processing blocks on the decoder end to improve compression or propose an end-to-end compression scheme based on heuristics. For the majority of these, the trained deep neural networks (DNNs) are not compatible with standard encoders and would be difficult to deply on personal computers and cellphones. In light …
Implicit neural representations (INR) have been recently proposed as deep learning (DL) based solutions for image compression. An image can be compressed by training an INR model with fewer weights than the number of image pixels to map the coordinates of the image to corresponding pixel values. While traditional training approaches for INRs are based on enforcing pixel-wise image consistency, we propose to further improve image quality by using a new structural regularizer. We present structural regularization for INR compression (SINCO) as a novel INR method for image compression. SINCO impo…
We describe Substitutional Neural Image Compression (SNIC), a general approach for enhancing any neural image compression model, that requires no data or additional tuning of the trained model. It boosts compression performance toward a flexible distortion metric and enables bit-rate control using a single model instance. The key idea is to replace the image to be compressed with a substitutional one that outperforms the original one in a desired way. Finding such a substitute is inherently difficult for conventional codecs, yet surprisingly favorable for neural compression models thanks to th…
End-to-end trainable models have reached the performance of traditional handcrafted compression techniques on videos and images. Since the parameters of these models are learned over large training sets, they are not optimal for any given image to be compressed. In this paper, we propose an instance-based fine-tuning of a subset of decoder's bias to improve the reconstruction quality in exchange for extra encoding time and minor additional signaling cost. The proposed method is applicable to any end-to-end compression methods, improving the state-of-the-art neural image compression BD-rate by …

Computer vision tasks are often expected to be executed on compressed images. Classical image compression standards like JPEG 2000 are widely used. However, they do not account for the specific end-task at hand. Motivated by works on recurrent neural network (RNN)-based image compression and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction, we propose unified network architectures to solve both tasks jointly. These joint models provide image compression tailored for the specific task of 3D reconstruction. Images compressed by our proposed models, yield 3D reconstruction performance superior as compared t…

Neural image compression have reached or out-performed traditional methods (such as JPEG, BPG, WebP). However, their sophisticated network structures with cascaded convolution layers bring heavy computational burden for practical deployment. In this paper, we explore the structural sparsity in neural image compression network to obtain real-time acceleration without any specialized hardware design or algorithm. We propose a simple plug-in adaptive binary channel masking(ABCM) to judge the importance of each convolution channel and introduce sparsity during training. During inference, the unimpo…
We propose a new simple approach for image compression: instead of storing the RGB values for each pixel of an image, we store the weights of a neural network overfitted to the image. Specifically, to encode an image, we fit it with an MLP which maps pixel locations to RGB values. We then quantize and store the weights of this MLP as a code for the image. To decode the image, we simply evaluate the MLP at every pixel location. We found that this simple approach outperforms JPEG at low bit-rates, even without entropy coding or learning a distribution over weights. While our framework is not yet…
If a unit cannot receive intelligence from a source due to external factors, we consider them disadvantaged users. We categorize this as a preoccupied unit working on a low connectivity device on the edge. This case requires that we use a different approach to deliver intelligence, particularly satellite imagery information, than normally employed. To address this, we propose a survey of information reduction techniques to deliver the information from a satellite image in a smaller package. We investigate four techniques to aid in the reduction of delivered information: traditional image compr…

CNN operate on entire input images. On the other hand, traditional state-of-the-art image and video compression methods process images with a block-by-block processing approach for various reasons. Very recently, work on learned image compression with block based approaches have …
Deep learning, e.g., convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has achieved great success in image processing and computer vision especially in high level vision applications such as recognition and understanding. However, it is rarely used to solve low-level vision problems such as image compression studied in this paper. Here, we move forward a step and propose a novel compression framework based on CNNs. To achieve high-quality image compression at low bit rates, two CNNs are seamlessly integrated into an end-to-end compression framework. The first CNN, named compact convolutional neural networ…
This paper presents a set of full-resolution lossy image compression methods based on neural networks. Each of the architectures we describe can provide variable compression rates during deployment without requiring retraining of the network: each network need only be trained once. All of our architectures consist of a recurrent neural network (RNN)-based encoder and decoder, a binarizer, and a neural network for entropy coding. We compare RNN types (LSTM, associative LSTM) and introduce a new hybrid of GRU and ResNet. We also study "one-shot" versus additive reconstruction architectures and i…
Although convolutional representation of multiscale sparse tensor demonstrated its superior efficiency to accurately model the occupancy probability for the compression of geometry component of dense object point clouds, its capacity for representing sparse LiDAR point cloud geometry (PCG) was largely limited. This is because 1) fixed receptive field of the convolution cannot characterize extremely and unevenly distributed sparse LiDAR points very well; and 2) pretrained convolutions with fixed weights are insufficient to dynamically capture information conditioned on the input. This work ther…
We present the first neural video compression method based on generative adversarial networks (GANs). Our approach significantly outperforms previous neural and non-neural video compression methods in a user study, setting a new state-of-the-art in visual quality for neural methods. We show that the GAN loss is crucial to obtain this high visual quality. Two components make the GAN loss effective: we i) synthesize detail by conditioning the generator on a latent extracted from the warped previous reconstruction to then ii) propagate this detail with high-quality flow. We find that user studies…
We customize an end-to-end image compression framework for retina OCT images based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The customized compression scheme consists of three parts: data Preprocessing, compression CNNs, and reconstruction CNNs. Data preprocessing module reduces the speckle noise of the OCT images and the segments out the region of interest. We added customized skip connections between the compression CNNs and the reconstruction CNNs to reserve the detail information and trained the two nets together with the semantic segmented image patches from data preprocessing module…

However, loop filtering is a challenging task due to the variation in video content and sampling densities. In this paper, we propose a on-line scaling based multi…

Using more reference frames can significantly improve the compression efficiency in neural video compression. However, in low-latency scenarios, most existing neural video compression frameworks usually use the previous one frame as reference. Or a few frameworks which use the previous multiple frames as reference only adopt a simple multi-reference frames propagation mechanism. In this paper, we present a more reasonable multi-reference frames propagation mechanism for neural video compression, called butterfly multi-reference frame propagation mechanism (Butterfly), which allows a more effec…
Neural compression algorithms are typically based on autoencoders that require specialized encoder and decoder architectures for different data modalities. In this paper, we propose COIN++, a neural compression framework that seamlessly handles a wide range of data modalities. Our approach is based on converting data to implicit neural representations, i.e. neural functions that map coordinates (such as pixel locations) to features (such as RGB values). Then, instead of storing the weights of the implicit neural representation directly, we store modulations applied to a meta-learned base netwo…

Network compression is crucial to making the deep networks to be more efficient, faster, and generalizable to low-end hardware. Current network compression methods have two open problems: first, there lacks a theoretical framework to estimate the maximum compression rate; second, some layers may get over-prunned, resulting in significant network performance drop. To solve these two problems, this study propose a gradient-matrix singularity analysis-based method to estimate the maximum network redundancy. Guided by that maximum rate, a novel and efficient hierarchical network pruning algorithm …

Our NLAIC 1) embeds non-local network operations as non-linear transforms in the encoders and decoders for both the image and the latent representation probability information (known as hyperprior) to capture both local and global correlations, 2) applies attention mechanism to generate masks that are used to weigh the features, which implicitly adapt bit alloca…
