We present results on numerical calculations of the sensitivity coefficients, Qmu, of microwave molecular transitions in (13C)H3OH and CH3(18O)H to the hypothetical variation in the fundamental physical constant mu - the electron-to-proton mass ratio. The invariability of mu in time and space is one of the basic assumptions of the Standard Model of particle physics which can be tested at cosmological scales by means of astronomical observations in the Galaxy and external galaxies. Our calculations show that these two methanol isotopologues can be utilized for such tests since their microwave transitions from the frequency interval 1-100 GHz exhibit a large spread in Qmu values which span a range of -109 < Qmu < 78. We show that the thermal emission lines of (13C)H3OH observed in the star-forming region NGC6334I constrain the variability of mu at a level of 3x10^-8 (1σ), which is in line with the most stringent upper limits obtained previously from observations of methanol (CH3OH) and other molecules in the Galaxy.
We present new radio-frequency interferometric maps of emission from the 14NH3, 15NH3, and 14NH2D isotopologues of ammonia, and the 12CH3OH and 13CH3OH isotopologues of methanol toward Sgr B2(N). With a resolution of ~3'' (0.1 pc), we are able to spatially resolve emission from two hot cores in this source and separate it from absorption against the compact HII regions in this area. The first (N1) is the well-known v = 64 km/s core, and the second (N2) is a core 6'' to the north at v = 73 km/s. Using emission from 15NH3, and hyperfine satellites of 14NH3 metastable transitions we estimate the …

We estimate limits on non-universal coupling of hypothetical hidden fields to standard matter by evaluating the fractional changes in the electron-to-proton mass ratio, mu = m_e/m_p, based on observations of ClassI methanol masers distributed in the Milky Way disk over the range of the galactocentric distances 4 < R < 12 kpc. The velocity offsets DeltaV = V44 - V95 measured between the 44 and 95 GHz methanol lines provide, so far, one of the most stringent constraints on the spatial gradient k_mu = d(Delta mu/mu)/dR < 2x10^-9 kpc-1 and the upper limit on Delta mu/mu < 2x10^-8, where Delta mu/m…
The possibility of using astrophysical observations of rotational transitions in the methanol molecule to measure, or constrain temporal and spatial variations in the proton-to-electron mass ratio (mu) has recently been investigated by several groups. Here we outline some of the practical considerations of making such observations, including both the instrumental and astrophysical limitations which exist at present. This leads us to conclude that such observations are unlikely to be able to improve evidence either for, or against the presence of variations in the proton-to-electron mass ratio …
Methanol is an important tracer to probe physical and chemical conditions in the interstellar medium of galaxies. Methanol is also the most sensitive target molecule for probing potential space-time variations of the proton-electron mass ratio, mu, a dimensionless constant of nature. We present an extensive ALMA study of the strongest submillimeter absorption lines of methanol [...] in the z=0.89 molecular absorber toward PKS1830-211, the only high-redshift object in which methanol has been detected. Our goals are to constrain the excitation of the methanol lines and to investigate the cosmolo…
We have carried out observations of CCH ($N=1-0$), CH$_{3}$CN ($J=5-4$), and three $^{13}$C isotopologues of HC$_{3}$N ($J=10-9$) toward three massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), G12.89+0.49, G16.86--2.16, and G28.28--0.36, with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope. Combined with previous results on HC$_{5}$N, the column density ratios of $N$(CCH)/$N$(HC$_{5}$N), hereafter the CCH/HC$_{5}$N ratios, in the MYSOs are derived to be $\sim 15$. This value is lower than that in a low-mass warm carbon chain chemistry (WCCC) source by more than one order of magnitude. We compare the observed CCH/HC$_{…
A limit on a possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio $μ$ is derived from methanol (CH$_3$OH) absorption lines in the benchmark PKS1830$-$211 lensing galaxy at redshift $z = 0.89$ observed with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope, the Institute de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique 30-m telescope, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Ten different absorption lines of CH$_3$OH covering a wide range of sensitivity coefficients $K_μ$ are used to derive a purely statistical 1-$σ$ constraint of $Δμ/μ= (1.5 \pm 1.5) \times 10^{-7}$ for a lookback time of 7.5…

Observations of the frequencies of different rotational transitions of the methanol molecule have provided the most sensitive probe to date for changes in the proton-to-electron mass ratio, over space and time. Using methanol absorption detected in the gravitational lens system PKS B1830-211, changes in the proton-to-electron ratio over the last 7.5 billion years have been constrained to a fractional change less than 1.1e-07. Molecular absorption systems at cosmological distances present the best opportunity for constraining or measuring changes in the fundamental constants of physics over tim…
The study of deuteration in pre-stellar cores is important to understand the physical and chemical initial conditions in the process of star formation. In particular, observations toward pre-stellar cores of methanol and deuterated methanol, solely formed on the surface of dust grains, may provide useful insights on surface processes at low temperatures. Here we analyze maps of CO, methanol, formaldehyde and their deuterated isotopologues toward a well-known pre-stellar core. This study allows us to test current gas-dust chemical models. Single-dish observations of CH$_3$OH, CH$_2$DOH, H$_2$CO…
Methanol is a key species in astrochemistry since it is the most abundant organic molecule in the ISM and is thought to be the mother molecule of many complex organic species. Estimating the deuteration of methanol around young protostars is of crucial importance because it highly depends on its formation mechanisms and the physical conditions during its moment of formation. We analyse dozens of transitions from deuterated methanol isotopologues coming from various existing observational datasets from the IRAM-PdBI and ALMA sub-mm interferometers to estimate the methanol deuteration surroundin…
We report Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) absorption spectroscopy in four methanol (CH$_3$OH) lines in the $z = 0.88582$ gravitational lens towards PKS1830-211. Three of the four lines have very different sensitivity coefficients $K_μ$ to changes in the proton-electron mass ratio $μ$; a comparison between the line redshifts thus allows us to test for temporal evolution in $μ$. We obtain a stringent statistical constraint on changes in $μ$ by comparing the redshifted 12.179 GHz and 60.531 GHz lines, $[Δmu/μ] \leq 1.1 \times 10^{-7}$ ($2σ$) over $0 < z \leq 0.88582$, a factor of $\approx 2…
The deuteration of molecules forming in the ices such as methanol (CH$_3$OH) is sensitive to the physical conditions during their formation in dense cold clouds and can be probed through observations of deuterated methanol in hot cores. Observations with ALMA containing transitions of CH$_3$OH, CH$_2$DOH, CHD$_2$OH, $^{13}$CH$_3$OH, and CH$_3^{18}$OH are investigated. The column densities of CH$_2$DOH, CHD$_2$OH, and CH$_3$OH are determined for all sources, where the column density of CH$_3$OH is derived from optically thin $^{13}$C and $^{18}$O isotopologues. Consequently, the D/H ratio of me…
The abundance of deuterated molecules in a star-forming region is sensitive to the environment in which they are formed. Deuteration fractions therefore provide a powerful tool for studying the physical and chemical evolution of a star-forming system. While local low-mass star-forming regions show very high deuteration ratios, much lower fractions are observed towards Orion and the Galactic Centre. We derive methanol deuteration fractions at a number of locations towards the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I, located at a mean distance of 1.3 kpc, and discuss how these can shed light on …
Context: We investigated the molecular gas associated with 6.7 GHz methanol masers throughout the Galaxy using a J=1-0 transition of the CO isotopologues. Methods:Using the 13.7-meter telescope at the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO), we have obtained ^{12}CO and ^{13}CO (1-0) lines for 160 methanol masers sources from the first to the third Galactic quadrants. We made efforts to resolve the distance ambiguity by careful comparison with the radio continuum and HI 21 cm observations. Results: First, the maser sources show increased ^{13}CO line widths toward the Galactic center, suggesting tha…
Methanol is observed in a wide range of astrophysical sources throughout the universe, and comprehensive databases of the millimeter and THz spectra of CH3OH and its principal isotopologues represent important tools for the astronomical community. A previous combined analysis of microwave and millimeter wave spectra of 13CH3OH together with Fourier transform far-infrared spectra was limited to the first two torsional states, v_t = 0 and 1, for J values up to 20. The limits on frequency and quantum number coverage have recently been extended by new millimeter and THz measurements on several dif…
Observations and chemical modeling of the isotopologues of formaldehyde and the cations of formyl and protonated formaldehyde in the hot molecular core G331.512-0.103
$Aims$: We revisit with new augmented accuracy the theoretical dynamics of basic isotope exchange reactions involved in the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C, $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O, and $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N balance because these reactions have already been studied experimentally in great detail. $Methods$: Electronic structure methods were employed to explore potential energy surfaces, full-dimensional rovibrational calculations to compute rovibrational energy levels that are numerically exact, and chemical network models to estimate the abundance ratios under interstellar conditions. $Results$: New exothermicities,…

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for emission from the $4_{-1} \rightarrow 3_{0}E$ transition of methanol (36.2 GHz) towards the center of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. Two regions of emission were detected, offset from the nucleus along the same position angle as the inner spiral arms. The emission is largely unresolved on a scale of 5 arcsec, has a full-width half maximum (FWHM) line width of < 30 km s$^{-1}$, and an isotropic luminosity orders of magnitude larger than that observed in any Galactic star formation regions. These characteristics suggest…

Magnetic fields play an important role during star formation. Direct magnetic field strength observations have proven specifically challenging in the extremely dynamic protostellar phase. Because of their occurrence in the densest parts of star forming regions, masers, through polarization observations, are the main source of magnetic field strength and morphology measurements around protostars. Of all maser species, methanol is one of the strongest and most abundant tracers of gas around high-mass protostellar disks and in outflows. However, as experimental determination of the magnetic chara…
The mass sensitivity of the vibration-rotation-inversion transitions of H$_3{}^{16}$O$^+$, H$_3{}^{18}$O$^+$, and D$_3{}^{16}$O$^+$ is investigated variationally using the nuclear motion program TROVE~\citep{TROVE:2007}. The calculations utilize new high-level \textit{ab initio} potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. Along with the mass dependence, frequency data and Einstein A coefficients are computed for all transitions probed. Particular attention is paid to the $Δ|k|=3$ and $Δ|k-l|=3$ transitions comprising the accidentally coinciding $|J,K\!=\!0,v_2\!=\!0^+\rangle$ and $|J,K\!=\!3,…
Complex organic molecules (COMs) are often observed toward embedded Class 0 and I protostars. However, not all Class 0 and I protostars exhibit COMs emission. In this work, variations in methanol (CH$_3$OH) emission are studied to test if absence of CH$_3$OH emission can be linked to source properties. Combining both new and archival observations with ALMA and sources from the literature, a sample of 184 low-mass and high-mass protostars is investigated. The warm (T > 100 K) gaseous CH$_3$OH mass, $M_{\rm CH_3OH}$, is determined for each source using primarily optically thin isotopologues. On …
